Chapter picture: A Bitter Sweet Smile of Sorrow ----------> http://ratchets-sparkling.deviantart.com/#/d3lab27 ------------------------------------- The sun had disappeared beneath a blanket of dark clouds; Naruto turned his head towards to the sky and felt a shiver travel through his body. A foreboding feeling bubbled in his chest as he stopped on a branch. Jiraiya who was slightly ahead of him stopped a few branches ahead of him. "Naruto? Are you alright?" The question was heartfelt but Naruto could also detect a sudden sadness laced through those words; as if Jiraiya was hiding something from him that would hurt him. His curiosity got the better of him so he jumped the last metres and came to rest next to his mentor. Ready to find answers to his questions that had been ignored the entire morning. "Where are you taking me Jiraiya-sensei?" Naruto asked carefully even as he smelled the pine, rain and new leaves of Konoha. Jiraiya's shoulders seemed to slump as he turned towards Naruto with dark eyes. "Do you know who your father was Naruto?" The question seemed to cause Naruto to halt; his father? Was? He could feel tears burning in his eyes; so his father was dead. It hurt to have a small bit of hope shattered by such an innocent question. No; he did not know who his father was but he had always hoped that deep down he was still alive and didn't want to see him because of what he was. The sudden influx of emotions caused him to almost double over in pain as he shook his head; desperate to feel the pain go away that whisked across his heart in a brand new wound. "Naruto?" Jiraiya's voice was filled with concern and Naruto allowed blue eyes to connect with black and shook his in denial. He saw Jiraiya give a heavy sigh as he placed a comforting hand on his shoulder. The sudden human contact felt odd for him but he somehow leaned into the touch. It was warm and familiar... "The Sandiame really screwed up didn't he. Not even telling you about the legacy you carry on your shoulders." Jiraiya muttered to himself as he turned his eyes away in shame. It hurt to see those innocent blue eyes filled with so much pain and sorrow. He really needed to fix this... "Come Naruto; I'm taking you to your father's grave. Then I'll tell all about him. Would you like to stop at the flower shop before we go there?" Jiraiya smiled as he carded fingers through blond hair and pulled the trembling body towards his own and enveloped Naruto in a comforting embrace; Jiraiya felt anger lash through him at the feeling of Naruto's body stiffening at the contact before relenting and relaxing in his grip. There was no mistaking it; Naruto had been hurt severely. Both mentally and physically through his entire childhood. "I want to go Jiraiya-sensei." The words were filled with emotions that Naruto tried to desperately hide away but the sudden gravity of the situation was getting to him. That was one hell of a bombshell Jiraiya had dropped on him; but deep down he felt a sudden flux of peace and acceptance. He was finally going to meet his father and hopefully his mother after fourteen gruelling years of loneliness that stained his already shattered soul. A smile flitted across his lips; he was grateful to Jiraiya-sensei as he now had someone to consider as family and every time he looked upon that wizened features he felt loved like nothing he ever felt before. "Thank you." The whisper was fleeting and filled with gratitude but Jiraiya heard the words very clearly. He gave a nod to acknowledge that he had heard and led Naruto towards the centre of Konoha. He just hoped he was doing the right thing by going against the Sandiame's orders. ---------------------------- "Ne, ne? Jiraiya-sensei? What flowers do you think he would like?" Naruto asked enthusiastically as he looked at all the flowers around him. Some didn't strike him as being good enough and others made him wonder if they would be what his father liked. He was however drawn towards a bunch mixed with white roses and bright yellow sunflowers. He stepped closer to inspect them and felt his heart still in his chest. By some inexplicable way he found these flowers calling to him; yes they were perfect. "Oh? Those are good. I think he would love them." Jiraiya smiled and ruffled blond hair. He looked up a the sky and the dark clouds; they had to get moving if they didn't want to get soaked through. He placed a hand on Naruto's shoulder and led him towards the counter where they were met with teal eyes and light blond hair. Definitely part of the Yamanaka clan he noted to himself. "Hey Naruto! I didn't expect to see you here. Oh, those are lovely are they for someone special?" She asked teasingly. She was halted in her thoughts when she saw a flash of sorrow in those usually happy blue eyes. The atmosphere was suddenly heavy but she smiled kindly even though the sorrow was tangible. "You could say that." Naruto said as he gave a strained smile; she didn't know but he couldn't blame her. So he simply smiled and paid for the flowers as he was led out of the shop with Jiraiya her parting words settling a new hope in his heart. 'Good luck for the finals Naruto!' ~ The graveyard was empty and Naruto followed behind Jiraiya. The white haired Sannin seemed to know where he was going and Naruto frowned; Jiraiya's shoulders were slumped and it looked like a heavy weight had settled on them. Maybe Jiraiya-sensei was as affected by this as he was? He shook his head and followed Jiraiya as his eyes took in the many graves around him. They were all shinobi of the village with the distinctive carving of a leaf and their name. It was sad to see so many that had fallen to the hatred of the world. If only there was a way that the world of hatred and pain could be changed for the better where peace reigned supreme. His thoughts were stopped when he felt Jiraiya halt in front of him; the grave he had stopped at was simple but barren. No flowers or other offerings; but the name. That name struck a chord in Naruto; like he had known it his entire life and was a part of him just as his own name was. "This is you father Naruto. Namikaze Minato but you'd probably know him better as the Yondaime Hokage." Jiraiya was speaking but Naruto didn't hear a word. He was entranced by the name on the grave; it was calling to him. He could not make sense of the sudden sorrow that washed over him or the tingle of cold arms that wrapped around his shoulders from behind. It hurt to think and he had a sudden itch to scratch at the wounds on his wrists but refrained from doing so as Jiraiya was watching him intently. "Tou-chan?" He whispered brokenly; tears already falling down his cheeks. An image flashed in front of his eyes; messy blond hair, kind and calm blue eyes but the feature that struck him the most was that pained smile directed at him. Blood dripped from his mouth but that smile was so painful to see; knowing. It was a knowing smile; he knew he was going to die but still he died with a smile on his lips. It was heart wrenching to see and Naruto felt his heart skip a beat and a sudden pain lanced through him. He wanted to cry out but bit his lip instead; he could cry but not the way he wanted to. "Naruto?" He was deaf to everything around him; not even Jiraiya-sensei's words could reach him. He finally knew who his father was and it hurt but he was happy. Tears were streaming down his cheeks as knelt by the grave and rested his forehead against the cold granite in hopes of forming a connection that he knew existed somewhere between father and son... ~ Jiraiya felt his heart break at the sight before him. The little ball of sunshine was dulled and calmed and those blue eyes were filled with such sorrow. He wanted to gather Naruto up in his arms and never let him again so that the pain of this world could not effect him; but that was merely a childish wish that would never come to pass. Naruto was kneeling as if deep prayer but he knew better; Naruto was suffering grief and loss for the first time. Even if he had never known the love of a father it hurt him knowing that the father that could have been his entire life was dead to the world. "Naruto?" he wanted to get the blonde's attention but Naruto was lost to the world. Jiraiya flinched as his words were not heard and soft sobs sounded around the area. He knelt next to Naruto where the teen had lain his head against the stone of the grave. He laid a comforting hand on Naruto's back but the Kyuubi container didn't seem to notice at all. The body beneath his fingers trembled in sorrow and Jiraiya felt his heart break all over again. He didn't know what to do... "Jiraiya-sama?" The voice was one he recognized instantly and Jiraiya whipped around to stare at a single grey eye that was widened and swirled with well hidden turmoil. Jiraiya frowned at the appearance of the jounin but did not protest as Kakashi knelt on the other side of Naruto and place a comforting hand on the child's shoulder. "You told him?" Jiraiya gave nod and Kakashi tilted his head to stare at the sky a sigh escaping his mask covered lips. "I'm glad. I don't think I would have been able to do it." Kakashi said softly as he leaned forward and ruffled blond hair. It was hard to see his student like this and deep down he would have tried to prevent this from happening but he also knew that Naruto had a right to know even more than all the others. Both Kakashi and Jiraiya were startled when a broken cry escaped Naruto's lips; it was filled with pain and utter hopelessness but it was the acceptance thereof that left them startled. "Naruto!?" They yelled at the same time as concern filled them; this was not normal. Naruto was not responding; in fact his breathing was haggard and erratic. Kakashi placed a finger over Naruto's pulse and immediately stood up; picking Naruto up in his arms as he got ready to leave. "Kakashi?" Jiraiya asked confused but his own concern was even deeper than he could explain. "His pulse is erratic; I need to get him to the hospital. Jiraiya-sama; go speak to the Hokage; we need to make this right." The silver haired jounin noted and Jiraiya seemed to understand what the younger man was trying to say. He was slightly peeved that he could not take Naruto to the hospital himself but he knew that there were things that the Hokage needed to clear. So with a nod both went their separate ways. -------------------------- "Kakashi-sama? You may see Naruto-kun if you want." The nurse replied and Kakashi nodded; following quietly behind the medic-nin until they reached a quiet room. Naruto was fast asleep in a white bed. Naruto looked peaceful as his chest rose at regular intervals but Kakashi knew better. Naruto was probably caught up in one hell of a nightmare. "Will he be ok?" He asked the medic-nin next to Naruto's bed; monitoring the blonde's heartbeat and blood pressure. There was a few minutes of silence until the medic-nin turned towards him and gave a small smile. "Yes Kakashi-sama. Your student overdid it a bit; he's just exhausted so I put him in a healing sleep. He should wake up three days from now; chakra replenished and wounds healed." Kakashi nodded as he sat on the side of the bed. They were so much alike; it was unnatural. Naruto and Minato were exactly the same person; only one suffered much more and still lived through it with a smile on his face. He knew the pain hidden in that smile; saw it everyday and he felt guilty because he ignored it one time too many. Right now he was cursing his ignorance and his inability to do anything about it. He had left Sasuke to train for the rest of the day whilst he went back to Konoha for supplies; he had not expected to see the sight he had when he had travelled through the graveyard. It was quiet for a long time and Kakashi stared at the clouds; it was going to rain. He needed to inform Sasuke that he would be back later so with a few quick hand seals he summoned Pakkun. "Yo; what can I do for you boss?" The small pug inquired and Kakashi gave him a small scroll. "Take this to Sasuke please and tell him I'll be back a bit later." The pug nodded and disappeared. A sigh escaped his lips; now he only had to wait for Jiraiya-sama to come back. He sat quietly at Naruto's side as his memories and thoughts swamped his mind completely. He no longer kept track of time and he didn't feel the need to. ~ "Sarutobi-sensei?" Jiraiya asked as he tried to decipher the emotions dancing across his sensei's features. It didn't take long for the Hokage to nod. Wizened eyes smiled as the Sandiame approached the back room of his office; beckoning Jiraiya to follow him. Jiraiya followed obediently although he was somewhat confused until they stepped into the room. "As the Sandiame Hokage I give Namikaze Naruto the right to wear this over his uniform." Hiruzen said softly as he pulled the cloak from the rack it had lain in; neatly folded and handed the soft white material to Jiraiya. "Are you sure Hokage-sama? Some may not like it." Jiraiya said cautiously as he gripped the white material as he followed the Hokage back into his office. The older man gave a tired sigh but a gentle smile flitted across his features. It was time to right his previous wrongs. "Minato had asked me to give this to Naruto when I felt he was ready. It was his last wish that his son would be able to proudly be a part of his name. I selfishly chose to keep his last relic hidden away from his son because I believed that it was for his protection only to realize I was dishonouring the dead and keeping his son from finally finding closure. I want to see him wearing it Jiraiya; even if it is the last thing I do. I made a mistake with that boy and he deserves better. You better look after him." Sarutobi said softly as he turned his eyes towards the window and stared at the village below. "Thank you; Naruto will be happy." Jiraiya said with a smile of his own; Naruto now finally had a legacy to call his own. "I know. May his happiness be the strength of this village when there is none left. I'll make the announcement at the chuunin finals; now go." Sarutobi said as he returned to his huge stack of paperwork. ------------------------------- "Jiraiya-sama?" Kakashi said as he felt a presence enter through the window; he saw a flash of white as a stream of hair followed behind the legendary Sannin. He saw black eyes look over his student before settling into the chair next to Naruto's bed. "How is he?" Jiraiya asked as his eyes connected with Kakashi's. "He is just exhausted. The medic-nin said to give him three days of rest and then he would be back on his feet." Jiraiya nodded at the answer. A silence settled between them that was not uncomfortable but held a tinge of regret. "What did Hokage-sama say?" Kakashi asked as he looked over Naruto; noticing the slight droplets of sweat on the teen's forehead. "He is making the announcement in four days when the finals begin." Kakashi let out a sigh of relief. "Good." He said softly and smiled; Naruto really deserved it. "Kakashi; I'm going to watching from the shadows but you need to be there for him. Letting this information slip is going to be hard on him; some will treat him better and some will express more hatred than before because of jealousy. He needs protection and I'm trusting you to look after him when I'm away." Kakashi nodded as he stood up; fingers brushing blond locks from a sweaty forehead. "They're so much alike." He said softly and affectionately. "It's about time I get back to Sasuke. I'll see you in four days Jiraiya-sama." Jiraiya nodded and waved a dismissive hand as a gesture of goodbye. In a flash of leaves and smoke the jounin disappeared and left Jiraiya alone with his godchild. "He'd be so proud of you kid. You truly are a genius; no matter what other's tell you. Only believe in yourself and others will follow after you quickly." He said with a smile. He had three days before Naruto woke up and he wanted to be here when those blue eyes opened again so with a heavy heart he placed a kiss on a sweaty forehead and left through the window. He had felt a flare of Orochimaru's chakra a while ago and he needed to track it and try and find the cunning snake before tragedy struck again. He just hoped Naruto would be alright by himself for the next three days. ~ He was cold; his entire body shivered with the revelation. He was tracing a path through the sewers of his mind where a familiar chakra burned bright and potent. He didn't want to meet with the fox again so instead he avoided the path that would lead there in the first place. Naruto allowed his footsteps to lead him instead of trying to find a path that would confuse his already tired mind. A familiar presence whispered across his skin as he came to stop in front of a door. He frowned; he didn't remember this the last time he was here but then again he didn't have much time considering he was about to die. The door was large and wooden with a carving of Charon; the master of the soul fairy to hell. He frowned; such a dark carving but the presence he felt behind it was a part of him. He could feel it. He wanted to experience more of it. "Not yet Naruto. We can't merge yet." A sudden clamp of an icy cold hand on his wrist halted his progress to opening the mysterious door. He followed the hand with his eyes until he reached blue eyes; the same as his and blond hair just as unruly as his own. "Tou-chan?" He asked uncertainly; he had seen this man before. When an image flickered across his eyes at the graveyard but what he realized was that this was the man that was also carved on the Hokage mountain. "Yes Naruto. You finally hear my voice and feel my soul but you try and open the door. Oh dear; that could have been troublesome." Minato sighed as he sat down and motioned for Naruto to join him. Naruto sat down but the awe did not fade from expressive blue eyes. "Are you really my father?" Naruto did not know why but he sounded uncertain. "Yes. You are probably curious as to everything aren't you?" Minato chuckled as he saw the enthusiastic nod Naruto gave him. "I can't stay long but you must know that I am always here. I may not be able to talk to you all the time but I will sometimes talk to you. It gets lonely here with no one but that noisy fox to talk to. I can always hear you so don't be afraid to not say anything." "Why are you here?" Naruto asked curiously. "Hmmm; well you see. I was by no means supposed to end up here but something with the sealing process went wrong and merged our souls together. I still can't understand it fully myself Naruto but I managed to seal my soul away from yours for the time being; right behind that door. There will come a day when we will become one in the same person but for now our souls are slowly mingling but have not forged a complete merge. That's why you have so many of my traits; like those nightmares and these;" Minato grabbed Naruto's hand in his and pulled up the sleeve to reveal white bandages stained in blood. " B-b-but...I..." Naruto tried to pull back; his secret. He was surprised when cool fingers brushed across his forehead and placed a comforting kiss there. "Don't worry Naru-chan. I can't blame you for doing it nor am I going to try and stop you. I know Naruto because I did the same thing; even up until my death. If you find someone you trust enough then tell them; don't be afraid of judgement." Minato said softly as he saw tears form in those big blue eyes; thumbs brushing them away gently. "Be careful Naruto. I can't stay more but don't open that door until you are ready." Minato said seriously his ghostly form fading from sight his last words left an impression on Naruto's grieving heart. 'I love you son; don't forget that.' ---------------------------------------- He was tired and his body was aching with stiff muscles; Naruto groaned as his mind regained its consciousness of the world around him. He also felt better than he had in a long time; his memory was still a bit hazy but he remembered Jiraiya-sensei had taken him to the graveyard. The conversation he had with his father and the strange inkling feeling that Kakashi-sensei was also there. He sighed as he turned on his side; he was tired and he wanted nothing more than to fall asleep again. "Naruto?" Blue eyes flickered open to stare at black. A smile split his face; Jiraiya-sensei was here. His heart beat picked up a bit at the smile he saw curled on Jiraiya's lips. He smiled back as he sat up slowly; wary of the pain in his muscles but ignored it even when Jiraiya looked at him with concern. "Are you alright Naruto?" Jiraiya asked softly. He noticed that Naruto's blue eyes were clearer and less clouded with unknown emotions but a lingering sorrow also intensified around his blond student. "I'm alright." Naruto said softly; head bowed as he observed the white sheets that were draped over him. "That's good. Do you know what day it is today Naruto?" Jiraiya asked and chuckled when brows furrowed and a confused stare was directed at him. "It's the day before the finals begin. I hope you're ready." Jiraiya sing songed cheerily; he too was looking forward to Naruto's match. "Yes I am;" The smile was bright and determined so Jiraiya nodded before unrolling his large scroll. "I spoke to the Sandiame Naruto and he has agreed to let you take on your father's last name. He'll be announcing it tomorrow." Jiraiya said and was rewarded with a large smile and blue eyes that sparkled with genuine happiness. "Really?" Naruto asked; just to be sure. He had never felt happier; he was allowed to carry his father's last name. It made his heart jump with joy, it finally felt as if he belonged. "Yup; Kiddo. He also wanted me to give this to you." There was a short silence as a puff of smoke drifted in the air and as it cleared Naruto's eyes widened as he saw the red and white cloak in Jiraiya's hands. He was surprised when the cloak was placed in his hands; the material was soft and smelled of summer rain and pine trees. He brought the material to his nose and inhaled; it smelled nice. "It smells like him." Naruto murmured. How he knew that Jiraiya could only guess at. But Naruto's happiness was all that mattered now so he sat down in the chair next to Naruto's hospital bed. "I had to hide the writing on the back with a henge considering many people will be upset if it was still there. But Sandiame-sama has given you permission to wear it. It maybe a bit big for you but I think it will still fit. Even if you are still a shrimp." Jiraiya chuckled; he had just insulted Naruto's height but the blond seemed too happy to notice. "Naruto?" He asked when he saw tears shimmer in blue eyes before slowly falling on the material. He wasn't prepared for ball of energy that hit his chest. A 'oomph' left his lungs in rush and arms wound their way around his waist and gripped onto white hair. The embrace was fierce but it held a gentleness that made Jiraiya relax and place careful fingers in blonde hair. "Thank you; Jiraiya-sensei." "Anytime, kid. Anytime." He said with a smile. --------------------------------------- ------------------------------------ Thanks for the read SnowShadowPassWhile AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
