A/N: Hurrah! 2 days
of sleeping has finally made me feel less like shit, and I think this chapter
at least makes sense now.
Review Responses:
Sneakyfox: Kakashi just strikes me a guy that would be a
punker. And I really don’t want this fic
to be much about Naruto, since I promised a Gaa/Sasu fic, but I couldn’t leave
him out all together. I think I’m going
to be using him to tie things together once in a while.
Nejislady: I’m glad you’re enjoying it. It’s a gift for being so faithful in
reading. I kind of figure Sasuke would
not accept a dumb person, but I like the idea of Gaara being strong enough to
keep holding himself up despite what he’s facing. Basically, he’s been doing this forever and
now he just can’t keep doing it. Now he
needs to have people take care of him for once.

Chapter 4
Gaara sat pouting in Jiraiya’s office, except Gaara didn’t
pout. He crossed his arms over his chest
and slouched further down in the chair.
He was going to be put back on some medication today, but they didn’t
want to give him much. Jiraiya had been
asking him for two days now to tell him the kinds of things the voice told him
and what his childhood had been like.
Gaara sighed and looked out the window.
Jiraiya smiled. He
had most of Gaara’s information in his file from his previous psychiatrist. At six months old Gaara’s father had taken a
butcher’s knife, stood over Gaara’s crib, and slit his own throat. Gaara had been found covered in his father’s
blood and screaming hysterically by his mother almost 6 hours later. His father had been watching him while she
was running errands. From that time on,
Gaara’s disposition changed. He’d gone
from a relatively happy, good baby to a baby that demanded attention and
screamed a lot. His sister and brother
had been visiting their grandmother at the time, in order to give his parents
some time alone with the baby.
He sighed and shook his head. “You want to talk to me today? I can’t put you back on any medication unless
you give me some kind of indication that you want to try to figure out the
cause of this voice. I know you need a
little help keeping him at bay with drugs, but I like to try to make it so you
don’t have to rely on drugs for your entire life.”
Gaara frowned, but turned his head back toward Jiraiya. “I’m fucked up, what else do you need to
know?”
Jiraiya smiled softly.
“Gaara, I’ve got your file. I’ve
seen the things that your mother and father have done. I know that Temari’s been raising you for the
last three years. But that’s not the
kind of stuff I want to know today. I
want you to tell me about this Naruto who came with your sister and brother to
check you in. Is he your boyfriend?”
Gaara sighed, but shook his head. “He’s my best friend. The only person I think is actually my
friend.”
Jiraiya smiled.
“That’s a start. How come you
don’t think he’s using you? What is it
about him that makes you feel he’s truly a friend?”
Gaara smiled. “From the first day,
despite all the rumors surrounding me when I transferred to my new school, he
was kind to me.” His eyes lit up a
little as he spoke of the blonde. “He
just has this way of taking care of everybody and everything. He wants to hold people up and be their
rock. Mostly he just doesn’t ask me to
be something I’m not. He’s what I want
to be.”
Jiraiya cocked his head.
“How so?”
Gaara frowned for a second before sliding back up into the
chair so he was sitting more comfortably.
“He went through something worse than I did and he’s still eternal
sunshine.” Gaara started to gnaw on his
bottom lip. He didn’t think friends were
supposed to go into details about their friend’s lives. “I can’t tell you what, because he told me in
confidence, but he is a very, very good person.”
Jiraiya smiled.
“Okay.” He stood up and grabbed a
pill from the counter behind his desk.
“Here’s the thing, Gaara. We’re
going to try this new medication with you, but I’d really like to see if we
can’t work out the root causes of your psychosis. Is that all right with you?”
Gaara nodded. “I just
want to get rid of the voice. I can do
whatever you ask to do that.”
Jiraiya smiled. “I’ll
be honest with you; most people still need medication for the rest of their
lives. However, I’ve had success with
keeping people on minimum dosages.” He
handed Gaara the pill and the water.
Gaara put the pill in his mouth and brought the water up,
sipping it and letting the pill slide down his throat. You
really think this will be enough to get rid of me. You must be one stupid fuck. He’s just trying to control your mind with
his mind control drugs. Gaara sighed
and closed his eyes. “Thank you,
Jiraiya. May I go wait for Naruto now?”
Jiraiya nodded and called Shizune into his office. “Escort Gaara to the visitation room. His guest is here all ready.” Shizune smiled and nodded. Jiraiya smiled at Gaara. “The medication should take effect sometime
tomorrow, okay?”
Gaara nodded. “Thanks
for everything.”
*************************************
Sasuke sat in the grass with his head on Shikamaru’s
lap. Really, he only did it because
Shikamaru didn’t mind and it kept the stupid, rabid girls away. Shikamaru smiled as he ran his hands through
Sasuke’s hair. “How come you never have
any visitors? I saw your father that
first time he came to visit, but you haven’t had anyone since.”
Sasuke shrugged. “I
don’t really have any friends. Most of
the people I know are only interested in me because of my name. I’d never met anyone like you on the
outside. And my family doesn’t want me
to be my brother, even if he’s still their favorite.”
Shikamaru scooted back against the tree a little more. He yawned as he looked at the clouds before
turning his attention to the man who was lying on his lap. “You’ve mentioned your brother more than
once, but you’ve never told me what happened.”
Sasuke frowned. “You
know my last name is Uchiha.”
Shikamaru cracked an eye and looked down at the boy on his
lap while his hand continued to stroke his hair. “Brother to Itachi, then?” Sasuke nodded. “I can’t begin to imagine what that’s like so
I have no plans of insulting you and pretending that I do.”
Sasuke smiled. “You
know, Shikamaru, I’ve never had a good friend other than my cousin. Why Itachi actually killed him is beyond me.” Sasuke sighed. He didn’t feel like delving into his thoughts
about his brother any more than he had.
“What about you? You don’t have
visitors either.”
Shikamaru smiled. “I
used to. My mom and dad came here every
day when I was first committed.” He
sighed as he looked down into Sasuke’s eyes.
“They stopped when I told them that seeing them wasn’t helping me get
better, and that they were wasting time trying to get to me every day.” He smiled.
“They’ll be in sometime today though.
They always come once a week.”
Sasuke frowned. “So,
what are you in for?”
Shikamaru sighed.
Sasuke reached up to touch his cheek gently. “You know you don’t have to say anything if
you don’t want to.” He smirked. “We could so have dated outside if you were
gay and I did relationships.”
Shikamaru laughed.
“I’m in here because I’ve got a manic-depressive personality. So far the only medication I’ve responded to
has caused a severe allergic reaction and I can’t take it.” He moved his hand through Sasuke’s hair
again. “We could never have dated,
though. Not because I’m straight,
because that’s about the funniest thing I’ve heard in a while; I wouldn’t waste
the energy discriminating between men and women. No, we couldn’t have dated because I don’t
like mental patients.”
Sasuke chuckled softly.
He knew this was something to cherish, his relationship with Shikamaru
that was. He sighed as he pulled himself
up to sit beside Shikamaru. “Do you go
to the group therapy sessions?”
Shikamaru nodded his head.
“It took me a good three months though.
I’m prone to serious depression, and I hated when anyone would see me
that way. I didn’t think anyone would be
accepting of me. No offense, but what
Pein said was true. Most of the people
on this floor are just rich kids with no real worries in the world. I don’t think that about you, Sasuke. From the start I could see you had an actual
problem. I hope you find what you need
to get through it.”
Sasuke smiled sadly.
“So far it’s been denial and running.
I suppose I’ll have to look for something else now, huh?”
Shikamaru shrugged.
“How are your individual sessions with Kakashi?”
Sasuke sighed and shrugged.
“I don’t know. I can’t seem to
let my guard down around him, even if I do like him. I feel like if I put my walls down then I’m
going to break. I built so much up
around my heart when Itachi killed – him.”
Sasuke bit his lip as tears threatened to spill down his cheeks now that
they had formed in his eyes.
Shikamaru smiled softly.
“You let your walls down around me.”
Sasuke nodded as he wiped his eyes quickly. “You’re so much like he was though. You just seem to understand without having to
go through all the bullshit. I don’t
have to say things that I don’t mean to make you happy.”
Shikamaru nodded.
“When’s your next session?”
Sasuke stared at the ground as he felt Shikamaru’s hand start running through
his hair again. “In a few minutes. Can you come with me?”
Shikamaru shook his head.
“It’s not that I don’t want to, Sasuke, but I know it’s important for
you to be able to trust Kakashi.” He
smirked as he saw familiar faces headed towards them. “And my parents are here.”
Sasuke turned his head in the direction Shikamaru was
looking as a man who looked like an older copy of Shikamaru and a woman with
long hair pulled back. They seemed happy
to be here and he looked back at Shikamaru.
“You better go say hi and whatever.”
Shikamaru shrugged.
“You want to come with for a few minutes before you have to go to
Kakashi?”
Sasuke shrugged back. “Whatever.” Sasuke sighed as he sat near Shikamaru and
his parents. They were how a family was
supposed to act. Shikamaru’s father
brought him some letters from relatives and his mom brought him some new clothes
and music. Sasuke sighed. “I gotta get going.”
Shikamaru smiled and nodded.
“You’re eating supper with us tonight, right?”
Sasuke nodded. He turned toward
Shikamaru’s parents. “Nice to meet
you.” He didn’t wait for an answer
before he headed inside to find Kakashi.
Sasuke sulked through the halls.
He kicked his foot against Kakashi’s door to announce his presence. He didn’t wait for a come in before just
pushing the door open. He flopped down
in one of the chairs, sprawling his legs over one side and throwing his arms
over the other. “Can we just pretend we
did this today?”
Kakashi chuckled on the other side of his desk. Sasuke had been mostly avoiding all topics
related to why he was running away from home.
“Sorry kid, as much as I’d like to, we can’t. You need to figure out why you keep running
away.”
Sasuke pouted. “You
know that.”
Kakashi smiled. He’d
never tell Sasuke how adorable his pouting was, it would only be
counterproductive. Kakashi was just
happy to have someone else on his floor with a legitimate problem. He got tired to listening to privileged
youths telling him about how unfair their lives were. Sasuke had something to complain about. His family was definitely messed up and
having his only friend killed by his only brother was definitely a problem that
could make a person a little nuts. “You
need to talk about it though. I know the
reason, but I don’t know what was going on in your head. You need to talk about that before we can
work on moving on.”
Sasuke sighed. “I can’t
take the walls down. If you want to help
me you’re going to have a find a way for that to change. I want to trust you, but I don’t. Shikamaru is the only person in this place I
trust and that’s because he just gets me.”
Kakashi smirked. “I
saw the two of you looking pretty comfortable together earlier. Are you sure you don’t feel something more
for him?”
Sasuke shook his head.
“I kind of wish I did because I think he’d be a great boyfriend, but
no. I don’t feel anything for him, other
than a sense of friendship. The first I’ve
felt since his death.”
“Sasuke,” Kakashi frowned.
If Sasuke couldn’t even say the name of the cousin he’d lost, they were
going to have trouble moving forward. “You
need to work on saying his name, okay?
Even if it’s not me, you have to try to say his name to someone by our
next session.”
Sasuke’s walls shot back up twice as thick. He nodded to satisfy Kakashi, but saying his name was just something he couldn’t
do. If he said his name, then it would
make everything real and final. He could
pretend he was still with him if he never said his name. Sasuke sighed as he stood and strolled from
the doctor’s office. He sighed as he saw
a blonde with the nurse that was normally with that red headed high risk
patient being led toward his corridor.
He shrugged and made his way back to his room. He found Shikamaru waiting for him. “I assumed you wouldn’t be able to drop the
walls down enough, so I grabbed one of my CDs for you. I thought we could just nap in here.”
Sasuke smirked. “What
about no socializing in the rooms?”
Shikamaru shrugged. “You
tell Kakashi about us?” Sasuke
nodded. “Then that’s enough. He’ll let it slide this time, if someone
finds out.”
Sasuke smiled and climbed into his bed next to
Shikamaru. He smirked when he heard The
Misfits come on. “I didn’t take you for
a Misfits fan.”
Shikamaru shrugged and closed his eyes as he wrapped his arms around
Sasuke. In another life they probably
could have been more than friends, but this was enough for him now. Besides, he’d seen the interested look Sasuke
had given that high-risker. There was
probably a possibility for something there.
*************
Naruto smiled as Gaara and Shizune came back into the
room. “Gaara, how have you been?” He stood up and gave his friend a hug.
Gaara smiled a real smile.
“I’ve been better, but I’m great now that you’re here.”
Naruto beamed. “You
know you got the highest score on that test, and you weren’t even in class for
the information. Sometimes you make me
so jealous.”
Gaara smirked. “Well if
you’d stop paying so much attention to the teacher and start paying more
attention to the information, you’d be doing better.”
Naruto laughed. “I
can’t help it that Mr. Sarutobi is so hot.
And it should be a crime for pants to fit a body that well.”
Gaara chuckled. Only Naruto could bring
this side of him out so easily. “Did you
bring my homework?”
Naruto nodded and handed a book bag across the table to Gaara. Shizune had all ready searched it for
anything that Gaara wasn’t allowed to have.
Naruto sighed. “I wish you were
back in school with me. It’s lonely
without you.”
Gaara frowned. “You
still have Izumo though. I mean, I guess
he doesn’t get to see you much while you’re at school, but at least your dad is
there if you need him.”
Naruto snorted. His
adoptive father, known so affectionately by most as ‘Zumo, was the principle of
their school. Naruto had no choice but
to behave because his dad would shoot him otherwise. “Whatever.
Dad’s been so obsessed lately over this guy he’s interested in that half
the time he doesn’t even see me at home.”
Gaara sighed. “You
know that’s not the case, Naruto. Your
dad loves you more than anything.”
Naruto smiled. “Yeah. I just like to be a dick I guess.”
Gaara smirked. “Speaking
of dick, are you still taking some from Hyuuga?”
Naruto blushed. “Shut
up. You know I haven’t even told him I
feel. I’m worried about what he’ll
think. I mean, with what his cousin did
to him, how do you even trust a person?”
Gaara frowned. “She’s
in here. I mean, no one told me that’s
who she is, but she looks just like Neji.”
Shizune sighed. “You
have to keep all that information to yourselves. We aren’t allowed to talk about other
patients, is that clear?”
Both boys nodded before Naruto burst out snickering. “I’m sorry.
I’m so used to getting into things I’m not supposed to get into. This feels like being at home.”
Gaara shrugged. “You
said that your dad has a crush. Who is
it?”
Naruto smiled from ear to ear. “I don’t know much. Apparently he’s a childhood friend
though. They went through school
together from elementary school through high school. I do know his name is Kotetsu or something
like that.”
Gaara smirked. “You
should bring your dad in the next time you come visit.”
Shizune nudged Gaara.
“Stop interfering.”
Gaara sighed. She’s out to get you. He frowned, but chose to ignore the
voice. His medicine should be kicking in
in the next day or so and he wasn’t going to let it ruin his time with Naruto. “It’s not interfering if they both want it
and are too shy to say it.”
Shizune and Naruto answered at the same time, “That’s
exactly what interfering is.”
Naruto started laughing.
“How about you, Gaa? Find anyone
in here that you find attractive.”
Gaara snorted. “I’m
about the most asexual person on the face of the planet. You know how I feel about love.”
Naruto sighed. “Yeah, I do. I also know you’re wrong. You’re very lovable and someday I’m going to
have to threaten to remove someone’s testicles if they even think about hurting
you.”
See he doesn’t want
you to be with someone. He’s going to
threaten them off. No one really cares
about you. Gaara growled and shook
his head. “I seriously hope these meds
kick in soon.”
Naruto frowned. “Gaara,
I think I’m going to let you get some rest.”
He smiled and pulled Gaara into a tight hug again. “I love you, Gaara. You need to rest and let your medications
take effect.” He pulled back and smiled
again at his friend. “I’ll be back next
Friday with your homework and to talk some more. If they let you call, you can feel free to
call me.”
