every finger in the room is pointing at me
I wanna spit in their faces
then I get afraid of what that could bring
I got a bowling ball in my stomach
I got a desert in my mouth
figures that my COURAGE would choose to sell out now
I’ve been raising up my hands
drive another nail in
just what GOD needs one more victim
every day I crucify myself
nothing I do is good enough for you
and my HEART is sick of being in chains
you’re just an empty cage kid if you kill the bird

Chapter IV There Is No Life Without Remorse
“Honestly, it was the most bizarre fight I’ve ever been in,” Neji snorted softly. “But that one with his Samehada, just unbelievable. You were right to say that we needed to be careful.”
Itachi had slipped his thumbs under Neji’s gi and was softly stroking his sides. “Akatsuki will continue to become more powerful. They should have stopped them a long time ago. Now the only thing that can be done is pointless damage-control.”
Neji mulled it over in his head but eventually nodded. “That’s why we’re here, to protect the rest of the world from them, even if Akatsuki has gained power.”
“Aren’t you the good little ninja?” Itachi teased, although a smile never appeared on his pale face.
Neji noticed that there was something troubling Itachi. He normally never acted so gloomy when he was with him. “What’s going on?” he asked straightforwardly.
Itachi stopped stroking his skin and looked directly at Neji, who just kept staring back. A smile broke through and he felt such simple relief that there was at least one person who wasn’t afraid to look him in the eye, trusted that he won’t be hurt and was concerned enough to ask what was occupying his mind. “An ANBU-mission next week. They’ve decided to try once more and kill Orochimaru.” Neji couldn’t stop his nose from wrinkling as he thought of that snake.
“Before the invasion of Konoha, he attacked me once, wanting to take over my body.” His hand was suddenly grabbed. “I deflected the attack, obviously but he has been relentless.”
“Have you told Hokage-sama? It would be pure idiocy to send you of all people on this mission,” Neji responded. The news surprised him greatly and his mind already helpfully supplied him with the possible outcomes of Itachi’s upcoming mission. Itachi was a genius but there was always that off-chance… Lips attached to his and all thoughts came to a halt.
“She knows, yes. She says that with me as ANBU-captain, the mission should be a success.” Neji didn’t understand completely. Itachi wasn’t one to underestimate himself so why was he so worried? “He once mentioned that if it wasn’t for your curse-seal, he would have gone after you.” The thought horrified Neji. While it was true that he detested his curse-seal more than he had ever hated anything else, now it seems it was the only thing stopping Orochimaru from performing his Fushi Tensei on him. He couldn’t help but feel slightly grateful for this unexpected advantage. But it only worried him more as he looked at Itachi, since he didn’t have any physical barrier stopping that vile snake. It was logical that Itachi was a much-desired next vessel, but Neji’s throat tightened. There was a reason Orochimaru was still a feared and legendary missing-nin: the man was quite the genius himself and very adept in the art of jutsus.
It was pointless to try and see this from a more positive perspective. It would only be a euphemism of reality and that is something no shinobi can afford, a lesson quickly learned after the first few missions with casualties or near-death situations.
He finally settled on a simple, “Be careful”. Itachi kept stroking his sides, nodding with his eyes closed.
[-]
They had finally managed to take out Orochimaru’s subordinates and had lured him out of his hide-out. Itachi looked around him briefly, assessing the state of the unusually large ANBU-squad. He felt all their gazes on him, awaiting his command. Seeing Orochimaru standing in front of them, a confident smirk on his face made him suspect that he already had a plan to deflect their attack.
“Itachi-kun, it’s been a long time,” Orochimaru said. Yellow eyes were staring straight at him and seemed to pierce through his wooden mask with their intensity. Itachi nodded slowly.
“You look in…perfect health as usual.” The comment was followed with a serpent’s tongue licking pale lips. Itachi’s team-mates now understood that Orochimaru’s fascination with their captain went beyond finding him a perfect vessel and some couldn’t prevent a shudder from rolling down their spine.
“Hiru Banshō: Bōka no Jutsu,” Orochimaru spoke softly before vanishing from sight. Everyone kept up their defence as they looked around, trying to find a hint of a chakra-signature. A cold hand wrapped itself around Itachi’s ankle and snakes shot up from the ground, tying themselves further up Itachi’s legs. Orochimaru rose up until he stood right in front of Itachi, his eyes sliding over every ridge of his mask.
“Ah, the lonesome wolf. Kind of biased, don’t you agree?” The ANBU were staring at the scene, wondering if they should jump in before anything worse could happen since the snakes were now wound up to Ookami’s chest. Orochimaru reached up his hand and grabbed a hold of the mask. In less than a second, an explosion sounded and the ANBU shielded their eyes from the harsh light. Togake, as was his name in ANBU Core, smiled behind his mask. He should have known Ookami, or rather Itachi would have taken precautions before directly facing Orochimaru.
The smoke cleared and Orochimaru was kneeling on the ground, holding his hands in front of his eyes. Itachi dropped down fro a nearby tree but stayed a fair distance away from the Sannin.
Orochimaru removed his hands and they all could see he had trouble seeing anything at all but Itachi doubted he would give up so easily. The ground rumbled under their feet and pure chaos broke out as an eight-headed white snake appeared in front of them, removing Orochimaru from their sight. Itachi frowned as he heard the many screams from the ANBU to try and come up with a way of immediate attack but silenced them with a flick of the hand, his eyes transfixed on the serpent.
“Attack their eyes and sever their head if possible.” By taking away their sight, slaying them would be a lot easier. Admittedly, he could defeat Orochimaru and his snakes by using Susa-no-O but he knew what effect it had over his body and especially his eyes. If preserving his eyesight meant sacrificing some of his team-mates, so be it. He knew how valuable he was to Konoha. And exposing Susa-no-O could form a predicament. Only if all else fails.
He unsheathed his katana and joined in the attack. An unbridled scream of pain filled the air and even without looking, Itachi knew they had already lost one ANBU despite their quick attack. It wouldn’t be the last. Orochimaru may be considered a psychopath but he was also incredibly intelligent and talented. It was a rarity to be faced with such an exceptional shinobi and as was just shown, even fewer would live to tell the tale. He spun around, just barely able to escape a serpent’s head coming straight towards him and straightened his arm, his katana hitting the snake in its neck but his angle didn’t allow him to completely slash it and he jumped away, landing on one of the eight tails. He checked where Orochimaru had gone but the presence of the overly sized serpents made it impossible to discern Orochimaru’s chakra-signature, the summoned animals soaked in his chakra.
A head was separated from a snake’s neck and as it hit the ground, it crumbled to dust before disappearing. The now headless body was swaying with the others’ movements but had been rendered useless. Luckily, it was purely a matter of removing the heads. It would have been a lot worse had it turned out that another head would spew out from the neck.
He summoned several clones and they simultaneously leaped to one of the snake’s heads from behind, two stabbing it in the eyes and the other four cleaving its neck.
The diversity in attacks apparently sufficed to slowly but surely take the serpent out, even though they were only with twenty men in total. There was another anguished scream and they all saw an ANBU captured in a snake’s mouth, the fangs piercing his chest. Even if they managed to rescue him, there was no way he would survive. Most of the ANBU had decided to try and release their team-mate nonetheless and directed their attention to the one snake but thereby leaving them more vulnerable.
Itachi cursed at their stupidity. “Go back to your original positions!” he yelled, trying to reach them over the loud rumble from the snakes’ movements. Hearing the force in his voice, they listened obediently and the small groups formed again, each focusing on one of the three remaining snakes. Through this dynamic team-work, there soon was just one head and some grinned under their mask. Even if they had lost three men by now, there were still more than enough to defeat the serpent and thereby Orochimaru. No one could have predicted, however, that Orochimaru rose up from the snake’s mouth, his own opening to unveil his Kusanagi no Tsurugi.
“Retreat,” Itachi commanded. He stayed where he was, hearing the others take cover in the nearby trees. He recognized the Kusanagi from what he’d heard about the fight between Orochimaru and the Fifth and knew their mission would fail if he didn’t step in now. He closed his eyes and prepared to use the most powerful technique of his Sharingan. Orochimaru was sidling up closer and it would be seconds or less before he would attack.
Someone hit him from the side, knocking him to the ground and he opened his eyes. An ANBU lay half on top of him but Orochimaru was smart enough to use this diversion as the perfect moment of attack. Itachi rolled them both away, the Kusanagi grazing his armour and instantly summoned Susa-no-O. Throwing off the ANBU, he stood up and focused on the fight in front of him, one he didn’t participate in himself but was still his to fight.
Orochimaru had ceased all movement, shock and near horror written over his face. Totsuka no Tsurugi, something he would sacrifice everything for if it meant it would be his to wield was controlled by Uchiha Itachi, the one he craved for so much. Susa-no-O came closer towards him but desperation overtook him since he knew everything there was to know about the ethereal fighter and his armour. He knew his Kusanagi wouldn’t be able to pierce that shield but he wanted to cry out in anguish as he saw the Totsuka come closer. He didn’t want to die like this, not with his soul forever being trapped in an illusion. Moving fast, he threw himself at Itachi, his Kusanagi posed for attack but before he could get to striking-distance, a sword rammed itself in his chest. The serpent was reduced to dust and he hung in mid-air, only held up by the Totsuka.
Itachi closed his eyes, making Susa-no-O disappear and Orochimaru fell to the ground, not even bothering to stop the blood flowing out of his chest. He walked closer, knowing that after the attack with Totsuka, Orochimaru wouldn’t be able to attack anymore and was simply waiting to die and have his soul be deceived for eternity.
Orochimaru laughed bitterly as he noticed Itachi, his body nearly paralyzed. “All my efforts gone to waste… What a coincidence that my desired vessel is the one to kill me with the one thing I’ve searched all the Countries for. I will forever regret not taking your body sooner. Itachi-kun.” Itachi snapped his neck, glad that Orochimaru was gone from this world.
“Burn his body?” Tokage asked. He had to admit that he was in awe of his captain after seeing him in this battle against a Sannin no less.
Itachi kept kneeling, moving his body so Orochimaru was out of sight from other glances and grabbed his hand, snatching a ring off of a cold finger. “Burn it.”
He walked away and went to check the state of his team. There were four casualties, none that Itachi had ever been on a team with since they were regular ANBU. Tsunade-sama would be glad to hear that her former team-mate was defeated. At least one threat against Konoha taken care off. He noticed the one that had nearly caused him to be killed and stopped in front of him.
“This was your last mission as an ANBU. Expect to be discharged as we arrive back in Konoha.” Without any further words of explanation he walked away towards the small clearing a few metres further and gazed at the sky. He twirled the ring in his pocket around in his hand, knowing well what it stood for. Orochimaru had been wearing the ring six years ago, the first time he had attacked Itachi. He breathed in the smell of blood and death and closed his eyes. This could be the ticket out for him and Neji. He formed a fist, the ring tightly enclosed.
[-]
Neji stopped running as he saw a figure standing up, walking from under the foliage. Momentarily closing his eyes, he breathed a sigh of relief. He made it. His feet started moving again, hurrying him towards Itachi and wrapped his arms around him. The week it had taken Itachi and his team to take out the whole of Otogakure, he had spent the first three days worrying sick, mulling over the different scenarios in his head and the other four on a mission which unfortunately was just B-ranked and therefore didn’t help as a distraction. He had gotten back only fifteen minutes ago and found Konoha in a quiet celebration, the entire village buzzing with the news: Orochimaru was defeated. This didn’t stop him from worrying and since it was an ANBU-mission, not too many details would be known, especially not if among the known casualties was Uchiha Itachi. All he did was come straight here near the river, hoping to found himself in his current position.
“You made it,” Neji said idly, his voice muffled since his face was pressed against Itachi’s chest. Itachi wrapped his own arms around the smaller frame, his hands quickly making hand-signs. Neji knew this jutsu all too well and just kept holding on. Not a second later, they found themselves in the forest around Konoha, high up in a tree.
“We’ll have more privacy here,” Itachi commented. He picked up Neji and sat them down, leaning against the tree trunk. He pulled Neji against him as close as humanly possible and held him in a firm grip, needing this moment to let go of all the pressure after this mission. Neji just sat still, he himself also experiencing a delicate mixture of adrenalin, stress and frustration in those first private moments after a particularly intense mission. He let his hand rake through Itachi’s hair, knowing that no matter what he said now, it wouldn’t matter. After a few minutes, the grip loosened a bit and Itachi let his head fall back, tiredly staring at Neji. He got a tender smile in return and softly grabbed Neji’s chin, bringing their heads closer together and giving him a kiss.
“I made it.” Neji’s smile only widened. Itachi took off Neji’s hair tie and twisted the ends around his fingers. “I recommended you to ANBU Core.”
Neji frowned as he heard this. “Why?”
“Because you’re one of the only people I would trust in battle. An ANBU on the mission nearly killed me because he thought he was rescuing me or something. I don’t know and I don’t care but I need people in my team I can trust and who can think ahead. If you don’t want in, you can always refuse.”
Neji’s mouth fell open. ANBU Core. It was common knowledge amongst the shinobi that you could only get in if you were one of the best and a member needed to recommend you. They were given the dirtiest jobs, the ones you would find no report of. And they were the highest rank any shinobi could reach apart from becoming the Hokage, since their missions demanded the absolute maximum both physically and mentally, no matter how good you were in the first place. The ultimate challenge in this line of business, sort of speak.
“When will they approach me? Didn’t they find it strange that you recommended me?”
“Depending on the others’ decision you will hear something in about a week or so. And your genius is well-known. I heard that regular ANBU was already considering you.” Itachi searched Neji’s face to see how he took the information. Naturally, he hoped Neji would become ANBU Core alongside him because every word he’d said was true: he wanted to work with someone he could trust, someone that wouldn’t get them both killed because of a flawed thought-process. He had rarely ended up injured after an ANBU Core-mission, a rarity in itself but deducting from this that he was invincible would be foolish. And he was honestly convinced that Neji would be ready for it, otherwise he would never have recommended him. Admittedly, part of him rejoiced at the thought of being able to spend even more time with Neji but it was still a minor factor.
“Think about it wisely. I’m sure you’ve heard the rumours about how shinobi turn mad after a few years.”
Neji nodded. “I know. But… I think I’ll accept the offer.” The more he thought about it, the more appealing it sounded. He was never one to shy away from a challenge and his ambition had always exceeded the normal standard. Most would be satisfied with the Jounin-Rank but Neji had never intended to stop there.
“Yes, I want to do it.” Itachi had a tiny smile on his lips.
“I’ll let you know something as soon as I hear what is decided.” Neji rested his head on his shoulder and placed a hand on Itachi’s chest, right over his heart and felt it beating. Itachi let a hand slip into his pocket, briefly touching the piece of jewellery hidden in there. I’ll keep you near to me and refuse to let go, I swear. No one else will ever touch you as you let me.
[-]
“Hyūga Neji?” Neji turned around and saw an ANBU waiting, the trademark tattoo on an uncovered arm, only this was lined with red, indicating his status as ANBU Core. “Could you come with me?”
Neji nodded and they took off, bringing them closer to Hokage Tower. They entered the building but instead of climbing the stairs, they went to the lower levels. He was led into a room where three more ANBU Core were waiting. The room had no natural light, only a flaring TL-light which drenched everything in an atmosphere of hostility. Perhaps the power and intimidation oozing off the others was more to blame for this. He realized that this was a little but final test. If he would show any discomfort already, he could forget about an invitation.
“Your name?”
“Hyūga Neji.”
“Age?”
“Sixteen.”
“Number of S-Rank missions?”
“Fifteen.”
“How much of them solo?”
“Six.”
“How many people killed?” Neji wanted to smirk. This question was a trap, he knew. He should be lucky that he so easily recognized it since this was yet another test. They wanted to know how much emotional involvement he had with the people he had to kill, indirectly wanted to find out if he could still remember the face of everyone he had killed.
“My guess is about a hundred.” A safe answer, and honest as well. There was no point in remembering everyone since it would only become a burden. As a Jounin, it was fairly easy to do so since the people they killed were the stereotypical “villains”, all having done enough harm to justify their death. As an ANBU Core, these reasons would probably be a lot hazier, making it harder to forget the faces. But it was impossible to predict his own reaction to killing the more innocent until he had experienced an ANBU Core mission himself. The people around him could only gauge how he had handled his previous, more standard missions and judge whether he was fit to join.
“You realize it is rare for someone so young to receive an invitation for ANBU Core? If one of our most respected members hadn’t recommended you, you wouldn’t be sitting here.”
Neji nodded, not in the least surprised that they thought so highly of Itachi.
“ANBU Core is ruthless and you will not always be given a reason for a mission. You will be required to kill both shinobi and civilians. And there is no place for mercy. Your conscience can be screaming at you if you need to kill a child but you will kill it.” Even children can pose a threat? Neji briefly wondered how that was possible but knew he couldn’t show any hesitance or doubt. He wanted to join ANBU Core, he wanted another challenge. Perhaps it was disturbing to perceive killing the seemingly innocent as a challenge but he would have to change his thought-process in any case if he did get in. Yes, a child can pose a threat.
“Understood.” Silence stretched on and Neji was careful not to show any weakness.
The leader heaved a sigh. “You will have to complete a training of three months. If it becomes clear that you lack the strength, you won’t become one of our members. If you are strong enough, you will receive your mask after these three months.” Neji once again nodded.
“The one that recommended you told us you two often train together and therefore we have chosen him as your mentor. Uchiha Itachi will train you physically and mentally through his Sharingan. His illusions will simulate realistic missions and help you prepare. You are free to tell people about this invitation but I think you realize that it’s best that not too many people know. Do not disappoint us, Hyūga-kun.”
“Hai.”
“Dismissed.” Neji bowed respectfully and left the room, letting a wide smile grace his lips since the hallway was flooded in darkness. The training would be very hard but knowing that Itachi would be the one helping him through made it a whole lot better already.
[-]
Shikamaru looked up from his plate, frowning as he saw Chōji and Ino acting too much like newlyweds in the middle of the barbecue-house. Hell, Chōji wasn’t even eating, so consumed in his “embrace” with Ino. Although he would never admit it out loud, seeing them so happy as a couple only made him miss Temari more. But in two weeks, she needs to come here for three months. Better than nothing.
Diverting his attention towards his surroundings, he hoped to find something that would distract him from the couple sitting across from him. As if the gods granted him mercy, Team Gai just walked past them, luckily without their annoyingly loud sensei. Miniature-Gai was bad enough on his own.
“Oi, Neji.” White eyes stared back at him and Shikamaru waved his hand in a beckoning motion, sliding over in his seat to make room for the three newcomers. Neji sat down next to him, elegant as usual. Shikamaru briefly thought back to the moment when he had seem him together with Uchiha Itachi. Not so elegant then, eh?
“Any missions coming up?” He saw Neji looking around perceptively before leaning towards him so he could whisper something in his ear.
“I got an invitation for ANBU Core.” Shikamaru’s eyes widened as he heard this. Few got in and even fewer at the age of sixteen. He could honestly say that this was something his brain hadn’t calculated in the options, although if he had just taken more into account that Itachi was a member of this elite…
“Congrats. First mission coming up soon?” Neji shook his head, leaning back in his sat.
“First a training of three months.”
“What are you talking about, Neji?” Tenten’s voice interrupted them. She peered at the two of them suspiciously from across the table, snatching the sake-bottle away before Lee got sight of it.
“A potentially new training-programme for new Jounin,” Neji lied smoothly.
“I heard it’s going to be very hard and deep, ne Neji?” Shikamaru smirked.
“Let’s see how much that vile woman of yours will like you if a certain muscle doesn’t work anymore, ne Shikamaru?” Neji whispered under his breath. Both knew it wasn’t an idle threat since Neji had temporarily blocked the tenketsu just above Kiba’s crotch after Neji got wind of his interest in Hinata.
“Meh.” Shikamaru leaned his head on his hand and looked outside. He wanted to laugh as he saw Uchiha Itachi approaching with a deep frown on his face as a horde of girls followed after him. He looked back at Neji, certain that he saw it too and snorted a laugh as he saw narrowed eyes and near murder-intent radiating off of him.
“Troublesome?”
“Very…”
[-]
The shock on Hiashi’s face was clear. “You are invited into ANBU Core?” he asked in confirmation.
Neji wanted to smirk at this little victory. “Hai, Hiashi-sama.” Those five months he knew Itachi had made him recognize his own strength again and it felt wonderful. He never forgot about his never-ending duty towards the Sōke but these brief moments made it at the least more bearable.
“Leave,” Hiashi ordered. Neji obediently sat up and slid the door closed behind him.
Hiashi stared after him, his head hanging down as he stared at his hands. No matter what he did, Neji kept slipping out of them.
Neji sped towards the outskirts of the village and entered the forest, searching for the tree he had last met up with Itachi. Both would be leaving on separate missions tomorrow so they had promised to meet here again. Itachi was already there and Neji kneeled down next to him. It was still clearly visible that he was satisfied with himself and it made Itachi curious.
“What happened?” Neji leaned against him, regretting that he hadn’t put on warmer clothes. Winter in Konoha was already fast-approaching.
“I told Hiashi-sama that I got asked into ANBU Core. He was so surprised.” Itachi wrapped an arm around his shoulders, pulling him closer.
“Did he hurt you?”
Neji shook his head. “No. I think he felt like I have grown above him.”
Itachi smirked, happy that Neji finally realized this himself. “You’re no longer scared of him,” he said as if in conclusion.
“No, I’m not.” Neji was surprised that it came out so easily but it was once more a confirmation of the truth.
“That’s good.”
[-]
Itachi sat on top of an abandoned look-out post near Konoha, overlooking the bustling village. Sometimes he detested this place more than anything and still, it was home.
Someone landed next to him, remaining standing. “It’s been a long time, Itachi-kun.” Itachi knew who it was. How could he forget such a chakra-signature? It was ingrained in his memory, had been for seven years already.
“It has, Madara-san.” He straightened and looked at the man, a fellow Uchiha and co-founder of Konohagakure. And now the true leader of Akatsuki. Itachi had chosen not to tell this to anybody but Madara had told him so himself all those years ago and Itachi had no reason to doubt him.
“I hope you know why I came here.”
Itachi nodded. Even if he hadn’t possessed the Sharingan, he would still remember that night in vivid detail. The night Madara had approached him for the first time, bluntly telling him who he was and that his cousin was planning to kill the Uchiha-clan. As a sign of proof, he had let Itachi confront Shishui, bluntly asking about his plans. Shishui had been surprised but then had confessed, offered him to choose his side. That same night Itachi killed him, drowned him in the river and made it look like a suicide and thereby obtaining Mangekyō Sharingan. Part of him still wondered if he had done the right thing. He hated the Uchiha-clan himself and the past few years would perhaps have been easier on him if he didn’t have his family constantly breathing down his neck. The other part of him sighed that it was of no use to reminisce about the past, the one thing in life which could never be undone.
“Orochimaru’s dead.”
Madara smiled, his black hair swaying in the wind. “I believe we have you to thank for that.”
Itachi retrieved the ring he had snatched off of Orochimaru’s finger from his pocket and held it up so Madara could see it.
“You know the invitation to Akatsuki still counts? That ring could belong rightfully on your finger.”
Itachi twirled the ring in his fingers. “Do you know of the Hyūga-clan?” he abruptly said.
“Hai. With their precious Byakugan.”
“What do you know about the curse-seal they put on those of their Bunke?”
Madara frowned. It wasn’t like Itachi to be so vague but he decided to go along with it. “When activated, it destroys their brain-cells, rendering their Byakugan useless. Also used to keep them in line.”
“Can you remove it?”
Madara sighed, fed up with this pointlessness. “Talk, Itachi-kun.”
“Hyūga Neji. He’s Bunke and will be married off next year but I would rather kill him myself than to see that happen.”
“And you want us to remove the curse-seal.” Itachi nodded.
“It will come at a price.”
“We both have to join Akatsuki.” While he wasn’t sure that Neji could be convinced as to go that far, he still saw it as their only option to remain together and without interference of his clan. He had come up with this scenario long before rescuing Neji in the river those months ago.
“I can’t guarantee him a ring but the more, the merrier,” Madara sneered. “I will have to do some research first but I’ll let you know something. But how long will it last then before you join us, if you even do?”
“A year and a half. The Hyūga-clan usually marries off its relatives not long after their eighteenth birthday. But if you can’t remove his curse-seal, I’m not joining.”
“I have patience. You will become a member of Akatsuki eventually, I have no doubt about that. See you in a few weeks, Itachi-kun.” Madara turned around but then looked back over his shoulders.
“Why him though?”
“Because he’s like me.” The unspoken message was clear; Hyūga Neji was a prodigy, discovered too soon and now struggling with his bindings. Sounds promising. Madara understood that the relation Itachi had with him went beyond friendship and made a mental note to have a member appointed to do some investigation on the boy. He just hoped the Hyūga was as good as Itachi thought he was.
Itachi looked back at Konoha. If he had to leave his home for Neji, he wouldn’t hesitate. It was already becoming too small for him, for them. Neji would eventually realize this as well.

“And are you planning to ever join?”
“Not without you.” Neji let out a laugh, thinking it was meant jokingly but had he seen Itachi’s face, he would have seen the stern determination in his eyes.
