Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto or any of the characters but boy do I wish I did! I do not make money from this. |
A/N: Okay so here we are again. I just wanna thank everyone who’s reviewed so far, they really make me happy and make it worth carrying on even though the evilness of writer’s block keeps threatening. A few more would be nice though….please? (Lol, I’m begging now ^-^)
Is anyone following the anime atm? Intense huh? Can’t wait to see what happens even though, you know, if you follow the manga as well, you pretty much know who’s gonna end up getting the three-tails.
Also, has anyone seen the second shippuden movie Bonds? I bought it on dvd the other day and having stopped watching it since! There are some definite yaoi moments in that movie *sighs happily*.
Anyway, here’s chapter 4, Hidden Records.
________________________________________________________________________
Tsunade awoke, the familiar cottony felling in her mouth and the drumming band in her head present to enlighten her of her nasty hangover. She groaned as she rolled over, burying her head under the pillows in an attempt to block out the morning light that was flooding in through her bedroom window. ‘Wait a moment….morning?…BEDROOM?!’ she thought in surprise. She knew for a fact that she had last been drinking in her office but after that things became a little hazy. ‘Hell I have no idea what the fuck I did after that’ she sighed with a wry grin. ‘But how the hell did I get back here?’
Feeling a warmth creep over her, she realised that she wasn’t alone as she had previously thought. The warmth bathing her clammy skin came from a second body in her bed. ‘A body like a furnace!’ she thought, ‘well I’ve still got my clothes on so nothing completely inappropriate happened last night. Still, I wonder who it is?’ She raised her head cautiously, a bit apprehensive about finding out the identity of her duvet-snatcher. When she caught sight of familiar spiky, blond hair however, she relaxed with a slight frown. ‘Dammit!’ she thought, half relieved, half angry, ‘it’s only my damn gaki! He nearly gave me a heart attack!’
At that moment, the blond sighed softly in his sleep before moving closer to the warmth that had rolled away from him. The older blond let a small smile grace her face as she watched her dear one sleep. That familiar face, so like her little brother Niwaki’s, and yet so different. The cheekbones were slightly higher now that Naruto was older with those whisker-like marks that she found so endearing. They were so much a part of her gaki that she couldn’t imagine him without them. His eyes had become even bluer then they had been in his younger days and his face had taken on a leaner quality that was framed by unruly, blond locks. Simply put, Naruto had grown into an incredibly attractive young man, just like his father, Minato.
She knew that the fact that they were both there meant that it was he who had found her in her drunken state the night before. Although she was grateful it hadn’t been Shizune (her usually timid assistant was quite scary when she found her mentor like that) she was ashamed that she had once again allowed her brave boy to witness her weakness. Too often lately, the young kitsune had had to take care of her when it should have been the other way round. She had no defence for her actions; only that losing another loved one had made her lose sight of the ones she still had who needed her. Her beautiful Naruto, who had dealt with so much in his life, was one of the ones that she loved more than anything. Having never had any children of her own, she had come to consider the young blond as the son she had never had and she loved him dearly.
At that moment, the azure eyes opened slowly, their bright colour slightly dimmed from sleep. He blinked as he focused on the woman before him, opening his mouth in a wide yawn as he stretched his limbs, satisfied with the cracks that sounded from his joints.
“Ohayo, Baa-chan.” he sighed thickly as she ruffled his sleep-tousled hair affectionately.
“Ohayo, gaki” she murmured back, surprised that he hadn’t starting yelling at her the moment he woke up. Taking it as a good sign, she decided to bring it up first and hopefully curtail his wrath before it appeared.
“Naruto…I-” she started before being interrupted by the blond’s soft-spoken words,
“I don’t want to hear any excuses, Baa-chan. I don’t want to hear you trying to justify your actions, but what I really don’t want to hear is you promising me you won’t get like that again when I know it’s a lie.” He covered his eyes with his forearm, not willing to see the hurt expression on her face which would only make him feel guilty for saying what had to be said.
Tsunade felt her throat tighten painfully. The fact that he hadn’t yelled told her more than anything that he was disappointed with her, which was far worse than him simply being angry. He also wouldn’t look at her which made her heart contract as the pain in her throat got worse. ‘I’ve really hurt him this time.’ she thought sadly.
Naruto had yelled at her on plenty of occasions before and, when that had failed, he had tried speaking to her seriously. He had begged her to stay sober, if not for him, then for the citizens of Konoha who needed her strength. The conviction of his words had made her realise how stupid she’d been and she had stopped, but the situation that was currently unfolding, with the Uchiha’s fate practically decided with her powerless to stop it, she had been unable to face her gaki knowing that she could not help him. He thought that she was unaware of his feelings for the dark-haired teen but it couldn’t have been more obvious. It hurt to think of the pain he would go through when the inevitable happened and he lost the one he had loved for almost all of his young life.
She swallowed the tears that threatened as she lowered her gaze before sighing softly,
“I’m sorry, gaki. You said you didn’t want to hear it but I’m going to give it anyway. I promise that I’ll try my best to overcome this.” The young kitsune’s lips tightened momentarily before relaxing as he uttered a small “Ah” from beneath his arm as he moved it slightly to fix one bright, blue eye on her. She smiled as brightly as she could and was relieved to receive a small one back. It wasn’t much but it was a start. She huffed in mock impatience as she gently rolled him out of her bed.
“Mataku, it’s still early but I suppose I have to get up, don’t I? Why don’t you go home, have a shower and something to eat? I’ll do the same and then we’ll meet in my office in about an hour, ne?” she said as she pushed him slowly towards the door, “then we can try and come up with something to save your teme.” Blue eyes turned to her with an incredulous look as he realised that she was indeed going to try and help him. The look faded into a warm smile as he darted around her, heading for the window which he promptly jumped out of, ignoring her yells chastising him for once again using windows instead of doors.
Half an hour later
Naruto sat in the kitchenette of his tiny apartment, his palms pressed flat against his eyes, watching the colours swirl behind his eyelids. The panic was starting to return as the loneliness of his empty apartment beat against him, clearly impressing on him the way it would only get worse if he were to lose Sasuke. Actually being physically alone would seem like nothing compared to that.
As much as he tried to think of a solution, he drew up blanks at every turn. His only hope was that Tsunade would be able to provide him with some help but he wasn’t all that hopefull which, in itself, was unusual for him.
Thoughts of what it would be like without Sasuke naturally turned his thoughts to what it would be like if the Uchiha were allowed to remain. Where would he live? The Uchiha complex or with Naruto? Would their friendship be as it had been before or would it turn into something new? Would he ever find the courage to confess to the pale teen or would he simply settle for something less, content as long as Sasuke was nearby? He realised the uselessness of such thoughts as they only made his heart clench at all the possible ‘what if’s’.
Sighing, he raised his head off his palms, wincing at the bright light that pierced his vision. There was no point in sitting there, brooding. He had to see Tsunade; she would have something to help him he was sure.
At least, he could hope.
“I’m sorry gaki but I’ve got nothing. I’ve tried talking to the counsel on Sasuke’s behalf but they refuse to listen. As far as they’re concerned, Uchiha is a missing nin and should be punished accordingly.” Tsunade closed her eyes rather than witness the pain that was clearly visible on Naruto’s face. His breath caught slightly as he tried to speak.
“But, Baa-chan! Surely there’s something you can do. Something that you know of that will save Sasuke?” He felt the panic rising faster now. He had never felt so hopeless and he didn’t like it. In the past, anything that threatened his precious people had been a physical obstacle that he could defeat but this was far more terrifying because it wasn’t something he could beat with his fists and would take more than strength to overcome.
Tsunade’s eyes filled with unshed tears as shook her head again, effectively killing his heart. His hope died; there was nothing he could do. All he could do now was wait for a miracle.
A knock sounded at the door but it barely registered with the heartbroken blond. Neither did Tsunade’s answering call nor the unenthusiastic greeting that followed. It was only as the identity of the one who the lazy tone belonged to permutated his numb brain, that hope flared once again, hot and powerful. He launched himself from the chair towards the figure, yelling the other teen’s name as he caught him round the middle.
“SHIKAMARU!!”
The brunette saw the practically flying blond coming at him and braced himself for the impact.
“Oi…Naruto!” the lazy genius exclaimed as the weight hit him, sending him tumbling to the floor. Groaning slightly, he opened his eyes to find his blond friend sitting on his lap, gazing at him with hope-filled, tear-stained eyes. ‘Kawaii,’ he thought before shaking his head roughly. No matter how cute his friend looked when he was crying, he was upset and Shikamaru hated that. He smiled at the blond as he moved him aside. Only something truly bad could make the blond forget his usual self and show weakness like this and he had a good idea what it was.
“I know…Sauke, right? Don’t worry, I’m gonna help you but it’s gonna be difficult which is troublesome. But I’m sure between the two of us we’ll find a way.” The smile he received was radiant and the determination returned to the young kitsune’s eyes.
“Arigatou, Shikamaru.” he uttered softly as he stood beside the Chunnin who was brushing off his slacks as he turned to face their leader.
“Tsunade-sama, Uchiha Sasuke remains in his room. He has not done nor said anything to cause concern. The only thing he did ask for was, strangely enough, a bowl of miso ramen.” he commented with a wry grin as he turned to face his blond friend who grinned uncertainly as he rubbed the back of his head in a familiar gesture. The brunnete continued knowing that what he said next would surely erase that small smile.
“I have spoken to the counsel about the Uchiha’s case but nothing I’ve said has made the slightest difference. They asked me to inform you that the trial will be held this afternoon at which time, the sentence will be announced.” Naruto frowned deeply at that. They’d already made their decision then; the trial was merely for appearances. He opened his mouth to comment on this but was swiftly silenced by Tsunade, who’s grim expression showed that she knew the brunette was not finished. Shikamaru nodded as he continued,
“I have named myself as the Uchiha’s defendant which I have already cleared with him. I have spoken with him in depth and he volunteered everything he’s knows, everything he’s done and everything he’s discovered and it doesn’t paint a nice picture.” At this, he paused, unsure of whether he should continue with Naruto listening. Some of what he was about to say would undoubtedly make the young kitsune extremely angry and it would not help him, or Sasuke, if he were to go on the rampage. The counsel would see it as the perfect chance to lock him up or kill him, along with the Uchiha. However, he knew that Naruto would find out sooner or later; all he could hope for was that the Kyuubi-container controlled himself and so told both him and their leader the truth behind the Uchiha massacre.
When he had finished, both the Hokage and the blond were shaking with barely suppressed rage. Naruto felt that he had never been so angry in his life. Everything that had happened to Sasuke, everything that had ever caused the raven pain was a direct result of the counsel’s decisions. His teeth sank into his bottom lip, drawing blood, as he tried to ignore the Kyuubi’s mutterings about killing them all and decorating the village with their entrails. He just managed to control himself as the Kyuubi growled and sharpened his claws on the cage that imprisoned him. Still shaking with the effort involved he turned to Shikamaru with an angry frown.
“So…what you’re saying is…that Uchiha Itachi was not guilty of anything other than following orders to protect the village? And that he became a member of the Akatsuki in an effort to slow them down? And the counsel knew this and yet they said nothing?!” Against all his efforts and his will, his eyes bled into the rage-filled red of the demon within him. He bowed his head and clenched his fists as he struggled to claw back control from the beast.
Shikamaru involuntarily drew breath as he watched Naruto’s eyes change to those of the blood-thirsty demon. Despite the fact that he knew it was Naruto who was in control, seeing the eyes of the bijuu the blond housed looking at him was terrifying to say the least. He felt panic welling up in his throat but he fought it back down; he didn’t want to feel afraid of his friend. Instead, he placed his palm on Naruto’s shoulder and smiled grimly in understanding.
“Ah, I know. I was bloody angry too when he first told me. After everything they’ve tried to do to you in the past, I knew straight away that he was telling the truth. That’s why I’m even more determined to be his defendant.” He watched with relief as the blood-red eyes faded back to the sky-blue that he was familiar with as the blond took a calming breath. A tanned hand was placed over his as Naruto directed his gaze to the floor while speaking quietly to his lazy friend, almost too scared to hear the answer.
“Shikamaru, you’re a bloody genius and Sasuke couldn’t hope for a better ally at this time. You’ll be able to do far more for him than I can but…” The brunette waited as his friend took a deep breath, as if finding the strength to continue, before azure eyes were once again upon him with all their amazing clarity,
“Can you really save Sasuke? I can’t…I can’t imagine being without him,” he murmured as he held back the tears that wanted to fall; he hated showing this weakness to the other boy, “It hurts just to think about it. I know it’s asking a lot of you but I’m begging you Shika. Please…please save my teme.” The young chuunin nodded as the eyes upon him continued to hold their fierce pride and determination even as they were filled with tears. He knew exactly what Naruto was afraid of; after Asuma’s passing, he knew what it was like to lose one of your best friends but he couldn’t help but think that, with Naruto and Sasuke, it was a bit different. Something in what the blond had said, in his actions towards the Uchiha, and Uchiha’s actions towards Naruto, told the young genius that the two of them were on the verge of their friendship changing into something more intimate. In fact, Sasuke had voiced to him, after telling him of the Uchiha massacre, that he had no further inclinations for revenge. His only wish was to live, fight and die at Naruto’s side.
This brought a genuine smile to the lazy teens face. He thought that, after everything Naruto and Sasuke had suffered in the past, they deserved the chance to find happiness, especially if that happiness could be found within the other. Shikamaru decided that he would do everything he could to give them that chance. And so, he did his best to comfort the blond before him.
“Naruto, I can’t promise that we’ll succeed but I promise you that I will do all I can. That’s part of the reason that I’m here now. I’ve already looked through all the present laws relating to cases like this to try and find something, a loophole, anything to free Uchiha but there was nothing.” He shrugged his shoulders in an empty gesture of defeat but the telltale gleam in his eyes told a different story.
Naruto felt an almost feral grin spread across his face as he recognised the mischievous look in the usually passive brunettes eyes.
“Ne? You’ve got an idea, haven’t you tebayo?” He almost skipped in joy as his friend nodded but managed to stop himself.
“Indeed I have,” he chuckled lightly at the expression on Naruto’s face, “but I need Tsunade-sama’s cooperation for it.” They both turned their eyes upon their leader who, until then, had been quietly observing them. She sighed as she noticed that the familiar glint was once again present in the gaki’s eyes and had even infected the lazy chuunin. She chuckled lightly as she prompted the teen to continue.
“Well, none of the current laws can help Sasuke but there may be an old one, that hasn’t yet been repealed, that can. After all, the records show that missing nin’s have returned to Konoha in the past and not all of them were sentenced to death.”
Naruto felt more hope and strength bloom within him at Shikamaru’s words. Maybe there really was something they could do…if Shikamaru was willing to think so then who was he to argue with a genius?
“But none of the records tell me why they were pardoned or how the situation came about in the first place.”
Tsunade frowned a little at what he was saying. She had a sneaking suspicion that she knew what he was going to ask of her. Placing her chin upon her intertwined fingers, she regarded him closely,
“Ok. I understand that but what is it you want from me?” Shikamaru held the Hokage’s intense gaze as he voiced their last hope.
“I need the key to the Hokage’s private records room.”
