Naruto was laughing while Sasuke just smiled as they left the theater. It felt good to actually get out and do something that wasn’t kid related. And it was nice to see an adult movie as well. The blond was tired of all the animated movies that Konohamaru made him watch. The kid sure knew how to guilt trip Naruto. “So where do you want to get lunch at moron?” Sasuke asked as they stepped into the mall. Naruto tilted his head and began to think of all the restaurants that were located in the mall. “How about Chinese?” Sasuke nodded his head and followed the blond to the Chinese restaurant. It only took about five minutes to walk the small distance from the theater to the food court. Naruto was happy that the food court was close to the theater. “So, how are things with dog breath?” Naruto asked as they weaved through the crowd. “I don’t know. He’s being sneaky about something.” Sasuke answered in a growl. Naruto raised a blond eyebrow. “Really? I’m surprised he’s keeping whatever he’s doing to himself.” Sasuke snorted. “He’s been hanging out with Hinata Hyuuga a lot lately. She’s been at our place nearly every day this week. And when I enter the apartment they’re silent, like they’re up to something.” Naruto shrugged and pushed his hands into his pockets. “Maybe you’re just reading way too much into it. Remember back in the seventh grade when I burst into laughter every time you walked by me and you thought it was because I was making fun of you?” “Yeah, what about it moron?” Sasuke shot back. “Well it wasn’t you I was laughing at. It was how Sakura was following you around like a lost little puppy. You wouldn’t talk to me for weeks because you didn’t let me explain things. Give Kiba some time to see what he’s planning and if you feel that it’s something that will endanger your relationship, then talk to him about it.” Naruto replied from experience. “When did you get smart?” Sasuke joked. “After Neji Hyuuga. Just don’t bottle it up Sasuke. It will hurt your relationship in the long run.” Naruto said sagely. “Fine moron. If Kiba doesn’t straighten up I’ll talk to him.” Sasuke promised. “Good, ah there’s the Chinese place!” Naruto exclaimed happily. The blond grabbed his best friends arm and dragged Sasuke the rest of the way to the Chinese restaurant. Naruto was waited on quickly and he was fast to get his order out. He wasn’t picky when it came to food. When Naruto paid for his food, he tapped his foot in annoyance as he waited for close to five minutes for Sasuke to pick just one entrée. The blond got tired of waiting for Sasuke and found a table to sit at. He dug into his food and sent a furious blue glance at his best friend. Five minutes later Sasuke joined Naruto. The blond had already finished his food. “You are such a pig, moron.” “No I’m not, I’m a growing man.” Naruto retorted. “Yeah right. You stopped growing at twenty-one. You just like to pig out.” Sasuke shot back. “It’s this new diet Tsunade gave me for Konohamaru. He won’t eat any of the food I make unless I eat it as well. And I can’t stand to eat too much of it. It’s sooo gross.” Naruto whined. “Moron, you knew what it would be like when you took the kid in. Besides, you need to be healthy too. I’m sure your body will thank you for not eating that crap you call ramen.” Naruto let a fake hurt look pass over his face. “You dare insult my ramen sir! En garde!” The blond picked up a chopstick and thrust it towards Sasuke. Sasuke only raised an eyebrow at the childish act. “You need to grow up.” “But where’s the fun in that?” Naruto asked as he threw the chopstick back into the Styrofoam container. “You’re a care giver now Naruto and there may be someone who will show up one day to try and take Konohamaru away from you. I’m not trying to be mean, just trying to help.” Naruto sighed. “Yeah I know. I still owe you one for the job.” Sasuke waved his hand. “You don’t owe me anything. I was going on a gamble anyway. Itachi rarely keeps assistants for more than a week. You’ve lasted almost four. I’m impressed.” “You mean you sent me in there knowing that I might not make it!?” Naruto exclaimed loudly, moving slightly out of his seat. Sasuke snorted. “Of course. It amused me more that you got along with my brother instantly than what you did with me.” Naruto crossed his arms. “Whatever.” He huffed. “Naruto, I’m glad you were successful with Itachi. I would have supported you and Konohamaru until you had a job.” Sasuke answered as he pushed the blond back into his seat. “No, because I wouldn’t have allowed you to help me and you know it. I’m not a charity case Sasuke.” Sasuke huffed. “I know, but Naruto, everyone needs help sometimes. I trust that you will ask if you ever find yourself in a situation that you can’t get out of, especially now that Konohamaru is part of your life.” Naruto just glared at Sasuke. He didn’t want to promise Sasuke to ask for help. The blond never wanted to rely on another person for money, especially someone as well off as Sasuke. He knew the Uchihas were always in the news and Naruto didn’t want to be dragged into that kind of publicity. “Fine.” Sasuke let out a breath he’d been holding. “Thanks moron. I know how hard that was for you. But it’s to preserve my sanity.” Naruto smiled weakly. “I know you worry about me Sasuke, but really we’re fine. The apartment is great and no one hates us. The neighbors are really nice and plus I think the woman downstairs has a crush on me.” Sasuke raised an eyebrow. “Moron, you think anything with legs has a crush on you.” Naruto laughed. “I’m not that bad. Can you talk Itachi into meeting with Neji in person? I hate that I’m the reason they have to conference call.” Sasuke blinked. “Wait, you mean to tell me that Itachi won’t meet with Neji Hyuuga.” “Yeah. I didn’t tell you the whole story because Konohamaru was with me. But Neji wouldn’t leave me alone. He kept trying to talk to me and then pulled me back into his office. He was begging me to talk to him, but I told him that there was nothing left to talk about. That’s when Itachi in. He said he didn’t want to endanger a member of his staff.” Naruto explained as he closed his container. Sasuke snorted. “I thought Hyuuga knew better than to talk to you. But at least you’re safer with the conference calls. I don’t want to end up in jail again.” Naruto laughed. “I still have that video on my phone from Kiba.” “You still have that?” Sasuke asked as he held his hand out for the blond’s cell phone. Naruto chuckled as he took his cell out and handed it over. Sasuke had seen the video numerous times and it never got old. He searched through the blond’s phone until he found the video where Sasuke had punched Neji when he tried to approach Naruto at a campus activity. The Uchiha had gotten chewed out for that stunt by his father, but to him it had been worth it. Neji had stopped stalking Naruto after that. “You’ll find someone Naruto.” Sasuke said as he shut the phone and handed it back to Naruto. Naruto shrugged his shoulders. “I don’t think I want to focus on that right now. I have my hands full with Konohamaru and besides…no one wants to date someone who has a kid. Especially since it’s not my kid.” “Where is the positive moron I met back in elementary school?” Sasuke asked. Naruto snorted. “He’s taking a vacation right now. But seriously, I really don’t want the stress of a relationship right now. Working for your brother is demanding and I don’t think that any partner would appreciate that. I’m barely getting any time with Konohamaru as it is, not that I’m complaining. But adding a boyfriend into the mix might be a bit much.” Sasuke’s eyes softened. “I just want you to be happy again Naruto. It’s been a long time since you were truly happy.” Naruto smiled faintly. “I know, but I like where I’m at right now with Konohamaru being the only complication in my personal life.” Sasuke huffed. “Fine, but once you feel more comfortable I want you to promise me that you will look start going on dates, even if it won’t amount to anything serious.” Naruto rolled his blue eyes, “Of course Sasuke. I promise.” Sasuke grinned. “Good, now let’s get back before Kiba thinks we eloped.” The blond looked at Sasuke puzzled. “Say what?” “Don’t ask me. He was mumbling that in his sleep the other night.” Sasuke answered as he shrugged his shoulders. ~-~ Naruto glared at the stack of paper work. He knew just glaring at the work wouldn’t get it done, but he was sure his brain needed a break and that wasn’t going to happen any time soon. Something had gone wrong with one of the contracts with a small company and Itachi was trying to fix it. But the problem came in the form that the contract was made with his last assistant and the person had royally messed up the paper work. Naruto was about to throw the paper in his hand into the other pile that he had scoured when a sentence caught his eye. His blue eyes went wide and he jumped out of his chair. He marched over to Itachi’s desk and slammed the paper down on the desk. “Did you not read this contract after the assistant drew it up?” Naruto growled. Itachi looked away from his computer screen and gave the blond an indifferent look. “What do you mean?” Naruto sighed. “It’s no wonder you’re having issues with this guy. When your assistant drew this up, it looks like they added an extra clause that basically states that if your assistant was not with Uchiha Corp then this contract was null and that it would go to the assistants’ current employer.” “Let me see.” Itachi reached a pale hand out and Naruto placed the paper in it. He made contact with the Uchiha’s skin and all the blond could think was that the skin was as soft as it looked. The blond stepped back as Itachi scoured over the paragraph quickly, raising an eyebrow as he read on. Naruto shifted from foot to foot, not sure what his boss was thinking at that moment. He knew what Sasuke was like when he was angry, but Itachi was new territory. If the other was angry, Naruto had no idea on how to calm him if he went into a rage. “I see,” was all that Itachi said. His voice was cold as ice and Naruto shivered despite it being warm in the room. “I’m going to have to call Neji over. Would you mind going and getting us lunch while he’s here? I should be done by the time you get back.” Naruto knew what Itachi was doing and was grateful for it instead of angry. “What do you want?” Itachi thought a moment before answering. “Just bring me some dango. I had a large breakfast with my mother this morning.” Naruto nodded and returned to his desk to grab his jacket. He always kept his wallet in the pocket of his jacket. He hated the feel of his wallet in the back pants pocket of his suit. He pulled his jacket on and made his way out of the office, listening to Itachi talking to Neji over the phone. Naruto smiled at his fellow colleagues as he made his way down the building. It took awhile for some of the employees to get used to Naruto’s sunny personality. But he had even the most hardened employee saying ‘hello’ whenever they saw the blond. Naruto made sure to take it slow through the crowd on the sidewalk. He knew that it would take quite awhile for Neji and Itachi to work out the problem with the contract. The blond was just glad that he didn’t have to kill his brain going through it like they were. Of course, what was coming off would need lawyer interference. And Naruto wasn’t qualified for that. The sun was warm for October and Naruto loved it. His birthday was this weekend and he had no plans on celebrating it. He wanted to take Konohamaru out to the zoo before the weather got too cold to do anything outside. He had told his friends that there would be no parties for his birthday. They had protested, but the blond was stern. He didn’t want to give the state a reason to take his ward away. He wouldn’t fail Konohamaru like Kyuubi did him. Naruto looked up at the little restaurant that was nestled between two bigger stores. He knew that Itachi had been in there numerous times, but the blond had never entered before today. He was curious about what it was like as he stepped into the small shop. It was quaint and had the right amount of decoration. Naruto liked it immediately. He would have to bring Konohamaru here some time for lunch. He went up to the counter and placed the order quickly, making sure to get it to go. Itachi had assured him that he would be done with Neji before the blond got back. Naruto waited patiently by the register for the order of food by examining everything around him. He was always fascinated by people watching since he was never a part of anything when he was younger. He wanted to know how normal people worked since he was always called a freak and other such names when he was a small kid. He tried to mimic the actions of those he watched, but that proved to be disastrous on several occasions. “Your order sir.” Naruto turned around, thanked the man and paid for the food. He grabbed the bag and left the small shop. He would definitely visit again. He whistled lightly as he walked up the street at a slow pace. He wanted to enjoy the sun as much as he could since he knew he would not be leaving the office until late that night. Naruto peeked around constantly inside the Uchiha Corp building looking for any signs of Neji. He could only hope that the Hyuuga was gone. The blond had taken about thirty minutes to get the food but he knew how the hours could drag when a legal matter appeared out of no where. Naruto smiled as he passed the secretary, Karin, and stopped in front of the door to the office. He raised his hand to knock, but hesitated. He really didn’t want a confrontation with Neji to ruin his good mood. He gathered his courage and knocked on the door twice. “Come in Naruto.” The blond could hear a bit of amusement in Itachi’s voice. Naruto opened the doors and went in. He was relieved when he saw that Neji was no where in sight. He held the bag up in his hand and both men moved to the small table that Itachi kept in the big office. There were already two cups of water waiting for them. The blond set the food down and took his jacket off. He then sat down and separated their food out. Naruto began to happily eat his food, glad that he was able to finally get something on his stomach. He didn’t have breakfast that morning because Konohamaru had been particularly hard to get out of bed to go to his second day of school. The first day had been rough on the kid and Naruto had listened to two hours of whining. “How are things with your ward?” Itachi’s voice broke through Naruto’s head. The blond blinked for a moment before the question registered. “He’s doing as well as can be expected. His first day of school was yesterday and it was hard on him. It was hard getting him out of bed today.” “Ah, I suppose that can be expected. Are you sure you really want to stay with me with the hours I keep when you have a kid to take care of?” Itachi probed. “Yes I’m sure. I want to give Konohamaru the best life that I can. I owe that much to his parents. I don’t mind keeping the hours because I have the weekends to spend time with him.” Naruto answered honestly. “Ah. I don’t want to monopolize your time. Maybe I should hire a second assistant so you can have free nights.” Itachi suggested. “There’s no need for that! I’m fine with the arrangement Mr. Uchiha. I promise. I wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t.” Itachi raised an eyebrow at the comment. “Sasuke did say that you didn’t do anything that doesn’t sit well with you. He also assured me that you would speak up when something bothered you.” “Yeah, I do. It’s because of how I grew up and how people danced around me and wouldn’t tell me anything. I learned to be honest because of them.” “And you were able to keep that honesty into adulthood?” Itachi asked intrigued. “Yeah, I made a promise to myself and another orphan, Gaara, that I would never become like the fake people I saw everyday. I knew what they were seeing when they saw me and then they tried to cover it up with fake smiles. I saw right through them and stayed away from most of the adults.” Naruto shrugged as he took a bite of his food. “Most children don’t keep promises like that to themselves. I won’t lie, that’s fascinating to me. I remember all of the promises I made to myself as a child and I have never kept a single one of them.” Itachi answered as he picked up his dango from his box. “Most people don’t, it’s nothing new. Someone wanted me to write my life story down, but I refused. I don’t want everyone thinking of me as a second Kyuubi Uzumaki. I want to change my name so bad, but it never happens when I do the paper. I gave up on that. That is the one promise I broke to myself. I had promised myself I would be rid of that cursed last name.” Naruto’s face was forlorn and his blue eyes were troubled. “It’s not your fault for what that man did Naruto. You were only what, four? Five? You had no idea what he was up to.” Naruto smiled weakly. “Thanks. It’s nice to hear those words now and again.”
