    Student Number Four

29 Years After the Demon Fox Attack

Keiko sat in the back of the room wedged with her back in the corner of the room as was her habit. That way no one could sneak up on her and ambush her. It was the last week of her academy training and she had prepared intensively for the examinations so that she could become a genin as her parents once were.

Becoming a genin both excited and troubled the young girl.

Being a genin meant leaving the village and going on missions.

Being a genin meant have not having to be near the majority of her tormentors.

However, being a genin meant that she would not be near her mother, nor would she be near the few adults that treated her fairly. She would be evaluated by her jonin and being stuck with two of her classmates all the time.

Keiko had a reputation as the quiet one among her classmates. They called her dumb and stupid since she never spoke up in class. They knew that she could speak for she answered when called upon by an instructor to answer a question, but otherwise she never spoke to a teacher or a fellow student.

As was the tradition, each student drew a number and used it in lieu of a name on the examinations to prevent any favoritism on the part of the examiners. Keiko was student number four. Shi was not only the number four, but also referred to death. So powerful was the mystic connection between four and death that some many used the word yon to replace shi and avoid any possible misfortune.

As one of the sensei posted the scores for the written examination, the sensei stated aloud that student four was the first student in the history to slay the test by getting the first perfect score in the history of the village.

The sensei informed the gather crowd that the Third Hokage announced that student four was to be mentored by the jonin of his or her choice, providing that her or she passed the practical examination. Keiko carefully hid the marker and prayed that she would not encounter a grader that would flunk her simply because she was Keiko, the girl that everyone hated in the village.

Keiko watched as her classmates gossiped trying to figure out who was number four, but tradition dictated that no one shared their numbers until the graduation ceremony tonight.

As was the tradition, Keiko had to perform some the hardest jitsu that were taught to the academy students. The hardest one and the one she had had the most difficult with was the shadow clones. She knew that her father had failed twice before he found a more powerful jitsu that allowed him to create a virtual army of shadow clones.

One by one the students were called into the room for the practical examinations. Some came out with the headband they would were as a genin while others quietly came out in tears ashamed of their failure. The failures would leave out the side doorway and be invisible to the rest of the village.

Keiko closed her eyes praying that she could hold her clones together long enough to pass the examination. Every time she tried, it was like someone in her head was telling her that she was doing it wrong. Keiko tried every meditation routine, but the peace necessary for a smooth summoning was eluding her.

I can not fail. I can not fail. I will pass. I will earn my headband and prove to the other kids that I am not a failure.

Some thing told her to stand up and then it took over her body.

One of the sensei’s call her name and the class started taking bets on just how badly she was going to fail. She woodenly walked into the room and faced two of her sensei.

“You will have four tries to summon three clones.”

Her first two attempts were utter failures.

She doubled her focus. Failure would only condemn her to more ridicule.

Her third try was an utter failure. She was on the verge of tears. Unless a miracle occured she would fail. Failure was awful, especially since her mother worked so hard for the academy fees so that Keiko could go to the academy. Keiko knew that her mother did not have the money to put her through another year. Her mother owe the local moneylenders a fortune. If Keiko failed...she would never be a ninja like her parents.

One of the instructors wanted to flunk her then and there. However the other sensei told her that she had to successfully summon three clones in her next try or fail.

Keiko closed her eyes. She tried in vain to enter the calm, but the calm eluded her. Keeping her eyes closed, she tried again until she felt a voice inside of her.

We are not failing and remaining with the ones who hurt us, my fellow kit. Trust me, I remember some of the technique our father’s did.

Keiko had nothing left to lose. Her hands made a series of motions that were not taught to her by any living soul.

Suddenly the room was crowded. There were a dozen clones of her and there was no room for anyone to breath let alone move.

“Keiko, you pass. Dismiss the clones and collect your headband.”

“But she did not do the technique we taught her? She failed!”

“No, we merely asked her to summon at least three clones in four tries. She summoned a dozen on her fourth tries. We did not specify what technique. Besides, if she passes, odds are you will never have to see her again. If she fails, you will be teaching her remedial shadow clone summoning.”

    Keiko dismissed the clones.

Part of her mind overheard the argument, but her focus was on the voice inside of her.

Everyone who hated her told her that she was cursed with the same demon that haunted her father. Everyone of the older adults looked on her as if she would erupt fangs and claws. Her mom told her of a spirit that protected her and allowed her to heal rapidly from her many injuries.

Keiko met the spirit for the first time today and she knew that the spirit was one of the few things that she could trust.

Keiko left the room and most of her fellow classmates, at least the ones wearing headbands groaned.

“I hope that we don’t end up with that thing on our team. If I known she would past, I would have deliberately flunked the exam. I hope she dies in a nasty mission.”

Dozens of similar comments were uttered, but Keiko ignored them. She got to pick her sensei and return home to her mother to share the results of her exam. Her mother had sacrificed everything to ensure that Keiko succeeded and would be overjoyed that Keiko beat out her tormenters.

Later that evening, the Third Hokage watched as each student walked up as their numbers were called starting with the last student. Soon there was only one number left. No one knew who had the last number.

“Will student four please walk up?”

From the back of the room, the Third Hokage saw a slight girl limp up to the stage. People were actually booing her, but still she made her way forward. It was Keiko, the daughter of Naruto. The Hokage heard of her summoning this afternoon and wondered what would be in the young girl’s future.

It was a study of opposites.

Naruto was loud and constantly sought the attention. Keiko was quiet and preferred to remain invisible. However, both father and child carry the spirit of the nine-tailed demon fox within them.

As the Third Hokage, he had carefully studied the seal that imprisoned the nine-tail demon fox.

The spell had linked the nine-tailed demon fox soul to a mortal existance.

The soul would die with its host; that was the control that weakened the terrible spirit. However, the control over such a magical creature came at a price.

    With death came birth.

Keiko was the soul prison for the nine-tailed demon fox’s kit and if she ever had children they too would be the soul prison for the descendants of Kyuubi, the original nine-tailed demon fox that nearly destroyed the village nearly three decades ago.

The hardest thing was to figure out how Keiko could use a jutsu that no one had shone her. It was an high ranked justu that only a few jonin and a certain obnoxious blond-hair ninja mastered.

What other things does the spirit inside her know.

“Congratulations. Keiko, daughter of Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno, you are now a genin of the Konohagakure as your ancestors once were. You have triumphed over prejudice and adversity to sieze the top spot. You may encounter more prejudice and adversity in life. However always remember this moment and remember that you have succeed once before and will succeed again as long as you remain true to yourself, the virtues that your mother taught you, and never give in. Any words you wish to share with the world?”

Keiko knew that she had to say some remarks.

“I am Keiko, daughter of Naruto Uzumaki and Sakura Haruno. Because I was born without official sanction, I could not claim my father's name, nor would my mother's family tolorate me using theirs, I am legally Keiko the Bastard.

“My father, Naruto Uzumaki, died to protect our clan and others from the schemes of a renegade ninja before I was born and my mother, Sakura Haruno, had to raise me by herself.

“Some of you hate me because I am my father’s daughter. Some of you hate me because you were taught to hate me as you were taught to hate my father. Those of you that do, I feel sorry for you since your hate is a prison that limits you.

“Thank you mother for sacrificing everything so that I may have a chance to be successful. I remember all the nights that you worked extra shifts because of me. I remember all times you had to pick me up from the clinic, because I ran afoul of the other children. Without your presence in my life, I would have given up hope for a better future long ago. Thank you, for making me see that I can succeed if I believe in myself and work as hard as you have worked to raise me. Thank you for teaching me to transcend the hate others showered upon me.

“Thank you to the few of you who treated me with fairness. Thank you to the few of you who remained friends with my mother and I despite the riddicle and gossip. You are my friends and my family and without you, this day will not be possible.

“To those among you that hate me still, I have good news for you all. Soon I will be gone, traveling as a genin with a team far away from this village. You won’t have to see me or suffer my presence again for a long time. I thank you. It was your hated and abuse that made me stronger and drove me to succeed just just so I can spite you. Thank you for hating me, because you only made me stronger and drove to succeed. There is an old saying that one can be judged by one's enemies. Thank you for being my enemy.”

Keiko bowed to him as tradition required and then bowed to the upset audience before taking her place among her classmates.

The Third Hokage pondered the young girl’s words as the ceremony came to a close and the families went off to their celebrations.

The words carried the truth that marked the difference between Naruto and his child.

Naruto would keep coming back for abuse like a loyal hunting hound. Keiko learned to live without human interaction. She had very few ties to anyone in the village and if anything happened to the few she loved, she would live the village in an instant.

That would be a tragedy in the long run for the village for then in a few generations the demon foxes and Keiko's offspring would return to the village to take their revenge. No matter how justified, it might be, it was his task to protect the villagers of Konohakure from their own stupidity.

The Third Hokage knew that there would be no other celebrations to mark Keiko’s graduation. Sakura Haruno had to work at the ramen bar tonight and that Keiko helped her mother by assisting the cooks in the kitchen preparing ramen for the other celebration taking place at the restaurant.

The Third Hokage knew that Keiko was at a fragile point of her life.

The unlucky child deserved a sensei who would be fair. The Hokage needed to ensure that he selected a sensei who would strength the ties between Keiko and the village, or risk disaster in the future for one of his successors.

There was only one man her could trust with the battered soul of Keiko. The Hokage walked over to Kakashi Katake’s home. Normally Kakashi would train chunin who sought the rank of jonin. However, Keiko required a sensei who do what is best for both the village and the tortured soul that held the future of the villiage in her hands.

Kakashi Katake would be Keiko’s sensei as he was once the sensei of her parents.
