The
next morning, Sakura woke up early, intent on preparing some breakfast for
Naruto and herself. She snuck over
Naruto, out the door, and into the living room. As she passed through the living room, she was surprised to
find the TV on, and Inari sitting in front of it.
“You’re
up early”
“You’re
up early,” they said to each other at the same time. Sakura pointed towards the kitchen. “Naruto and I are getting ready to
leave. I’m making some
breakfast. Why are you up?”
Inari
grinned. “I always wake up early
in the morning,” he said. “Anyway,
where’s Naruto-niichan at?”
Sakura
glanced back towards her room.
“Naruto’s still asleep. I
was going to start cooking breakfast and then wake him up.”
Inari
smiled teasingly. “Making breakfast
in bed for Naruto-niichan? How
sweet of you.” He laughed heartily
at that.
Sakura
began to blush, and then reacted angrily.
“Hey!” She then realized
that there were still people asleep in the house, and she lowered her voice
accordingly. “Don’t joke like
that. I just need less sleep than
him, so I wake up before him.”
This
only evoked more laughter from Inari.
“Sure, sure,” he said between laughs. Throwing her hands up in frustration, she left the living
room and began preparing breakfast.
Sakura
finished cooking, and set the table for three. “Inari-kun,” Sakura said as she passed by the living room,
“I made some for you, too, if you want.
Go on. The table’s all
set.” She continued back into the
room she shared with Naruto, and began to think of what Inari had teased her
about, and how she’d been feeling about Naruto recently. Feeling the call of nature, she entered
the bathroom.
As
she washed up, her thoughts were still on Naruto. She looked into the mirror and saw a smile on her face. Something about that smile seemed very
familiar. She had seen it
somewhere else on someone else. In
a flash, she realized. That was
the same smile that touched her mother’s face when she was gazing on her
husband. It was the amorous smile
that touched her mother’s face whenever she talked about her husband. It was the smile shared between two who
love each other.
Sakura
was very surprised at the smile that touched her face. She was also confused. No, no! She thought, shaking her head.
This is Naruto we’re talking about. This isn’t Sasuke-kun!
Sasuke-kun should be getting this smile, not Naruto…
She
exited the bathroom and returned to the room where Naruto was sleeping. Kneeling down by Naruto, she began to
blush as she looked down at him. He
looks so peaceful… Slowly, her hand drew nearer to
Naruto. Blushing even a little
more, she cupped her hand on Naruto’s cheek, and froze there for a moment.
Naruto
slowly awoke, feeling something…off.
Slowly, it dawned on him.
His eyes still closed, he realized that someone was touching his
cheek. Naruto, who had never
experienced any close human contact like this, felt warm and cared for:
feelings that he had rarely felt all his life, and certainly never to this
degree. Knowing that a smile was
touching his mouth, he shifted position slightly, almost snuggling closer to
the hand on him.
Soon,
he heard a whisper. “Naruto. Naruto, wake up. It’s time to wake up, Naruto.” Slowly, he opened his eyes, to see
Sakura looking down on him with a smile that he could only describe as
tender. Her eyes were slightly
narrowed, and the corners of her lips were twisted slightly upwards. Knowing that he had to move, he
reluctantly began to sit up as Sakura withdrew her hand. “Breakfast is ready, Naruto-k…” Sakura
paused, realizing that she was about to say Naruto-kun. “K…K…k…come on. Let’s go,” she finished, pulling Naruto
to his feet.
“We
have to hurry, Naruto,” Sakura said.
“The entire town wanted to wish us off, and it took way too long. We’ve got to leave now!”
Naruto
took his hand off Inari’s head, turned towards Sakura, and grinned. “Don’t worry, Sakura-chan. We’ll make it in record time.” Biting his thumb, he formed the seals
Boar, Dog, Bird, Monkey, and Sheep.
“Ninpo, Kuchiyose no Jutsu!”
There
was a large poof of smoke, blowing Sakura’s hair into the wind. When the smoke cleared, a frog about
the size of a horse stood, ready.
The frog was fully loaded with a saddle and reins.
“I
didn’t want to do this too often, Sakura-chan,” Naruto explained, “because it
takes a lot of chakra. But to make
up for lost time, we can ride this frog today.” Naruto laughed as he put his hand on the side of the frog’s
head. The frog’s eye looked
directly at Naruto, and suddenly its tongue came out to lick the side of
Naruto’s face.
Naruto
pulled himself into the saddle, and then extended a hand out to Sakura, who
smiled and took it. After getting
herself settled behind Naruto, she whispered in his ear, “Let’s go!” Naruto smiled, and pushed in on the
frog with his heels, causing the frog to start moving.
As
the frog took its first leap forward, Sakura suddenly felt like she was going
to fall off. Grabbing on to the
first thing she could to keep from falling, she managed to stabilize herself. Her hands wrapped around Naruto’s
torso, she began to blush. Not
exactly the knight in shining armor type thing I dreamed of… I dreamt of being
swept off my feet by a handsome knight, like Sasuke-kun, riding a beautiful
stallion. Instead, I’ve got Naruto
riding on a frog… Wait a minute! Sakura
suddenly realized what she had been thinking. I’m comparing this to the fairy tale
knight-in-shining-armor thing? I’m
comparing Naruto to a romantic
knight? As the journey
continued, she began to blush even deeper.
Naruto,
meanwhile, was doing his best to keep what he was sure was a stupid grin off of
his face. Man! I can’t believe my luck! Sakura-chan is riding with me… her arms
are wrapped around my waist… Naruto began to blush more than a
little.
Naruto
and Sakura both knew that their faces were red, but each secretly hoped to
blame it on the wind. After
slowing the frog to a stop, Naruto turned his head. “Enemy ninja can spot this jutsu miles away. From here we’re going to have to
walk.” Naruto got off the frog,
and extended a hand to Sakura. She
didn’t take it, but instead tried to slide off herself. She lost her balance, and began to
fall. She closed her eyes, and
waited for impact, but it never came.
Confused,
she opened her eyes, and saw that she was in the arms of Naruto. “Careful, Sakura-chan,” he said as he
slowly, reluctantly let her go.
The magic of the moment was dispelled with the presence of someone
else. Someone with an intent to
kill.
Eyes
widening as he sensed it, Naruto pushed Sakura away from him. Sakura, still confused, was trying to
understand what was happening.
Before her eyes, a flash of shadow appeared between her and Naruto for a
split second, and when it was gone, Naruto was gripping his stomach. Sakura gasped as she saw the cut on his
jacket, and the thin red line underneath.
“Very
impressive. Very impressive
movement, indeed,” boomed a voice throughout the forest. “But… your movement is nothing compared
to mine.” A black-garbed figure
about the size and build of Kakashi materialized on the path in front of
Naruto. He wielded a kodachi as
black as night. The blade of the
kodachi seemed to be crawling, as if made of millions of small insects. Naruto clutched his stomach even
tighter. “You are entering
territory of the Country of Thunder.
You will state your purpose, or die here.”
In
response, Naruto drew his tanto, and gripped his ninja-to. Sakura whipped out a kunai, and held it
at the ready. “Well,” the attacker
laughed. “I must assume you are
spies. I will enjoy ripping you to
shreds.” His eyes narrowed as he
looked at Naruto’s wound. Naruto
doubled over in pain, clutching his wound. “Ahh… it has now taken root. This sword… do you not recognize it? This is the Kodachi of Errythul Spawn.” The ninja cackled, raising the hair on
the back of Naruto’s neck. “Even
if you were to kill me, you would die from that wound. You have been tainted by a wisp from
the realm of demons.”
Naruto
looked down at the wound. He could
feel…something inside of him. Something
that didn’t belong. Something…
demonic, and not just Kyuubi. “Something demonic inside me, huh,” Naruto
mused. He laughed. “That’s alright. I’m sure he’ll feel right at home with
my other demon.” He closed his
eyes, focusing himself inward. When
his eyes opened again, Sakura took a step back. Naruto’s bright blue eyes had become dark, red, and
feral. Sneering at the ninja, he
crouched to the ground, and attacked.
Sakura
couldn’t actually see Naruto… he was too fast. All she could see was the dirt that Naruto was kicking up as
he ran at such high speeds. Naruto
jumped into the air, tanto and ninja-to in hand. Grinning, the attacker jumped into the air as well. Sakura couldn’t see the actual battle;
she could only hear the clang of sword on sword.
Naruto
cursed again. He hadn’t landed a
single hit. He touched down to the
ground, using the tanto to stabilize himself as he slid backward. Growling, he jumped back towards his
enemy. A cross-slash to the chest
was easily avoided. Screaming,
Naruto let his spin carry him as he went for the neck with his tanto. The tanto was blocked, but the ninja-to
had free movement. When the ninja
realized his error, he leapt back, and barely avoided a torso slash. When he landed, he pushed himself right
back into the fray. Naruto had to
go on the defensive. Downward
chop, chest slash, neck, stab, lower torso, and neck again.
Goddamnit! Naruto thought. I’ve got to do something about that kodachi.
Suddenly, he had a plan. Good
thing I read a lot of Rurouni Kenshin manga,
he thought with a laugh. He
twisted his ninja-to so that he would strike with the blunt end. Closing his eyes, he channeled all his
strength, and swung with all his might.
The sound of metal on metal overwhelmed his other senses, until he
finally saw part of a curved, black blade falling to the ground. Continuing without a second thought,
Naruto plunged the tanto into his enemy’s heart.
When the dust cleared, all Sakura
saw was Naruto with his short blade piercing the enemy. Her face brightened up, but then she
saw something else. Naruto was
bleeding. He was bleeding badly. The broken edge of the black kodachi
was stained red, and red poured from Naruto’s chest to stain the ground. Naruto slumped to his knees, his head
lolling back.
Sakura dashed over to her comrade,
plunged her kunai into the attacker’s skull, grabbed Naruto and jumped
back. Laying him down on the
ground, first she looked into his eyes.
His eyeballs had rolled back so his pupils were no longer visible. She began to inspect his wounds.
This
is not good, she thought. That blade was
cursed, but he might die of blood loss before he has to worry about the curse! Ripping the sleeves off
of her shirt, she began to bandage Naruto’s wounds. “I may
not be able to take care of that curse,” she muttered to herself, “but I’ll be
damned before I let him die of blood loss.”
*kodachi – smaller than a katana or ninja-to, but larger
than a tanto. Meant for quick
strikes rather than very powerful ones.
Ha Ha! I’m of
the opinion that every multi-chapter fanfic needs a deadly cliffhanger. Here’s mine. Don’t worry – I’ll update soon.
Thanks again for all of the wonderful reviews I got!
And by the way – anyone who knows who Errythul is truly is a
supernerd. He’s an evil deity in
the world of Dungeons and Dragons.
