He hadn’t meant to kiss her; he’d just wanted to stop her shaking – to stop her from fainting and he’d acted on impulse. Of course he’d had other thoughts first but they were even more inappropriate. He put it down to the fact that her gorgeous form was practically naked in front of him. He was surprised to find it had worked though – or at least she had yet to go limp in his arms.
He’d never kissed a girl before, never felt inclined. His previous interactions with the fairer sex being shaky at best and didn’t give him that great a view of females in general. There were some he respected; Temari for instance and a few other serious, dedicated shinobi, but the rest he’d met fawned and fluttered irritatingly. Hinata didn’t fawn and she didn’t flutter. She moved with the grace of her station, nothing escaping those pale unjudging eyes. She always looked at him with a gaze that told him she saw more in him than just his title. It was a gaze that was present now, driving him further and further from rationality. Gaara wanted to do more than just this feeble kissing. He wanted to be closer to her but he didn’t know how. He remembered how Kankuro had been talking about his various conquests. He’d tried his best to tune his brother out at the time but now he wished he had listened more closely. Didn’t Kankuro say something about using his tongue? *** Their lips met in a tender kiss that all but stopped Hinata’s heart. Gaara was kissing her, caressing her hair with his hand. Gaara's lips were incredibly soft and warm and they were moulding so gently against hers, as if he were afraid to break her. Hinata was enjoying the chaste kiss, having no real experience in this area herself. Of course she’d always imagined kissing Naruto but even in her fantasies she’d still end up fainting. Then there were the dreams she’d been having the last few weeks that were a whole lot less innocent and they all involved the red head right in front of her. None of them had him kissing her though – at least not on the lips… When she felt his tongue, she pulled back in shock, the wetness surprising more than it being unpleasant. Misreading her sudden withdrawal as rejection, Gaara was unable to help remembering the name she’d uttered that night a month ago. That’s right – she was in love with someone else. Feeling hurt, he backed away, distancing himself from her. Hinata fell forward into the empty space that used to be Gaara. At first she was puzzled, her mind still muddled from the kiss. She could still feel the touch of his lips to hers as vividly as if they were still there and had to blink several times to clear her fantasies. She looked up to find him a few meters away leaning against a tree with his back to her. She felt so disappointed it surprised her. She hadn’t wanted him to stop. She was about to call him back to let him know that she wasn’t pulling away when a thought came to her unbidden. What if he’d just wanted to stop kissing her and didn’t know how to tell her? He'd probably only done it to calm her down, so she wouldn't faint. But he'd been so close, she'd let herself go and forgot her place and he was probably being polite not pulling away first. He was the Kazekage for goodness sake! There was no way she was suited to him. Her feelings must be such a hindrance to him. What he must think of her; she was supposed to be there as an Emissary from Konoha, representing her village and she'd just kissed him! She'd just shamed her whole village. She had to apologise. She had to say something! "Um," she said softly, trying to find a tactful way to say sorry but he said it first. "Sorry," he said softly. "I shouldn't have done that. Uzumaki Naruto is my friend." That threw Hinata even further. Why was he apologising? And why did he bring up Naruto kun out of the blue? "Naruto kun?" she asked confused. Gaara felt a slight pang at such a familiar mention of his friend’s name from her lips. She was okay with calling Naruto by his name but couldn't manage the same for him? The feeling of wanting to punch the blonde suddenly welled up inside him again. "You like him," he mumbled, feeling miserable at having to say that. Hinata couldn't believe what she was hearing. How did Gaara even find out about that? She wanted to hurriedly tell him that she no longer liked Naruto, at least not in that way, but stopped. Who would believe that? Just a short few weeks ago if someone had mentioned Naruto's name she would have blushed profusely to the point of fainting. "So you knew about that?" she said instead. He didn't reply but shifted uncomfortably from one foot to another. Hugging her knees, looking as the calm water reflected her image back at her, she took a deep breath and said, "I always watched him, Naruto kun. He was everything I wanted to be. He was incredible. People called him a monster, people ostracised him and he just kept smiling, kept getting stronger. I was born into the Hyuuga name but I was weaker than my younger sister, who surpassed me easily even though I was five years older. I would lose my confidence easily and I disliked conflict. I cried a lot back then; even though I wanted to change that weak me I lost faith. Naruto kun showed me that if I could believe in myself I could maybe change, even if just a little. He made me feel as if I could do anything if I just believed.” She didn’t turn but felt Gaara come back over to her and sit down, listening to her story. She shifted, dipping one leg into the water, letting the coolness of the liquid cool the heat that was rising in her again from his proximity. “I wanted to be like him and believe too and when he looked at me I wanted to be with him, because he showed me a world so much brighter than mine. Since I have been here I realised that wasn’t love.” Because I have found love. She didn’t say it but she thought it. It was then that she glanced at Gaara. He was watching the water ripple with a thoughtful expression. He’d been thinking that she was the same as him. That Uzumaki Naruto sure had a powerful vision. “I wouldn’t have been able to become a Chuunin if it wasn’t for him. But even now, I’m still weak…” He was surprised at her words. Of course she was wrong. He’d been watching her practice for weeks. She was strong. How did she not see that? When he didn't say anything, she continued to watch him, amazed she could do so without fainting. Instead she could only stare at his handsome profile in awe. With Gaara it was different, rather than feeling faint, her heart ached and she wanted to be closer to him, he was the man she’d been waiting for without realising it. Against all odds, she wanted him, knowing it wasn't at all feasible; he was even less obtainable than Naruto kun and she could never betray her position to let herself tell him she loved him. “The Jounin exam’s approaching," he said suddenly. If she could just give it a go maybe that would convince her of her ability. "You should do it. The exam will be held in Sunagakure this year.” She stared at him wide eyed. She’d only become a Chuunin last year. It was much too soon for her to think about the Jounin exam. Maybe in another few years when her skills improved... “You can do it.” “Maybe,” she said uncertainly, but she knew she wasn't ready for it and wouldn't do it. “Believe in yourself, Hinata. In turn I will also believe in you,” he said. He sounded so convincing that she wanted to believe him. She didn't understand where he got that confidence from. Since she hadn't realised he'd been watching her practice, in her mind his encouragement was baseless. They sat together like that, letting the silence stretch, both lost in their own thoughts – she with thoughts of the Jounin exam and Gaara with the knowledge that she didn't love Naruto anymore. Even though she'd said that, she did pull away from him when they kissed. That probably meant she didn't like him, but then why did she go out of her way to explain about Naruto? Did that mean he had a chance? Hinata stood before he got the chance to ask her. She'd started to feel uncomfortable, with them both sitting there half naked. This was getting complicated. She’d just renewed her resolve to see Gaara only as the Kazekage and fulfil her mission as she should but her urges were getting the best of her and she’d had to move to stop herself from jumping him. "We should probably get back to Sunagakure," she said awkwardly, trying to distract her mind from his exposed skin. He blinked then stood with a sigh. She was right. They'd both left without warning and he knew there was plenty of work waiting for him back at his office. Without a word he retrieved and changed back into his regular clothes. When he emerged he was shocked to find Hinata standing there still in her bikini. He was no more shocked than Hinata herself who’d already looked several times for her clothes and came up empty. [Somewhere in Suna, Temari wondered if she'd overdone it by stealing Hinata's clothes. Of course she didn't dare steal Gaara's] It only took a moment for Gaara to realise what happened and, unbuckling his outer vest, he took off his long sleeved jacket, revealing a long sleeved black turtleneck that was rarely seen, and held it out to Hinata, not able to keep the blush from his face even though he was looking away from her. She pulled it on as he buckled up his vest again. Expectedly, the jacket was way too big for her. The light breathable material it was made of didn’t restrict her movement and surprisingly kept the heat off her even though it covered a fair amount of her upper torso. She resisted the urge to hold the sleeves to her nose and breathe in; as it was, she could already smell him on it. He turned away from her, not able to keep looking at her in his clothes. "Let's go." Even though he’d said those words neither of them moved, suddenly aware of another unknown presence. Gaara pulled the girl back into the shrubbery, sand surrounding them as camouflage. Hinata didn’t hesitate either, her shinobi instincts taking over. She activated Byakugan and concentrated in the direction of the foreign chakra signature. With her ability activated, Hinata could see, not only the owners of the foreign signatures eight kilometres South East of their location, but also Sunagakure looming behind them ten kilometres away. "Three of them," she whispered to Gaara, reporting like she used to do with Kurenai sensei. Their headbands weren’t hidden and she clearly identified the four vertical lines with a horizontal scratch through the symbol. "Amegakure, missing nins but I don't recognise them from any bingo books I’ve seen." "New deserters?" Gaara asked taking his cues from her, impressed by the Byakugan's range. "Maybe." Either way, missing nins so close to Suna didn't bode well. "They're doing something, so I guess they aren't passing through." One of them bit their thumb and starting creating seals. "A summoning?" but it wasn't a summoning. Instead the ground rumbled and out of the sand the mouth of an entrance rose, leading underground toward Sunagakure. . The three slipped into the dark, disappearing underground. She watched as their chakra signatures faded. "They're gone." The entrance had started to sink as soon as the nins entered but now Gaara sent sand up from the ground around the entrance forming sandstone pillars to prop the entrance open. It was Hinata’s turn to be impressed now. She knew he’d done that all on feel; no normal human being was able to see that far without aid. He stood, brushing the sand off himself and took off toward the underground entrance. She fell in beside him, easily keeping his pace. . "You plan to follow them?" She did not like the idea one bit. Sure they'd identified three assailants, but that didn't rule out the possibility of more hiding underground. They didn't even know what was down there. "If there is a threat to Sunagakure, as Kazekage I will crush it," he said with calm resolve. Hinata weighed their options. Gaara was right, if they were at threat to Suna than taking them out earlier rather than waiting for them to make their move would be better. She would’ve liked to have gotten backup from Suna before heading into unknown danger, after all the entrance was only two kilometres out from Sunagakure, it would take no time at all to gather some skilled people, but even as she thought it she could see cracks were forming around the girth of the pillars; the pressure from the bespelled entrance starting to strain their support. Hinata pursed her lips as their course of action became clear, she sped up and he instinctively matched her pace. If they didn't hurry they wouldn't make it. "The pillars are collapsing." Their blurs streaked across the sand, so fast and lightly that the fine sand particles were barely disturbed. Launching themselves down into the darkness they heard the pillars finally crumble behind them. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
