Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
A/N: All right, I think it is time I warned you that this story is a very, very, very slight crossover. All I did was borrow two characters from another series because making up new characters for me is a very long and tedious task. It could take months to finalize any ideas and backgrounds for people I create. This time, I just took the easy route and grabbed these two who fit what I needed; trust me, they were perfect for the job.
Also I apologize if I got them out of character. I tried to remember what they’re like (I haven’t watched the show in a while) and hopefully I wasn’t too far off. Sorry I’m rambling, just a little tired. Anyway, I’m thinking one more chapter on this one. Not 100% sure on that yet, but we’ll have to see I guess. Please enjoy and review!! I love reviewers!! If I could, for every person that reviewed, I would personally be their sex slave for a week!!! That’s how much I love you all! (or it shows how desperate I am for sex, depending on how you look at it XD)
The Master
Fuck. He had fucked up… badly; or was it that he was fucked? It sure seemed like it, being shackled and caged. The tight muzzle around his face kept his mouth firmly shut; a harness was wrapped about his torso, which was chained close to the wall. He was in a tiny kennel at the Inuzuka compound, where they had the appropriate facilities for dogs that had “gone feral.”
Shikamaru guessed that’s exactly what had happened to him. He’d attacked people, even his own father! At the time, he hadn’t really cared who he was mauling and that just added to his current guilt. He had liked the power that had come to him. It made him arrogant and it had felt so… good. It was hard for him to fully describe the feeling of it, but it had been enough that he didn’t question where the power had come from. He had just wanted to keep it.
The others’ safety hadn’t really crossed his mind at the time; he was only after the fox. The Nara knew that if they hadn’t provoked him, he would have done barely any damage to the blonde and simply would have taken him away to this “master” that had been talking to him. Though, perhaps he would have attacked everyone, anyway. It was hard to tell, given the fact that Shikamaru had let himself go under the control of the supposed master. He remembered the voice and fleeting emotions, but he wished he could forget the taste of human blood.
The flavor was still on his tongue and he feared he would never be rid of it. In a way, he didn’t want it to go away; the coppery taste was a constant reminder of what he’d done.
Shikamaru released a long breath through his nose, looking at the floor between his feet. He didn’t know what his fate would be now. Maybe they’d keep him locked up like this for a few days before moving him back to the Anbu Research Lab, where he’d probably remain for the rest of his life. No one could trust a dog that had attacked people without proper motivation and animals that do what he did were usually put down.
His fur ruffled a bit at the shiver that ran down his spine.
The two larger dogs sitting by the door to the kennel glanced back at him a moment. Their eyes held no sympathy or sadness for the Nara, in fact they looked pissed. Shikamaru couldn’t blame them, really. It was actions like his that gave strong canines a bad name.
Several long moments passed in relative silence. Once in a while a dog would bark somewhere around him, the sound echoing around the hall of the high security area.
A certain noise caught his attention, and that of his guards. They turned their heads the same direction as the steady sounds of footsteps neared. The footfalls were soft and steady and didn’t give the Nara any clue as to who it was.
The two canines at the door stared down the hall, and the black dog within the kennel cocked his head to the side in curiosity as their ears slowly bent back onto their heads, which lowered close to the ground and their tails coming to rest firmly between their legs.
They were submitting… to someone superior. He’d never seen any of the Inuzuka dogs act like that before, though.
Slowly, his guards crawled away, backing off from their post as the person approached the kennel.
Shikamaru’s eyes widened slightly at the sight of the other. He was draped in white silk; patterns of red speckled the sleeves and collar of his kimono. Strong-looking armor covered his chest, with a few deadly spikes shooting up here and there, and a bright yellow and purple sash was tied tightly around his waist. A long trail of fur was wrapped around a shoulder, immediately drawing attention to the silver hair falling beautifully around his face. Two lavender slashes adorned each cheek and the black dog could just barely see a violet colored crescent moon-shaped mark on his forehead, slightly hidden by silver bangs. A tinge of red sat above soft gold eyes, looking down at him with a cold and emotionless stare.
He swallowed hard, immediately lowering his gaze. ‘Master.’ This creature standing before him was not human; he could feel the raw power slowly oozing from his body and that coupled with his scent relayed only one message to his mind, ‘He could kill you in an instant.’ That’s why Shikamaru knew this being was his master, or more accurately the alpha, and always had been, which was probably why he had been so terrified of him before.
Now those eyes no longer sent fearful shivers down his spine. It was merely the gaze of his lord and master; if he was truthful, things would be fine.
His dark orbs rose a bit when he saw a pale hand move to the door of his kennel. A seal had been placed on the outside, but Shikamaru saw a burst of blue flames and the paper falling from the metal as the door opened. His master walked inside and stood before him.
Shikamaru instinctively bowed his head, the chains rustling a bit at the movement. The same pale hand was placed just above him and the seals that bound his restraints were eliminated by that mysterious blue fire causing the manacles to fall from his body with loud clanking noises to the floor.
He looked tentatively up at the alpha, seeing nothing more than an emotionless expression as the being silently turned and left the cage.
The Nara got the distinct feeling to follow, but was concerned about the consequences of such an action. He slowly peeked around the corner into the hallway and saw the two canines that had been posted to watch him were currently cowering at the end of the passage.
The alpha stopped several feet away, sharp golden eyes turning back to the freed dog. “You may stay, if that is what you truly wish,” he said, voice soft yet still sent a pleasant tremor down Shikamaru’s spine. “Though I do not know why you would want to stay with humans who will never trust you again.” A small flash of resentment shone through his gaze before he continued down the hall.
Shikamaru tensed a moment and then trotted to catch up with his alpha. It seemed that his instincts were far more expressive in this canine form and they told him not to upset the creature who had just saved him from probably years of isolation.
He walked at a steady pace, respectively behind the silver-haired lord. They emerged into the late afternoon sunlight and began on a path around the heart of the village, which snaked just inside forests and brought them to the top of the Hokage Monument. It was here the alpha stopped, looking over the village as if considering something, though his face remained emotionless. Shikamaru did not stand directly beside the golden eyed lord, but close enough that he too could gaze out at Konoha.
He knew his alpha was right; nobody would trust him if he stayed in the village. If he had the audacity to maul his own father, who would ever look on such a creature for anything? Choosing to remain here would do nothing but cause him the ultimate loneliness and separation from the people he once considered to be friends. They would never see Shikamaru as a friend again, especially Shino and Kiba. He could see Naruto forgiving him eventually, but he knew the Aburame would kill him if he neared the blonde and the Inuzuka would beat him to a pulp for hurting his beloved dog. Leaving with this lord would be for his best interests.
Suddenly, the silver haired being moved, quickly walking away and Shikamaru was eager to follow. Heavy storm clouds began heading in the direction of the village and his sensitive nose picked up a soft scent of rain as a roll of thunder roared in his ears.
It was almost as if his lord had made sure the Nara didn’t have any doubts and gave him one last chance to change his mind.
A flash of lightning flickered over their heads, but he didn’t flinch, knowing that as long as he was with the alpha he’d be all right.
They walked for some time, putting more and more distance between them and Konoha. The sun was half-way hidden behind the horizon when they entered a clearing in the dense forest they had traveled in. A small river ran through the little meadow and someone dressed in red was lying on its bank. He was on his side, hair long and more of a white color with barely there tinges of silver floating amongst the locks. His skin held no marks, but his eyes were almost the same color as the alpha, though they were a bit softer and held much more emotion.
The being clad in red stood, stretching his arms above him, causing white ears atop his head to flicker back a moment and shot Shikamaru’s alpha a glare.
“Took ya long enough, Sesshomaru,” he said, voice a little whiny.
The silver haired being walked up to the slightly shorter other. “Watch your tone, Inuyasha,” he warned. “I thought you would have lost this attitude while I was retrieving the subject.”
He snorted. “Probably woulda worked if ya’d gotten back sooner.”
Shikamaru was quite shocked at this newcomer’s insolence toward the alpha. He sniffed the air and immediately located the new scent. There were definite traces of human laced within a smell that was surprisingly similar to the silver haired being.
“This impatience you have will get you killed some day, little brother,” his alpha, or Sesshomaru, almost sneered.
“Yeah, yeah.” Inuyasha rolled his eyes before giving the black dog a steady glare. “You know this Pein guy ain’t gonna be happy about this.”
A light scowl touched Sesshomaru’s features. “He is not like you. Fortunately, he understands that this task is a difficult one; at least we won’t be returning empty handed.”
“Speaking of which,” the white-haired being commented, stretching his legs, “we’d better get goin’ if we’re gonna get there before… ya know.” He nodded toward the dog.
Shikamaru cocked his head at the motion. Before what?
The alpha made a quiet remark about impatient brothers, then turned to the Nara. His golden gaze looked into his dark orbs as he spoke. “Keep up if you do not wish to be left behind,” he stated.
As soon as the words left his lips, Shikamaru felt that familiar power begin to fill him again. It wasn’t as much as before, but he inhaled deeply, welcoming it into his body like a miracle drug.
The two light haired beings then took off into the forest, the dog following suit. He was able to pass Inuyasha, who didn’t seem to have the same amount of power that Sesshomaru had. He lagged behind, seeming to use most of his strength just to keep the silver-haired lord in view. Shikamaru knew he didn’t have the muscle to pass his alpha, though he never would dare to. He was comfortable being between, seeing that glorious silver mane flowing several feet ahead and hearing the heavy steps of the younger behind.
They ran for a long while. The sun had completely set and a moon barely in its first stages of waning into shadow was slowly rising over them. Shikamaru was starting to have a little difficulty in seeing his alpha running in front of him. He had to relay more and more on his nose as the darkness increased around them.
Finally, Shikamaru burst out of the forest to find Sesshomaru standing on a path, walking up to someone clad in black. He trotted over to the lord, standing behind him and looking up at the cloaked figure with a curious gaze. His eyes widened as he could now see the red clouds decorating the dark robe he wore. ‘Akatsuki.’
The man glanced down at the dog, lightly glaring when his eyes returned to the silver-haired being. “I see you failed.”
“That nine-tailed fox demon you spoke of wasn’t the problem. You could have warned us about those friends the container has,” Sesshomaru almost growled.
The Akatsuki member chuckled. “Oh yes. My apologies, Lord Sesshomaru; I thought demons would have a good chance against another demon but I hadn’t figured on the fox’s container to have friends nearby.”
‘Demons?’ Shikamaru wondered as Inuyasha finally caught up, panting heavily. ‘That’s what these two are?’
The alpha ignored his brother as he spat out quiet and out of breath words about him being too fast. “It would appear that the best way to capture this nine-tailed fox that you wish to possess would be to lead him away from the village and from the people who care for him. It will not be easy.”
The human snorted. “I don’t know why you feel so compelled to give me advice, my lord, seeing as you didn’t bring the fox or any of his comrades with you.”
Inuyasha growled. “Right here, Pein!” he snarled, pointing at Shikamaru. “You can have him!”
This “Pein” person looked a long while at the black dog before speaking again. “Why would I want a mere dog?”
“That is not a dog, Lord Pein,” Sesshomaru stated, before his brother could say anything more, “that is a ninja from the Village Hidden in the Leaves. I have studied him for some time, now, and knew that if I could not retrieve the fox, he would be enough.”
Shifting his feet beneath his robes, the Akatsuki member gazed more fully at the silver-haired lord. “Really? I would assume then that you have an explanation behind this?”
The alpha nodded. His golden eyes glanced at his brother, who caught his look and stared hard at him for a while. Shutting his orbs, Inuyasha sighed heavily. “I need to get some water,” he quietly announced, darting off into the woods.
“Go with him, Shikamaru,” the lord commanded.
The Nara was more than happy to comply, quickly following the younger into the darkness. They found a softly flowing river where the white-haired “demon” began filling a couple water bottles that had been tucked in the sleeves of his kimono.
Shikamaru stepped into the cool stream and started lapping up the refreshing liquid, suddenly realizing how thirsty he was.
“You should feel lucky,” Inuyasha noted, taking a few large gulps of water as the dog backed out of the river. “My hard assed brother rarely turns anybody into a dog these days. That power used to be the way our kind built clans.” He shook his head, long white locks dancing at the movement and his ears bent back a little against his skull. “Now it seems pointless, since it’s just the two of us left.”
Shikamaru cocked his head a little again, wondering why the other was going on like he was. He should be thankful the alpha Sesshomaru allowed him to remain in the clan, what with his disposition and all. At least, that’s what his instincts were telling him.
“C’me on, let’s head back.” Inuyasha turned to the forest but he didn’t run off. Instead he set a relaxing pace through the woods, completely unrushed to return.
Shikamaru was at his side. This person was not an alpha, thus he didn’t need to worry himself too much with the hierarchy at the moment. They traveled in silence, the night filled with nocturnal sounds soothing to the dog as they slowly made their way back to Sesshomaru and Pein.
When they got back on the path, the Akatsuki member had a very eerie smile on his face as the silver-haired demon talked with him.
“…it is a very odd result to the venom he was injected with,” Sesshomaru continued. “Just be sure you or someone you trust is in the room with him once he begins transforming.”
Pein nodded. “Don’t worry, Lord Sesshomaru, I will use this to my full advantage.”
The lord took a step away from the human, as if he couldn’t deal being close to him any longer. “If everything is in order, then we shall take our leave.”
“Very well,” the other replied, bowing respectively. “Safe travels, Lords Sesshomaru and Inuyasha.”
The demons returned the bow, although it was a mere movement of the head instead of the whole upper body. “Good luck with the nine-tailed fox,” Inuyasha said, turning away. “You’re gonna need it!”
Sesshomaru looked down at the black dog standing nearly beside him. “You will stay with Pein,” he commanded. “Do as he says, Shikamaru, for he is your master for the time being.” Without so much as a second glance, the alpha and his brother vanished into the night.
Shikamaru looked up at the human with a curious gaze. He would not disobey his alpha for any reason. Hanging around the murderous band of missing ninja couldn’t be half as bad as the alternative.
“Come, Shikamaru,” Pein ordered, turning in the opposite direction, “there is much to do.”
Without hesitating, the Nara followed the Akatsuki member, grateful for the acceptance he was afraid would never have come to him again.
