Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: This chapter is 3rd person point-of-view. Normally it drives me nuts to change POV’s in a story, but this was important and Naruto promised me that my head wouldn’t explode if I put a second POV in this story. I’m not sure he’s right, but I’ll trust him for now. Also, the chapter is kind of short and there’s nothing but plot, sorry to anyone who wanted more, but plot has always been more important to me.
So, I just thought I’d point out that I had originally made Gaara as the bad guy and as someone Sasuke knew. I made it Pein, who I had meant to make it all along. I write with kids around me, fighting with each other, and sometimes my concentration slips. If you notice something that doesn’t jive like that – point it out to me. I’ll make it better. :)
No snow in the story yet, so it can’t be winter. Sasuke’s in school though, so I’m going to put the time frame here about September. I don’t know if that will ever be important, but just so you know.
Review Responses:
Charmpit: I’m so glad you still like it. The next few chapters are a little bit of background info and more SasuNaru bonding. Hopefully people don’t get too bored with it.
Ero Sennin: I used to roam coffee shops and tattoo parlors myself before my kids started eating up all my money. I used to go to a shop in Bismarck, ND (where I went to college) that had open mic night and it was run by a bunch of tattooed, pierced freaks (my brethren). They always had candles on the table and one night a girl from Germany decided to sing Mr. Big’s To Be With You and we all grabbed the candles off the table to use in place of lighters and sang along. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun in my life. I’m glad you liked my original stuff. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to e-mail me with them.
On to the story!
Naruto sighed as they boarded the bus. The trip through this state to the next was supposed to be quick. According to the map it should only have taken 4 hours from where they entered the state to where they were leaving it. If he had known what was going to happen, he would have turned Hinata down. It wasn’t that he didn’t like Sasuke and wasn’t happy getting to know him. He was. He loved the dark haired, punk artist. The problem was the fact that every time he fell in love something happened. Last time the guy had turned out to be a member of a rival band out to screw over his band due to their increasing popularity.
Hinata smiled softly. She could see the torment in Naruto’s eyes. She sat down next to him. “If it makes you feel any better, I don’t think he has any negative intentions. He seemed to genuinely care about you.”
Naruto smiled softly. “That’s what makes it worse. I hate thinking that he’ll hurt me but worse that I might actually hurt this one. You know how I get. I’m a little possessive and I hate that I won’t be able to see Sasuke all the time.”
Hinata laughed as Naruto jumped when his cell rang. “Shit.” He cursed as he flipped the screen open. It was Sasuke. He smiled as he answered even though he said, “It’s only been 25 minutes you freak.”
The tone of Sasuke’s voice had Naruto on edge. “Wait, wait. Slow down, Sas,” Naruto wanted nothing more than to ease the pain in the voice but he couldn’t understand what Sasuke was telling him. “Start again and go slow.”
Sasuke took a deep breath before saying, “I said my father is up to something and he has to know about you because he made a point of requesting my presence the day of the show. Keep your manager informed so that nothing happens to that gig. I can’t really talk right now, because I’m on my way to my dad to find out what the fuck is going on. Just make sure that you don’t let anything happen to that gig. If something happens because of my father, I’ll leave your life forever. Just, I’ll tell you all about my family as soon as I can. I love you. Bye.”
Naruto looked at his phone. Sasuke had hung up just as fast as he had called. Hinata looked at Naruto. “What’s wrong?” She was concerned, just like the rest of the band. They kept trying to keep him from doing stupid things like the time he decided the world would be better without him and had tried to kill himself or the time he decided he needed sleeping pills to make it through a night and then followed up with alcohol.
Naruto shook his head. “Sorry, Hinata. I didn’t mean to worry you. We need to get a hold of Yamato. Sasuke says his dad is up to something and he might try to ruin our LA gig.”
Hinata blinked. Did she just hear that correctly? “Sasuke’s father is going to ruin our show? Why?”
Naruto shrugged, more worried about the sound of desperation and fright in Sasuke’s voice than the show itself. “I don’t know. Sasuke said he would tell me all about his family later. He sounded pretty scared.”
Kiba had been listening quietly. “I’ll let him tell you about his family, but I’ll tell you that his father is power and rich. He could probably affect our gig if we don’t act fast. Get Yamato on the phone. I’ll talk to him.”
Naruto sighed. He closed his eyes knowing his band was going to have to take care of him yet again. He drifted into a very uneventful sleep, but not before hearing Ten-Ten whisper, “I’m worried about Naru.”
‘Wow’ he thought, ‘this is a fancy ass warehouse’. “Um, I saw that you needed a vocalist/guitarist?” Naruto’s voice faltered just a bit. He’d never had much luck at auditions and his eternal optimism was starting to wane just a bit.
The girl with short brown hair and white contacts smiled at him, blushing slightly. She stuttered a little as she said, “Y-Y-Yes. Um, yeah so Kiba will want to talk with you.” She pressed her fingers together a little bit. “I’m Hinata and Ten-Ten is around here somewhere.” She took in his appearance, appreciating the strong body and good looks. His style was his own. She sighed. She knew her luck. “You’re gay huh?”
He laughed and nodded. “I didn’t think it was that horribly obvious.”
She laughed with him. “It’s not. I just seem to fall for gays. I thought you were hot so you had to be gay, you see.”
“Here for the vocalist audition?” Naruto turned to the sound of the voice. It belonged to a good looking guy with shaggy brown hair. He had triangle tattoos on his cheeks and a puppy trailing him. “I’m Kiba and this is Akamaru. He stays with my mom when we play, but he helps me pick who’s in the band. That,” he indicated Hinata, “is our bassist. Ten-Ten is our lead guitar and I do drums. We need someone who can write well, has a good voice, and can scratch out rhythm guitar.”
Naruto closed his eyes and centered himself. “I hope you don’t mind that I audition with a cover. I have songs, but I’m a little stingy with them.”
Kiba smiled. He really liked this guy. “Understandable. If we like ya though, you’ll have to do an original for us.”
Naruto chuckled. “Can do.” He went over to the microphone set up on a small stage. “Okay. I’m going to do ‘Kill the Poor’ by The Dead Kennedys.” Naruto grabbed his guitar and started playing while singing.
“The sun beams down on a brand new day
No more welfare tax to pay
Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light
Jobless millions whisked away
At last we have more room to play
All systems go to kill the poor tonight
Gonna
Kill kill kill kill Kill the poor:Tonight”
Kiba stopped Naruto there. “Can I hear some of your original lyrics? You have the kind of voice I’m looking for.”
Naruto smiled. He was almost in. This was it. He was so close to his dream he could taste it. He nodded. “This is called ‘Drown in Nyquil’.”
“Don’t know what’s inside.
Fuck the sunshine pride.
Pain never ends until I swallow you again.
Green is the color of my God.
My fever dies and my nose stops running.
Drown in Nyquil
Finally feeling tranquil.”
He sighed. That song was so hard to sing, but it was almost all true. He’d been addicted to Nyquil after a particularly bad time in his life. He looked up at the group before the stage, not sure if he should continue. Kiba shook his head and motioned him down. “Fuck,” Naruto thought, “Blew it again.”
Naruto packed up his guitar and walked over to the group. “Well?” He asked, not certain that he wanted to hear the answer.
Kiba smiled. “That was fucked up, man, but I liked it.”
Naruto nodded. “That’s okay. I understand. I mean,” He stopped and turned back to Kiba. “Wait, you liked it?”
Kiba laughed and clapped Naruto on the back. “Yeah, I really liked it. I just want to know if that’s true.”
Naruto nodded. “Look, I’ll be honest with you guys. If you want me you need to know about my past. I don’t want anything coming up as a surprise if we finally make it big and the press gets this information.”
Kiba nodded. “Let me get Ten-Ten in here and we’ll talk about it.” Kiba came back with a girl with buns in her hair. She was dressed a little like a tomboy, but she looked like a good person to Naruto.
Naruto sighed. “All right. So, first thing to know, I’m gay. Second thing to know, most of my relationships have been poisonous. I wrote ‘Drown in Nyquil’ after my first boyfriend sold me when I was 15 to a drug dealer in payment for dope he couldn’t afford. I used Nyquil to self medicate and try to keep the pain from being passed around as a chew toy for drug lords. I never wanted to get into harder drugs because then I’d be the men using me.”
He paused and let his words sink in before continuing. “I finally found a police officer who believed my story and freed me. He was really good and got me out of foster care. He took me to his house and raised me as his own. He was a really good man, but he died when I was 16. He was killed in the line of duty. After his death, I found myself on the street.”
“I met a guy who promised me a good life, but when I moved in with him, the abuse started. He was 20 years older than I was, but he forced me to do things I wouldn’t wish upon my worst enemy. I ran away and this is where life finds me. I bounce from place to place on the street because anything is better than what I had at that home.”
Kiba couldn’t believe his ears. He’d been brought up in a good home with loving parents. Still, the man standing before him had an almost eternal sunshine factor about him. “We don’t care about your past, other than that you’ve been hurt.”
Naruto smiled. They hadn’t judged him. They wanted him in the band. They said they liked him and his past didn’t matter. The fact that he was homeless wasn’t important to them. “Thank you.”
Kiba clapped him on the shoulder. “No big, but I want you to come home with me. I can’t have a member of my band living on the streets. It’s not safe for you.”
Naruto laughed. “I can’t believe my luck. Thank you so much!” Naruto had hugged the man then. He couldn’t help himself.
Living with Kiba had been great and his family had accepted Naruto with open arms. He hadn’t wanted for anything and Kiba became like a brother. The entire band watched over Naruto. If someone looked like they had bad intentions for Naruto, they would make sure the shit never got to Naruto. Kiba had threatened his share of assholes away from the blond. Still some had gotten through. The guy who had convinced Naruto that he wasn’t smart enough to sing in a band and the one who was just using Naruto to try and screw up their success were proof.
Kiba growled as he turned to Ten-Ten. “I know Sasuke is a good guy. I know he’s not one of those demons that just seem to be drawn to Naruto, but unfortunately it seems like maybe his family might be.”
Ten-Ten nodded. “I’m worried about Naruto’s health. Whenever he cries, it seems like trouble follows. I think the universe doesn’t want him to be happy. I’m going to fight for his happiness though. If I weren’t a lesbian and he weren’t a gay guy, I’d probably want to date him.”
Hinata sat quietly by Naruto, stroking the blond’s hair as he slept. She had known right away that he was gay, but that didn’t stop her from loving him. “I promised him once, when we were alone that I’d keep him regardless of what happened in the band. I meant it and I know you both feel the same way.” Getting nods from both of them she continued, “Still, I know Naruto would not let himself rest if something happened to the band. So, we need to stop whatever is supposed to be happening to this show. What did Yamato say when you told him.”
Kiba shrugged. “He told me that he had people he could have look into it. He promised he would call back tomorrow sometime. He was going to run an investigation into Uchiha Sasuke and his family.” Kiba sighed and looked at Hinata holding Naruto. “He’s going to be upset about it.”
Hinata nodded. “I know. I’ll stay with him. It will help if Sasuke keeps talking to him, though. I know that Naruto is head over heels for this one. If the tear sliding down Sasuke’s cheek as we left is any indication, Sasuke likes Naruto just as much.”
Kiba sighed. “I don’t think Naruto’s told this guy anything about his past. I think that he needs to do that. If Sasuke’s family is this crazy, they might try to use that to get him to leave Naruto. I just wish I knew why we were being targeted.”
Naruto stirred when his phone began to ring. Hinata pulled it out and looked. It was Sasuke. Hinata answered, “Hello, Sasuke?”
“Yeah,” Sasuke answered, “Where’s Naruto?”
Hinata sighed. “Sleeping, peacefully for once. Look, Sasuke, we’ve been talking and we really think you are good for Naruto. We’ve got people looking into your family, but I think you need to tell us everything…especially Naruto.”
There was silence for a minute. “I know. I just found out that my father has a side business that I wasn’t aware of. It’s this business that needs to be watched. Have any of you done anything illegal in the past? I’m pretty sure they are going to try to use that kind of information against you. I don’t want Naruto hurt.”
Naruto rubbed his eyes. Hinata was talking to someone on his phone. He heard her say Sasuke. He sat straight up, a huge smile on his face and grabbed the phone from Hinata with a kiss. “Sasuke,” he said excitedly. His band mates couldn’t help but smile at the infectious look of joy on Naruto’s face.
Sasuke kept as much of the bad information as possible from Naruto. He only wanted to keep the man happy for now. “Hey, Naru,” Sasuke said quietly.
“What?” Naruto asked, expecting a joke or something.
“I’m driving right now, down to Minneapolis. Where are you staying?” Sasuke laughed when Naruto had to ask the band for the information. “Right, on 4th. I’ll be there in a few hours and you should be there in a few minutes.”
Naruto smiled as he hung up. “Sasuke’s going to meet us here. Maybe he has something to tell us. Maybe he just missed me.”
