Thank you to Moodysavage for the awesome BETA and cheerleading. She's really helping me post this as fast as I am, and she keeps me from doubting myself.
888 Things were not going the way Sasuke had planned. It would appear that his son had his father’s penchant for pranks and annoying people. That combined with his natural talent and chakra control made the boy a one child wrecking crew. So far Kyusuke had "accidentally" set his yukata on fire and knocked down one of the posts holding up the front awning of his home while sparring. As icing on the cake the little terror had informed Sasuke that his goal in life was to become a Nara, he wanted to marry his Uncle Shikamaru. Sasuke had gotten a migraine from that one. Twice now Kyusuke had been summoned to the Hokage’s office during their prearranged visitation. Once because he had fused antlers to Akamaru’s head because his Uncle Kiba had lost a bet and not paid up. Sasuke still wasn’t sure how he’d gotten the antlers to stay on or how he’d removed them. Some things, Sasuke decided, were better left a mystery. If his time with Orochimaru had taught him anything that would have been it. The last afternoon with his son had been only four days ago and it had once again been spent in the Hokage’s office because his son just happened to mention to his Aunty Hinata (in front of her father) that the man trying to get a catering contract for the Hyuuga clan had refused to serve him or his father at his store and restaurant. The man had been thrown out of the compound and now accused the boy of interfering in a business arrangement and defaming his establishment. Sasuke felt a headache coming on; he had been getting those a lot these days. He’d finally stepped in, since Naruto was away on a mission, Hinata seemed to be getting run roughshod over and Kyusuke seemed to have Naruto’s temper. He’d cleared his throat and leveled the man with his very best Uchiha glare. "Do you serve Naruto or Kyusuke at your restaurant?" The man had simply gaped at him so Sasuke raised a brow. "Do you ensure they receive service if they shop in your store?" Kyusuke had once more interfered snapping, "We aren’t ALLOWED in his stupid store." The man glared pointing a finger at the child only to have Sasuke step into his line of sight blocking any further attacks on him. "I believe I asked the question. They are simple yes or no questions. Are you capable of answering?" When the man admitted to refusing them service Sasuke and Shikamaru had taken Kyusuke out and left the merchant to Tsunade. Today was another of his afternoons with Kyusuke and he could only wonder what his son would do to him today. When he showed up, the boy was unusually subdued. He knew instantly something was wrong by the dark circles under the child’s eyes. "Kyusuke? What’s wrong?" Blue eyes looked up at him and his son just sighed. He panicked, "Tell me what is wrong. I can help." Rolling his eyes the boy shook his head. "You can’t help. You can’t even leave the stupid village." Kyusuke closed his eyes looking much older then four and for a moment Sasuke hated the way ninja life aged a person well before their years. Mature or not his son was still only a child. Were he not a ninja prodigy he would just be getting ready for school, not part of the way through an already accelerated program. "Dad’s gone. I always get to sleep with him when he’s home and when he’s gone I gotta stay with whoever is home but its never warm enough." Swallowing Sasuke thought for a minute. "Why don’t we… um, skip training today and we can just get some food and find a good tree to eat under." He waited while the boy eyed him in suspicion then relaxed when the tiny raven nodded. Sasuke was shocked by the instinct to pick Kyusuke up but held himself back, Shikamaru would probably put him in a shadow hold if he tried. Instead he walked next to his son and his body guard to a shop where they got fresh bento boxes and retreated to a grassy hill with a large shady tree. Shikamaru went to where he could watch clouds but still hear the young Uzumaki in case he was needed. Settling against the tree Sasuke felt bad for the kid. He seemed too tired to even eat. "I spent one night with him. Just one night sleeping next to Naruto and it took me three weeks not to freeze each night. I can’t imagine always having it then trying to make due without it until he comes back from a mission." When blue eyes met his they held surprise at someone understanding. "Where are you staying? At the Nara’s?" "No. I’m stuck at the Hyuuga compound with Aunt Hinata. It’s so boring and quiet there. Uncle Shika works all day so his mom would have to take care of me and I stayed there last time." Kyusuke yawned slumping over a little. "Dad snores really loud and it’s SO quiet there." Setting his lunch aside Sasuke hesitated then pulled his child into his lap. Kyu stiffened and pushed for a moment until he felt Sasuke’s lean chest under his ear. He could hear the heartbeat of the other man and it took no time at all to lull him into a fitful sleep. Naruto had often used the same method to get his son to sleep when he was upset or scared. Shikamaru frowned; the Kid had stopped talking and eating. Suddenly he freaked thinking the snaky bastard had actually run off with Naruto’s son. He was much more shocked at the reality of Sasuke breathing slow with his eyes closed, but obviously alert while holding a sleeping Kyusuke. If he didn’t hate the fucker for doing so much damage to his friend he’d think it was a perfect picture of a father caring for his child. 888 Sighing Sasuke stood under the tree watching the Nara take his son away again. His heart clenched when Sasuke looked back over his shoulder because it was the first time he’d ever looked back. He swallowed and cleared his throat, the Uchiha trying to reign in his emotions. He didn’t want to get his hopes up. One good afternoon was a step forward but with Kyu he could end up two steps back the next time they met. "He’s a good kid." Sasuke tensed, but did not jump as Kakashi’s voice came from just over his shoulder. Snorting Sasuke shook his head. "No he’s not. He’s a perfect little hellion. He’s Naruto’s instinct with my focus. I’m really glad Naruto’s raising him, anyone less pure and he’d be planning to take over the world." Frowning Sasuke sighed. "Dobe doesn’t punish him though, he’s running wild. Everyone seems to dote upon him. I don’t care what Naruto said, no training for a week really meant no training with anyone but me." "You know him pretty well for having been away so long." Kakashi leaned against the tree appraising Sasuke. Sasuke’s fingers went to his pocket running his thumb in a swirl following the pattern of the Uzumaki patch he’d stolen as a boy. It was stupid but it was his little piece of Naruto. "No better then he knows me." "Tall, dark and cryptic is great... really, it works for you." Kakashi smirked and then shook his head. "But I’m here for answers Sasuke. Why are you here? You didn’t come back for Naruto. You stayed for Kyusuke, so why are you sending Sai off with warnings?" "Because we belong to each other. We always have. I know it. He knows it. Even you know it." Black eyes met silver. "I didn’t come back because I didn’t belong here. I couldn’t trust these people. They betrayed my entire clan. They betrayed my brother. Then they lied to me. The truth is I wanted almost all of them dead. I never did anything about it though. The Dobe would become Hokage and this place might be more like what it was meant to be. He’s kind of simple that way." He didn’t know why he was telling Kakashi all this. "I had intended to come back, once Itachi was dead. When he told me the truth…" Sasuke’s eyes were glassy, he was lost somewhere and for a moment Kakashi understood completely. "Then I was covered in blood. His blood. Uchiha blood and killing him hadn’t changed anything. My family couldn’t rest. The hatred and anger weren’t gone." Filled with exhaustion Sasuke folded his legs staring out over the village and its beauty in the setting sun. "They’d just been turned on the people here. The ones who’d ordered the massacre. The people who’d let me live alone and stared at me with pity. Really who leaves an 8 year old, ninja in training or not in the place they’d found their entire clan slaughtered. The same people who left an innocent child cold, hungry, and alone." He would never understand how having such similar childhoods, he and Naruto had turned out so drastically different. "He loves this place and all of the people in it even the ones who still refuse him. He protects them." Frowning beneath his mask Kakashi couldn’t stop himself. "You knew he wanted you to come back. Why did you do that to him? Why give him one night and leave him again? You hurt him Sasuke, over and over but I never thought you were cruel just blinded by revenge. That night you’d had your revenge; you lay with him and left him again. You know Naruto well. You had to have known how that would affect him." "I wanted one night. I needed something else to carry with me. I couldn’t come back. I love him but I didn’t think it was enough to push away what I felt for this village. That’s why I got up and left. That night I just wanted to have him." Uchiha did not cry and so Sasuke swallowed before continuing. "When I heard they were harboring my bother’s son I was furious. He was still a blood traitor. Even if he did it for the right reasons, what he did was unforgivable. Seeing a blue eyed Uchiha."Sasuke laughed. "My mother would have spoiled him so completely it disgusts me just to think about." The tears were harder to fight after that thought. "I never watched children. I hated children when I was one. And I had no intention of continuing to curse future generations with the Uchiha blood limit." He looked up at his former sensei. "I think sometimes there is a reason they are red. I don’t know if anyone has come into them without blood being shed one way or another. Kyusuke won’t talk about how his were activated." Sasuke tried to put his thoughts into order, he’d had no one to talk to in such a long time and now that he’d started it seemed he couldn’t stop. "A blue eyed Uchiha he was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen, until I saw Naruto again. No one should age that fucking well." The last bit had been muttered. "I thought coming back for Naruto was the wrong thing. I didn’t want to grow to hate Naruto for making me be somewhere I didn’t want to be. If I had known he was pregnant… which is a completely different conversation we need to have because I might be a ninja prodigy but the only genius I know just snickers when I ask how it is a man became pregnant, had a child, and survived both experiences. I would have come back if I had known. I would never have let him do this, face that alone. I don’t know how to tell him I was wrong Kakashi. I hardly notice or care about the rest of the village. Having Kyusuke to focus on and Naruto to worry about consumes everything." In that moment Kakashi hummed his approval of the raven’s turmoil. At least he knew the man wasn’t going to wreak the same sort of havoc he had in the past. Though the ensuing battle did promise to be horribly exciting. "You do what you’ve always done Sasuke. Ignore him or challenge him, either way Naruto won’t be able to resist." Standing Kakashi started to move away, pulling his book out. "If you hurt either Uzumaki they will never find your body Sasuke. Itachi was good, I was always better." It took another week for Naruto to finish his mission and return home. The mission had become more complicated then planned. He tried hard not to take overly long missions but he was a ninja and didn’t have a lot of choice. He wanted to be Hokage one day and he didn’t have the first clue how people had children and families and still managed to be great ninja. He’d gone home, cleaned up and was on his way to the Hyuuga compound to collect his son when he stopped, gaping at what he saw. There at a fruit stand stood two ravens, one much smaller then the other, both sniffing and testing tomatoes. Hinata was with them instead of Shikamaru so Naruto was sure this was not a planned play date. The blond felt his heart stop when he heard his son’s voice, "Sasuke this is a good one." The boy passed the ripe red fruit up to his biological father. Something had changed because when he’d left Kyusuke had been in a positively foul mood for weeks only having gotten worse as Naruto’s mission neared. Now the boy was almost smiling and not calling the Uchiha ‘hey you’. @ 888 I'm trying to move us along here. I feel like this fic is starting to drag. Let me know what you think!
