“They will not both be happy to see me, Kakashi-sensei,” he said firmly. It was his belief that by now, Sakura would have forgiven him. Naruto, however, would not have. In fact, his best friend, his closest and most precious person, might never forgive him.
“They're going to find out eventually you're back. There's no point in delaying it. and this meeting's important.” Kakashi started walking again, expecting Sasuke to do the same. “Actually, I think they'll both be very glad to see you.”
Against his own better judgment, Sasuke decided that following Kakashi and facing Naruto and Sakura now was the same as facing them eventually in the future. So, as they approached the meeting place, why did his stomach flutter a tiny bit with the nerves he felt? Why did his recently retreated fangs threaten to make his gums warm again as they grew long with his agitation? His eyes settled on his two former teammates before he and their sensei were spotted. He wondered if they recognized him, or if he looked any different at all.
“Yo!” Kakashi greeted as he walked up to the table where his students were sitting. “I would have come sooner but I ran into someone.”
“That's gotta be your lamest excuse yet, sensei,” Naruto grumbled without looking up from the bowl of ramen he was eating from.
“It's not an excuse. Look who's back.” Kakashi put a hand on Sasuke's shoulder and pulled him to stand in front of him.
Curious, Naruto looked up and instantly met Sasuke's eyes. It took him only a heartbeat to recognize him. No one else could have those eyes... even if they had changed some. Naruto was struck dumb with shock. ::No... no... this... NO!::
Sakura swallowed her noodles and looked up asking, “Who - ?” but the rest of the simple question died in her throat as her eyes fell on Sasuke. Her heart fluttered uncontrollably in her chest as she gazed at him. If he had been gorgeous before... he was a demi-god now. “Sasuke... kun...” she murmured staring openly in shock, unable to do much else. Part of her mind registered that Naruto wasn't fairing much better, but it was the small part not taken up with memories and longings.
He drew in a light breath and greeted them with only a nod. His gaze, however, was locked solely on one very surprised looking pair of brilliant blue eyes. The air hummed with the very essence of Naruto. His energy spilled into the air around him, his scent was intoxicating, his luminous sapphire eyes and bright sunshine yellow hair were all the same, only sharper in clarity with his new senses. Sasuke didn't know what to say... what to do... and he was having a very hard time even beginning to look away from Naruto. So much time had passed and it was as if that searing kiss had happened only moments ago instead of years. Sasuke had learned more than combat and the use of his new powers from his maker... and Naruto was making it very hard not to think about such things.
Growling. Vaguely Naruto registered a cautious, warning growl in the back of his mind. Kyuubi was stirring, but not out of anger... the demon recognized a powerful predator close by and was warning his host to be careful. ::He's supposed to be dead... He wasn't supposed to come back...:: The fading ache in Naruto's chest - that almost gone ache of a broken heart that was healing - strengthened to the point where it was cruelly painful. Sasuke's new beauty went unnoticed by the blond. It was the new strength of his presence that Naruto felt - that Kyuubi felt. Somehow Naruto managed to tear his gaze away from that of the one who had haunted his dreams for three years and stood up. He had to get away. He had to get away from the only one that could break him. “I'll see you guys later...” he muttered. “I've lost my appetite...” and he was gone in a puff of smoke before anyone could protest.
::That was... strange...:: Kakashi cast Sasuke a sidelong glace, wondering what had happened between the boys when Sasuke left? All he knew was that Naruto had been inexplicably quiet and moody for a few months before suddenly returning to his cheery self. He'd thought it was because he missed his teammate. ::Guess I was wrong.::
A faint whisper echoed past Kakashi's ears. *I told you so...* as Sasuke's gaze met the Jounin's single-eye. His mouth had never moved, but Kakashi had heard it nonetheless and Sasuke looked to the empty place Naruto had once occupied. ::He will never forgive me... and I knew that. It hurts... like so many things have hurt in my life... Why can't I get over these pains?::
“Sasuke-kun...” Sakura broke into his thoughts suddenly. She had felt the tension thicken and now she felt the need to be her usual friendly self. She didn't understand what had happened between Naruto and Sasuke that last night three years ago any more than Kakashi did, but Sasuke was back! “You... Sugoi, Sasuke-kun! You've changed...” Her eyes were large and she knew it, but he was so pretty and sexy and hot that she couldn't help but stare. She couldn't wait to tell Ino!
Sighing, Kakashi sat down in the seat Naruto had vacated and motioned for Sasuke to sit down. It looked like he'd have to tell Naruto about their next mission later.
----------The Woods----------
Panting, Naruto finally stopped running and leaned against a tree, trying to get air back into his lungs. How long had he been running? He didn't know and didn't care. All he knew was that he had to put as much distance between himself and Sasuke as possible. ::Why...?!:: He wanted to hate Sasuke, to curse him, but he couldn't... He'd hated him at first, but the hate had evaporated, leaving behind heartache and disappointment. Eventually he'd realized what it was that made him go after Sasuke every time he ran, and why he forced him away three years ago. He'd had a crush on Sasuke. ...No... He'd been in love with Sasuke, but he'd been too dense to realize it. It had taken that ultimate betrayal to make him realize... and by then it had been too late. Sasuke was gone, and it was partially his fault. But he wasn't supposed to come back!! Not when Naruto had finally begun to heal!! Naruto sat down at the base of the tree and put his head in his hands, too tired and hurting too much to even think.
Lucky for him, there would be a short reprieve before having to face his troubled heart again.
----------Two Nights Later----------
The moon hung like a big silver disc on a chain of stars about the neck of the night sky. A deeper shadow slipped through the open window of one unsuspecting loudmouth's room moving in on the darkness of a drifting cloud. He moved without sound completely and he heard every nuance of the sleeping form in the rumpled and messy bed. Reaching the bedside he leaned over and studied the serene and sleeping face of one Uzumaki Naruto, the only person, other than his brother, to ever grab his attention so firmly. *Naruto...* his mind voice purred softly before he could stop himself. As the new Sasuke he tended to act a little more and think about the same depending on the situation. Also, vampires tended to be on the virile and somewhat open side. What did the most dominant creature in the world have to fear from being open and exposing themselves after all?
Naruto shifted in his sleep, his face scrunching in discomfort as Kyuubi sensed the invasion of personal space and began to growl. The fox urged him awaken to deal with the dangerous one near by. Naruto's eyes fluttered open and he looked up... and flew to the other side of the room.
“What the HELL are you doing here?!” he demanded, furious that Sasuke dared come and bother him in his own room.
“We need to talk,” he said simply and sat on the edge of Naruto's bed without an invitation or hesitation. then he waited his black eyes never leaving the blond haired youth. Naruto's scent was bewitching and it filled his nostrils teasingly. He was surrounded by it, the rich scent that had haunted his dreams like a ghost. The old Sasuke had only been able to smell the tantalizing aroma that was Naruto’s own personal scent on a very small scale. The new Sasuke could drowned in it quite happily. He felt his canines sharpen and he pressed his tongue to one to restrain them. He'd already fed tonight... though lightly. He could wait for more and he would.
“I have nothing to say to you except get the hell out of my room!!” Naruto yelled, not moving from the corner he had fled to. He didn't want to talk to Sasuke... didn't want there to be the chance of them becoming friends again... of getting hurt again. He was determined to hate him, WOULD hate him, and it certainly helped Naruto's cause that Kyuubi had decided to dislike Sasuke as well.
“I would have thought you would have matured a little Naruto...” *And you, damn Kyuubi Kitsune, either shut up or be shut up...* Sasuke wasn't sure if the fox demon was capable of speaking to him but Sasuke was more than capable of sending him the message loud and clear.
“I prefer not to associate with traitors,” Naruto growled, not noticing Sasuke's voice in his head since it was directed at his boarder and not at him. Though he did wonder why Kyuubi's growl increased ten-fold.
“The only thing I have ever betrayed... was you. and that is why we have to talk,” Sasuke stated it matter-of-factly, as though it was obvious. *I'm only going to warn you once more... silence.*
“Exactly. Which is why I'm giving you to the count of ten to get the hell out of my apartment before I slit your throat.” The corner Naruto had fled to just happened to be right by his dresser, and the top shelf was full of weapons. He grabbed a kunai and glared at Sasuke, ignoring the growing volume of Kyuubi's growl. “One... Two...”
Sasuke was in front of Naruto. It was just like that. The blond hadn't even seen him move, in fact Naruto hadn't even blinked yet and there was Sasuke and Naruto with his back in the corner couldn't go anywhere. Something warm suddenly trekked over Naruto's hand sluggishly. Apparently Sasuke was faster than Naruto could ever imagine because the poor boy could only now recognize that the kunai he'd been holding was now turned into the attack position and buried to the hilt in Sasuke's liver, a shot that would certainly have the Uchiha youth dead in all of about ten minutes. If Sasuke had been normal. Naruto, not knowing this, also did not know that although he could be weakened by blood loss the only thing that could kill him was a wooden stake directly through the heart. Sasuke imagined that Naruto’s surprise would be monumentous when it all finally settled into place in his somewhat disorderly mind.
“Damn,” Naruto said smoothly, just managing to hide how flustered Sasuke was making him by being so close, and pushed the kunai deeper. He would kill him. He had to kill him. It was the only way to make sure he was never hurt again. “And here I was hoping to save killing you for later in a place where I wouldn't have to clean up the mess.”
Sasuke's voice was steady as he felt the blade slice deeper. Pain was a lot easier to deal with when the fear of death did not accompanying it. “There won't be a mess,” he said and then pushed Naruto against the wall behind him burying the kunai deeper still. “Because I'm not going to die...” and then Sasuke simply rested his forehead against Naruto's and stared at him. “Not until two things have happened. Top on that short list being at least making you understand me... like I should have from the very beginning, when we had actually become real friends.” It was as if this guy didn't have a kunai buried in his gut and blood oozing out.
“We were never friends,” Naruto ground out as he tried to retreat into the wall. Anything to get away! “That was a sick lie you fooled me with. I was just your amusement. Not anymore.”
He pulled the kunai out and drove it in again with more force, enlarging the hole in Sasuke's stomach. “Why won't you die?!” he asked, a hint of desperation in his voice.
“Because Naruto.... I'm already dead,” Sasuke murmured and waited for the words to sink in completely. His Other Senses monitored the blond for his emotions and surface thoughts never delving deeper for curteousy's sake. The Kyuubi was still growling, but Sasuke decided he'd let it slide for now. Just this once really.
“W-what...?” Naruto stammered. That was NOT the answer he'd been expecting!
“Living dead... un-dead... I'm not going to keep secrets from you any more. I'm here to lay it all out. Whatever you want to hear from me… and since you asked, I found a way to defeat Itachi. It was a rash decision, but regretting it won't change it. and to be honest I don't regret it. Giving up my strong pulse and heartbeat and gaining so much in their stead...” he shook his head faintly clearing his train of thought. Sometimes even faint Hunger had him rambling. Vampires were so open. He really didn't like that instinct which was intense with familiar people. If he wasn't careful he'd be telling Kakashi-sensei things his sensei really didn't need to know.
Naruto's eyes widened as that sunk in. He understood now why Kyuubi had taken such a dislike to Sasuke. He wasn't human anymore.
“Oh god...” he choked out. “Oh god... oh my god...” Had this been his fault? Had he driven Sasuke to give up his humanity? When he finally regained his power of speech Naruto said, his voice thick, “What is it with you Uchihas and giving me trouble? I just want you to leave me alone...”
Sasuke's entire persona chilled about twenty degrees. “What... does that mean?” Sasuke did NOT like the sound of that. ::If Itachi has so much as done more than TALK to Naruto... he will die before the sun rises tomorrow night. I will lure him out the quickest way or go to him... but he WILL die...:: It was his possessive side speaking loud and clear, but that wasn’t a thought in his mind at the moment, and Sasuke didn’t care. Itachi was really going to know fear and pain – lots of pain – by the time that Sasuke was through with him.
“Your freak of a brother's still after me...” Naruto answered almost timidly, intimidated by Sasuke's sudden chill. He'd forgotten about the gore his hand was stuck in. “He's come for me four times since you left.” He managed to muster some of his confidence again. “But at least I only had to worry about being bothered by one Uchiha... You just had to come back and make my life more miserable, didn't you?”
Sasuke growled low in his throat and turned his face towards the window. The vicious predator in him wanted to go after the bastard now and rip his still beating heart from his chest after toying with him, like a cat will toy with a mouse before eating it. Or maybe he'd keep him alive for a few days and use him as a blood supply then kill him slowly... Sasuke derailed that train of thought sharply and with more than a little difficulty. How long had his thoughts been that vicious? From the beginning of the conversation? He forced his eyes back to focusing on Naruto. “I had to come back to take both Uchihas out of your life...” One pale, elegant hand brushed lightly at the bangs spilling over Naruto's bare forehead. All the moving Naruto was doing had forced Sasuke to retreat from the intimacy of resting forehead to forehead with him. He was a little disappointed but he would be as patient as he had the ability to be. As a vampire, Sasuke had learned that it was impossible to resist the sensual, the tempting, and the pleasurable. It was a vampire's lot in life to hold to those things and Naruto, to him, was all of the above.
“It would kinda help if you GOT THE HELL AWAY FROM ME and GOT OUT OF MY APARTMENT!!” Naruto roared. The touch to his forehead was the last straw. He'd had enough of this! Violently, he shoved Sasuke away, his hand separating from Sasuke's gut with a wet squelch. “What part of 'go away' don't you understand?!”
Sasuke let his hands fall to his sides. He didn't need to look to know that his flesh was already healing right before Naruto's very eyes. He could feel the burn caused by the speed at which his cells regenerated. His too-dark eyes took in Naruto's excited state and then he looked out the window. “You're hurt...” he said at last and then touched his now completely healed stomach. “I understand... I'll try again.” ::I need to calm my temper... Itachi can wait. Naruto's friendship... or at the least his forgiveness comes first so that when I kill my brother – if it is Naruto’s wish to be rid of the Uchiha name forever – I can take care of myself too and leave everyone free of the cursed Uchiha existence.::
Naruto scoffed, not fazed in the least by the fact that Sasuke had healed so quickly. It wasn't very different from him fast healing ability thanks to Kyuubi's chakra. He said with firm coldness, “You don't understand. You never understood.” He wasn't sure he wanted to know what Sasuke meant by "I'll try again". But he was sure that he wanted him gone. “Just go. I never want to see you again.”
His stormy gaze resettled on Naruto from the window, tearing his gaze from the darkness outside. Already the loss of blood from Naruto's kunai was waking the Thirst strongly, his veins tightening, pinching, and aching for a resupply. If he didn't leave soon Naruto could very easily become prey instead of ... future companion. The serious look on Sasuke's face broke suddenly, turning almost tender, and before Naruto knew it - moving as fast as he had moved when he'd impaled himself on Naruto's kunai only moments before - Sasuke gathered Naruto into his arms and planted a gentle kiss on Naruto's bang-feathered forehead. Then he was gone. Completely. Naruto was probably even uncertain as to whether that had actually happened or not, however Sasuke's voice whispered into the room (truthfully he whispered to Naruto's mind, but the blond wasn't savvy enough to catch onto that) *You will see me again... it is my turn to refuse to give up...*
Naruto waited a moment to make sure Sasuke had really gone before letting his legs give out and sliding down the wall to the floor. His forehead burned where Sasuke had kissed him. A heartbeat later he remembered the gore on his hand and forced himself back up to his feet, throwing the kunai out of his window into a dumpster and heading for the bathroom to scrub his hands and face until every trace of the Uchiha was gone. But nothing could stop the burning... could erase the sensation of Sasuke's lips on his skin... Cursing his weakness around his former friend Naruto went to sleep on the couch. He was afraid of the dreams he'd have if he fell back asleep in his room at the moment.
