Again drained and exhausted, eleven, almost twelve year-old Uzumaki Naruto relaxed his hand and allowed the frayed scroll to slowly roll out of his hand onto the grass as he stared up at the bright blue sky, tinged with a hint of overcast gray. Thoughts of his former days, before the mission wafting around in a seamless manner in his head, Naruto heaved a dramatic sigh.
“My dream! To be the greatest Hokage! Then the whole village will stop disrespecting me and start treating me like I’m somebody! Somebody important!”
‘Was I really so narrow-minded?’
‘Be not a fool, boy. You’re still the same foolish child with an unattainable dream. Do not start thinking otherwise. Although, you have grown in many ways since that night two months ago, you still have much to learn.’
‘And while I’d love to sit and argue to you as to why my dream is attainable, I still haven’t been able to bend water and earth to my will consistently.’
‘Brat. You haven’t been able to do it because you’re an idiot. Any person with half a brain could figure these simple algorithms out. Water is a science, as is wind, fire, earth, and lightning. You simply haven’t figured out the equation, yet. If and/or when you do, be sure to remember it.’
‘Damned Kyuubi . . .’ Naruto grumbled, as the connection to the nine-tailed beast slowly faded away.
So caught up in his musings, he only vaguely noted the trace presence of a familiar chakra signature. One so small and callow, he barely registered it at all.
“Ano . . . Naruto . . . ?”
Having barely noticed the faint whisper of a female’s voice, Naruto turned slightly towards the slowly proceeding wind. “S-Sakura-chan . . .?”
Sakura looked reserved, quiet . . . almost as if she were afraid to speak. And what had been, to Naruto, a mask of annoyance and anger, which was directed at him oftentimes, was now a mask of nervousness and dejection.
“I . . . I wanted to come out here to ask you about something . . .”
The blonde-haired jinchuuriki found a familiar tinge in her eyes, the same insane look that crept into his own visage before Anko had found him alone in the training fields, and had proposed to have him live with her with that wispy, lascivious and promising smirk. It had initially come as a shock, that someone–anyone would be so kind to him. It wasn’t until a week before this mission that she revealed her true reasons behind her kindness.
“You remind me a lot of myself, kid. As a matter of fact, slap some breasts on you, some hair-dye and a bit more feminine luxuria, and you’d be an exact replica of me.”
He had no idea why that frightened and at the same time, fascinated him. But it did. Anko was known for her malign nature and sadistic tendencies, which was one of the reasons she reminded alone and put up a mask of lecherousness to stave off the lingering pain of perpetual loneliness. And as much as Naruto loathed to admit it, he had found a kindred spirit in the woman he had come to regard as an older sister.
The cold grey sky darkened considerably under the pretense of impending rain, giving the world an imposing, depressing spiritual sensation. Naruto allowed a soft smile to appear on his face, and Sakura barely noticed it, the smile was gone before he turned his gaze back to her.
Soupy sky-blue eyes locked onto her expectantly, his mouth moving involuntarily, or was it because she wasn’t paying attention to his words? When he stopped talking, Sakura blinked and asked, “Naruto? How—. How were you able to . . . change . . . ? I mean, I’ve tried to get Sasuke to notice me a lot, and nothing’s working. Help?”
Naruto’s raised eyebrows further discouraged her, but gave the boy a sort of empty purpose, a figurative sense of melancholy. “I think . . . no love worth having, is spent trying to change oneself, however . . . I changed because I have a dream to fulfill. I had no other choice. You say you love Sasuke, right?” at her curt nod, he continued, “Is it because he’s mysterious? Is it because he’s ‘handsome’? Or is it because, deep inside yourself, you’ve realized that the only person you’re suited for is someone who is the exact opposite of yourself?” he asked mysteriously.
“I think it’s the first two.” she said, her tone implying faint annoyance and hope.
Naruto heaved a sigh and shook his head, his eyes drifting back to the sky with a moderated expression. “That . . . doesn’t seem like love, Sakura-chan,” he paused, narrowing his eyes in thought. “Love . . . according to my observations . . . is that feeling you get . . . that speaks volumes about yourself. It’s supposed to be an elation, a feeling of absolute euphoria and happiness that no other can give you. When someone loves someone else, they’re willing to put anything aside to be there for that person . . .”
“Have you ever . . . ?” she ventured.
Naruto looked at her placatingly. “Love is a fickle thing, fleeting and unpredictable; but what you have . . . I don’t know much about it. I’ve not experienced it per say, but I have witnessed it in its many forms. Sasuke isn’t who you believe him to be, and what you need to understand, is that no matter what you do; your actions, who you are, will always be judged–-not by who you’re with—but precisely by what you do.”
Sakura stared at Naruto with a mixture of shock, amazement, awe and envy. ”How does he know the ins and outs of love!? Sasuke’s my one true love! Cha!”
Despite her inner self’s rant, her face fell, and her heart sank deeper into the pit of her stomach. ‘I really . . . don’t love him . . .? Then why?’
Inner Sakura heaved a dramatic sigh. “You really don’t know? Idiot! I can’t believe I’m part of you! Your love’s been misplaced the entire time! Remember that boy who you scorned all those years ago! The one who purposely took a beating for us? He’s the one we’re really after! I can’t believe you forgot!”
‘But, I thought it was someone brave and strong!’ Sakura retorted.
‘Cha, but it wasn’t Sasuke!”
‘Then who?!’ Sakura asked, her patience wearing dangerously thin.
“You’ll have to figure that one out . . . without me . . .” the voice faded slowly, leaving her alone with her own thoughts.

The sun was beginning to set over the horizon, blues and orange hues mixing together into a stark indigo, streaking across the sky, converging at one point; the sunset.
Megrim set into Naruto’s visage, his face contorted in a a slight grimace of pain as an unsettling migraine seared across his mental nerves and stamped his eyes closed. He had been across the point of no return for the past two hours, pushing his limits as he fiercely pushed through his seven variant katas. The dragon stance, the instep, the backbend, the palm thrust, the airting dragon palm, the hand jab, and the leg sweep to roundhouse kick.
He let his leg drop lifelessly, panting for breath as he gained a bit of a foothold on his stances, the form nearly perfected. ‘Not bad, brat. You’re still behind on manipulation.’
‘Whatever.’
‘Do not disrespect me, boy. I’ve got more power in my paw, than you have in your—.’
‘Entire body, yeah. Whatever. I only take your advice because everyone else’s advice is too difficult to follow. Everyone talks in parables. Their words are paradoxical, I can’t understand any of them. Especially the old man Hokage.’
‘My advice to stay silent and observe was useful, yes?’
Naruto heaved a sigh and severed the connection with the annoying bijuu. When had it all started . . . ?
“You should try shutting up, brat!”
Naruto growled and pointed a finger at the offending beast of red, vicious chakra. “Shut up, you bastard fox! I don’t have to listen to you!”
The Kyuubi growled silently, pacing the walls of his cage restlessly. “What if I told you . . . that being more of an observer will help you become Hokage?”
Naruto squinted, forming a frown with his lips as he hummed his thoughts in a dull echo. “I’d say you were crazy! What’s some stupid fox know about becoming Hokage?!”
“Simple, brat. High-ranking officials and leaders always must be able to observe in quiet acquiescence. It helps to maintain the illusion of aloofness and apathy. When one is able to observe, a great deal of clarity is bestowed upon them. Observe, and become stronger, boy.”
Naruto scowled. “So you’re saying . . . if I learn to . . . observe . . . I’ll be that much closer to being Hokage?”
“More or less. Being able to shut up and watch is very useful. You’ll notice things others will not. You don’t want to be shown up by that accursed Uchiha, do you?”
A growl escaped the blonde-haired boy. “Sasuke? Hell no! You’ve got yourself a deal, bastard fox!”
Grim resolve reset, his courage re-mustered, Naruto threw himself into training with a severe vigor never before seen. The earth trembled and quaked beneath his manipulating feet and hands. The water churned ad arose in violent torrents of controlled, powerful waves of undulating power as he willed it to bend to his whim.
Arms whipping through the air in vicious swipes and a flurry of quick palm strikes, Naruto grit his teeth against the pain of his burning, protesting muscles, pushing himself further and further to the brink of exhaustion and beyond.
