Minutes ticked by, the tension in the air seemed oppressive, making it hard to breathe. Naruto sat behind the Hokage’s desk, more to put distance between himself and the other occupants of the room than any show of power or authority. Sakura sat against one wall, fidgeting with her skirt, while Sasuke was on the other side of the room, knees drawn up, elbows resting on his knees, in a sulking slouch.
Shikamaru and Neji sat together, eyeing the three sullen ninja.
“So what happened?” Shikamaru ventured, startling everyone out of their thoughts.
“Dobe over there had a thought,” Sasuke snorted, earning himself a glare and a rather crude gesture from the blonde, although he did not respond verbally.
“Naruto had a thought, and then we all had the thought,” Sakura tried to explain. “It felt like genjutsu, except we, or I, was still aware of reality, of everyone else in the room.” She blushed furiously at the thought.
“And that thought made you all… need each other?” the Nara genius was weighing his words carefully, searching for the combination that would lead him to the heart of the puzzle without getting him knocked silly by an angry kunoichi.
“Need to act on the thought,” Sakura corrected. “It felt like we didn’t have a choice. It would have happened without the barrier, with everyone still in the room if you hadn’t moved fast enough. Like your shadow capture technique – we couldn’t resist, regardless.” Sakura shrugged. “And we were all caught in it, feeling it, even if we shouldn’t.”
“Has this ever happened before?”
“Those thoughts in the field certainly weren’t mine. And I seem to recall a description of those thoughts from a certain blonde haired dobe,” Sasuke practically spat at Naruto. “I certainly didn’t ask for that!”
“You weren’t exactly arguing either, teme! In fact, I know you enjoyed it. All of it.” Naruto’s voice had gone dangerously flat.
Shikamaru and Neji exchanged nervous glances. Sure, the two feuding ninja couldn’t really hurt themselves or each other, with their healing abilities, but what of innocent people caught in the middle?
“It was mine,” Sakura sighed. “I mean, it was probably mine. Wouldn’t be the first time I’ve had those thoughts.”
“You what?!?” Both the blond and the raven ninja cried out.
Sakura just shrugged. Explaining when or why she had those thoughts was not on her agenda.
“Look, I know it is going to be awkward and embarrassing, for all of us, but you are going to have to be able to share details if you want us to be able to help.” Shikamaru rolled his eyes when both brooding ninja just set their shoulders and looked away from him and each other.
“I really don’t want to be dragged into someone else’s drama, but you haven’t left us a choice. You put us all in danger. If anyone else did what you did – stealing a forbidden jutsu, performing the forbidden jutsu repeatedly, without having the slightest clue what it might do! Did you even stop to think about how it would affect kyuubi? About the fact that you were endangering the HOKAGE and the head medical ninja? How about the fact that one wrong step could unleash the village’s three most powerful ninja AGAINST the village?”
Shikamaru was shaking, his voice trembling in anger. His normally lazy calm demeanor had snapped and he snarled his frustration at them. To their credit, the three said nothing, only sat listening, understanding dawning on them for the first time.
“The only reason ANBU hasn’t locked you up, hasn’t even officially heard about this even, is that we cannot afford to have our Hokage and our healer in jail or chakra restrictors. And Sasuke – he would be facing the death penalty – rogue ninja returns to Konoha only to seduce the Hokage and use a forbidden jutsu to threaten the Leaf – which is still rebuilding from the last fucking time he tried to destroy it. That would go over well with the citizens! And the other nations! We would look like an easy target – and with our champions in jail, we wouldn’t stand a fucking chance.” He spat the words at them and hoped like hell they understood that this wasn’t just some bedroom game that affected only the three of them.
Judging from their pale, hollow faces – they did get it.
Naruto’s eyes seemed a little less blue when he finally spoke.
“Just tell us what we have to do.” Sakura and Sasuke merely nodded. Their quick acquiescence soothed the rare flare of temper from Shikamaru.
“We’ll need details – all of them – activities, physical reactions, emotions, training details,” he paused, watching the three flush at the idea of sharing such intimate details, “and we’ll need to observe,” he finished. He saw their eyes go wide.
“You mean observe training, right?” Sakura prayed.
“That too.”
Angry growls filled the room. Sasuke and Naruto were on their feet, and would have attacked Shikamaru for the suggestion, had he not been prepared for their less than cooperative reaction. He lashed his shadow outwards, tendrils of dark slithering up and around their legs. He used every ounce of chakra he had – grateful that Sakura hadn’t joined in the attack. Still, the boys managed to keep moving, feet sliding across the wooden floor.
He had known they would react violently to the idea – he had seen how they’d moved to protect Sakura in the fields, never relaxing, even after they knew, should have known, that they weren’t a threat. Now he hissed through clenched teeth – he hadn’t expected them to be able to keep moving against him. He didn’t dare look to Sakura or Neji for help, as any loss of concentration would mean the enraged shinobi would be able to move freely.
“Observe. Not watch,” Neji stately slowly. "Like now. I am just observing. Your chakra is quite fascinating.” He spoke barely above a whisper. “Chakra flows like spider silk, a web in your body. It is a single strand of power – the more chakra you have, the thicker and more extensive the strands.”
Sasuke and Naruto stopped fighting so hard to get to Shikamaru, but they did not relax.
“Moments ago, your chakra were individual strands, impressive strands, and smaller threads wrapped loosely around them. It was not like that this morning. We need to observe your chakra and how it changes.”
Slowly Sasuke and Naruto relaxed. Shikamaru, too, relaxed, but did not retreat his shadows.
“Observe – no judgments, no interaction – just recording the facts and changes so that we can interpret them, and keep a step ahead,” Shikamaru felt them tense at the word ‘record’. “Record on paper, on a scroll, data, facts,” he reiterated.
“And if someone finds your scrolls and uses them against us?” Sakura asked quietly.
“They won’t.” Shikamaru was absolutely confident.
“Anything can be found. Orochimaru found dozens of forbidden and hidden jutsu scrolls.”
The genius sighed, and let his shadows recede.
“No sharingan,” he warned, bowing his head. Shikamaru flew through handsigns, then slammed his fist into the floor – except that it didn’t go through the floor – it passed through the shadow that had pooled at his side.
Seconds later, he withdrew his arm and was holding a scroll. The shadow pool disappeared.
“So what?” Sasuke was unimpressed.
“That is the most closely guarded secret of the Nara clan. I just broke clan law by even showing it to outsiders. Even my mother doesn’t know this technique exists. There are only a few of my clan who can perform this jutsu, and none of us has access to each other’s cache. The records will be safe.” He spoke dryly, waiting for an interruption or an argument. Sasuke looked like he would have like to argue, instead, everyone just studied him in silence.
“Good enough for me,” shrugged Sakura. “But not yet. We need to eat.” She grinned sheepishly as her stomach growled loudly, and was then echoed by both Naruto’s and Sasuke’s empty bellies. “We have to eat a lot more now. We eat soldier pills while we spar, but it seems hard to stay ahead of the curve.” He stomach growled again to reiterate her point.
"You can come shopping with us if you don’t trust us, or you can meet us at the house.” Sasuke dropped the barrier again, Naruto draped his Hokage robe across his chair, and they took off, Sakura half a step behind.
“That actually went better than expected. I really thought we’d have to convince them to let us help.” Neji raised an eyebrow at that comment. “Convince them harder,” Shikamaru conceded.
An hour later, the two sat in front of the cabin that stood in what had previously been the Uchiha complex, before Sasuke and his team had invaded Konoha and destroyed his familial home. After the attacks, Sasuke had fled again, and the council – what had been left of it – had tried to reclaim the land, but Naruto and Sakura had fought them, arguing that all of the incidents had not been his fault, or even Itachi’s. They made sure everyone knew who had unleashed kyuubi on them so many years ago, and who the real heroes and real victims were.
In the end, they had signed the land over to Naruto in the Namikaze name, the best apology he would ever get for their treatment of him.
Between missions, Naruto and Sakura had built a house on the land, nowhere near as grand as the manor which had stood there before, but a home if Sasuke had ever wanted one. They erased the scorched earth and planted new grass, new trees.
Shikamaru was relaxing in the shade of one of the new trees, watching the sky roll past when Neji spotted Sakura, Sasuke, and half a dozen Naruto’s bounding towards them, each laden with heavy bags of food.
Sakura led them all to the kitchen where she began preparing a meal even though Sasuke was chowing down on a pre-made bento box, and Naruto was making several to-go containers from Ichiraku’s disappear.
When the hard edges of hunger had been dulled, Sasuke put up the barriers again, and the three discussed everything from the beginning – from their Academy days, Team 7, their separate paths after Sasuke left – anything that might be relevant to how their relationship had progressed – and anything to avoid the real topic at hand.
When they finally got around to the more intimate details, Sakura did most of the talking, the males only really speaking when Neji asked about their chakra or Shikamaru asked them to clarify how or why. They were all red in the face, but also very proud they had not lapsed into an uncontrollable fit of need like they had earlier.
“I think we should set up some controlled experiments, before the next time you perform the jutsu. We can collect data and compare it weekly.” Shikamaru thought for a moment. “I think we should start with this whole mind link thing – we need to see how it works and how to control it. It would be very… distressing… if it happened during a battle – or at the market.”
They all cringed at that idea.
“I assume you three share a room now.” Shikamaru stated, more than asked. “Is the room large enough to accommodate our sleeping mats as well?”
