"Haku? Can we talk? Would that be ok?" Shikamaru held the phone tightly. "You don't have to tell me anything you aren't comfortable with... it's just...." He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. "I don't have anyone else to talk to... about 'this'." He was certain Haku knew some, if not all of what was going on. Haku and Neji's relationship had shifted in the last several days. There was a sense of hesitation whenever Neji turned to Haku. The raven was very tense whenever the three of them were together. Maybe if he could talk it through with Haku, maybe Shika could make some sense of it all.
They met at the condo Neji was renting right on the water. Between his manga and his own investments, Neji was well off. The two of them walked side by side, Haku kept glancing out towards the water. There were lines of worry creasing his brow. "He chose this for me." Haku gestured to the house and then back to the water. "He knows how much I love the water."
They continued walking in silence for a bit. "So, you swim?"
"Not anymore."
Shika waited for Haku to explain, when the pretty raven remained silent he felt frustrated by expanse of things he just didn't understand. 'Some genius I am.'
He dove right in. "Why does Neji want me?"
Haku countered with his own. "How do you feel about him?"
"Neji?" Shika blocked, he wasn't ready to answer that question yet. He hadn't been able to bring himself to ask that question himself yet.
Again Haku countered beautifully. He had a gift for verbal warfare. "Or Naruto, if you'd rather begin there..."
"I don't know what to think..." Shika began.
Haku stopped short and shot him a sideways glance that pinned him in place. "I asked how you felt. Don't think, just answer." Shika started to speak and was smacked lightly on the arm. "Not yet!"
Haku started to walk again. The younger man had no choice but to follow obediently. His head was down, his posture screamed 'troubled'.
"Answer quickly and without thinking." The raven commanded. "When you see Neji, what do you feel?"
"I feel happy.... um, because he's safe and... and he's here...." Shika's head came up. It hit him like a blow. "I'm happy because he's here for me..." He realized that Haku was still walking and stumbled to keep up.
"I..." He stumbled over the myriad of things he wanted to say or felt that he should.
"Shut up. Only answer when asked. You... are impatient." Haku turned toward his newly found, but already dear friend. "You get in your own way."
Shika said something very Naruto like in that moment. "Yes, oh great Obi-wan."
Haku looked like he'd sucked on a lemon, his eyes rolling back into his head. "Brat."
The started walking again. Shika was prepared for a question about Naruto next. "Have you ever been in love?"
That question threw him. "I don't know."
"Not good enough. Answer."
"Yes."
Haku actually giggled. Shika was not going to give anymore information than that.
"Has Naruto ever been in love?"
"Naruto... he likes people. He doesn't fall in love with them."
"So, you've never heard him tell anyone he loved them?"
Shika didn't like this line of questioning... He knew where Haku was going with this. "He tells me. I think that's it."
Haku didn't say anything for a bit. "Neji has never known love, not even from his family. I am the only one who has ever shown him affection."
Shika interrupted with his own question. "Do you love Neji?"
"Yes."
"Are you in l..."
Haku interrupted him. "This is about you. What do you think Naruto is doing right now?"
Shika's eyes welled up suddenly. He couldn't believe it. He was crying. He pictured Naruto sitting alone. He saw the heartbreak in those deep blue eyes and just couldn't stop the storm from breaking. "Fuck."
Haku left him alone. The smaller man walked to the edge of the water and stared across the waves.
Shikamaru collected himself after a few moments. He couldn't stop himself. He felt so sad and lonely. He wrapped his arms around his friend and held him tight. "I'm a fuck up."
"Love is hard." Haku whispered softly. "Love sparkles like a diamond, but it has sharp edges. It cuts and tears at you. The tighter you squeeze it in your palm, the deeper it cuts..." Tears hit Shika's arm and he realized his friend was crying.
"What can I do?" He asked, wanting to console the man who had been so kind to him.
"Don't force it, but don't run away."
"I meant for you."
Haku actually choked up then. "I hate crying. I hate it. It changes nothing, but sometimes..." The small frame shook with effort, holding in powerful emotions. "I was in love. I loved him so much." He didn't speak for awhile. He stood very still as he tried not to cry. Shikamaru stayed where he was, holding the trembling body, his arms wet with tears.
Haku no longer had his love, for whatever reason. 'And here I am, with two men telling me they want me.' Shika had an odd random thought. He didn't want to leave Haku, not in that moment or ever. He wanted to make sure that this man never felt sad or alone again. 'What the fuck do I do with that?!?' He'd spent a lifetime never really feeling anything deep or emotional and now, lucky him, Shikamaru was filled with strong emotions and he didn't see any way those feelings could be anything but contradictory.
"Haku?"
"Hmmm?"
"Wanna tell me about it?"
"Why? So you can postpone dealing with your own mess?"
The man's insight was brutal. "Um... no, I just... I'd like to know..." Shika's voice trailed off. 'I'd like to know what kind of person you could love so much...' he thought to himself.
"His name was Zabuza." Haku began as the ocean breeze wafted over them, bringing with it a wave of painful memories. The little raven's body shook as he tried to restrain a sob. Shika hugged him tighter, just as Naruto had always done for him.
-------------------------------------------------
Neji sat across from the irritating woman and praised his self restraint. Anko Mitarashi did not know how to take no for an answer and 'no' was the only word left in his rather extensive vocabulary. "Thank you for your concern, but I would hate to take any more of your valuable time." He was already getting out of his chair to make his way toward the door and whatever sweet salvation waited on the other side and away from the tenacious harpy.
He grimaced slightly as he stood. He had pushed himself a bit too hard working out early in the morning. He hadn't slept well. Thinking a good workout was what he'd needed, Neji Hyuuga had made a serious mistake and pushed himself passed his own physical endurance. He hadn't made such a mistake in a very long time.
Looking at Neji's beautifully drawn men paled in comparison only to the gorgeous man himself, so of course Anko hadn't missed the pained expression however fleeting. "Are you injured Hyuuga-san?"
Neji restrained a sigh of exasperation, but did not lie. "I strained my lower back earlier."
"Oh, how awful." The woman would do anything to keep hold him prisoner. "We can't have you under the weather sensei."
"It will pass."
Anko shook her head. "Oh, I know a wonderful massage therapist... I have a card here somewhere." Neji began to shake his head as the woman headed back to her desk to dig the little slip of paper. "Found it!" She handed him the card as "Oh, you might already know him, he's a friend of that loafing Nara."
Neji looked down at the business card. 'Naruto Uzamaki' 'Licensed Massage Therapist' He took the card without even thinking about it. It took all he had to keep his facial expression neutral and his voice fairly steady. "Thank you for your concern."
Anko grinned arrogantly as she headed back to her office after seeing her new prize to his car. 'He was so touched by my concern. Anko, you rock.' She congratulated herself as she started making a list of other Neji Hyuuga graphic novels she wanted to publish in English. The woman really didn't have a clue, all the better under the circumstances.
------------------------------------------
Shikamaru felt completely drained as he drove home. There really was no way of knowing what other people had been through. No one would know what had happened to Neji just by being around him. Shika would never have known the heartache Haku had been through if the veil hadn't been pulled back as it had been today.
Naruto's smiling face appeared before his eyes just before his head hit the pillow. If Neji's cool collected orbs and Haku's sweet dark eyes could hide so much, what did Naruto's beautiful blue gems conceal. He had always thought he'd known all there was to know about his happy go lucky friend, but now he was not so sure.
-------------------------------------------
Most of Naruto's clients were repeaters. Ever so often the referral agency would call him with a new client, but it didn't happen often. He was always a little surprised when it happened. He carried his table up to the large door and rang the bell. The intercom answered. "Please come around to the back deck, second level," A distorted voice instructed through the speaker. Naruto rolled his eyes. Everyone wanted a massage near the ocean. To Naruto, unless you were on the beach or in the surf you might as well be in Kansas. He sighed and made his way around the large house.
There was no one there. Naruto looked around just to be sure he was where he needed to be. The handsome blond shook his shaggy head and grinned. Rich people were weird, it was just a fact. He started setting up his things. He got the table up and covered. He had several special playlists in his MP3 player, he set it on the railing with the wireless speakers on either side of the table. He left the lotion and oil in the bag. He'd decide what this client needed after meeting him or her. That was if his client would ever make an appearance.
Neji looked out through the upstairs window and hesitated. Hyuuga's do not hesitate. At least that is what he told himself as he swore to himself that he was not clinging to the window frame. He was nervous and warm and a little sad and could not for the life of him figure out why.
Naruto was getting bored. He leaned against the rail looking longingly at the surf. The water was so blue. 'I'd rather be surfin' he thought with a sigh.
There was a soft hiss behind him as the door slid open. He turned; and almost crapped himself. Neji didn't waver, he strode or rather glided toward the table. He turned and slipped his robe off his shoulders before asking. "Would you like me to lie on my stomach or my back?"
Naruto just stared in shock. 'Wha? Wha?' He wasn't thinking very clearly just yet.
Neji looked over one smooth pale shoulder. "Naruto-san... please... my back has been bothering me for a few days. I was told you could ease this for me." His voice was smooth as silk and as soft as vapor as it wafted on the breeze to caress the beach bum's sun-kissed cheek like a gentle kiss.
Naruto shivered in the warm air. He rubbed the back of his neck self-consciously. "Um, sure... uh lay on your stomach and we'll um, get you all fixed up."
Neji turned back toward the house and let the robe hit the deck. He didn't look at Naruto as he slid onto the table. He didn't blush when Naruto draped the soft cool sheet across his bare buttocks. Oh no, the heat he felt across his face could not possibly have been a blush, Hyuuga's do not blush.
Naruto was nervous and unsteady as he draped the soft cloth across Neji's pale perfect behind. 'What the hell... Why did he call me? I would'a thought he'd never want to be anywhere near me...' He gulped painfully as an excruciating thought passed across his mind. 'Did he ask me here to gloat? Has he... has Shika....' He wanted to vomit.
Naruto was just standing there with his back to Neji. The man was shaking noticeably. Neji sat up. "This was a mistake. I am sorry. I did not intend to hurt you further." Naruto turned to look at him. There were unshed tears in his eyes. The sapphires shimmered as Neji stood and closed the distance between them. "I, I simply wanted to apologize. I did not intend to..." His voice trailed off and he had to look away. 'Just what did I want? Did I want to seperate them? Yes, to a degree I did.' For a moment, Neji's own arrogance and hypocracy astounded him. He could not seem to raise his head. Never in his life had he been unable to raise his head, even when his family had managed to make him feel lower than dirt, he could always raise his head.
Naruto heard the words, but didn't understand. It was the tone of Neji's voice that spoke to him. It was obvious Neji was trying to comfort him in the beginning, but then the man's tone changed. He sounded sad and lost. Neji seemed to fall in upon himself more and more as he stood there. Naruto bit his lip and wrapped his arms around his 'rival'. He couldn't think of anything else to say. "So, your back doesn't really hurt?"
Neji stiffened when the warmth of the other man enveloped him. He bit back a sob he hadn't even known he was holding. "N... no, it does hurt. I just..." He took a deep breath. "I'm very sorry Naruto. I didn't think about anything. I just... I just wanted him so much." Instead of turning on him as he would expect anyone in Naruto's position to do, the blond hugged him tighter.
"I know Neji." Naruto whispered, his voice weighted with tumultuous emotion.
'He is... he is comforting me...' Neji could not have felt like more of an ass. His precious control slipped, just a little. His head fell upon the blond's strong shoulder. His hands gripped the blond's shirt and the man closer.
Somehow the beautiful man seemed so small as Naruto held him in his arms. Neji was tall and gorgeous and frail and delicate and Naruto could understand Shikamaru's desire to protect him. He couldn't even manage to be angry about it. Neji seemed as if he might crumble into dust if Naruto wasn't very careful. He began to stroke the other man's back very gently, wanting nothing more than to console the lovely man who had turned his life inside out.
The gentle caress was too much. Neji did not know how to react. He shoved the blond away in a moment of panicked uncertainty. He held the startled blond at arms-length. Their eyes met. Naruto's eyes weren't the only ones shimmering with unshed tears. Naruto's large palm cupped Neji's cheek. As usual, he reacted without thinking. He kissed the frightened man gently on the other cheek. "Who hurt you so badly that you can't even hug?" He wanted to kick himself after speaking. 'That was a stupid question... the guy was raped by some sadistic asshole, I am a dumbass....'
Neji spoke without thinking as well. "I am not used to 'hugs'. Haku is the only one who has ever hugged me."
That hit Naruto straight in the gut. He kissed the man's pale lips. "That's not okay Neji." He pulled them resisting man back into his embrace. "I think you are very huggable. See, you fit perfectly."
Neji blushed without understanding why. "You are a very odd man."
Naruto kissed Neji's hair. "You have no idea beautiful."
"You should hate me."
"Sometimes I do."
"You should want to hurt me."
"Do you want to hurt me?"
Neji's breath hitched. "No, I really do not."
"You should never give more bad than you get and always give the most good that you can."
Neji blinked. Who would have thought this blond beach bum would be so eloquent. It was such a simply beautiful thought. 'I see why Shikamaru has kept him close for so many years, so why did they never....?'
After enough time had passed for them both to begin feeling awkward and uncomfortable, Naruto gave Neji a gentle squeeze and released him. "We really should do something about that back or yours. 'Cause I'm expecting a really big tip." One big blue eye winked playfully.
Neji was awed by the blond's ability to adapt to the situation. He nodded almost shyly and Naruto resisted the urge to tease him. He was actually kind of cute. Naruto shook his head. 'If Shika doesn't fall for him, what's the hope for me." Neji was handsome and beautiful and talented and even kind of cute. Throw in the desire to protect that he seemed to inspire and the man was irresistible. It would be sad if he wasn't starting to like Neji just a little bit.
The man stretched out on his stomach and tried not to fidget while Naruto adjusted the towel over his pretty little ass. Naruto noticed and couldn't resist the urge to tease just a little bit. He lifted the towel just enough to give the man's bare cheek an easy whack. Neji jumped, turned, and glared indignantly over his shoulder. At least he thought it was a glare, it looked more like an adorable pout to Naruto. He held back the chuckle, but didn't bother to hide the evil grin. Neji scowled, but laid back down, he couldn't think of anything else to do.
Fun and games aside, Naruto took his job very seriously. What he did or didn't do affected people's health and well being. He liked that. He liked the flexible hours and the ability to do what he wanted when he wanted, but most of all he liked helping people. He set to work, determined to get the stiff necked beauty loosened up in ways he'd never even imagined. For his part melted beneath the man's skilled hands.
"Neji." Naruto called quietly. He smiled proudly. The man was asleep. Naruto had taken care of the injured muscled first, gently working until they loosened properly. Then he began working his way all over Neji's body. He had insisted the man roll over so that he could work his legs, arms, chest, and neck. Neji was lying on his back snoozing. He looked more relaxed and calm than Naruto had ever seen him. It was a warm day. Naruto spread a second sheet over Neji's body. He wasn't in a hurry. He had no where he needed to be, so he pulled up one of the deck chairs and stayed by the man's side to be sure Neji didn't fall off of the table as he dozed. The sound of the ocean and warm breeze was soothing.
Naruto sat and thought about how things had turned out so far. He could clearly see things he should have done differently with Shikamaru. He should have confessed and left the man no wiggle room, but he'd been terrified of losing him. Neji had nothing to lose and yet somehow Naruto was afraid he'd be even more damaged if Shika refused him. There just didn't seem to be a happy ending no matter how things turned out. He looked at the man sleeping naked and unaware in front of him. 'You really are beautiful. Maybe if we'd met another way... maybe I could have fallen for you and forgotten about him. Maybe.'
The air was starting to cool a bit as the sun started to set. It was hard to believe he'd been sitting there for nearly two hours, staring at two of the most breathtaking things he knew, Neji and the ocean. "You really are beautiful Neji," Naruto whispered before getting up and packing up as much as he could before returning to his seat. He brushed a lock of long dark brown hair from Neji's face. "Neji," he called softly. "Neji, it's time to wake up."
The man stirred only a little bit, but continued to sleep. Naruto tickled the man's pale cheek with the wispy end of a lock of brown hair. "Neji, it's almost night time. You can't sleep on the deck all night." Neji swatted at his own hair and Naruto giggled. He didn't know that this was the first time since the assault that Neji had slept without a single nightmare and the man was unconsciously unwilling to leave such blissful slumber.
Neji was sleeping so cutely, Naruto was fighting an urge to tease the adorable man. He leaned in and whispered into Neji's ear, his lips were a bare centimeter from the delicate shell of the man's perfect ear. "Neji if you don't wake up right now, I'll have to do some thing evil to you." The man barely stirred.
'I can't believe he's slept like this for so long...' Naruto made a sour face. He was having trouble controlling the urge. His mischeivious nature was reaching a boiling point. He leaned over the man and stared at that lovely face. "Damnit Neji... I really am gonna do something bad if you don't get up, like right now." Finally the man listened to him. Long, thick, dark lashes fluttered as Neji's lovely violet orbs opened, then widened in surprise when they met a pair of twinkling sapphires. " 'Bout damn time." Naruto grinned, but didn't move.
Neji didn't speak for a few moments. Naruto just continued to loom over him. Neji's brow creased in confusion. On impulse, Naruto place a light kiss on the man's nose. "You are so lucky you woke up when you did." Then that tan face drew back, still grinning.
Neji sat up carefully and realized. It was dusk. Naruto had arrived in the late afternoon. He had fallen asleep and Naruto had felt compelled to stay with him. And Neji, in his turn felt compelled to once again to utter words he had so rarely used before. "I am very sorry. I've kept you here"
Naruto interrupted. "I'm starving. You got any good food here?"
Neji blinked at him. "I'm sure we have something... would you like to..." his brow creased again as he hesitated. Naruto brought out a side of him he was not familiar with and not certain he wanted to be. He was unsure and hesitant and apologetic and it disturbed him deeply. Even more disturbing, he desperately wanted the man to stay with him if only a little while longer. "Would you dine with me?"
The blond rolled those big blue eyes. "Why do you think I asked if you had anything to eat?" He shook his shaggy blond head. "Are all smart people this dense?" He coudln't help but compare Neji to Shika, they were two of the smartest people he knew and yet, neither could see their faces for their noses.
Naruto held the robe up for Neji. The man didn't look at him as he trailed behind his 'host'. Neji wasn't really sure what was in the kitchen for them to eat. Haku or one of the other assistants usually took care of such things for him. This was the first time in years that Neji had taken any kind of break from working. Haku was out with Shikamaru again. He had told Neji there would be a meal waiting in the refrigerator for him. He could only hope it would be enough for both of them.
The plate with the special snap on lid was sitting in the same place it had been the last few times Haku had been away with Shikamaru. Instead of glaring at it balefully, Neji sighed with gratitude. He placed the plate on the island and faced Naruto for the first time since they had entered the house. One golden eyebrow arched inquisitively. "So? What is it?"
Neji smiled beside himself. Naruto was behaving so relaxed and 'normal'. Neji didn't answer because he didn't know. He removed the lid and almost groaned. There were two onigiri on the plate. They were large, but surely it would not be enough for his 'guest'.
"Cool, I like onigiri. But Neji, I don't think that's meant for two."
Neji smiled a little sadly without meaining to. "Yes, Haku made it for me. He's been... out a bit lately." He avoided telling Naruto why Haku was absent. He did not want to bring up Shikamaru or the fact that the person closest to him was spending a great deal of time with the man Neji had traveled halfway around the world to make his own. It brought up unpleasant memories.
"What else ya got?" Neji's expression answered Naru's question. "Okay, let me see." The blond started openning cabinet drawers, peering into the huge walk in pantry, and finishing with his head buried in the refrigerator. He emerged with two oranges, a container of chopped melons, and a bowl of grapes. "This ought'a take care of it." He rinsed the grapes and set to pealing the oranges. Neji watched his actions with great interest.
The blond set everything out on the island and planted his cute little butt on one of the luxuriously upholstered stools and waved Neji to mimic him. Neji slid onto the stool next to Naruto. He could have sat in the other, leaving one between them but he didn't. Naruto was surprised. 'I think he's lonely.'
Neji was arrogant for good reason. He was gorgeous with his smooth pale skin, long lovely brown hair, beautifully unique violet eyes, handsome face, tall slender frame, and amazingly sexy body. He was talented and intelligent. He was what most people wanted to be and used all of that AND his arrogance like a shield to hide and protect his true self.
Neji was needy and greedy and insecure and, as he watched the man tuck a stray lock of hair behind a perfect little ear the blond couldn't hold back his smile. 'He's cute.' A moment later a thought smacked him in the forehead with the same force Iruka used to use to jump start his brain. 'Damn it! Now I want to protect him!' The thought was not comforting, it was actually rather irritating and humorous in a very ironic way. 'How the hell do you do that?!' he grumbled silently at the man delicately nibbling at his tuna filled rice ball.
"So... you don't really cook much do you?" Naruto queried trying to re-route his thought process.
Neji actually blushed. He would have denied it to his dying day, but Naruto saw it. "No, I never learned as a child and..." He stopped himself and looked away. Why was Naruto so easy to talk to? He just seemed to blurt things out when the blond man was around him.
Naruto smelled something interesting. " 'and' what Neji?" Those blue eyes held a determination that made Neji squirm. Even knowing Naruto a little bit, he knew that he wasn't going to get out of this one.
"Haku has forbidden me from using the stove or the microwave."
Naruto guffawed. His imagination was providing various scenarios that might have resulted in such an edict.
Neji blushed again and ignored it. Naruto was a handsome man in any moment, but when he smiled, truly smiled; Naruto radiated warmth and joy like the sun. It astounded Neji that he had not only conspired to steal the man's love, but even while basking in the warm glow, Neji was still unwilling to give Shikamaru up to him and would not only follow, but pursue a course that would make this wonderful man cry. Neji's heart lurched in his chest. His stomach rolled and he bolted for the relative safety of the nearest bathroom.
Naruto watched him go in dismay. He had just glimpsed the shimmering of one diamond bright tear slide from Neji's pale amethyst eye before the man had disappeared from the room. 'And now I've made him cry...' For the life of him, Naruto could not imagine why or how.
