He should have expected it. He should have known it would happen, but even so when Kakashi took his hand, he was a little surprised. He glanced sideways at him, but the copy nin didn't look over or change expression, he just continued walking. Trying, again, to bury his nervousness, he closed his hand around the other one.
"So, um, where are we going?" Yamato asked.
Kakashi shook his head, his eye crinkling with a smile. "I'm not telling. You'll find out when we get there."
Yamato rolled his eyes. "Taking this whole date thing seriously, aren't you?"
"Why shouldn't I?" The silver head turned and his one eye met Yamato's.
The younger man shrugged, frowning. "I… really don't know. To be honest, this whole thing is relatively new to me. I've only ever been on a few dates before. ANBU doesn't leave much time for it."
Kakashi nodded. "Yeah, I'm familiar with that. I've never really dated much, either. I got fixed up a couple of times, all, no doubt, for the sole purpose of seeing under my mask." He chuckled. "Outside of that, to be frank, I've had sex with people I picked up in the bar and not even very much of that."
"Yeah." Yamato sighed. "I know all about that."
"You know about me?" Kakashi asked in surprise.
Yamato blinked and shook his head. "No, I mean, um, that's about all I've done, too."
"Ah." Kakashi said and nodded.
Yamato shrugged. "It didn't happen all that often, but I'm not a saint, either. I needed to do something. Too much of that type of frustration can cause problems on missions."
"It can, yes. I know that very well. Too easy to get distracted. It's why I did it." Kakashi said, and they fell silent. He stopped suddenly and turned to Yamato. "Are you bothered by us? That I'm male?"
Yamato blinked in confusion, then shook his head. "Hell, no. It's…you. That's all I care about," he finished a little lamely, taken aback by the question. Where the hell did that come from?
Kakashi considered him for another moment before he turned to continue walking. "Okay. Well, then." He shrugged. "That's all that matters." His hand tightened around Yamato's a bit and they walked in silence for a little while, both lost in their own thoughts.
They paused outside of a small seafood restaurant. He glanced up, once more surprised, when Kakashi opened the door for him. Yamato loved this place but it was expensive and usually required reservations.
He tried to drop Kakashi's hand when they were greeted near the door, but the copy nin wouldn't let go. "Reservation under Hatake." He told the short man behind the podium, who nodded. Yamato buried a snort. As if anyone, anywhere in the village needed to be told Kakashi's name.
He led them to a small table in a quiet corner. After Yamato took his seat on one side, Kakashi sat next to him on the cushion to his left. The greeter presented their menus, then bowed and left.
When the server came for their drink order, Yamato ordered sake, desperately needing something to calm his nerves. Kakashi was still holding his hand as they looked over the menus. The drinks were served and he paused to take a fortifying sip.
He ordered his favorite, the walnut shrimp and raised an eyebrow at Kakashi's surprised look. "What?"
"You could have ordered anything." He said.
Yamato shrugged. "It's my favorite."
"Hm," was the only reply. He put in his order for the salt-broiled saury and turned back to Yamato when the server left. "So, it's occurred to me that we've done this a little backwards."
"Oh? Done what?" Yamato asked, sipping at his sake. He was going to need a couple of these to start to calm down. His alcohol tolerance always annoyed him. He figured the First must have been able to drink like a fish.
"Dating." Kakashi said, taking a drink out of his own bottle. At Yamato's blink, he continued. "Usually, at least as far as I understand, the nervousness and awkwardness is taken care of before you get into bed with someone."
The color came back to Yamato's cheeks and he took another drink of his sake. "Right."
"But we've already been to bed, so now we've got this awkwardness because we've never really dated." Kakashi pondered his sake bottle. "So we're just going to have to go on a bunch of them until the awkwardness goes away."
"Okay," Yamato said, carefully.
"Unless, of course, you want to kiss me in the middle of the village square." Kakashi said and Yamato choked on his drink. "Well, it would be awfully hard to be awkward around other people after that."
Kakashi finally let go of Yamato's hand long enough to pound on his back. When Yamato started breathing again, he clasped it again. "I take it you'd prefer to do the dating?"
Yamato shook his head, still working on the ability to breathe. He held up one finger to buy himself a moment. Finally, when he was able to take air into his lungs, he said, "it's not really about other people. At least, to me." He tried for another deep breath and when he succeeded, he asked, "is it for you?"
"No. Not at all. So, then, Yamato, why are you so nervous?" Kakashi asked.
The server saved him by bringing another round of drinks as well as their food. Kakashi was forced to let go of Yamato's hand at this point so he could use his chopsticks and Yamato was able to breathe a little easier. The constant touch was making him want to forget about the date, forget dinner and everything else and drag the man back to the house and into the new bed.
They ate in silence for a few minutes and Yamato took the time to gather his thoughts. "I don't know why. What I told you earlier - about not dating - is part of it." He said, picking up the thread of conversation again. "I had no idea what to expect."
"I figure it's not any different than the few we've been on before with other people. Except maybe that we weren't fixed up this time," Kakashi said with a chuckle and Yamato laughed with him. He shrugged. "Really, we're just going out to dinner or whatever else we decide to do. Maybe with the added bonus of actually holding your hand," Kakashi finished with a wicked smile.
Yamato blushed, thinking again of the new bed at home. He shook his head. "I don't know why I'm nervous. I shouldn't be, you're my best friend, if you're nothing else." He stared into the bottle in his hand and upended it. "I swear the First must have had an iron constitution."
Kakashi laughed. "Probably." He signaled the server for another bottle. After she'd brought it and left, he sighed. "You know, maybe this doesn't have to be so damned complicated."
The younger man raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"Yeah. Look, we've had dinner out plenty of times. Let's just try to enjoy it and not think about it like a date." Kakashi turned back to his food and Yamato stared at him a moment. They ate in silence for a while, though thankfully, it wasn't quite as uncomfortable.
When he'd finished his shrimp, he set his chopsticks down and sighed. "I don't know what to do with you."
"What?" Kakashi raised an eyebrow. "Seems like you knew last night," he said with a grin.
Yamato's face went bright red. He downed the rest of the second bottle of sake in one long drink. After forcing himself to calm down, he said, "that's not what I meant and you know it. That part's easy."
"Yes, it does seem to be." His lips quirked in another grin under the mask. "What do you mean?"
Yamato shrugged. "I wanted you for so damned long, but…" Despite the two bottles of sake, he was still having trouble. The third bottle appeared in front of him, but he managed to keep this one to sips.
"Let me guess, now what, right?" Kakashi asked as he finished his fish. When Yamato nodded, the older man looked thoughtful. "Well, then, that's not so complicated after all."
Kakashi didn't say anything more as he took care of the bill and they headed out. "Let's stop by the bar for drinks." Kakashi said and they both turned toward the ninja bar.
Yamato wanted to know what wasn't complicated, but he didn't push. He was still not sure he knew, himself, what he wanted. He took a deep breath and took Kakashi's hand in his own. He glanced at the copy nin when he looked over at him, but neither said anything.
But when they were standing in front of the bar, he took another deep breath before heading in the door, hand still clasped to Kakashi's, neither willing to let go. This was tantamount to declaring that the man belonged to him. He wondered if Kakashi thought about that.
It was fairly crowded that night. They saw Iruka by himself near the end of the bar, a few couples at the tables, but it looked like it was mostly teams. Gai and Tenten were sitting at a table with Neji and Hinata. Shikamaru was talking to Temari in another booth. Anko was at a large round table with a number of chunnin, playing cards out, and Yamato had a feeling every one of those guys was going to leave with a lighter wallet that night.
They took stools at the end of the bar and signaled to Aio for drinks. After they'd each taken a few sips, Kakashi turned to him again. "So, I think I've figured out that one of the problems is that neither of us knows what the other wants."
Yamato nodded. His fourth bottle was finally having an effect on him. "I'm not too sure I know what I want, frankly. Besides you, that is."
Kakashi chuckled. "You get that, pretty much any time you want."
The sake was definitely taking hold. He didn't even blush. "Yeah," he said and paused, screwing up his courage. "Do I?"
Kakashi stared at him. "Ahh." He finished his own drink and raised his hand for another. "Well, hell."
Yamato raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Kakashi chuckled. "I've been wondering the same damned thing."
Yamato shook his head. "Well, hell."
"I already said that." Kakashi said with a laugh. "So," he turned his stool toward Yamato, then paused, chuckling. As the brown eyebrow went up again, he said, "seems fitting this should happen here." He took another sip of his drink and looked down at their clasped hands. "Why are we dancing around each other, Yamato? There's no one else I want to be with."
Yamato just stared at him, blinking. Was he saying…?
"What about you?" Kakashi asked.
Yamato shook his head. "I told you three months ago. I haven't wanted anyone else in years. I still don't."
"Then why are we bothering with this?" Kakashi asked, then leaned forward and there in front of the whole bar, he kissed him.
His eyes closed and, even through the mask, the kiss went through him. The bar faded to nothingness and the only thing he knew was Kakashi. His free hand came up and cupped the other man's head, holding him close. He nibbled at the lips through the mask, wishing he could pull it down. But that wasn't his place, lover or not.
When they separated, both became aware that the bar was much quieter than it had been a moment ago. When they looked around, a few whistles went up, then a lot cheers. Kakashi's eye crinkled as he grinned but, despite four bottles of sake, Yamato's face went bright red.
Kakashi pulled Yamato up against him and he buried his red face in the other man's neck, hiding the blush. "Thank you , thank you!" Kakashi waved. "Just in case that wasn't clear, he's mine now." This was answered by more cheering.
"I'm going to kill you. I am never going to be able to face these people again." Yamato muttered to Kakashi's neck.
Kakashi laughed, tightening his arms around the other man. "They're just happy for us."
"Right. They won't dare to taunt you about it. I'm the one that gets stuck turning in mission reports, remember?" He sighed and sat up, rubbing his hand over his face in an attempt to dispel some of the blush.
"On the house. Congrats." Aio said with a grin, delivering another round.
"Thanks, but we…" Yamato started, but Kakashi cut him off.
"Appreciate it." Kakashi finished. Aio waved and moved back down the bar to take care of the other customers. Kakashi turned back to Yamato. "But we what?"
Yamato shrugged a shoulder and shook his head. "At this point, I have no clue. I'm so thoroughly confused. What did we just decide?" He took another drink.
Kakashi's eye crinkled again, then turned serious. "That I want it clear that you belong to someone. Me."
Yamato stared at him a moment. "Well, then. I guess that certainly happened." He paused and upended his bottle of bravery. "How about I do one better?" He took a deep breath. "Move in with me."
Kakashi's eyebrow went up and he stared at Yamato for a full minute. Then he smirked. "Not until we get a new bed."
Yamato laughed. "It's already there. You broke my last one, remember?"
"I did not. You broke it."
Yamato sighed. "You cracked it, then. And it was your fault I broke it."
Kakashi leaned in and whispered into his ear. "I can't help it you were so tempting," he said and finished his drink. "Well, since you have a new one, why don't we forget the rest of this date thing and go try it out?"
