~~~ Naruto couldn’t bring himself to enter through the rather large doors. They loomed over him like they were welcoming him to the afterlife. And he really didn’t want to know what kind of afterlife he would have at that moment. He took a step back, ready to flee, when a hand stopped him. “I’m right beside you Naruto.” Sasuke whispered next to his ear. The blond only turned his head and blinked at the other vampire. “Will they really execute me?” Naruto’s voice was so low that Sasuke had trouble catching it. “That is something I cannot predict. Just be truthful when answering their questions. They will respect you more for being honest. I know you’re tired from the flight and didn’t rest well on the plane, but all we have to do is get through this hearing, then we can retire to my room.” Sasuke said as he approached the door, his arm still firmly planted on Naruto’s back. The blond didn’t say anything as the doors were opened for them and they were announced to whoever was inside the room. Naruto had been in awe of the Uchiha mansion ever since he had arrived. When he asked about it, the older vampire didn’t answer him. It seemed as though he didn’t want to talk about his family. So Naruto left him alone about it after Sasuke remained with a scowl on his face for the rest of the night. Naruto didn’t really focus on anything as they walked up the aisle. He was afraid to look at the individuals that would decide his fate. He didn’t want to offend them in any way. Even though he disliked his current situation, he wasn’t too sure if he wanted to die right now. But there was a stray thought that ran through his mind that said he deserved to die for killing those innocent people. He still didn’t buy the whole ‘newborns are unstable’ excuse. He didn’t want to use it; he wanted to stand accountable for his actions. When Sasuke stopped, so did Naruto. Then the older vampire bowed and introduced himself. Naruto soon then followed. Sasuke had explained this part to him when they were in the limo on the way to mansion. The blond was glad that he was able to introduce himself without embarrassing himself. “We are glad that you both made it here. We were certain that you would try to run away newborn.” The voice was smooth and Naruto glanced up and saw a pale vampire with golden eyes. “I’m here to stand accounted for my actions. I will not run from this.” Naruto stated with his voice strong. The vampire with golden eyes raised an eyebrow. “Very well, before we begin I shall introduce the council to you. I am Orochimaru; to my left are Jiraiya and Tsunade. Now we shall being young one.” Naruto pushed the feeling of dread down deep into him as he examined the two other vampires. The male vampire had long white hair and two red line tattoos that ran down his face. Naruto could sense that he was the laid back sort, but could do serious damage if needed. The woman had blond hair and she seemed strict. But Naruto knew not to go on appearances alone. “Our first question is directed at Sasuke, why did you create a newborn without our permission?” Orochimaru asked as he leaned forward, linking his fingers and placing his hands together, and placed his chin on them. “I didn’t create him sir. I’m afraid that my brother was the one who did. I’m only taking responsibility because it would be dishonorable to our clan to leave the newborn on his own and expose us.” Sasuke answered swiftly. “Really? Your brother created him? Interesting, Itachi has never created a newborn before. What makes this blond so special I wonder?” Tsunade pondered aloud. “I don’t think he was special Elder Tsunade. I think it was by accident that he was created and my brother abandoned him to fend for himself.” “Be that as it may, it’s damn near impossible to track your brother down and ask for explanations. You shall not be punished in his place for this crime. When he does show up eventually, we shall administer our punishment. You are not to tell him of this decree, do you understand?” Orochimaru asked as he pinned Sasuke with a dark stare. “Yes sir. I will do you as you say.” Sasuke was quick to respond. Any hesitation would have marked him as lying and he would have been punished. “Now onto the brat.” Tsunade growled. “Do you have any idea what trouble you caused with that stunt at the club?” “Yes old hag I do.” Naruto answered quickly. Then groaned as he realized what had slipped out of his mouth. Jiraiya started to laugh, the sound filling the stunned, silent room. “Don’t kill him Tsunade, the kid was only telling the truth.” The blond turned and clocked the white haired vampire in the face. Her eyebrow twitching. “You will apologize for that brat.” “I’m sorry! It won’t happen again!” Naruto pleaded. The woman was scary and the blond certainly didn’t want to be on her bad side. “Let’s get back to business shall we? Now Naruto, when you went to the club when was the last time you had fed?” Orochimaru asked as the fighting settled down beside him. “Ummm…I’m didn’t feed at all. I didn’t know how and I was created the night before. I could tell something was wrong as we entered the club, but I thought that was only my reaction to the thought of drinking someone’s blood. It disgusted me that I would have to feed off of other people just to survive. I ignored it the best I could. Then Sasuke explained to me how to feed, so I went to the dance and found a partner to dance with. I drank some of his blood and I can’t remember what happened next. I woke up the next morning in Sasuke’s place. And it was torn to pieces…it was then that I knew I did something terrible.” Naruto explained as he tried to push the nervousness out of him. He didn’t want to remember tearing people apart and it seemed that his brain wouldn’t allow him to. That is, if his brain functioned at all. He would have to ask Sasuke about that one. “It seems as though you are telling the truth young one. You will be under surveillance for the duration of a year. One wrong move out of you and you will be executed. We will not be exposed because a newborn cannot control his urges and does not feed properly. Sasuke Uchiha, you are responsible for him. If he steps out of line, then you are to be punished as well. You will be confined to the coffin for a century. Our existence is based on secrecy and I will not have it exposed because of you two, understand?” Orochimaru said as he stared intently at the two vampires. “Yes sir, we understand completely.” Sasuke answered respectfully as he bowed. He tugged on Naruto’s shirt to get the blond to follow his example. Naruto shook his head and did as Sasuke had. The two vampires straightened and left the room. They did not dare to talk about what happened until they were safely out of the Elders’ range of hearing. Naruto followed Sasuke out of the large hearing room and back to the main reception hall. The blond was in awe of the place. It was certainly as big as his old apartment building. He wanted to know more about the Uchiha clan, but knew better than to ask Sasuke about it. It seemed that the older vampire would never discuss it with him. And Naruto wouldn’t press him about it. The feeling of being free for the moment soared through Naruto at that moment. He would live to see a few more nights. He was sure that he would mess up again and that he would certainly be executed next time. But until then, he would enjoy what he could out of this existence. He just hoped that he would never take a life again. The blond knew he had to make sure that he fed every day. He was a newborn and required a lot of blood for his body to adjust to the new changes. That was how Sasuke explained it to him on the plane ride here, at least when they were awake that is. Naruto stared at the winding staircase that led to the second floor. The wooden bars were etched with carvings that seemed to go on forever. It seemed as though they were telling a story and Naruto couldn’t help but wonder what story they were trying to tell. “Moron, get away from those! We have to get changed and then I have some business to take care of.” Sasuke growled out as the blond was about to caress one of the carvings. Naruto snapped his hand away from the bar and continued to follow the older vampire up the staircase. He knew then that he would never decipher the story the staircase was telling and he felt sad that realization. He loved stories and this was sure to have been a good one. But he didn’t want to get on Sasuke’s bad side. He hadn’t seen the older vampire angry and Naruto was sure that he didn’t want to see it. The blond wasn’t sure was they were going to do the rest of the night. His trial hadn’t been that long and he had already fed earlier that night. And he knew that Sasuke was hesitant to take him out into public for fear of something setting the newborn off. He didn’t want to be separated from the world he knew, but Naruto knew it was necessary and he could deal until he was ready. He just wished that he could see his friends one last time and tell them goodbye. But that wasn’t allowed by vampire law. So they would have to wonder for the rest of their lives what had happened to him. And then grief struck Naruto. He wouldn’t get to go to Sakura and Lee’s wedding. He was the best man and he wouldn’t be there to support his friend. Not only that, he wouldn’t be there for the birth of their first child. He wouldn’t get to spoil it and be a part of their lives. He wouldn’t get to see Kiba again and wrestle with the other. He wouldn’t get to see Kiba finally ask Hinata out either. And Naruto felt like he was shattered. He wouldn’t get to see any of his friends again; he wouldn’t be able to share their life experiences with them. He wouldn’t laugh, cry or rant with them ever again. They wouldn’t grow old together and terrorize a nursing home. His heart was breaking and there was nothing he could do. His life was over, but he was still stuck on earth. He wouldn’t be able to move on to whatever waited for him when he was dead. The blond stopped walking as he began to shake. Everything was taken from him because of a vampire. He didn’t know Itachi’s reasoning and Sasuke never told him what the other had said on phone that night at the club. It was then that he wondered if he could ever find peace in this kind of existence. Sure he didn’t have to kill to feed and keep going. But what if he never got over his bloodlust? Did he even have a soul anymore? And if so, would it go to Hell if he were to suffer the true death? These questions burned in his mind and yet he was afraid to ask them because he knew he would be laughed. It seemed that Sasuke was a born vampire and never had been human. So that had to count for something right? “Moron stop thinking. I can smell the smoke from here. This will be our room. I will not be letting you out of my sight for quite some time.” Sasuke said as he opened the door and ushered the blond vampire in first. The blond hadn’t realized that they had come to the room already. Naruto gaped at the room before. The room at the other mansion paled in comparison to this one. This room was twice the size and the blond couldn’t help but marvel at it. He knew the mansion had to be at least a few centuries old and to have it built like this at that time was amazing. There were two beds in the room which relieved him. He didn’t like sharing his bed with Sasuke because it made him uncomfortable. A knot would form in his stomach every time they shared a bed. “We’re going to start on your death. I think an accident on the way home should do it. We can have the plane crash that way we don’t have to provide a body. What do you think?” Sasuke asked his voice devoid of emotion. Naruto stopped walking and turned deathly still. He didn’t want to discuss that now! It wasn’t the right time and he was certain that even if the plane burned up, no one would believe he was even dead. The blond knew that this had to be done. But he didn’t want it to happen so soon. He wanted to put it off as long as possible. But he knew Sasuke wasn’t the sort to put things off. “I guess.” Naruto whispered. He could feel the blood tears beginning to form in his eyes. Sasuke crossed the distance between them and pulled the blond into his arms. “I’m sorry. I don’t understand what you’re going through since I was never mortal. But it has to be done. You can’t socialize with them anymore. We’ll be moving around from place to place now. While you can’t make new mortal friends, I know some vampires that you will more likely get along with. I’m not asking you to get over this right away. We’ll take it a day at a time okay?” Naruto only nodded into the taller vampires shoulder. He couldn’t deal with the separation of his loved ones in one night. But maybe, just maybe the pain would lessen over the years that he continued to exist. And just like that hope once again flared within him. It was okay for him to mourn right now for his mortal life and friends. And he did just that in Sasuke’s arms.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
