Chapter 4 Morning came with the whisper of Sasuke’s breath on the back of his neck. Naruto looked down to see a pale, muscular arm wrapped around his chest possessively. All of Sasuke’s features were like that, so very masculine and strong. He’d grown into the picture of perfection, all sharp lines and defined musculature that added up to the man Sasuke had become. He was so much more than that though. He’d grown in so many ways over the years, and Naruto was grateful just then to be able to witness the transformation. Though the room was completely enclosed, Naruto could feel it when the sun rose over the water. From behind closed eyes he could see the fire burning over the surface of the waves as it reached higher and higher with each passing moment. He wanted to see the sun today, and after last night he was sure Sasuke would let him. He would go outside today. Suddenly the arm around him tightened and Naruto could feel his lover’s heart racing against his back. Sasuke’s breath was shallow and harsh against his skin now, and Naruto suddenly knew why. “I don’t regret it.” The tension was instantly gone, but Sasuke’s hold on him didn’t ease. He felt warm dry lips press lightly against his shoulder and the arm underneath his head slid down to wrap around him. Sasuke’s legs entwined with his at the same time and Naruto felt completely sheltered and to his surprise, safe. Nothing could ever hurt him here. “Having you here is so much better than I ever imagined…” Sasuke said quietly as his hands brushed over Naruto’s heated skin. It was an invitation that he wanted very much to accept, but he knew he couldn’t. His body was tender. He’d expected it, but there wasn’t really any way to prepare for it so as gently as he could he eased away from Sasuke. He sat up slowly and turned to look down on sleepy black eyes. Leaning in for a moment to lay a chaste kiss on Sasuke’s lips, he gently slid out of bed and walked tenderly to the bathroom. An uncomfortable half hour later he came out to the smell of breakfast. They ate in comfortable silence, sending knowing looks over the table at each other like teenagers. Naruto couldn’t think of one reason why anything was wrong with that at all so he went with it. When they finished eating Sasuke disappeared into the bathroom for a shower and Naruto, having already taken one, spent a few minutes going through his clothes to find something that might be considered attractive. He’d never wanted to impress anyone before with his looks so it was a little strange and somewhat difficult to decided, but the look on Sasuke’s face when he came out of the bath was enough to wash away any insecurities he might have had. He’d have to ask Sasuke later to get him a few more slightly fitted t’s and jeans since he only had the one pair. “I’d like to go outside today.” Naruto said with not even a hint of the nervousness he was feeling coming out in his voice. Sasuke just smiled and nodded before digging around for clothes. When he dropped the towel he was wearing to the floor, Naruto couldn’t control the flashes racing through his mind of what they’d done the night before. He felt his skin flush red over the entire surface of his body and hoped that Sasuke was too preoccupied to notice. When Sasuke bent to pull up his pants Naruto turned away in an attempt to keep his nose from bleeding. Sasuke shuffled around a bit more in the bedroom while Naruto made his way toward the door. When he came out he had a new pair of sandals in his hands and tossed them to Naruto before slipping into his own at the door. The lock clicked open with the turn of a key and they were making their way out of the compound. Sasuke coyly reached out and took Naruto’s hand in his, and when their fingers laced together a glance told Naruto that Sasuke was smiling. An elevator took them up four flights before opening to a small ante room. The last door opened and Naruto had to shield his eyes as the sun light burned through his unaccustomed eye lids. The heat was amazing. After being without the sun for what seemed to be never ending days, Naruto took in that light as if it were the cure to everything. Sasuke’s hand pulled him further into the light and slowly his eyes adjusted. He let his hand fall away and looked around at the island. It was small, just like he remembered, and only a small portion was above water. There were several small stone formations and trees scattered around the entrance to the main door, and a beach leading out to the water. It was beautiful and serene in a way that Naruto hadn’t imagined it being. He’d thought only the worst since he’d arrived, and to face how wrong he was about it was jarring. Sasuke let his hand fall away as he moved toward the single stone mountain that rose out of the ground behind the entrance. There were several places that could be used as lookout points from where Naruto could see and Sasuke made his way up to one of them. A head of orange hair peaked out over the stones and Naruto knew it was Jugo. He could see they were talking but he couldn’t hear anything so he decided to take a look around. The water’s edge was close so he drifted toward it. He stepped out of his sandals and bent down to roll up his pants when he heard his name being called. He looked out over the water, and there standing about fifty feet off the shore was Shikamaru. He was alone and looked irritated, but other than that he seemed fine. Naruto immediately darted out across the water toward his friend when suddenly he did a nose dive directly into the surf. It was literally a blast of cold water in the face. He had no chakra and a wave of helplessness washed over him as he floundered in the shallow waves. Sasuke was at his side instantly pulling him up out of the salty water and back to the pale sandy beach as he coughed away lung fulls of water. When he calmed he realized Sasuke was holding him close and whispering comforting words in his ear. Shikamaru was now only about 20 feet away still standing on the water when Naruto looked up. He had a look of deep concentration and still that look of irritation. “Naruto, what happened?” He asked with his head cocked just slightly to the side as if looking at the situation from a different angle would help to clear up his confusion. “I just forgot, that’s all… Nothing to worry about… I’ll be used to it soon enough.” Naruto said as he looked back to Sasuke who was now smiling at him with just the slightest quirk of his lips and the warmest eyes he’d ever seen. He reached up and brushed away a strand of hair that had fallen into his eyes just as Sasuke started to lean down, but before their lips could meet Shikamaru cleared his throat. They both startled slightly and looked up at the now scowling man standing on the water. “What the hell is going on Naruto. Uchiha here has set up one hell of a barrier that reeks of your chakra, and refuses to talk to me for three days while I wait to see you only to find you in some kind of sick romance with him… and what the hell is that thing with the napkin wrapped around it?” He was pointing just over Naruto’s shoulder and there was no need to look at it because he knew what Shikamaru was talking about. Things just then were confusing and since last night, much easier to just put out of his mind so discussing this with anyone, much less his best friend right then was not what he wanted to do. But the air was stagnant with angry anticipation from both Shikamaru and Sasuke so Naruto decided to keep his focus on something… anything else. “What are you doing here Shikamaru? Don’t you have more important things to do than hang around here for days at a time?” His attempt at keeping things light fell far short of the mark, but his smile didn’t waver and his eyes were clear of the turmoil he was feeling. Shikamaru just huffed and crossed his arms over his chest as if to physically restrain himself from doing anything rash. Naruto lowered his eyes and tried to focus on Sasuke, but the pure hatred he saw written there was more disturbing than he expected. He struggled slightly against Sasuke’s hold and stood himself up. He felt vulnerable, and raising himself to Shikamaru’s level helped him settle himself again. He brushed off some of the sand that clung to his wet clothes and looked over as Sasuke stood up next to him. “You should go, I’ll talk to Shika and everything will be alright. Just give us a minute ok?” There was a struggle happening that shown through in Sasuke’s eyes, but he didn’t say anything. He just pulled Naruto to him and ran his hands over his back, sliding one just slightly under his shirt to run his fingers over Naruto’s damp back. The touch was intimate and so new to Naruto that his whole body seemed to shake with sudden and barely controlled lust, but they had an audience and Naruto was no exhibitionist. He pulled away gently and Sasuke kissed him chastely before shooting a venomous glare toward Shikamaru. He let go of Naruto then and turned to walk away leaving only the sound of his soft footfalls in the sand to be heard as they faded over the surf. ooOOoo “Naruto! What’s going on?” Shikamaru all but yelled when they felt the slight air of privacy fall over them. He’d come almost close enough to touch when Naruto had his back turned. Naruto turned back to him and stepped forward wanting to pull his best friend into a hug only to find himself running face first into an invisible barrier. He put his hands up to run over the surface and felt the intimate hum of his own chakra. His eyebrows pinched together to form a deep wrinkle between them as he tried to figure out what he was feeling, but he couldn’t sense the structure behind it, only the distinct connection he had to it. He backed away from it suddenly when he felt his chest tighten, and closed his eyes to regain his composure. “Hey, Shika…” Naruto said as he opened his eyes. He smiled, but without Sasuke there to reassure him it felt forced. “I’m doing ok… how did you find me?” “I didn’t find you Naruto… I knew where you went, I just couldn’t catch you fast enough to keep you from falling into that bastard’s trap.” Shikamaru sighed and let his arms fall to his side. “I never thought you’d be willing to give up so much for him. I still don’t believe it. You are the Hokage, and the best one we’ve had as far as I’m concerned. We need you to come back… I need you to come back. No one really knows you’re gone yet or that anything’s even wrong. If you could just take down the barrier we can go home and you can visit sometimes.” Naruto just stared at him as the words turned to a dull roar in his ears. He couldn’t think about this right now. He couldn’t think about it ever. This morning he’d been so happy, last night had been amazing. He couldn’t risk losing that, and that was exactly what Shikamaru was talking about. His hands were shaking and he tried to cover the weakness with small gestures like rubbing them on the front of his pants and straightening his shirt, but it was only bringing more attention to them so he slid them in his pockets. “I don’t want to go home. I’m fine and you can tell everyone that I’m staying. Konohamaru is ready to be the next Hokage so just go ahead and let him take over until it can be made official…” “Have you lost your mind!” Shikamaru interrupted, his hands laying against the barrier as if he could force it to let him through. His eyes were blazing with confusion and frustration. “You’re a prisoner here and you still haven’t told me what that thing is, all you can talk about it what you want me to do when I go back to the village without you… I’m not leaving unless you come with me. This is insane and you need to wake up Naruto. I know you love him. What you feel for him borders on obsession, but I never judged you for it or even chastised you when you know you deserved it. I’ve watched you hide yourself away for years waiting for him to come back when we all knew it was a lost cause, but you loved him and that was enough for you. This on the other hand is sick. He’s trapped you here like a wild animal and playing pretend like you’re lovers on equal ground, but that’s not possible. What is that thing Naruto. I can feel it weakening me, and the moment I got within ten feet of you my feet sank through the water like I have no chakra at all.” Naruto looked over at the orb and felt cold anger settle into his gut. He was powerless, and that had been easy to ignore while basking in the glow of Sasuke’s attention, attention he’d been craving his whole life, but he could deny the pressing helplessness no more. It wasn’t just draining him, it drained anyone that came near him and that not only made going home impossible, but also denied him his friends. They would be vulnerable around him and even though he was sure they would tell him it didn’t matter, it would be a lie. More than that, he wouldn’t want them to have to make the sacrifice in the first place. “Just go Shika. The orb absorbs all chakra accept Sasuke’s. He’s tied it to me so I can’t leave, and obviously it keeps anyone from helping me leave too. I’m trapped here, and Sasuke will never let me leave so all you can do is go home and prepare the village to be without me.” Shikamaru stepped forward, obviously forgetting about the barrier, and hit it hard with his hand as he reached out to comfort Naruto. In his anger he punched at it, but without any chakra there wasn’t much behind it and the barrier didn’t budge. His hands rested on the surface as he pressed his forehead against it and sighed in resignation. “You can’t just give in to him Naruto. This isn’t real. If he really loved you he wouldn’t hide you away like a possession. He’s insane and you acquiescing to his demands won’t make this any easier on you…” “I KNOW THAT!” Naruto screamed. It wasn’t fair though to be angry at Shikamaru. He was only forcing him to face what he’d been avoiding dealing with since he’d arrived. “I’m sorry Shika, I just don’t know what to do. I’ve never had to live without my chakra before and I don’t see any way out of this. He’s so strong and he really doesn’t need an advantage like this, but with me completely powerless he knows I can’t fight him and he knows I know it too. He doesn’t want to fight me he wants to have me and now that he does he’ll never let me go.” The barrier flickered a bit when Shikamaru stepped back, his arms falling limply to his sides. Naruto watched as a single tear slid down his face before he quietly started to speak. “This is my fault. I saw what you were going through years ago. I knew he was dangerous and I knew you couldn’t be rational when it came to him. I could have forced you to deal with it, I should have. You never would have left and allowed yourself to be trapped this way. You can’t even see it, but he’s holding you with more than just the loss of your chakra. If you could leave, do you really think you would? You’ve given up without even trying, and I think it’s because deep down you want him to take the choice out of your hands because that’s truly where the madness lies, isn’t it. If you had to choose between us or him it would drive you insane. “I can’t do anything to help you if you don’t really want it, but I’ll tell you what I can see so far and I’ll let you decide what to do with it. That thing is sucking out you’re chakra and mine right now. The feeling in the barrier has shifted and my chakra is now woven into it so you are powering this wall between us, not Uchiha. That mean he’s not just taking your chakra, he’s using it. I can only think of three good reasons he’d do that. One, he has to use the chakra somehow or that thing will overload, two, he’s keeping you weak because somehow it will backfire on him if he doesn’t or three, he’s not as strong as you are and he doesn’t have enough chakra to power it himself. All of these reasons make him weak. There is the off chance that it’s just easier for him to have you power the barrier so he doesn’t have to bother with it, but I don’t think so. On top of all of that this is an insult to anyone that comes looking for you because technically you are the one keeping us away. “You have always been a terrible spy because you have no ability to stay hidden at all, but you are an excellent listener. Figure out what he’s doing and how he’s doing it. Come back to us Naruto. There’s no one else that’s ready to take your place so you need to come home. I will cover for you as long as I can, but sooner or later you will have to come back. You are the Hokage. You’ve made promises that you have to keep. I don’t believe for a moment that you don’t want to be Hokage anymore or that you’re ok with this after all the work you’ve done. You’ve reached your main goal, but you still have unfinished business. Don’t go down in history as the Hokage that abandoned us for the obsessive lust of a criminal. You’re better than that.” Shikamaru turned and waded through the water toward the mainland. Naruto’s mouth opened and closed several times wanting to say something, anything, to keep him from going, but nothing would come. Shikamaru was about 15 feet away and wading through hip deep water when he suddenly stopped and pulled himself up and stood on the surface. He turned around one last time to look at Naruto with hard unforgiving eyes before leaping away. Naruto’s anger flared hot. I love feedback... I need feedback... I live for feedback!
