Kinda
felt like I left off at a weird point last chapter but here we go with the next
one anyway. Look out for review responses at the end, one of which I feel
slightly nervous about writing.

The
house was more alive than Sasuke had ever seen it and it had him blinking in
amazement. Even when his parents had been alive and his clan still existed the
main Uchiha house had always felt slightly cold to him even with his mother’s
constant attempt to bring life and warmth into their home and keep it welcoming
for her boys.
Despite
her efforts thought there had always been places in the home, rooms and corners
that the sunlight just couldn’t penetrate and the area inside their walls had
never been as warm as the open spaces of the world outside of the Uchiha’s strict
standards.
But now
all the sliding doors and windows thrown open to allow the house to air and the
house was filled with the soft rustle of work and quite chatter from those that
that had showed up to help him recreate his home.
“Thank
you for this Sakura,” Sasuke said quietly as he thought his old friends must be
taking time out of their own lives to help and days off to help him and his
teammates with their work.
“It’s no
problem really,” Sakura said as she picked up a feather duster, “Tsunade let me
glance at the report from your team’s interrogation and you all must be pretty
tired since you were only released two days ago. Beside this is a pretty big
house which means there’s a lot of work to do.”
“It
could have been worse,” the Uchiha said as he pulled a stained sheet from a
chair, “none of us withheld any information so Ibiki really didn’t do all that
much. They were the hardest on Karin and myself because of our connections to
Orochimaru.”
“Is she
okay, I haven’t seen her here this morning,” the pinkette asked as she glared
at the cobwebs in the corners on the living room ceiling, wondering how she was
going to get up there without having to use her chakra.
“She’s
staying in my aunt and uncles old house, it was he cleanest one we could find
for her to rest in while she recovers and this house is cleaned,” the Uchiha
explained.
“Why
aren’t you there resting too, I'm sure Suigetsu and Juugo can watch over things
here for you,” Sakura glanced over to where Suigetsu was sitting on the veranda
with Shikamaru, the shark boy scratching his head as he glared down at the
shogi board between them.
“I don’t
get this stupid game,” Suigetsu mumbled as he moved a random piece, “why don’t
you just play with Sasuke and then he can rest like Sakura said.”
“I don’t
think so, “Shikamaru said before he moved Suigetsu’s piece back to where it had
been before explaining to him what was wrong with it, “you’ve already broken
two of his mother’s vases today and it’s not even lunch time yet so I don’t
think he wants your help. This is your punishment.”
“I could
always go and help Ino in the kitchen, I don’t think there is anything to
breakable in there,” Suigetsu mumbled as he went back to staring at the board,
still determined to win even though it was clear to him he was way out of his
depth when it came to the Nara.
Shikamaru
blinked, “Ino is here, isn’t she supposed to be with Naruto today?”
Sakura
nodded, “she made him promise not to go out and if he has to, to stay to the
back streets. He said he was going to go and talk to Neji and work things out
with him so we figured he’d be pretty safe at the Hyuga compound,” Sakura
shuffled a little, “he also said that he wasn’t quite ready to see Sasuke yet.”
“But you
said Neji was coming here today after his mission,” Sasuke mumbled, glancing at
the pink haired konoichi with confusion, “that means if he wants to see Neji
he’ll have to see me.”
“Exactly,”
Sakura nodded before looking at the various stunned looks on the faces of the
other occupants of the room, “what? Hey, I can be devious sometimes too!”
“I’ve
been meaning to ask you about something Sakura,” Sasuke said distracting her
form her defence of her character, “why is Naruto never left alone? Did
something happen.”
Sakura
bit her lip as she nodded and even Shikamaru looked away, “it was a just over a
week after he got his tale and ears. Some people in the village attacked him.”
“It’s
not as bad as it was anymore so you shouldn’t be too concerned,” Shikamaru said
as he moved his own piece, “especially not since Agito Miyomo showed up dead. Besides,
as you can see we’re handling it”
“Who is
Agito Miyomo?”
“He's
the guy who broke the cartilage in Naruto’s right ear and left it permanently
bent,” Sakura explained, “the Hokage questioned Neji straight away since he was
there straight after Naruto got attacked and there was evidence that Miyomo’s
chakra system had been badly disrupted but he was on a mission when it
happened.”
“But according
to the research I did there are a few subtle Gentle Fist techniques that aren’t
as instantaneous as, say the eight trigrams for instance,” Shikamaru mumbled as
he nodded to Suigetsu to let him know that his move was okay before reconsidering
and taking the shark boy’s piece with one of his own.
“And who
says I even know them,” all eyes turned to the veranda where an annoyed Neji
Hyuga stood with his ANBU mask handing around his neck, “we’ve already
discussed this, Naruto wouldn’t file a report against him and I couldn’t just
let him get away with it.”
“So you
killed him,” Sasuke mused, “I understand, I would have done the same thing to…a
long time ago.”
Neji
narrowed his pale eyes at the Uchiha but said nothing. He believed what he had
said and didn’t think it was so bad to maybe have at least one person on his
side about this, even if it was someone as undesirable as Sasuke.
“It
doesn’t matter now anyway,” said Shikamaru in an attempt to ease the tense
atmosphere, “the Hokage and the new council cleared him of any wrong doing so
this whole conversation is a moot point and really not worth the effort.”
Neji
gave a slight nod of his head at Shikamaru’s observation before reaching down
and moving a piece for Suigetsu and smirking at him, “you are going to lose
regardless, but you don’t have to make it easy for him.”
“hey am
I the one playing here or what,” Suigetsu threw up his hand in exasperation,
“every move I’ve made, Mr. genius over here has moved back and now Mr. appear
from nowhere, appears from nowhere, criticizes me and moves my pieces too,” the
shark boy stood and stormed over to the door, “I'm going to go and help Ino in
the kitchen, maybe she’ll be nice to me!”
“If Ino
and Naruto are here than I should go,” Neji sighed, “I still don’t think he’s
ready to talk to me yet or he would have come to see me by now. I don’t think
he will appreciate me showing up here even if I was invited to come.”
Sakura
gave the Hyuga a warm smile, she had had front row seats to the spectacle going
on between Naruto and Neji since it all started so she knew where the pale eyed
raven stood on the matter. He didn’t think he had done the wrong thing by
telling Tsunade the truth but he didn’t want to push the blonde into seeing his
side of the matter either. So he had left Naruto alone, letting him decide when
this little tiff would end between them and even though it had annoyed the
Hyuga to do so and leave others with the duty of the Jinchuriki’s protection he
had given his friend what he wanted.
“I don’t
really think you need to worry so much about that anymore Neji,” she said as
she looked at the clock Sasuke had set up on the wall, “according to Ino, right
about now he’s probably waiting at the Hyuga compound right now to see you, or
is at least headed there.”
“Ino
left him alone?” Neji’s hands clenched into fists at his sides, “she knows how
dangerous that can be!”
“Relax
Neji, there hasn’t been an attack since we started guarding him in public and
after you…well after that incident,” Sakura said, trying a appease the Hyuga prodigy
for the sake of her blonde rival and sometimes friend, “I really think he will
be okay on his own for a little while, the people that attacked him weren’t
exactly the best of citizens and there are plenty of other ninja around Konoha
that will stick up for Naruto. We can’t condemn and entire village just because
of a few bad eggs, Naruto has friend and it’s only those that don’t know him
that are acting like idiots about this whole situation.”
“You
might be right Sakura but I don’t think I’m going to take that chance just yet,”
the Hyuga said as he put his mask back on and stepped outside, “bad things tend
to happen when people drop their guard and lower their defences. Tell Ino not
to worry about checking up on Naruto later, I’ll take him home myself,” and
with that and a few hand signs the raven was gone in a puff of smoke.
“How do
you think it will turn out, do you think they’ll start talking again?” Everyone turned to see Ino standing in the
doorway with Suigetsu close behind her carrying a big old cardboard box.
“They’ll be fine,” Shikamaru said as he reset
the shogi board, preparing to play himself and get a really challenge, “even if
they don’t work it out now they will eventually. Naruto holds all the cards in
this but his moves are clear. Naruto has never given up on anyone before and
since Neji is one of the few people who have ever come to his rescue which
means whatever they have Naruto will fight to protect it even more. It’s just a
matter of when he’s ready.”
Shikamaru
looked up from the board and stared at Sasuke, “the same thing applies to you
Sasuke, Naruto will never give up on you and he’ll come to you to sort things
out eventually. It’s only a matter of when and how much of your relationship
can be repaired when he does.”
Sasuke nodded to Shikamaru, accepting his
advice but all he could think about at the moment was what Sakura had said, that they couldn’t condemn the entire
village just because of a few bad eggs. That was what she had said and the
Uchiha couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like if there had have
been someone like her around to defend his clan when they had needed it. Would
anything have been different, would they have spared the innocents of the clan
and only condemned the bad eggs as
Sakura had said.
He knew
he should have bothered with wondering about such things, he was trying to move
on from the past and thinking about it did nothing to change it anyway. Still
it was there, and Sasuke couldn’t deny that many things triggered his thoughts
about what could have been and what was.
It made
him wounder that if in some alternate universe where the past was different
sound he have been happy and if, with all the dark thoughts haunting his mind,
did he have a chance to be happy here and now with what he had to work with.
Sasuke sighed
as he went back to work, trying to pay attention to the world and the people
around him and not the world in his head. Those questions about happiness were
something that only time and patients could answer.

“W-would
you like some…some tea while y-you wait N-Naruto?” Hinata asked shyly as she
sat in one of the rooms of the Hyuga compound with Naruto, keeping him company
until her cousin returned from his mission.
Naruto
smiled at the already blushing girl, causing her to turn an even darker shade
of red, “No thanks Hinata, I don’t want you to have to go to any trouble for
me, especially not since your dad doesn’t really like me being here and all,”
Naruto hid his annoyance at that little fact with an even bigger smile,
“besides Neji should be here soon right?”
“Yes his
mission should have finished a little while ago unless he ran into some
problems,” Hinata bit her lip at the thought of her cousin running into trouble
on his mission. They may not have the best of relationships but she would never
want any harm to come to him, the young man she called her brother, “can I ask
you something Naruto?”
Naruto nodded,
giving the shy girl the all clear to fire away with her question. He was curious
as to what she wanted to know since she hadn’t stuttered at all while asking
him. That was only an occurrence he saw when they were on missions together and
had more important things to concentrate on other than talking.
“You are
going to forgive him aren’t you, Neji I mean,” Hinata asked, “I'm not trying to
pressure you into anything by asking you this, it’s just that ever since the
two of you stopped talking all he does is mope around the compound when he isn’t
on missions or training and I'm a little worried.”
“I know
that you’re annoyed by what he did but I just think you should know how much he
cares about you. Every time it’s my turn to watch over you he always makes sure
that I'm going to watch you well and not let you slip away. Then whenever I
return to the compound he’s full of questions, all of them about you and how
you are. My cousin doesn’t always know how to show people what they mean to him
but you really do mean a lot to him Naruto, more than he’ll ever admit to
anyway. I just though you should know.”
“You don’t
have to be worried Hinata,” Naruto said with a little smile that was laced with
guilt over what he had just heard, “I was angry about what Neji did, that he
told Tsunade he truth about what happened in the street that day even though I asked
I'm not too but everyone has helped me realise that I was being stupid. I know that
that he only did what he did to protect me and to keep things like that from
ever happening again.”
“I owe
him more than being angry at him when all he was trying to do was help, I know
that now. I just needed sometime to cool off was all,” the blonde scratched at
the back of his neck with a sheepish grin, “so the real question here is
whether he’ll forgive me, not whether I'm forgiving him,” he looked at Hinata
through a curtain of blonde locks that had fallen into his eyes, hoping that
she could ease some of his worries about the outcome of being here, “Do you think
he will?”
Hinata’s
large pale eyes shifted to look over Naruto’s shoulder and she found herself
smiling as she spoke and prepared to leave, “why don’t you ask him yourself?”
Blue
eyes widened and Naruto spun on the cushion he was sitting on, on the floor to
see Neji standing in the door way behind him, his ANBU mask down and just a
hint of a smile on his face, “how long have you been standing there,” Naruto said
as he gulped at the thought of what the Hyuga prodigy may or may not have
heard.
Neji did
smile then but it was soft, not mocking the blonde in any way for failing to
notice his presence before it was too late, “long enough.”
Naruto looked
away and fiddled with his jacket, playing with the zippers on the black cloth
was becoming a nervous habit for him that he was finding hard to break, “Neji I'm
really sor-”
“You don’t
have to say anything Naruto,” the Hyuga cut him off as he walked into the room,
“I don’t need and apology from you, I just need you to acknowledge the fact
that I exist again and let me help to protect you as was my intention when this
whole mess between us started,” he held out his hand to the blonde in an offer
to help him to his feet but there was an underlying meaning to it that even Naruto,
as dense as he was, couldn’t miss. It was an olive branch, “can you do that for
me?”
It took
the younger shinobi all of a second to consider Neji’s question before he took
the offered hand and allowed himself to be pulled to his feet, “of course I can!”
Neji squeezed
Naruto’s hand in his own for a moment before releasing him, “I have to shower
and change first but what do you say to you and me grabbing something to eat
together? With as hyperactive as Sakura has been telling me you’ve been lately I’m
sure I have a lot to catch up on.”
“Hey Tsunade
has been giving me really easy missions lately, a guy’s got to do something to
burn of the extra energy!”
“Challenging
Choji to an eating contest is burning off energy?” Neji inquired as he quirked
an eyebrow.
Naruto grinned,
“okay well I admit that was just a bit of fun but I’ve also been challenging
Lee as well. We’ve been having all sorts of contests lately and I'm determined
to beat him. When it comes to stamina he is my greatest rival!”
“You
sound like Gai and Kakashi when you say that,” the raven pointed out, “oh well,
you can tell me all about them over some ramen but first I need a shower.”
Naruto nodded
and then turned around, ready to invite Hinata to lunch with them and blinked
owlishly when he realised that the room was empty. That meant that if Neji left
to shower he would be alone in the compound.
“Hey do
you mind if I wait for you outside the compound, “Naruto asked as he turned
back to the older teen, “your uncle was angry enough that I was here with Hinata
to watch me, I don’t think he’ll like it if I'm here alone. Probably thinks I might
infect something.”
Neji narrowed
his eyes in anger as he saw how much it hurt the blonde before him to say that.
He was much better at controlling his temper these days when it came to his
uncle but he hadn’t felt this much anger toward the man since he was very young
and it shocked him enough to bring him back to the blonde who was waiting for
an answer.
“I’d
prefer it if you stayed in the compound, believe it or not you are safe here
but if you feel too uncomfortable I suppose it’s alright if you wait outside,”
the Hyuga conceded, “just make sure to stay where someone can see you.”
Naruto nodded
and promised he would stay close to the compound where people, hopefully good
ones could see him before taking off in a direction that would lead him out of
the small Hyuga district. Neji watched him go and once the blonde was out of
sight he held up his hand that was still tingling and warm from where it had
held Naruto’s.
Neji
would never push Naruto into making a decision he didn’t want to; he would give
him time and let the blonde sort things out on his own, always let him come to
him when he was ready. That practice however, was becoming a lot harder than
the Hyuga would have liked to admit and how could Naruto ever be ready if he
didn’t even know how Neji truly felt.

A/N:
Just to clarify this is still a NaruSasu fiction at its heart, do not be afraid
of the NejiNaru element arising.
Here are
some review responses. Ready, set, go!
Moodysavage: It took me forever to figure out
how to describe Sasuke in scent form so I'm glad you liked it. Your comment
about what to do when it comes to people giving me slack about my spelling and
such also made laugh and feel a lot better.
Althydia: there is a reason for Naruto’s
bullying, just wait and see. Also as for your comment about keeping events from
cannon, I don’t know what cannon is. People talk about it all the time on this
site but I'm just to ignorant to look it up on the net and when it comes to Shippuden
episodes I’ve only seen up to where Shikamaru awesomely avenges Asuma. Most of
my other information for this fiction as to what happens after all that comes from
Wikipedia so I haven’t even seen Naruto fight Pein yet. I don’t want to be too
harsh since you’ve given me some nice reviews in the past and I appreciate that
but I thought the fact that Naruto has a tail and ears in this fiction would
have led you and everyone else to the realisation that you cannot expect this
to follow most aspects of the Naruto storyline, even the most basic ones like
the attitude of people toward him. Okay?
Dyn: All I can say is that your review
made me smile. A lot.
