Kurenai got Hinata’s cell
phone number and she promised the blind girl that she would give it to Gaara.
She hated to see Hinata’s unseeing eyes filled with tears as the young woman sat
down in the car that was parked in front of their camp. ‘You are making a
mistake Hiashi-sama, a very big mistake here. Your daughter have just found that
certain someone that would make her life worth living and now you are pulling
her away from him. That is so wrong.’ But Kurenai knew that once that man
had made up his mind there was a little or no chance that he would change his
decision.
Gaara couldn’t believe
it. She was gone. His little songbird was gone. Hinata was gone. He sat at the
end of his bed, staring blankly into the wall in front of him. His soul was
cold, it was empty. It was almost as if he had lost his ability to breathe. But
a knock on the door brought him out of the lonely pit and he walked over and
opened it. Outside was Kurenai.
“Here Gaara-san, I think
you might want this,” she said and handed him a small piece of paper. “It’s her
cell phone number.”
And with that she turned
around and walked away. Gaara’s eyes fell on the small note and he felt warm
again. She wasn’t completely lost to him. He closed the door behind him and for
a second he cursed himself for not have thought of getting it in the first
place. He was glad that Kurenai had though. He picked up his phone and saved the
number in it for future use, the small note went inside his wallet. But still,
the cabin was quiet and suddenly he felt the need to talk to his sister, to hear
her say that everything was going to turn out fine. He called her.
Temari was a little bit
shocked when Gaara called her. He hadn’t phoned her once during this four weeks
period. But she listened to what he told her and she could feel her heart
clench. ‘My baby brother has found himself a girlfriend and now she’s gone?’
She could hear the emotions that restrained his voice and she became angry at
this girl’s father. Actually, she wanted to rip his gut out for being so cruel
and separate them like he had.
“Temari… I don’t want to
be here any longer,” said Gaara defeated.
“I know, but I can’t help
you with that. But you got her phone number… right?”
“Yes.”
“Then call her tonight.
I’m sure she’ll be happy to hear from you Gaara-chan,” said Temari and tried to
cheer him up a little.
“Thank you
Temari-neechan.”
“Anything for my little
baby brother.”
Gaara growled and Temari
chuckled. That was more like the brother she knew. They said their good bye’s
and Gaara felt a little bit better after hearing his older sister’s voice.

Hinata sat on the bed in
her room. Next to her sat Akamaru, the dog had been happy when his mistress came
home again, but he could feel that she was not very happy about it.
“Gaara-san….,” she sighed
as she felt tears run down her face and she began to cry softly.
Akamaru sensed her new
distress and he pushed his nose into her hand to show her his support.
“Akamaru, why did father
take me away? Why did he take me home now when I have found someone to care
about? I lost him. I know Kurenai-san wanted to give my phone number to him, but
will he call me? Father said so many terrible things about him Akamaru, but I
don’t think Gaara could be so cruel. I love him… Do you think he’ll ever be able
to hold me again?” cried Hinata.
Akamaru woofed in
response and felt her bury her face in his furry neck. He would always be there
for her, no matter what.
“Thank you Akamaru, you
are a true friend,” sniffed Hinata and relished the warmth her dog gave her. She
sat like that for awhile until her cell phone rang. Her chest tightened and
heard the mechanical voice say that it was an unknown number, but Hinata
answered it anyway with a soft hello.
“Hinata… is that you?”
That voice… it was Gaara!
“Gaara… yes, yes… it’s
me,” said Hinata and new tears rolled down her face.
“Kurenai-san gave me your
number… How are you?” asked Gaara, happy just to hear her voice again.
“I miss you,” said Hinata
truthfully and blushed a bit.
“I miss you too Hinata, I
miss you very much.”
Silence….
“So what have you done
today Hinata?” asked Gaara in order to get her to speak again. Just hearing that
soft voice of hers made him feel that he could go on for the rest of the summer,
then he would seek her out so he could hold her again, kiss her again.
“It was a long ride home
and father said so many horrible things about you. He said that you were only
using me because I’m blind, but I didn’t listen, I just put on my player and
listened to music instead. And when we got home I just went to my room and I’m
been here all afternoon. Akamaru is with me,” said Hinata softly as she.
“Akamaru, that was you
dog right?”
”Yes, he’s been with me for many years now.”
“Can I see you again?”
asked Gaara quietly as if he was afraid that she was going to say no.
“My father will probably
not allow it. He was upset that we were holding hands, but I don’t care Gaara. I
want to see you too. You are the best thing that ever happened to me since I got
Akamaru…”
“Hinata…” whispered Gaara
when he heard the passion behind her words.
Hinata hiccupped when a
loud knock echoed through her room. She turned her attention towards the door
and heard a voice call out for her.
“Hinata-sama, who are you
talking to?” asked Neji through the door.
Hinata cleared her throat
before answering. “Neji-niisan… I’m t-talking to a f-friend.”
“The dinner is ready,
come down.”
“I’ll be down in a minute
Neji-niisan,” said Hinata and listened to his footsteps disappear down the hall
and when she was sure that he was out of hearing range she turned her attention
back to Gaara. “I’m sorry about that. But I have to go now. Dinner is ready…”
“Hinata are you ok?”
asked Gaara worriedly.
“Yes, I’m ok… But… Can I
call you later? I’ll save your number…”
She didn’t want dinner,
she wanted to just sit here and talk to Gaara. Hearing his voice made her feel
as if he was just next to her. It made her feel safe and cared for, just like
she did when she woke up this morning.
“I’ll be waiting for your
call…. Hinata..”
“Gaara… I miss you…. Uhm…
Bye!!” She hung up and grabbed her walking stick. “Come on Akamaru, let’s eat
quickly so we can call Gaara again.
Akamaru answered with an
encouraging woof again.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
One week later…
Neji was worried about
Hinata. His young cousin was acting strange, she barely ventured outside her
room, and when she did, she would walk to the most secluded and isolated parts
of their large garden. And what was it with those long and soft spoken phone
calls? Who was she talking to?
And now she was off to
hide somewhere again. He searched for an hour before he found her, obviously she
had noticed that he followed her around and found herself a new hiding place.
She was sitting on a large tree branch, six feet up in the air. Neji wondered
how she was able to get up there and how the hell was she going to come down
without hurting herself.
“Hinata-sama!!” he called
out and saw how Hinata turn her unseeing eyes towards him. She just smiled and
before he could react she was standing on the ground, she just had jumped off
the branch and landed gracefully in front of him.
“Neji-niisan, what are
you doing here? Are you following me again?” asked Hinata softly as she whistled
for Akamaru who came to her within a few seconds.
“Hiashi-sama wishes to
see you,” said Neji with indifferent voice. He didn’t like how her eyes
penetrated his soul. It didn’t matter that she was blind, she could see his true
self… or so he thought anyway. He choked down a shiver that threatened to
destroy his pose.
“And like an obedient
little errand boy, you do as your master tells you. How nice,” said Hinata, her
voice still soft but you could clearly hear the venom dripping from its edge.
“Well, you can tell my father that he can come for himself if he wants to see
me. I’m sure he can find the time to seek me out if he wishes to see me so
badly.”
Neji stiffened; this was
not like Hinata at all. She always obeyed her father before, but seeing her now
made Neji curious to what she had been through at that camp. “He said it was
important.”
“It’s always important
Neji-niisan. My father can never just see me to ask me if I’m ok, if there is
anything I need or simply just be a father that comforts his oldest daughter
when she are feeling sad. Of course it’s important. Most probably he wants me to
‘look’ at another set of men that he wants me to marry. One of them at least and
it has to be someone he agrees to. A marriage to strengthen the bonds with
another company or so, but he can forget it. I will not do it!! ” And with that
Hinata turned around and walked away, Akamaru faithfully followed her.
Neji was left a little
bit stunned. She had just turned her back against him and walked away. She had
grown some spine he had to admit, but stand up against her father like that, he
wasn’t so sure she would get away with it. He silently sighed and went back to
the house. Hiashi-sama was not going to be happy when he heard this. But then he
really understood what she had said and he was shocked. Had Hiashi-sama already
begun a search for a husband for Hinata? Was that even allowed today? ‘No
wonder you are so reluctant to see your father Hinata-sama,’ thought Neji as
he saw the front door of the large house come into view.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
“Did you tell her that it
was important Neji-kun?” asked Hiashi as he watched his nephew as this told him
what happened.
“Yes, of course
Hiashi-sama,” said Neji feeling uncomfortable under his white stare.
“Where did you find her?”
“Near the lotus pond, but
I am not sure she’ll be there now. She walked away after I had asked her to come
with me,” said Neji, but he didn’t dare to say that he had found her six feet up
in a tree. Hiashi would have a fit if he knew that.
“Damn it Hinata, you know
that you was supposed to meet with Uchiha-san today,” spat Hiashi and Neji was
afraid that the man was going to have a heart attack in his fury. “Get her back
here Neji-kun, I don’t care how – just do it. Punch the air out of her if you
have to!”
Neji’s eyes widened.
Surely his uncle didn’t want him to hurt Hinata?
“I mean it Neji-kun.
Knock her out. She will be punished when she gets back here. Now go – Find
her!!” ordered Hiashi sternly.
Neji nodded, but he was
not sure if he was going to be able to carry out his uncle’s plans. He might be
an ice cold bastard from time to time, but hit a girl, a blind girl no less, was
not something Neji did. He just had to find a way to persuade Hinata to come
back with him to the house. But as he searched the large garden area around the
house he realized that Hinata had vanished. He went to the lotus pond where he
first had found her that day, he searched around it, but she was no where to be
found. ‘Hiashi-sama is not going to like this,’ he thought as the idea of
Hinata running away from home hit him.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
But Hinata was not so
very far away. She just had climbed a little bit higher into a tree and ordered
Akamaru to run home to his little dog house, so she was there alright. She could
hear Neji run around in the garden almost like a frantic rabbit in order to find
her. She smiled as the luscious green leafs hid her quite well. She knew why her
father wanted her to be home today. Again she was going to be presented in front
of another possible husband. She refused. She was not going to marry anyone. Her
heart belonged to Gaara and she wouldn’t allow anyone to touch her, she would
rather commit hara-kiri.
‘Gaara, I wish I could
be with you now. I wish I could be with you and you would hold me just like you
did when you danced with me.’
The thought made her feel sad again and she pulled her legs up and rested her
head against her knees. Her arms went around her knees and she balanced
perfectly on the large tree-branch. ‘I wish I could run away… then I would
find you Gaara and we could… we could do what ever we wanted.’ But she
couldn’t, not until she was eighteen and she had access to the fund that her
late mother had set up for her. But if her father was stubborn, Hinata would be
ten times that. She would not give in to his orders. She was a human being and
no body would force her to do something she didn’t want to do. Until would only
obey if she wanted to, but marry a man she never would feel anything for – that
was absolutely out of the question.
But her peaceful moment
high up in the tree was about to be disturbed. She heard her cousin stop under
the tree and she was certain that he had found her this time.
‘Well, he can’t make me come down unless I want to.’
“There you are
Hinata-sama, come down please,” she heard Neji’s voice from the under the tree.
“No, why should I?” asked
Hinata without “looking” at him.
“Your father requests
your presence immediately, please come down.”
“Did he offer you the
opportunity to beat me up too?!” Now Hinata’s voice lost had its softness. The
razor sharp edge was enough to cut a diamond at this moment. “Because I wouldn’t
put him pass that.”
Neji contemplated for a
few seconds on how he should answer her and decided that telling the truth was
the best option here. “Yes, he said that I was allowed to punch the air out of
you in order to bring you back, but I have no intentions on doing so. I don’t
like the idea of beating up a woman just because she doesn’t obey her father.
And you are blind on top of that. That would be flat out cowardly.”
Hinata gave up a snort
and turned her face towards the afternoon sun. Her cousin never thought much of
her, he never had and he probably never would either. Did she care? Not at this
very moment no. All she wanted was to be with her friend. Nothing else.
“Don’t worry about me
Neji-niisan, I’m sure father will forgive me… in time. I’ll come home later.”
“Hinata-sama, I can not
return unless you are with me,” said Neji feeling more and more uncomfortable
around her new found self esteem. Those four weeks she was away had done plenty
and now he was beginning to wonder if her father had made a mistake in sending
her away. He shrugged his head a bit in order to remove the disturbing thoughts
and he looked up at the crouching figure in the tree. He had promised her father
that he would always protect her. But the same man had also said that he was
allowed to beat her up. It made no sense to Neji and he was feeling a bit… it
was as if he was about to fall ill or something.
“Then you will be here
for yet another hour or so,” said Hinata and it was something in her voice that
told Neji that this was where their conversation ended.
He sat down at the base
of the tree and waited.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Hinata decided to return
to the house the moment their guests arrived. She smiled gently at them and she
could almost feel the anger radiate from her father. ‘You can try and control
me father, but you will not succeed.’ She excused herself, telling she
should change her clothes into more proper ones for the dinner.
Once back inside the
safety of her room she opened her cell phone and called Gaara. She needed to
hear his voice before joining her father and his guest before the dinner was
ready.
“Hinata… I was wondering
when I would hear your voice today. Are you feeling alright?” he asked and
suddenly Hinata felt the urge to cry.
“I miss you Gaara. It has
only been a week, but it feels like a life time,” whispered Hinata as her hand
clenched around the small phone.
“Three more weeks and I
will do anything I can to come and visit you, Hinata. I promise you I’ll come
and visit you.”
“Thank you… I just needed
to hear your voice before dinner. You see…,” Hinata bit her lower lip. She had
not told him about her father’s persistence in finding her a suitable husband, a
person that could bond him to another company. “My father… He’s…. He’s trying to
find someone for me…”
“Hinata… what are you
saying?” She could hear Gaara’s voice go an octave lower, almost growling into
the phone.
“He wants to find me a
husband. But I refuse, I will not have anyone that he will choose for me….”
Her voice died out and
now she could feel tears trickle down her face. She could hear Gaara snarl out a
long curse at the other end and she wished she just could close her eyes, tap
her heels together and fly over the rainbow to be with him.
“Hinata, I care for very
little in my life… but you are the most precious thing I have. I will not loose
you..”
“Ohh, Gaara, I wish I
could be with you… always…”
“Don’t worry Hinata;
we’ll make this work… somehow… Don’t cry, please… I hate to hear you cry like
this… be strong for me… and I’ll see you as soon as possible… believe in me
Hinata,” Gaara pleaded with thick voice.
“I believe in you Gaara,
I will always believe in you…” sobbed Hinata and tried to dry her tears. She
took a deep breath to calm herself down a bit and heard his soothing voice at
the other end, telling her that she should be strong for him and him only. “I
will Gaara… I will be strong.”
“Good, now take a shower
and put on a nice dress… and when ever you feel afraid think of me… how I hug
you… kiss you… make you mine…”
Hinata forgot to cry, her
face heated up and she felt a jolt go through her stomach. “Gaara!!” she gasped
as the words sunk into her mind.
“I can’t help it Hinata.
You make me thing naughty thoughts. I dream of you every night,” Gaara said
huskily, his voice low and almost purring as he continued to tell Hinata of what
he dreamed about. “Last night we were at the bonfire dance again. But we were
alone, just you and me, dancing in the radiance of the flames. Hinata, you
looked so beautiful. You dress flowing slightly in the night breeze; your skin
glowed with passion. We kissed; we kissed so deeply that our souls could touch
each other.”
Hinata fell back onto the
bed, just listening to his hypnotic voice. Her body was throbbing as she could
easily depict the scene inside her head as he described it to her.
“I laid you down on a
blanket and I was about to…”
Unfortunately he couldn’t
tell her more because Neji, her watch dog came along and knocked on the door
before entering. He saw the flushed face of Hinata and she stuttered out an
excuse.
“I’m sorry, have to go…
but… but I want to hear the rest later…. Miss you… uhm… bye…!!” She listened to
his voice as he told her that he would continue his story once they were alone
again. She closed the phone and looked angrily at Neji.
“Hinata-sama, who were
you talking to?” asked Neji, he did not like the way Hinata sounded and he did
not like the way she looked at the moment. The soft blush on her pale cheeks,
her eyes shimmering with unleashed desires.
“Why are you so
interested all of a sudden? And since when did I gave you permission to enter my
room without my spoken consent?” she said, her voice amazingly cold.
“Your father wants you to
come down now.”
“I have not showered yet.
Tell my father I will come down once I’m ready.”
Neji gritted his teeth
together but nodded and turned around and walked out of the door. Hinata’s hands
came up and she covered her flushed face. ‘Gods, Gaara…. What are you doing
to me?’ she thought as the tingling inside her stomach made itself known
again. But she calmed down and stepped into the bathroom that was connected to
her personal space.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The dinner was a bit of a
disaster. Well, perhaps not the dinner itself, but what came after it. It was
the socializing that Hinata had to endure. Talking and being nice to a man that
wanted to force his son upon her or the other way around, depending on who you
were talking to. She really tried being nice, but her father dragged her around
the corner and told her to get herself together, because this was not the
daughter he had raised he told her. ‘Well, perhaps it was, but you never saw
the real person behind her blind and shy mask…’ But she kept her mouth shut
about that and promised her father she would try and be nicer.
She talked with the
young man that her father thought would be a good husband for her. His name was
Sasuke and he was seventeen years old. Just one year older than herself. He
sounded just as interested in this bond as she was. Not at all. But she was a
good daughter and at one time she asked him if he wanted to join her in the
garden for a cup of tea so they could talk without having their fathers butting
in all the time. He complied to her wishes and she led him outside.
A servant came out with
tea and Hinata thanked him for it and then asked to be left alone. She turned
her unseeing eyes towards the young man. His voice sounded bored and she
inwardly smiled. ‘Well, you are not the only one that finds this boring
Uchiha-san,’ she thought dryly.
“Hinata-san, you can
almost fool me… are you really blind?” asked Sasuke as he watched the young
woman pour tea into two cups without spilling a drop.
“I have been blind since
birth Uchiha-san, does it bother you that I can not see you?” asked Hinata as
she held out the cup to Sasuke.
“No, not really.”
“But you are bothered by
the facts that our fathers are inside the house, discussing a marriage between
the two of us?”
”Yes. You are very perceptive Hinata-san.”
“Being blind does not
make me into a complete fool. I hear a lot that actually isn’t being said,” said
Hinata and sipped her tea.
“I don’t like women.”
“Oh, perhaps you would be
better off with my cousin then?” Hinata’s face split up in a soft understanding
smile. “He’s never said anything, but I know it anyway. He would probably deny
it with all his soul if I asked him. But I don’t mind, love is love… right?”
Sasuke saw the sorrowful
wave that washed over her face, it was very quickly but he saw it. “You have
someone… don’t you Hinata-san?”
“Yes, I have someone… And
I will do anything to make sure that this marriage will not happen. Perhaps you
have someone too?” asked Hinata and felt a stone lift from her shoulders when
she heard the acceptance in his voice.
“Yes, I have someone that
I like very much, but he doesn’t know it. I’m afraid that he will turn away in
disgust,” said Sasuke and felt a small blush cover his cheeks.
“What’s his name?”
“Naruto, Uzumaki,
Naruto.”
Hinata’s eyes widened a
bit, she knew that name. She knew Naruto. He had been at the same camp as her.
She told Sasuke about the camp and that she had met him and Sasuke’s voice
became excited as well. Somehow it was easy talking to Sasuke. He was polite and
he seemed very much in love with Naruto. And her acceptance of his nature was
something that he found very comforting. They talked for over two hours before
their fathers came out and disturbed them.
And of course they
misunderstood the two youths and thought that they really liked each other.
Sasuke growled and told his father that he was mistaking and Hinata could hear
the venom dripping from his voice. He was not happy to hear them, not happy at
all.
“When will you understand
that I don’t want to marry anyone,” asked Sasuke as he rose to his feet, gently
offering Hinata his hand to help her up. “And you Hyuuga-sama, have you not seen
that your daughter is in love with someone else?”
“Young Sasuke, my
daughter thinks she loves this juvenile delinquent, but I assure you, once she’s
married she will get over this childish crush she has on him,” said Hiashi.
“And you Sasuke, you only
think that you like boys better than girls. Have you ever tried kissing a girl
so you know what you are talking about?” said Sasuke’s father. “No, I didn’t
think so either.”
“Father, Uchiha-sama… I
wonder which of us here are in childish denial??” asked Hinata and bowed to them
both before Sasuke dragged her inside the house again, leaving two stunned men
behind them.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Sasuke followed the white
eyed girl to her room and she offered him to sit down and then they would wait
for the explosion. He smiled at her words. Again he had been very impressed by
the way she moved through the house. If you didn’t know, you would barely see
that she was blind. She moved with such ease and he asked her about it.
“Well, I grew up here. I
know this house and its surroundings very well. But when I first arrived at the
summer camp, I was like a trembling leaf. Gaara was not happy to be hooked up
with me in the cabin,” said Hinata with a soft smile.
“Gaara??”
“Yes, Sabaku, Gaara…
that’s the name on my special someone,” answered Hinata and blushed.
“Shit, I know that guy…
he’s a weirdo, a loner… are you sure?” asked Sasuke, rather surprised to hear
the name of one of the freakiest guys in school.
“Yes, I’m sure. Do you
know him?” asked Hinata curiously.
“I know who he is. He
often got into fights, guess that’s why he’s attending to that kind of camp.”
“Have you ever fought
with him?”
“Once, we were five years
old and went to the same kindergarten. He had occupied the whole sand box,”
smiled Sasuke as he remembered the incident he had been told about. “He made a
figure he called Shukaku, he said it was a racoon, but it looked more like a
sand monster.”
Hinata giggled. “Well, to
me he was the nicest boy around. Perhaps not at first, he was so angry that he
had to be there and he was angry that he had to share cabin with a blind girl
that barely could stand on her own to feet, but he helped me a lot. Reluctantly
at first, but then we became friends and we talked a lot. He helped me get rid
of my stutter, although I do stutter from time to time…”
“Are you sure we’re
talking about the same guy here?” smiled Sasuke but silenced when he heard their
fathers call for them. “Time to meet the apocalypse… Are you coming with me?”
Hinata nodded and
together they went downstairs. There they were greeted by two happy fathers. It
had been decided that Sasuke would stay here until Hinata was eighteen and a
marriage could be preformed between the two. ‘Denial, yes, denial it is…’
thought Hinata depressingly and she couldn’t do a thing about it. But she still
had a year and a half until she turned eighteen and as soon as that day came,
she was going to disappear from this house. ‘Wait for
me Gaara…’
