Chapter Four
Naruko groaned to herself as she opened the door only to find the Hokage and two escorts with him "Naruko..." she slammed the door before he could finish, bolting it and activating the traps in the building "You know the rules Hokage-sama" she told him through the door "This is unnecessary Naruko-chan" the Hokage replied "Don't call me that. Besides, it's completely necessary as far as I'm concerned" Naruko retorted "all clients bring only themselves, anymore than that and all proceedings take place either between the door or not at all, and no material is passed between the parties" she told him "I am aware" he responded "Then why the fuck have you got two Anbu level ninja's with you?" she demanded of him "They came of their own violation" he told her "Bullshit" "It's the truth" "Bullshit, you're a politician first and a leader second, so cut the crap. What do you want?" she asked him bluntly, aggravated by his mere presence "Open the door" "I refuse. Ask your question or get the fuck out of my apartment block" she replied, her voice still level and calm "Very well, are you aware of a certain piece of information concerning a rather powerful merchant? Something that could lead to potentially devastating consequences for Konoha?" he asked her. She sighed "No, that information is no longer known to me" she replied "But you had it?" "That is between me and the client" "Where is it now?" "That depends on the client. Once it is theirs it is their choice as to what they do with it" she told him bluntly. She could almost feel the Hokage tensing "Give me the name of the client" "No" she replied bluntly "that's bad for business. If you want that information either pay for it, like everyone else, or take me to court under civilian laws" she told him "I am ordering you to release the information" "I am a civilian and under law I am protected from your authority" she replied calmly "the client is not an enemy of Konoha, at any rate, I had that checked before moving the information. If that is all then kindly remove yourself from my building" she said, leaning against the door as she spoke. "Are you sure?" he asked her and she sighed in exasperation "Yes, his background was checked. He was rather persuasive, what with his immense wealth" she told the man who now seemed calmer "Very well" he replied. She knew he'd guessed the cliental but it didn't matter to her, he couldn't do anything to the man without evidence of the transaction, which didn't exist, and she hadn't told him the name of her client. Everybody wins. "Goodbye" she said, moving away "May we have the hard copy?" the Hokage asked before she'd taken her second step "There is no second copy" "But you always..." "No, the client was specific. The information would have become redundant in several weeks at any rate" she explained to him "Evidence?" "All with the client" "Very well, my apologies for this" he said, she scoffed "Don't lie to me Hokage-sama. Please leave" she said, a few moments later their chakra signatures left the building. She sighed to herself and decided to get dressed before heading out to deal with the rest of the day. The sun was hot when she left her building at last. It was almost midday and the village was well and truly awake now, with people bustling around in and out of shops and restaurants in the town. Naruko just flipped her hood up and strode out into the crowd, moving through it like some kind of ghost. She arrived at that main park that sat towards the centre of the village. It was filled with all manner of people from families having a day out to ninja's just looking to relax for a change. The sun was high in the bright azure sky and it was quite warm now, despite the few clouds gathering above, like splatters of white paint upon a clean sapphire canvas. The pond in the centre of the park was where many people were. Its surface glittering beautifully in the light from the sun as people walked around it, some feeding the ducks while others simply lounged nearby, enjoying the peaceful serenity that permeated this place so completely. Naruto moved over to the pond and sat down on one of its many benches. Her hood never left her face as she relaxed and observed the people milling about, feeling the warmth of the suns light upon her body as she sat there. Away from the pond sat dense trees that surrounded the rest of Konoha, though it was less dense than much of said forest. Most of the people in there were lying on the ground under the shade that the trees provided for them, the scent of the trees wafting through the entire park. A few moments later and Naruko felt someone sit next to her. He was still as shaky as ever "The rest" Naruko said calmly as she removed a packet from her jacket and handed it to the man who looked at it before pocketing it himself "T-thank you" he said before quickly rushing off. Naruko sighed to herself. The stupid sod had been followed the previous night, possibly by some random ninja on patrol. That was how the Hokage had known it was her. While there was no evidence to suggest that it had indeed been her, the old man was still very sharp despite his old age, she was probably the only person in the town who would use random people to carry information after all. She sighed and stood up, deciding to move on since that business was dealt with and a large sum of money was sitting in one of her many back accounts. She found who she was looking for sitting a little ways beyond the pond; she was underneath the shade of one of the trees, reading something in her lap as she waited for Naruko to arrive. The girls' hair was in twin buns that were so distinctive that they were hard to miss. "Tenten-chan" Naruko said as she sat next to the girl, still careful to keep her face hidden from sight She had met Tenten quite a while ago. She had been building up her network to include some people from within the ninja core and Tenten had seemed like a good choice. She was an orphan and so needed the money Naruko could provide, she had a sense of honour and pride that meant she was unlikely to provide Naruko with any false information or try to cheat her, and finally was in a good position to get the kind of information Naruko needed. However it had been Tenten who had approached her first, she had requested some information and in return had provided Naruko with substantial records on who brought what and also rumours she had heard. Naruko had given her some money on top of the information and had made her part of the network, hiring her on permanently. "Oh, hello Broker-san" Tenten said, the name almost made Naruko smile. It had taken her years of hard work to earn that particular nickname, and it always brought her a sort of prideful feeling whenever someone said it to her "You wanted to meet me?" she asked the girl the same age as her. She had missed a year off before joining the academy; as such she was a year older than those in her class. "Yeah, I, uh, have something for you" Tenten said, handing Naruko a small package, no doubt filled with yet more information "Thank you Tenten-chan" Naruko said as she took the package, slipping it into her jacket before leaning back "what do you want this time?" she asked the girl "Money" she said simply and Naruko grinned, though Tenten would barely be able to see it thanks to the shadows caused by the hood and the angle at which Naruko kept her face "Thought so. It'll be waiting for you when you get back to your shop" Naruko told the girl who nodded. "But enough of business, how have you been Tenten-chan?" Naruko asked the girl who didn't look in the least bit shocked at the change in subject "Annoyed and bored" she responded as Naruko chuckled "Really? Your teammates are the very least boring people I know" "Yeah, because hearing them shout all the time about 'youth' is really what I need to hear all day" "So what's boring?" "We haven't been on a mission in a while and everything's quiet around the shop" "Hmm, I see. Well then, perhaps you should take up a hobby" Naruko suggested helpfully as she leant back, arms resting on the back of the bench. "Easy for you to say" Tenten responded much to her amusement "Yep, I'm never bored anymore. Anyway, how are things with the shop? All cleared up now?" Naruko asked as she lent forwards slightly "Yeah, thank you" "Don't mention it" Naruko said as she relaxed again. A little while back Tenten had been in rather bad shape. She had had no money from a sudden lull in the market thanks to a drop in missions, coupled with an inability to provide Naruko with any more information and threats to close the shop and kick her out of her apartment due to her inability to keep up with the monthly rent. She had nearly gone out of her mind with worry until suddenly the threats had disappeared and a little over ten thousand yen had appeared in her bank account courtesy of someone she had never heard of. She had realised that it had been Naruko and had been a trustworthy source of information from then onwards. "How have you been Broker-san?" Tenten asked her, she smiled "You know I can't tell you that. But I have been well, if a little busy" Naruko responded to the inquisitive girl. "Fine, don't tell me then" Tenten said while nearly pouting. She had been trying to get some evidence as to who Naruko was but Naruko hadn't made it this far in the business by being careless with information, no matter how insignificant it seemed. Naruko just smiled as they settled into a kind of peaceful silence for a few moments before Tenten spoke up again "I need to get back to the shop, the managers going out and I need to take over" she said as she stood up, stretching as she did so as Naruko, to, stood up "I'll walk you back then shall I?" she said as she stood beside the bun haired girl "You don't need to" "No, but I need some weapons, I enjoy your company, and I haven't got anything better to do for now" Naruko replied. Tenten just huffed again and walked on ahead, Naruko easily keeping pace with her as they made their way down one of the busier streets. They arrived at Tenten's shop a few minutes later. It was a fairly small affair and many people would over look it unless they were looking carefully. But such was the nature of any shop that functioned for ninja's only. Even looking through the front windows it was easy to see the sheer number and variety of weapons that the shop stocked despite the fact that many ninja's stuck with the basics until they needed to change focus for some reason, usually because of entering Anbu, when it became mandatory to know how to wield a blade with at least some proficiency. "I'm back!" Tenten called out as she walked in. The shop was certainly more impressive on the inside. The dark mahogany on the walls only served to make the many weapons stand out more against the surfaces. Multiple swords, kunai, throwing knives, combat knives, even curved blades were stocked here. Most hung from the wall though the kunai and such were left on display cabinets, all ready for combat, fully sharpened and waiting for their first taste of blood. All tools designed for one thing, to kill other human beings. At the back of the small shop was the counter, a lighter shade than the rest of the shop, and behind that was a door that led to the storage area and forge where the shops manager worked. He strode out, a tall and muscular man by all accounts; his hair was greying though he appeared to of kept most of it. His face was beginning to wrinkle though Naruko suspected the man was older than he first appeared "Ah Tenten-chan, oh, and who's this?" he said as he noticed Naruko "A friend" Tenten said, Naruko was surprised that the man left it at that. Though she suspected that Tenten may have told him what had happened, especially considering the fact that she had saved his shop in order to help Tenten. "Right, well I'm going out for a while, so don't forget to close up the shop and lock the stock away" he said while Tenten looked as though he'd said it a thousand times before, which he probably had. He left in quite a hurry, leaving Naruko and Tenten on their own. Tenten just sighed before moving over to take her position by the counter, already looking complete bored as she leant on the counter. Naruko just smiled "Not enjoying your job?" she asked "Yeah, because sitting here for hours of end bored out of my skull is exactly my idea of fun" Tenten responded sarcastically "At least you're getting paid for it" Naruko responded while checking over several weapons. Her eyes lingered on the curved blades. The handles were designed to sit comfortable while the blade curved up and over the knuckles, functioning almost like knuckle dusters for the first two knuckles, before the blade continued, now a simple razor sharp edge like a normal dagger, though it still curved backwards slightly. "Do you like them?" Tenten asked her after a few moments "They are interesting. Very few ninja's ever use these kinds of weapons due to the difficulty of using them" Naruko told Tenten who nodded "Yes, their surprisingly hard to get to grips with but are extremely powerful weapons once the person knows how to handle them well" she said to Naruko who took them off of their stand and proceeded to examine them, moving with them in a kind of intricate dance as she did so. She hummed thoughtfully to herself "How much?" she asked Tenten who shook her head "Take them" "I can't do that" "It's the least I and the manager can give you for helping us like you did" Tenten insisted, pushing the blades into Naruko's hands. Naruko sighed "Very well then. Thank you for the gift" she said as she settled them in her belt comfortably before paying for the rest of her equipment. "Are you a ninja, Broker-san?" Tenten asked Naruko as she put the last of her equipment in a bag and handed it over "Maybe, maybe not" Naruko responded with a small smile to the girl who pouted again "When are you going to tell me?" she asked "When I think I can fully trust you...or you find out by yourself" Naruko replied as Tenten sighed "Fine then" she huffed, Naruko just chuckled at her expense "See you later Tenten-chan" she said before disappearing out of the door, leaving a bored Tenten to sit there and waste the day away. Meanwhile, as all this was going on, Tsume had just arrived back at her clan compound. The two guards bowed to her as she passed "Welcome back, Inuzuka-sama" they said in unison as she entered the compound. She smiled at them as she walked towards the main house of the land the Inuzuka clan owned. The central house was, unlike other clans such as the Uchiha and Hyuga, fairly small all things considered. It could provide quite comfortable living for a fairly large family but any family gatherings took place inside the actual compound building itself that could house and seat just over forty people. It was home to Tsume and her only son and daughter, and as such could feel rather empty at times though she liked the peace that came with it. She opened the main door and stepped into the household to be greeted by the smell of the forest, grass and mud, along with a faint smell of dog coming in through the kennels where the dogs would be at the moment. She sighed as she slipped her shoes off and walked into the house. She could smell Kiba around somewhere, obviously having just come in from the academy, but Hana was still at the vets. She moved up to her bedroom and sat on the rather large bed, relaxing as she found her mind beginning to fill with thoughts of Naruko again "Fucking hell" she muttered to herself as she fell backwards onto the soft fur of the top cover. She was definitely keeping hold of Naruko if she could help it. The girl was strong, wilful and not in the least bit afraid of the reparations that their relationship could incur if it came to light within the council and general public. Not to mention she could go far longer than any man Tsume had ever met, and seemed to remember each and every sensitive spot she found after only finding it once. But aside from being a great lover she was also perfect mate material, her will meant it wouldn't be hard to her to secure dominance over the less...accepting, or more rebellious, members of the pack. And her great strength and intelligence could only benefit the clan both as a clan and as a pack. Tsume hated thinking in that way, but her instincts, as with all Inuzuka's, made her seek out a strong mate for that very same reason. It helped that the longer she spent around the young girl the more attached she was becoming to her, her kind nature was something that was obviously well hidden and cloaked behind bitterness born of living in a cold and uncaring world, but once exposed it was something that only drew Tsume more to the girl and mad her ever more attached to her. A sudden knock at the door brought her from her thoughts as she quickly leapt up and made her way swiftly down to the front door "Oh, hello Akane-chan" Tsume greeted the woman in front of her. The girl was one of her cousins, though from what part of the family she wasn't quite sure, with dark brown hair that was cropped to hang just by her ears and darker eyes. "Tsume-chan" Akane responded, smiling in that feral way their clan was so famous for as she hugged the older woman. Tsume hugged her back and smiled when she felt the woman sniff her slighty "What are you doing?" she asked the woman as she pulled away and looked at her carefully "You were gone all of last night. Some of us are a bit suspicious" she responded "Hmm, suspicious of what Akane-chan?" Tsume asked as she turned away and walked back into her house, walking down the hall to the kitchen as Akane followed her "Just about the fact that you've found yourself a new mate" she said as she leant on a counter top, watching Tsume with her dark eyes. Tsume just smiled at the women "I have no idea what you're going on about" "Oh come on, not only were you gone all night last night, but you also look quite cheerful today, and don't think I missed that look in your eye when you opened the door either" "What look? Anyway, even if I did find a mate, I certainly wouldn't tell you until I was good and ready" "Hmm, fine, but we'll find out one way or another" Akane declared baselessly before striding out of the house, leaving Tsume alone with her thoughts again. "Kaa-san" Kiba suddenly greeted her from the doorway; she looked over at the young boy. He was definitely her son, with messy brown hair, sharp dark brown eyes with vertical slit-like pupils, pronounced canine teeth and sharp nails. The distinctive red fang markings of their clan sat upon his cheeks "Good afternoon sochi" she responded as he moved into the kitchen, appearing to be hunting for some food as his canine partner, Akamuru, sat atop his head like some kind of white fur hat, barking occasionally "How was the academy?" she asked as she watched him with her sharp eyes, he shrugged "Boring" he responded, she hummed "I hope you didn't skip class again" she said after a few moments, watching him tense up slightly out of the corner of her eye "O-of course I didn't" he responded with a shaky smile, she just growled, making him back up slightly "How many times have I told you not to skip?" she asked him as he swallowed nervously "Um, quite a few?" he answered as he edged towards the door "Hmm, and what about training? Done any today?" she asked "Yeah, I-I'll go do that right now" he said before flying out of the room like a shot. Tsume shook her head and pinched the bridge of her nose in exasperation at her sons' antics. She often wondered at how the boy ever thought he would manage to become clan head after his sister with the way he was going. If she had to pick a clan head out of the possibilities she had to hand now Hana would be number one all the way, even if she didn't want it, and she'd rather choose one of her cousins or someone to take over than let Kiba, and his impulsive behaviour, lead the clan in possible ruin. Though, if she was honest, Naruko would be the one who she'd want to lead the clan if it was possible. She was highly intelligent, patient and calm, capable of dealing with many different types of people with seemingly no issues. She seemed to always think things through and only take risks if she knew that she'd come out better for it either way, couple that with the kindness underneath her shell and she would be the perfect leader. It helped that she seemed to be a natural leader anyway, unlike Hana who didn't really want the job, and Kiba who only thought he was a leader. The veterinary wasn't that hard to find for Naruko. She passed by this place often enough during her day to day dealings in the town. A one floored building situated nearby to the Inuzuka clan compound and always having at least half a dozen people in it, most with some kind of pet, though some simply went for advice on getting a pet or buying food and the like considering how well stocked they always seemed to be. Naruto had practically no interest in animals, though that wasn't to say she knew nothing about them. She knew quite enough about the basics of animals to make her sure she didn't really won't one, mostly due to the cost and time it would take to look after. She walked through the doorway into the waiting room, a plain white area with a dull carpet and plenty of chairs for people to sit in while they impatiently waited for their turn. The receptionist looked rather harried and somewhat bored with, Naruko guessed, the constant flood of 'patients' and phone calls they must have been getting. She wasn't wearing her jacket or gloves anymore, having deposited them back at her house before coming here. No point in tempting fate after all. The receptionist noticed her but Naruko waved her attention away, she wasn't here for an appointment after all, she was more interested in the person in the clinic off to one side behind a closed door which suddenly opened, revealing Hana dressed in a white lab coat and latex gloves as she ushered someone out of the room as she quickly scanned the room. Naruko smirked when Hana failed to notice her, so quick was her once over, "Next please!" she called the next patient and then ducked back into the room while Naruko decided to take up residence against the wall and wait as she pulled out a file and began to work on it. Luckily the whole thing was in code so none of civilians would guess what she was working on. Naruko always kept two copies of everything she had unless it was subject to rapid change or wouldn't matter soon anyway, as such she always kept both the original file and a coded copy. The original would be given to whoever asked for the information while the coded ones would be used to produce more copies if need be and remain stored in her back room otherwise. Twenty minutes later and Hana opened the door again "Next" she said, not even glancing as Naruko smiled to herself. She had nothing but time after all, and patience was a lesson hard learned. But in her type of business it was a necessity. Another sliver of the day passed by and Hana opened the door again, however this time her eyes landed directly on Naruko who glanced up, locking eyes with the woman and holding her gaze for a few moments before looking away again as Hana seemed to take a moment to find her bearings again "Next please!" she said, glancing at Naruko again before she went back inside her room. Not five minutes later she walked out of the room, grabbed Naruko, and dragged her off to the staff break room "Why are you here?" Hana asked her bluntly once the door was closed and locked. Naruko looked at the tense woman "To see you" she responded bluntly. Hana blinked in surprise and words seemed to fail her for the moment. "T-thank you" she finally stumbled out as she shifted uncertainlyWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
