Karin is standing on a cliff in the mountains. Below her, a valley cuts through the rock and thick clouds roll through the air. The wind blasts through her hair and she tastes rain.
A storm is coming. She runs over the edge of the cliff and straight down the steep slope of the cliff face, picking up speed. At last, she leaps off the rock and glides through the air, her cloak billowing around her as the wind rushes by her face. She's a hawk now, blackened wingtips splayed and she can see the patterning of her feathers. She is beautiful, red, and she glides down through the clouds like it's the most natural thing in the world. Beneath the clouds, there's a white bridge stretching across the ocean. She sees a figure on it and, as she glides closer, she realizes that it is Sasuke. Her call is a shrill sound that cuts the air. He stops and turns, looking up at her as a large wave crashes against the bridge. She banks, looping around and over the water, lower and lower. Sasuke smiles and holds out his arm. She can now hear the jangle of bells – takagari, she thinks and it is somehow right. Suddenly, the bridge vanishes and he is standing on the water. There's a large shadow beneath him, steadily growing darker, and the clouds roil ominously with chains of lighting. She's terrified and all she wants to do is get away. She flies higher, shrieking at him in fright. Sasuke smiles and the dark water beneath him explodes into the air, sending her hurtling sideways as it pulls him under. Lightning pierces her wing and she is falling, feathers stripping away until she is human again. If she hits the water, she will die, she knows this. She lands on something and, startled, she realizes she's landed in a sakura tree. She sits up and the tree is gone, replaced by a field of wildflowers. In the distance she sees a male figure silhouetted by the sun – his hair is blond, she thinks – and one of his hands is full of sakura blossoms. He is warm and radiant with life, as she knows Sasuke once was. He holds out a hand. The field is full of Forget-Me-Nots. The sun dims jarringly as a cold wind blows and the flowers bend. Karin shivers, her breath visible in the air, and turns. Behind her, the sky has turned black and the water pounds against the shore. A pale hand claws up and through the dirt, followed by another, and then those eyes, those horrible red eyes. "I thought I told you," Sasuke sneers, his Sharingan shifting, "To forget!" The world turns black and red and she screams. Karin's eyes shoot open and she is halfway out of bed as the pink-haired nurse grabs her. "There, there! You're safe now," the nurse says and Karin bursts into tears with relief. The nurse holds her while she cries, rocking her in her arms, and strokes her hair soothingly until her sobs finally peter into exhausted nothingness. Outside, rain hammers against the window and the rumble of thunder fills the silence. The vase of Forget-Me-Nots is still there. "Was it the bridge again?" the nurse asks, gently. Karin sniffles and ignores the twinge of pain in her chest as she admits, "There was a bridge." "Do you remember anything else?" the nurse pries. Karin shakes her head a little, clinging tightly to the pink-haired woman, and watches the rain pelt down. Lightning flashes outside and, for a moment, she sees a shape in a tree outside. There is a terrible crash of thunder and a second flash of lighting that briefly lights up everything. It was a bird, a hawk of some kind, huddled in its nest and trying to hide from the storm. "Karin?" the nurse asks, concerned. "I... I was a hawk," she murmurs, frowning. "I know," the nurse says. "I know." "There was someone on the bridge..." Karin adds. She remembers the red and white fan on his back and the salty spray of the ocean against her face and her head begins to throb painfully. "I don't think he's there anymore," the nurse says, quietly. For some reason, this hurts worse than her head or chest and Karin begins to cry again, clinging to the nurse as if she were the last thing left in the world. "There, there," the nurse says, soothingly, and holds her until she drifts back to sleep again.Ibiki steeples his hands and leans forward. "Explain this to me."
The report sits on his desk, ink still drying in places. "Each image in this is a symbol," Inoichi answers. "I believe she's revisiting a specific event or series of events over and over again. Namely, those that lead up to her capture." "How does this help us?" Ibiki asks, pointedly. "It's good, it's very good," Inoichi explains. "On some level, she's instinctively aware that something's out of place with those specific memories, but she can't go about it directly. So her subconscious is using symbols to try and let her know what the missing pieces are." Ibiki frowns. "Can you undo it?" "I've managed to get my foot in the door. I used flowers – Forget-Me-Nots," Inoichi says, leaning forward. He frowns and, hesitantly, adds, "But I have to be careful. If I press too hard, it might backfire and make it worse. We are, to use our friend's words, facing a very troublesome enemy."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
