Sasuke awoke when the first light of dawn came streaking through his window. He rolled over to glance at Naruto and was surprised to see the blond sleeping on the far end of the bed, teetering dangerously. If he took in too deep of a breath he would probably go tumbling off the edge. Sasuke reached across the cool sheets to gently roll him back toward the center of the bed, out of harm's way.Naruto's eyes flew open in terror as Sasuke's hand touched his back. After taking one look at his dark haired master he rolled backward off the bed frantically, a tangle of arms, legs and sheets. He struggled out of their satiny grip and scooted himself backward into the corner, wedging himself between the dresser and the wall. The entire time he was keening and crying and whimpering, and Sasuke briefly wondered if that was what it sounded like when someone was speaking in tongues. This whole scene seemed like it came right out of The Exorcist. 'Great, he doesn't have multiple personalities... he's possessed.'
Sasuke shook his head and stood up cautiously. "Naruto, are you ok?" He asked quietly as he walked around the bed and peered at the space between the dresser and the wall. "I'm sorry I got in your bed. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I got cold. Please don't punish me. Please don't punish me." Naruto had his body compacted into a tight ball and his whimpered pleas were heart breaking. He was shaking so violently that Hinata's senior picture was rattling on the desk, half the room away."Naruto, it's Sasuke, remember last night? I told you to stay in my bed, I'm not going to punish you." He said, surprising himself with the concern in his voice. The terrified boy did not look up so Sasuke walked over to the door and opened it. Unwilling to let Naruto out of his sight he opted for calling down the hallway. "Hinata! Can you come in here, please?"
"Please don't punish me. I'll do anything you want. I'll let you fuck me however you want. I’ll be a good toy for you." Naruto was sobbing at this point, and as much as Sasuke wanted to go over and drag him out from his hiding spot, he had a feeling that would only make this whole situation worse.
"Sasuke-kun? What happened?" Hinata said as she stepped into the room. Spying Naruto trembling in the corner she moved toward him immediately but Sasuke blocked her way.
"Don't get close to him Hinata. He could be dangerous."
"He's not dangerous, he's scared."
"Trust me, I've seen his version of scared." he said as he pointed at the massive bruise on his forehead. "I don't think he'd mean to, but he might still hurt you."
"Move." She said firmly, pushing Sasuke gently to the side.
"Naruto, it's me, Hinata." She whispered softly as she lowered herself to the floor and crawled toward him. "Remember last night? Remember all those bottles I gave you? You seemed so happy to have them. Remember that?"
Naruto's crying slowly turned in to sniffles and the violent shaking ceased. He lifted his head from its buried position and blinked slowly. He turned his eyes to Sasuke and his bottom lip began to tremble again.
"He's going to punish you if you try to help me. He'll hurt you. Go away." Naruto whispered urgently.
"Sasuke's not going to hurt me. I don't know who you think he is, but you're confused. Sasuke's nice."
"He burns me. He burns me every time he has me. Why does he hate me so much?" Naruto buried his head in his hands again and the sobbing started anew. Hinata stood up and backed away slowly. She grabbed her raven-haired friend by the hand and pulled him out into the hall.
"I don't know Sasuke. We may be in over our heads here. I think he’s having some sort of episode. Do you think we should call an ambulance?"
"No. They'll turn him in to the police and I don't like to think about what they might do with him," he said, before setting his face in grim determination. "I have an idea, but I think you should leave. You're not going to like this."
"Like what?" Hinata questioned.
"What I'm about to do. He obviously thinks I'm someone that I'm not, but I guarantee you it's someone he'll take orders from."
Hinata eyed him warily, but nodded her head. "You're right, I don't like it, but if you think it will help... I need to get ready for work anyway. My internship starts today, remember?"
"Right, good luck with that." He said as he pecked her chastely on the forehead. "You'll be great and we'll be fine here. Try not to worry."
Hinata laughed softly. "I don't think I'll do anything but worry."
"Don't." he replied before turning to Naruto. "Here goes nothing." Sasuke muttered as he let himself back into his room, only to be met with a fresh round of sobs. He gave Hinata one last pained glance and then shut the door behind him. He stormed over to the corner Naruto was currently cowering in and kicked the wall.
"Listen up you little whore." He said as harshly as he could manage. "Get in the bed... now."
Naruto moved as if to comply, then broke down completely and dissolved into tears once more. Sasuke felt like his knees were going to buckle, but his resolve remained firm. He knew this would work. He'd make it up to Naruto later.
"I don't know what the fuck you think you're doing you pathetic piece of trash" Sasuke yelled as he brought his fist crashing down on the dresser inches from Naruto's head "but if you don't get your crying ass out from there and into that bed in the next three seconds I'm going to fuck you up so bad there isn't going to be enough of you left to put in a coffin. Now move."
The blond boy became very quiet all of a sudden, and as if in a trance, stood up and walked slowly to the bed. He kept his face towards the ground the entire time. When he had climbed onto the mattress he got on his hands and knees, facing the head board, and placed his head on the pillow. This position looked well rehearsed… the perfect position for punishment, Sasuke noted grimly.
It had worked and Naruto was no longer hiding in the corner, but now he had no clue what he was going to do with the frightened boy. Inwardly berating himself for his lack of planning, the first thing he needed to do was ensure that the blond wouldn't jump back for the corner the minute Sasuke's back was turned.
"Naruto. I do not want you to move. Do you understand me?"
"Yes, Aniki."
"Good. Now...Wait? What? What did you just say?" Sasuke felt the room spinning. It was a common nickname. It was an ordinary thing to say. This didn't mean... but Naruto said that someone burnt him...It couldn't be... It wasn't possible... He was dead… They’d found his body in the house… It wasn’t possible. Sasuke sat down hard on the bed.
"I said yes, Aniki. I won't move until you tell me I can." Naruto answered quietly, his voice shaking with fear.
"I'm not your brother. Why did you call me Aniki?" Sasuke asked roughly, feeling a little guilty for continuing this charade with Naruto, even if it was for a good cause.
"You... you told me to call you Aniki. You said..." Naruto broke off and started dry heaving over the side of the bed. His chest rose and fell sharply and Sasuke was frightened for him. He decided to forget about his suspicions for the time being, since they were technically impossible, and focus on the orphan. He needed to calm him down. Thinking back to the last time he had needed comfort, Sasuke remembered what Hinata used to do for him when she found him crying in the night. He decided to try a modified version of it on Naruto, although the very thought of touching the younger boy made his stomach tighten and twist.
"Take off your shirt." Sasuke ordered, trying to make his voice sound gentler this time. The boy did as he was told.
"Now lay down on your stomach." Naruto shuddered but once again complied. Sasuke sighed inwardly, thankful that Naruto was cooperating, then carefully laid down next to him and started to gently rub the tanned shoulders before him. He traced his fingers in swirly patterns all over the scars and continued rubbing and kneading gently until Naruto's breathing slowed down.
"Do you remember who I am now?"
Naruto turned his head to look at the man speaking and slowly recognition spread across his face. He blinked a few times as if coming out of a dream, and then spoke softly.
"You're Sasuke... But you look so much like..." His voice trailed off and Sasuke wanted desperately to question him, but dreading the nightmares it might dig up within his mind, decided to ignore this for now. He would deal with it later. Naruto's stomach growled loudly and that reminded the older boy that they had both skipped dinner last night.
"Put your shirt back on and we'll go get breakfast."
Naruto mumbled a quiet apology and pulled the shirt over his head. Sasuke stood up and walked through the doorway, motioning for the younger boy to follow him. Out in the kitchen Hinata had set out two bowls and every box of cereal they had in the apartment.
"W-we didn't have any other b-breakfast foods." She said as Sasuke gave her a questioning glance. His friend had stuttered all through grade school, but reserved it now for times when she was particularly stressed out. "You can have leftovers for lunch. I don't want to be late for my first day so I've got to g-get moving." she said. Sasuke stood as she passed him and pulled her into a breif hug. He gave her a soft peck on the top of her head as she pulled away from him and headed toward the door.
"You'll be fine Hinata. You’re well qualified, and if anyone bothers you, I’ll kill them." Sasuke said seriously.
Hinata cast him a sharp glance and fumbled with her keys. With one last shaky smile she was gone. Sasuke turned back to the table and surveyed the cereal boxes before him.
"What would you like?" Sasuke said as he selected Cheerios for himself.
"I don't know." Naruto said softly. "I've never had cereal before and it looks like you have every kind they make."
Sasuke could barely believe that the boy before him had never been given cereal, but considering Naruto's life, he supposed it was possible.
"Do you like plain or sweet?"
"I'm not sure." Naruto's cheeks were turning pink and Sasuke got the distinct impression that the blond was worried he would make the wrong choice and get in trouble.
"Well, Lucky Charms are both plain and sweet, so how about you start with that?"
Naruto looked relieved at the suggestion and nodded his head. Sasuke filled up the ceramic bowl and poured on the milk. Handing it over to Naruto, along with a spoon, he stood up and excused himself from the table to use the restroom before pouring his own breakfast.
When he came back Naruto's bowl was empty and the blond boy was elbow deep in the cereal box. When he looked up and saw Sasuke he practically fell backward out of his chair in surprise; dropping the box as he tried to steady himself -- hearts, moons and stars flying all over the table and floor.
"I'm sorry!" Naruto gasped and began desperately trying to collect all of the cereal that was littering the kitchen.
"Naruto, leave it." Sasuke choked out, trying to keep from looking amused since the younger boy looked so embarrassed. He reached down, pulled a marshmallow out of the blond's hair and popped it in his mouth.
"I haven't had Lucky Charms in ages." he said, smirking slightly. "This is better than I remembered." With that he grabbed a broom out of the pantry and started to sweep up the mess as Naruto attempted to clean off the table unsuccessfully. With all of his nervous shaking he managed to knock over the milk carton and a half gallon of Vitamin D went spilling all over the table and floor. Sasuke walked back to the pantry feeling terribly amused. He grabbed the mop for himself and a sponge for Naruto. He tossed the purple rectangle to the boy and then started splishing the milk around the floor.
"Maybe paper towels will work better for this." Sasuke said as he grabbed a roll and started mopping up the mess on the floor with them. "What were you doing with the cereal box, anyway?"
"I was… trying to get the prize." Naruto confessed softly. "I'm sorry. I wasn’t going to steal it, I just wanted to see it, I promise. I’m sorry!"
Sasuke picked up the box and stared at it for a moment.
"Stop saying you're sorry. It makes me feel like I'm being mean to you. You should have read this first, anyway." The older boy said, pointing to the side of the box. "This is one of those deals where they make you send in a few proofs-of-purchase and then they mail you back your prize." Sasuke surveyed the boxes on the table, picked up a box of Fruit Loops and handed it to Naruto. "There's a prize in this one. Go for it."Naruto eyed the box and then eyed Sasuke.
"Why are you being so nice to me?"
The question caught Sasuke off guard and he put the box back down on the table. Honestly he didn't know why he was acting like this. It was totally unlike him to smile, or to laugh, or to eat cereal out of someone's hair. He supposed it was because when he looked at the blond boy he saw what could have become of him if he hadn't had such caring people around. Also, since he and Neji had broken up, he rarely got a chance to be himself around anyone but Hinata. Whenever he was in public he put on the mask that kept him safe, and he had few friends.
“If you want the truth, I don’t know why I’m being nice to you,” he stated plainly, figuring Naruto deserved the truth. “Would you rather I be less nice?” he asked evenly.
Naruto mumbled something under his breath and Sasuke looked at him inquisitively.
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
"I want to know what you said." Sasuke demanded.
"I said… that I'd rather you be mean to me now than to make me think you're going to be nice and then start being mean to me tomorrow." Naruto relented, his voice getting softer with each word until he practically trailed off at the end.
"Oh." Sasuke didn't know what else to say. "Why don't you go get a bath while I clean up this milk?"
Naruto seemed glad to get out of the conversation as well and headed back toward the bathroom. A minute later he came back out, carrying a towel and all the goodies Hinata had given him. Sasuke noticed he was holding them as if they were treasure.
"I got milk on these pants." Naruto said, looking ashamed and scuffing his foot across the floor. "Should I put them back on or do you have something else you'd prefer I wear?"
"Go ahead and hop in the tub. I'll bring you in something clean. We'll go shopping this afternoon to get you something more appropriate for your stay here."
Naruto's eyes lit up for a moment then clouded over. He looked nervous again.
"Damn it, I'm not talking about anything kinky. I mean jeans and shirts. I wish you'd stop looking terrified every time I talk to you. Can't you just accept I'm being nice?" Sasuke asked crossly.
"I'll try." Was all Naruto could manage to say as he fled to the relative safety of the bathroom.
Sasuke finished cleaning up the mess and was glad to hear the bath water running. He went to his room and selected a pair of jeans and a shirt that seemed like they might be small enough to fit Naruto and headed toward the bathroom. As he stepped near he heard the unmistakable sound of praying. Is this all Naruto does when he's alone? Knowing full well he had promised himself he would jump out the nearest window before doing this again, he moved closer to the door and listened in. This was turning into an awful habit.
"… but I guess you saw that too. I can't believe he didn't beat me. The carton was almost completely full. I just keep waiting for it though. I know it's coming. Even if they really are trying to be nice, it's only a matter of time until they see I'm not worth it. I know you don't approve of all this sex stuff, but I know if I can get Sasuke to see how good I am at it, he might not get tired of me as quickly. You'll forgive me, right? I don't suppose you might help me out? I tried last night and I think I just made him mad. He said it was because Hinata might be upset, but I'm pretty sure it's because I'm not good enough for him. I bet he could have any guy he wanted which pretty much leaves him no reason to want me.
Anyway, please bless Hinata on her first day at work, and help her to do well and keep her safe because she's so nice. Please bless Father Iruka for always trying to help me out and please bless all the hungry people in the world and help them find ways to get food. Say hi to mom and dad for me. It looks like I might not be seeing them as soon as I thought. Oh, and please bless Sasuke. He looks so sad most of the time. Amen."
Sasuke let himself slide down the wall to the floor, where he landed with a silent thud. That prayer wasn't nearly as depressing as the last two had been. It explained a lot about Naruto's behavior, at least. 'What was up with him saying that I look sad most of the time, though? Do I look sad?' Sasuke had never really considered it. Most of the time if he was around people he wore a mask of blank indifference to hide any trace of emotion, but at home, he wasn't nearly as careful. Maybe Naruto was right. He certainly didn't feel happy. It occurred to him that when he was laughing to himself about the cereal being all over the kitchen, that was the first time he'd truly felt pleasant in months. Not since he and Neji broke up had he felt any kind of real happiness outside of his devotion to Hinata.
When he heard Naruto stand up from his bath he realized several minutes had passed and he hadn't taken him in the clothes yet. He stepped inside the bathroom, trying his best, though failing, to avoid staring at the beautiful blond toweling himself off. Naruto for his part seemed completely unashamed that he wasn't wearing anything and didn't show the slighted discomfort at Sasuke being in the room.
"Do you like what you see?" The boy purred at Sasuke when he realized he was being watched.
"Knock it off, blondie." Sasuke answered briskly, irritated at being caught, and more irritated that he was becoming aroused for what felt like the fiftieth time in the last day. At this rate he was going to have to castrate himself if he truly wanted to avoid sex with the golden haired angel standing before him. He sat the clothes down on the edge of the tub and tried not to notice the hurt look on Naruto's face.
He turned and quickly left the bathroom, heading to the study to read some of Hinata's latest fan fiction until the boy was finished getting ready. Staring at the computer screen he couldn't help but think how embarrassed Hinata would be if she ever found out Neji told him she wrote this stuff. You would never guess it by looking at the innocent girl, but she could write some serious smut. By the time he was finished reading the latest escapades of Harry and Draco he was so horny he thought about walking back into the bathroom and screwing Naruto then and there, morals be damned. Putting those thoughts quickly aside, he checked the stock reports and the weather, willing away his pesky erection, until he heard Naruto enter the study and sit down on one of the soft leather chairs. Sasuke closed out of the window and stood up.
"Let's go. It looks like it might rain this afternoon and I'd rather us get back before it starts. We'll have to take the bus downtown because I'm currently not allowed to drive." The older boy said with a sigh. He picked up his apartment keys and Naruto followed him out of the door and into the posh hallway. A "wet paint" sign met them at the entrance to the stairs so Sasuke reluctantly pushed the button for the elevator. It arrived with a ding and they stepped inside, the dark haired boy taking a deep breath as the doors swished closed. Not many people knew it, but Sasuke hated tightly enclosed spaces.
The elevator had only gone down one floor when it stopped to let on additional riders. As the doors swished open, Sasuke was astonished to see Gaara and Neji making out against the opposite wall. Neji was still wearing his outfit from the night before and Gaara was barely wearing anything at all. Who walks around in a fishnet shirt on a Monday morning?
"What the hell are you doing?" Sasuke asked angrily. Gaara looked confused.
"Are you talking to me or him?" The redhead questioned.
"Him." Sasuke answered darkly, glaring at Hinata’s cousin.
"Not that it's any of your business, Sasuke-kun," Neji growled, putting an angry emphasis on the cutesy form of the boy's name "but I met Gaara on my way downstairs last night and it seems we have much in common."
"Yeah, like a mutual interest in blow jobs." Sasuke mused venomously.
"Says the boy who brought home a prostitute last night." Neji returned. "No offense Naruto." he added, looking mildly sorry he'd brought the younger boy into this argument. The blond just looked at the floor blushing.
"Were you two an item?" Gaara asked, his green eyes narrowing wickedly.
"Yes. But we're over now and Sasuke has no say in who I date. Let's wait for the next elevator. This one seems a little crowded." Sasuke having heard enough, pushed the "close door" button hard, and the doors shut with a swish.
"Fuck him!" Sasuke shouted at no one in particular. All thoughts of puppy and rainbow visualization pushed aside, he spun around and punched the number panel next to the door as hard as he could. The elevator came to a shuddering stop, mid floor. An alarm sounded and Sasuke started pushing buttons rapidly but nothing happened. The world started going fuzzy around his eyes and he gasped as all the air rushed out of his lungs.
"Are you all right?" Naruto asked as he grabbed Sasuke around the waist to steady him.
"We're going to die." Was all the raven-haired boy could manage to say between gasps. Naruto wouldn't have thought it was possible, but Sasuke was actually getting paler by the minute.
"Are you claustrophobic?" he asked, lowering Sasuke to the floor.
"Yes." Sasuke mumbled, placing his head in his hands and rocking back and forth slightly. Naruto looked at the number panel again and pushed the intercom button that would call the front desk.
"Hello? How may I help you?"
"Ummm… Hi. My friend and I are stuck on the elevator between the second and third floors. We can't get it started, can you get someone to fix it?"
"Sure thing! This happens all the time. I'll call the elevator company right away. It'll probably be about 30 minutes until they get here. Will you be all right?"
"No!!!" Sasuke pleaded at the same time Naruto gave the woman a reassuring "We'll be fine."
The intercom cut out and the Uchiha boy jumped, cracking his head hard on the elevator doors.
"We'll be fine, Sasuke. We're perfectly safe." Naruto said gently. "There's nothing to be afraid of."
"Except running out of air." Sasuke returned, glaring at Naruto for his sudden show of optimism. Shouldn’t he be praying or something?
"We're not going to run out of air." The blond boy soothed. "Want me to take your mind off of things?" he asked, placing his hand on Sasuke's thigh timidly.
The older boy looked at Naruto resignedly and asked the question he knew was going to lead to more trouble than he cared to think about.
"What did you have in mind?"
