“Saiyuri has already corrected you on your
social blunder.” Hinata couldn't muster her usual arrogant air. “Do be sure to
correct when corrected. After all the Hokage should know better. Are you still
chasing after that dream? I mean you have a habit of running off when things
get difficult so I can't be sure anymore.”
“Hinata-Sama.”
Saiyuri looked at the young mistress and Hinata bowed her head her hair
curtaining her face. Saiyuri looked at Naruto and rose from her seated position
and approached him. “Please excuse the young mistress, but she is going through
stressful times in days of late and shouldn't be distressed further.” Both
Naruto and Saiyuri looked at the girl who had her hands folded in her lap,
playing with her fingers.
“Oh.”
Naruto looked at her. That was the old habit of the old Hinata. “Goodnight
then.” He murmured.
“Uzumaki
Naruto, right?” Saiyuri's voice dipped into a lower volume. Naruto's gaze went
back to Hinata. She was now standing and walking back to the spot where Naruto
had seen her before, on the head of one of the Hokage of the past. Once in
position the winds made her hair and dress flutter.
“Uh,
right.” He nodded with a soft polite smile, attention momentarily on Saiyuri
before it slid back to Hinata.
“I
will remember it.”
“Um.
Okay?” He looked back at Saiyuri who was now turning her back to him. He took
that as the polite way of saying: get lost; so he left after another glance.
“Hinata-Sama,
meanness doesn't become you.” Hinata just let the wind blow through her.
*~*~*~*~*~*~
It was a beautiful day in
Konohagakure. The sun was shining, birds were singing and Hyuuga Hinata was
sitting in the middle of the courtyard on the Hyuuga complex the sun making her
deep blue locks shimmer beautifully; but to look at her face she seemed pained
with a hand over her heart.
“Naruto.”
She frowned feeling her heart ache and skip a beat almost simultaneously. She
sighed softly and closed her eyes. “He still has that power over me?” She frowned.
“Are you still chasing after that
dream?” She heard herself saying the
words and scarcely believed they came from her mouth. “I mean you have a habit of running off when things get difficult so I
can't be sure anymore.” A guilty
pang resounded from deep within.
Why, oh why, did she still love him
so?
“Stupid
Naruto.” Hinata’s lower lip trembled. “Stupid. Stupid. STUPID!” She grabbed the
food set before her for her lunch and threw it nearly hitting a maid in the
head. “Fool that I am,” She said. “…that I did not tear out my heart the day I
resolved to revenge myself.” Hinata’s hands shook as she clasped them in front
of her to stop the trembling. She did not see the small smiled of an old woman
looking down from the second floor before she turned away.
*~*~~**~
“What
right do you have to say stop negotiating her marriage, Saiyuri!” Hiashi
gritted his teeth and looked at the older woman.
“Hi-kun.”
Saiyuri sipped her tea. The head of the Hyuuga family froze at the tone in her
voice. “I have raised you and I am now raising your children.” She narrowed her
eyes at him. “Since Kari too failed in having the skills to raise her
daughters, heaven rest her soul, neither parent understood the best things for
the eldest daughter. I do.”
“Saiyuri.”
Hiashi looked away ashamed.
“It
is unfortunate her parents didn’t try harder. They’d know that forcing her is
her biggest incentive to shut down.” More sips and a guilty silence from Hiashi
filled the room. “She has already made up her mind about who her future husband
will be, anyway.” Saiyuri nodded.
“What?”
He looked at her.
“A
bright, charming young man from the village who has the ability to navigate the
very walls this family forced her to construct.”
“She cannot marry some lowlife scum. There is
an appearance to be held. The head of the Hyuuga family marrying some-some
commoner?!”
“Well.”
Saiyuri rose with a groan, her knees popping. “Ugh, getting too old.” She straightened out. “When a child is so
carelessly thrown to the “lowlife scum”, she is bound to become attached to
them.”
“Saiyuri,
the Hyuuga name!”
“Leave
Hinata-Sama to me.” Saiyuri bowed.
“Saiyuri!”
Hiashi frowned.
“The
longer you go on this path she will do more than enough damage herself. It is
better she marry some lowlife scum.
He can be hidden. What she is doing is overt and more damaging.” Hiashi closed
his eyes his mouth drawn into a thin line. When he opened them again he kept
them lowered.
“She…” He almost flinched at the
thought trying to solidify. “…is a broken girl, isn’t she?” Saiyuri smiled
slightly.
“She’s not broken. She spent her
life from the age of four nursing a wound that was not allowed to heal.” The
smiled faded to a darker look. Hiashi continued to look at the floor sharing
the dark look. “She is damaged. While I understand you are hurt by Kari’s
death, but that woman’s death is what that child needed.” More silence.
“Will it take my death for that
festering wound to heal?” An angry growl came from his throat. Hiashi turned
his back, an indicator no more words would be shared between them at the
moment. Saiyuri sighed and excused herself shaking her head. When the door
closed behind her she looked back.
“A proper father is necessary. You
are more foolish than Kari.” She shook her head and continued down the hall.
When she reached the main area maids were running about in a tizzy. Several
noticed Saiyuri and bowed. “What is going on?” She asked with commanded gained
from having years of seniority over them all.
“Well.” One started but her
courage faltered when she looked at the others who had their heads lowered.
“Speak up! One of you!” Saiyuri
looked at them her patience quickly wearing thin.
“Hinata-Sama is… is missing.” One
shy maid spoke up.
*~*~*~*~*~
It was a beautiful day in Konohagakure. The sun was
shining, birds were singing and Uzumaki Naruto was sweating up a storm as he
kept busy with his daily workout. To anyone looking from a distance they would
think he was invigorated by the beautiful weather and was going for broke; but
on the inside he was a jumble of emotions.
She talked down to him-Hyuuga Hinata talked down to him like
she was better than him, like everything she was about ranked higher than
everything he was about. Well, socially this was true, but that wasn’t the
point.
“Do be sure to correct when corrected.”
“Who
does she think she is treating me like that?”
‘Pyon!’ A clone vanished.
“I
was already trying to apologize and she wouldn’t even listen!” He punched two
more satisfied with the ‘pyon!’ sound
they made. He huffed angrily staring at the last clone that stood there
with a kunai in hand. “She hardly wanted to look at me!” He roared rushing the
clone and got punched. He slid several feet away. A shadow passed over him
stopping above his head and grew as the clone came crashing down fist ready.
Naruto rolled out of the way and pounced back up and the struggled ensued. It
wasn’t long before the clone vanished.
“It’s hot…” Naruto wiped a trickle
of sweat that ran down his face and dripped off the tip of his nose.
“Please excuse the young mistress, but
she is going through stressful times in days of late and shouldn't be
distressed further.” Both Naruto and Saiyuri looked at the girl who had her
hands folded in her lap, playing with her fingers.
He shook his head and approached his stuff not too far
away to grab a bottle he kept and took a healthy swig of water as thoughts
danced in his head. She had faltered. Her head lowered. She played with her
fingers. The Hinata that had been left behind was still there somewhere right? Otherwise she wouldn’t have done that?
“ARGH!
This is too confusing!” He flopped back on the dirt and closed his eyes bathing
in the sun.
“You still don’t understand how to
handle women? You’re still a kid.” He
could hear his god-father mock him in his head. “You still can’t tell when a woman wants you to touch her? After all
that travelling with me you can’t figure out even that?”
“Like
you know how to handle women properly, Ero-Sennin!” Naruto screeched opening
his eyes, the sun was low now and the world was bathed in an orange glow. He
had fallen asleep. “Hinata…” He frowned dusting himself off. “I’m sorry. I let
you fall through the cracks. I was careless.”
“You
were.” Naruto jumped and turned to face Kiba who gave a small wave now that he
was acknowledged.
“Your
guard was down.” Shino murmured beside Naruto. From the looks of the two they
had been busy also either training or sparring. They were filthy and slightly
damaged.
“We all were careless with her.” Kiba
continued. “She was always quiet and nice. Maybe too nice, but we can’t worry
about that.”
“She
was always bourgeois.” Shino added taking a seat on a rock nearby. “We knew
that form the beginning.”
“Bourgeois…”
Naruto tasted the word on his tongue. It tasted rich, heavy, almost bitter and
burdensome. “Hinata…bourgeois… I don’ see it.” Naruto sighed. Hinata’s name was
sweet, gentle and light.
“Baka…
of course you don’t!” Kiba growled irritably. “Hinata spent all of her time trying to
impress a bastard like you and you didn’t appreciate it!”
“Kiba.”
Shino spoke the name sternly.
“You
just kept on grinning “I’m going to be Hokage and you all will acknowledge me, Dattebayo!”
like some fool never realizing you don’t need the world to acknowledge you!”
Akamaru lifted his head to look at his partner, even he realizing how cruel he
sounded.
“Kiba.”
The Bug-Nin spoke the name once more, firmer than before.
“You
should know by now! You can make it to the top, be the world’s strongest and in
the end someone will always be able to get the upper hand of you! Hokages die!
New jutsus are learned and mastered every day. Aging robs you of your strength
and sometimes your wit.” Kiba gritted his teeth. “Even the San-Nin came to
their end, leaving only Tsunade-Sama.”
“Kiba!”
“No
I won’t stop just because you say, because even for a stupid asshole like
Naruto, even he should be able to wonder why does a girl of Hinata’s caliber
and breeding fall in love with someone who completely doesn’t understand her
worth?!”
“You
love her, don’t you?” Naruto narrowed his eyes at the Dog-Nin and he calmed
instantly.
“He
was rejected.” Shino added and Kiba’s mood dropped further. “Repeatedly.” Even
lower he dropped.
“She
spent her time wanting you and you couldn’t even acknowledge the courage it
took a girl like her to confess.” Akamaru whined.
“Well,
if it makes you feel any better I’m hated now for sure.” Naruto smiled softly,
almost sadly.
“Hated?”
The two Nin looked at loudest ninja.
“I’m
just shocked she could say such hurtful words. Even though she’s kind of the
same…” He paused again reflecting on her old habits that surfaced. “It still
pisses me off.”
“Naruto…” Kiba’s brow furrowed “Did… you meet Hinata?”
“Yeah.
Last night.” He sighed and relayed the story of the meeting.
“She
said all of that to you?” Kiba absent mindedly rubbed Akamaru’s back.
“Yeah.”
“She
is doing fine then.” Kiba and Shino rose together. “You should try to meet with
her again if you really want to apologize and get on her good side.”
“What?”
“Hinata...”
Kiba turned his back on Naruto. “Her father is now on the board of elders that
decides who gets to be Hokage. The Dog-Nin looked up. “And right now, she’s so
in charge of her household he scarcely gets his way anymore. If you really plan
to rise in rank in the near future, she could be the reason you’re accepted or
denied by planting the right or wrong ideas.”
“She
wouldn’t do that! That’s not Hinata!” Naruto screeched.
“She’s
not the Hinata you left.” Shino added. “As it stands… you’re the one she’s most
likely to listen and talk to. After all she did talk to you at all.”
“Hinata…” Naruto frowned. When
had she gained such power?
“Ah. Neji-san.” Shino mumbled
from behind his jacket collar. The patter of Neji’s feet landing got everyone’s
attention. Beside him were two Hyuuga servants, both wearing grim faces.
“Today.” Neji started. “Have any
of you seen Hinata-Sama?” The question alone brought tension to the three Nin.
“I saw her last night, but not
today.” Naruto furrowed his eyebrow. “Is… Hinata missing?” Neji’s face turned
to a grim frown.
“She was last seen on the Hyuuga
compound eight hours ago.”
