---------------------------------------------
Two weeks have passed since that day of vague answers and heartbreak. Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura made it their late night hobby to visit Kakashi at the hospital. Kakashi didn’t mind. He contented himself to playing against each of them in games of shogi and go. Naruto learned how to play but he still kept losing.
Naruto begged Shikamaru and Hinata to keep their eyes on Kakashi while he and his team were away. Shikamaru objected because of how troublesome it was but he relented when Naruto attacked him with his puppy-dog eyes. Hinata didn’t object to it. She agreed without much hesitation.
Although Shikamaru didn’t want to admit it, Kakashi turned out to be quite a challenger for him. And he was enjoying it as well. They played against each other at go or shogi whenever they saw each other and they each won and lost occasionally.
Hinata was another matter. She had no idea what to do around him and always ended up sitting on the chair stiffly while touching the tips of her index fingers together. Kakashi felt bad for Hinata whenever she had to sit so stiffly. So he decided to talk to her. And after a while, the two of them became used to each other. She spoke often of her family and team. Occasionally she’d speak about she and Neji getting used to each others’ company.
Tonight in particular, Hinata was the one that was designated to watch Kakashi. She spoke to him without her stutter which made it easier for Kakashi to speak because it seemed to him that whatever he said would probably make her run away>
>
“Kak“Kakashi-san, how much do you know about Naruto-kun?” Kakashi scratched his head. “Quite a bit. Especially about what kind of ramen he loves.” Hinata touched the tip of her index fingers together again and inwardly, that made Kakashi nervous. “Do you know about his…” The last part was mumbled.
Kakashi felt utterly puzzled. “Huh? Could you repeat that?” Hinata blushed and swallowed hard. “Do you know if he likes anyone?” Kakashi scratched his head for a moment before a light bulb went off in his head. “No. He doesn’t have his eye on anyone. Actually, he only has his eye on ramen.”
Hinata nodded but felt embarrassed. “Do you like Naruto?” Hinata felt her cheeks flush red automatically at that question. “I-I-I…” Kakashi put an arm on her shoulder. He tilted his head. “I won’t tell anyone.” Hinata nodded. “Yes…I do…”
Kakashi pondered for a moment. “Have you told him?” Hinata shook her head. “I’m afraid…that he’ll just laugh at me…and make fun of me for something so stupid.”
I know he would…
Kakashi shook his head. “Come on, Hinata. You know he’s not like that. He’ll beat up anyone that makes fun of you or hurts you. Even if it‘s himself.” Hinata could feel her cheeks reddening more but she couldn’t help but smile a little. “You’ll never know how he feels about you unless you try.”
Hinata pondered for a moment at those words. Her thoughts made her wonder if Kakashi was in love once. His words made sense yet the actions were hard. It’s not an easy thing to tell someone you like or or love them for that matter.
“Kakashi-san, have you ever been in love?”
Oh…I shouldn’t have blurted that out…
Kakashi tilted his head thoughtfully. “Yes. But she has been gone for a long time. I never had the chance to tell her how I felt. And in the end it was too late.”
Hinata’s eyes widened. No wonder he told her that. It was his advice. And she decided to take it before it was too late.
Just then, Shikamaru came lazing in. He yawned as he pointed at Kakashi and said, “Rematch” in half a yawn. Kakashi grinned as he nodded and he pulled out a go board and stones. He turned to Hinata. “Bye Hinata. See you later.” Hinata nodded and nervously shuffled out as Shikamaru lazily walked in.
----------------------------------------------
Sakura arrived at the hospital a few hours later. She didn’t go to Kakashi’s room but went to the roof. She sat on one of the water towers and buried her face in her hands.
She cried. She cried with all her heart. She cried because she felt weak. cri cried because she couldn’t protect those precious to her. She cried because her heart was shattered. She cried because of Sasuke.
Sasuke. She was avoiding the subject of Sasuke every time it was mentioned. She avoided the flesh and blood Sasuke. After that night, she never felt the same.
She wore a mask of happiness to hide her shattered heart. She didn’t want people to worry about her anymore. She made a promise not be weak.
Her heart hurt more than anything else on her. It wasn’t a new feeling. She’d felt it many times before. The only exception was that this time, she’d been the one that caused it.
She wiped away her tears with her black t-shirt. She took out a tissue and blew her nose. She gazed at the sky. She often came up to the roof to cry out her pain. Although it helped, she wished it wasn’t there in the first place.
---------------------------------------------------
The young chuunin’s eyebrow twitched. He was trapped. He couldn’t do a K.O at so late a time. His opponent would destroy him now. His head slumped.
Damn, I’m dead…
“I…forfeit.” Shikamaru soon regained his lazy posture like he hadn’t even lost it. He yawned and thres ars arms behind his head to support it.
Kakashi grinned as he finally won a game of go after a losing streak of two days. He won by sixteen moku. Kakashi yawned and fell back on the pillows.
Shikamaru gazed out the window. “Hm…still early. Wanna play another game?” Kakashi shook his head and closed his eyes. Shikamaru shrugged. “Well, I’ll put the board back and go. Such a long way home. How troublesome…”
Kakashi grinned under his mask at that trademark saying of his. His eyes opened slowly and gazed out the open window. It was a cool night. The wind traveled through his mop of hair and blew a few loose strands to his eyes.
His injuries were healing properly. He no longer needed the oxygen mask as he could properly breath on his own. The bleeding finally stopped so he didn’t have to change bandages anymore. All in all, everything was doing well.
So well that he fell asleep instead of fainting.
---------------------------------------------------
Sakura ran along the hospital’s corridors and eventually came to Kakashi’s room by the vending machine.
She poker her head in and smiled as she found Kakashi asleep. She slowly crept in and walked to the side of his bed.
She felt her heart sink a little as he still appeared to look dead. His pale skin blended with the white sheets and he was still as thin as ever. She traced her finger over the scar that ran through his eyelid and cheek.
Wait…he’s asleep.
With a mischievous grin, she placed her finger lightly over his mask before slipping it into the fabric and gently pulling it down. She froze at the sight.
Wow…
The face he had kept hidden from people for so long was finally revealed. And he didn’t look bad. Actually, that would be an understatement. His skin was milky white underneath the mask. His nose was not big or underdeveloped. His lips were full yet it wasn’t in a feminine manner.
What the hell kind of idiot hides this kind of face!?
He looked quite youthful. But then again he wasn’t even that old. But he looked to be around his late teen years. His face reminded her of Sasuke’s. Pale and stoic. Yet nowadays Sasuke’s was warmer. Kakashi and Sasuke seemed to have switched places. Sasuke was now the warmer one while Kakashi was the more distant. At least more distant than usual.
I kind of like it this way, though…Sasuke is more dependable.
But Kakashi is not…
Much to Sakura’s horror, Kakashi’s sharingan eye blinked open. She felt unnerved as his unnatural eye probed her. He then turned his eye down. He opened his other eye. “You were looking at my face?” Sakura nodded. She waited for her punishment to come. But it never did.
Instead, Kakashi slowly sat up and gazed at Sakura with his shadowed eyes. Sakura could feel her heart dropping lower as she stared into his eyes stiffly. His eyes were tired and worn from this lifetime. He had seen much that shouldn’t be seen and felt what shouldn’t be felt. His eyes were glassy and they lost the warmth he had always put up as a façade.
Like everybody else…
Many ninja lacked emotions because they have hidden it all this time. Naruto put up a façade. He wanted to hide his anger and depression from the villagers. Sasuke put up a façade to hide his ambition. Sakura put up her cheerful façade to mask her weakness.
Kakashi was no different. He put up two. One to hide his face and one to hide his soul. She just didn’t understand why he would. Barely anyone knew much about him. The closest people to know anything about him would be Tsunade and Jiraiya.
But I’m sure they don’t know a lot either…
Yet he and all the others would always put up a different face for people to see. They never let anyone see what they truly felt.
Sakura was tired of living that way. She wondered if her teammates were too. And if they were, why did they still keep it up?
Kakashi rubbed the back of his neck and then his lips curved into a sincerele. le. “Ugly aren’t I?” Sakura could feel the bottom of her jaw dropping.
That mission must’ve knocked out his brains!
“Of course not! Are you crazy!?” Kakashi’s eyebrows curved into a sheepish expression. “Just kidding. Anyway, what do you think?” Sakura could feel herself blush and cursed her white skin for showing a clear streak of red. “Erm…you…uh, look…good.”
Why the hell did I say good!? Agh!
Kakashi fought back his laughter to avoid being hit by Sakura. Sakura blushing was not an unusual sight. She blushed often when she was flustered or just around Sasuke. Or when she was embarrassed or basically she just blushed whenever.
That’s a habit that won’t die too soon…
Inner Sakura literally blew dynamite up in her mind to blow her out of her stupor. “Why do you wear that mask anyway?” Kakashi shrugged his response. “Old habits die hard. I’ve been doing this since forever.” Sakura frowned. “But you don’t have to.” “I want to.”
Ugh, he’s so infuriating!!
Kakashi’s short, simple responses have always irritated her more than anything else, even with his Icha Icha series and his unbearable tardiness. They were vague yet were enough to answer the questions at hand. She never understood how he could do it. Not even the iceberg known as Sasuke could use that same, impenetrable method.
Kakashi felt his head droop in exhaustion. He knew the purpose of Shikamaru’s and Hinata’s visits. He understood that his students were worried but the point of it all was to make them forget about it. It was times like these where he wished that his students forgot about his existence.
I have a mission tomorrow…
He knew this new mission was to be dangerous. He had to do one simple thing: follow the two Akatsuki members, Itachi and Kisame. Yet it was not as simple as it sounded. Kakashi understood when he accepted this mission that he may not even come back alive or come back at all.
But that was the point, wasn’t it?
Sakura eyed Kakashi’s face curiously. It betrayed no emotion. It hardly ever did. Kakashi rarely found anything very disturbing. But then again, he was a mild pervert so that had to have taught him something about nastiness. Even if he did like it.
Pervert sensei…
He was content at knowing that none of his students knew about his mission. Especially Sasuke. Oh well. Even if he did fail the mission and die, he could at least die knowing his students wouldn’t get hurt. But he would first have to make sure that none of them knew he was leaving that exact night. And that went well so far…
Except Sakura had to come tonight…
Kakashi felt aggravated at this sudden interference. He couldn’t just tell her. She would try and stop him. But Kakashi didn’t want to hurt her nor did he want Sasuke and Naruto to find out quite yet. Luckily, he was a jounin. And he could do something that would neither harm her nor would she ever even know. At least that’s what he hoped.
Performing a few hand seals under his sheets, he performed a sleeping genjutsu that instantly lulled Sakura to sleep without her even realizing it. She fell forward but her body never hit the floor. Kakashi caught her easily and feeling glad he was already fully dressed, he leapt out of the hospital window.
He held Sakura’s sleeping form tightly as he leapt from roof to roof toward her house. Sakura’s body felt warm as it was held against his own cold form. He was slowly withering away. And this mission would finish the job if Kakashi was not careful.
He slowly crept to the window and slid it open as he balanced Sakura on his knee. Sakura stirred slightly and she unconsciously grasped his waist. Kakashi awkwardly slid into her room in a sideways fashion and gently put her onto the bed while slipping her arms away from his waist.
He let out a breath of relief and placed a kiss through his mask on her ‘wide’ forehead. She was as sweet as always. He felt his heart drop slightly. He’d miss her without a doubt.
He slid out the window and let it shut softly with a thud. He ran along the rooftops and stopped at Naruto’s apartment. Well, more like his window. Naruto was currently drooling as he snored. His body was sprawled over as his cap continued to seemingly eat his head.
I owe him something…
Kakashi dropped his hand to his pocket and pulled out a frog-shaped wallet. It seemed to be packed full as Kakashi it threw up and down. Kakashi had taken Naruto’s wallet when he hadn’t been looking. He was broke and hungry and planned to pay him back. He just hadn’t gotten around to it until now.
He opened the window and threw the chubby frog wallet next to Naruto’s fresh pair of ramen shorts.
Now he doesn’t have to look for it on Jiraiya anymore…
He leapt a few more blocks before stopping at Sasuke’s window. Sasuke was alert even when asleep. But his last misson appeared to have worn him out too much. He slipped his glove off his hand. He pulled out a kunai and lightly pushed the blade over the back of his exposed hand. It was another way of thinking to him. He pulled down his mask and lapped the blood up like a dog would lap up water.
As he lapped up his snack, he wondered what to do. He didn’t need to tell Sasuke anything. Whatever Sasuke chose to do was his own path. He didn’t have to owe him. What could he leave behind? He felt around his pockets and his gloved hand came upon something flat.
Well, it’s small but it’s something.
Kakashi disappeared in a puff of white smoke to the front of the gates. To his dismay, Gai and Anko were in his team. His life was certainly full of the cheerful people. Anko had apparently recovered enough in the past few weeks to come. Two other Anbu were standing with their masks in place. “Kakashi-san, your just in time.” Anko was a bit less quiet. “Hey yeah! Is something wrong?”
He’s never early…
Kakashi nodded. “Nope. Just doing a few things. Let’s go.” The five disappeared into the night.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Naruto fell of the side of his bed in an attempt to grab the large bowl of ramen in front of him. Unfortunately for him, it was but a dream.
“Yahhh!” He landed painfully on top of a large bump which knocked the wind out of him. He pushed off the floor and found the imprint of a frog on his stomach. He looked down and punched his fist into an open hand.
I found it!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Sasuke blinked his eyes as he sat up. He wanted to go back to sleep. But before he could, he found something catch his eye.
A picture.
It wasn’t there before. It was lying on his windowsill. He threw his legs onto the floor and walked to the window. He picked up the picture and stared at it with his sharing an, wondering if it was a trap. His eyes widened as he saw the people in it.
My family.
In this picture, there was an entire group of raven haired Uchiha. Many of which were in uniforms. He smiled slightly. His father was there with his usual stern face. His mother smiling into the camera. His brother smiling and holding a young Sasuke in his small arms.
Sasuke looked closer at the picture and found people he did not recognize but were standing next to some of the clan. Some hugging, some throwing their arms about each other. And some just extremely happy.
His gaze turned halfway to the left side in the middle of the picture. An Uchiha about 20 years old stood between two people with a mask over his head and a grin that could compete with Naruto‘s. One was a girl with sandpaper hair and a wicked grin with an anbu mask hanging above her head. She was probably about 17-18. The other was a teenager about 17 with an anbu mask also hanging over his hair. He grinned half-heartedly and there was a scar above his left eye…
“Oi, Sasuke!”
Sasuke snapped his head at the voice coming from the figure sitting on his windowsill. “What do you want?”
“Ramen! Come on let’s go!”
“No thanks.”
Sasuke glared at Naruto but found he was looking into his teammates puppy dog eyes.
Man, I’m becoming soft.
“…Fine.”
He followed Naruto as he ran with astounding vigorous speed toward Sakura’s house, completely forgetting about the picture tucked into his pocket.
-------------------------------------------------
Sakura woke up with an unusual feeling of foreboding. Sometime felt wrong, out of place. Like something was happening without her knowing.
Man, it’s woman’s intuition…
“Sakura-chan!!”
Naruto?
“Want to get some ramen!!!?”
Yep, it’s him.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Gai felt like crying. He was losing all his money and now had gone far in debt to his eternal rival. He blinked out a river of tears. “NO!!!! I lost again!!”
It was a game of 5-card poker. So far everyone had won a bit of money with the exception of Gai. And Gai was just too stubborn as usual so he bet much of his salaries and now had become deep in debt with Kakashi.
Anko enjoyed watching Gai’s many different emotions pop up so obviously. Smug, to bluffing, frustration, to panicking and so forth. Now he was just plain crimson from holding his breath for so long.
Kakashi put his cards down just as he was about to take everything Gai owned and muttered a small, “I forfeit.” Anko fell from her chair. The other two Anbu felt they’re masks slipping off their faces. Gai felt as if he had just been saved from certain death.
“Why the hell did you give up!? You could’ve taken him for all he was worth!” Kakashi grinned at Anko’s fuming face. “Now where would the fun be in that?” Anko felt herself slipping from her chair and laughing her ass off.
But this air of enjoyment was short-lived.
A barrage of metallic needles flew toward the group of five and in the next second, Anko ducked and pulled the other two Anbu with her while Gai sat frozen on the log. He shut his eyes waiting for the needles to pierce his body.
He waited but they never did.
Instead, he was flung to the ground by an unidentified flying object. He opened his eyes and tried focus them to see what it was that pushed him. The unidentified flying object was quite apparently Kakashi himself.
“Gai, don’t freeze or I’ll kill you myself.” Gai sighed in relief but he suddenly shivered. The air felt cold around him. He could see his own breath clearly. Kakashi stood up from under the log and looked all around.
They were trappedan ian ice dome. Ice overtook the ground and the air around them. Anko and the other two Anbu were banging from outside the white walls.
But they weren’t alone.
Kakashi could see two men standing in front of him. Twins. They were clad in thin white robes that to Kakashi’s disgust revealed their little selves. Gai crawled out. His own disgust was somewhat more evident than on his companion’s.
The two twins spoke in unison. “We are from the snow country. We are now of the akatsuki. Akatsuki has gained more members away from it’s original nine. We are well-known as the twins of the snow.”
Gai waved his hands at them. “Yeah, yeah. And by the way, you two snow twins are showing your snowballs. Is that intentional?” Kakashi let a out a long breath of air while the revealing twins shrugged. “It’s cold out here and we decided to wear white.”
Gai opened his mouth indignantly. “Who are you and what do you want?” The twins answered in unison. “We were never given names. We are just the twins. And we are just here to kill you. Nothing big.” “Why are you wearing that in this snow?” “We are comfortable with it.”
Meanwhile, Kakashi turned his gaze to the side of the dome. One of the nameless anbu was currently being crushed by Kisame’s weight. At least now Kakashi knew one of them was female. Anko and the other anbu were futilely trying to fight Itachi even though they were easy prey.
Gai pushed himself into a fighting stance. “Yosh!!! Let’s finish this! I’m getting cold!” The twins smirked and hurled themselves into the walls of the dome. Their figures were distorted but both Gai and Kakashi could see that metallic senbon were poised in their hands.
Gai uttered a small ‘ow’ before a barrage of senbon cluttered them both. Kakashi put his hands together and pulled down his mask. “Katon karyuendan!” The fire serpent flung through the barrage of needles and blasted a hole through the wall. Gai kicked a large hole through part of the wall.
“Ah, impressive. Too bad we fight below the belt.” Kakashi barely had time to register that before a senbon hit his hip. A little too close to his crotch for his comfort. Gai didn’t even try to register the meaning of the last words. And he was met by a needle to the thigh.
Gai pulled it out and breathed a sigh of relief.
Close!!
Kakashi pulled it out and pulled a face of disgust.
So they want to do it that way….
“I’m gonna get you for that!!!” Gai ran blindly into the face of many needles before poofing into a log. Gai reappeared and pulled one of the twins out the wall and kicked his genitals. Hard. Hard enough for them to become swollen and ugly hue of blue and black.
The other twin gritted his teeth. “You’ll pay for that. Now it’ll be a while before I can have my pleasure.” He threw a barrage of needles at Kakashi while Gai pondered those last words.
‘Have my pleasure?’ What does that mean?
Kakashi was somewhat less slow. He pulled another face of disgust before pushing his feet off the ground and dodging the needles.
Incest…
He grimaced as a needle pierced his left elbow and knee. He looked up to see a large porcupine. Or it could’ve just been Gai with his back semi-covered with needles. He was shaking on the ground and his body was hunched together. Kakashi ran over while dodging a large wave of snow and tried as hard as possible not to laugh in such an unusual situation.
Gai was clutching his own genitals. On the ground beside him were two needles covered in blood. He was clenching his jaw tightly and managed a ‘look out’ before passing out from shock and pain.
Kakashi turned around and was slapped a by a large white hand of snow before being flung to the opposite wall. The hand turned in to a tidal wave of snow and was hovering above it’s target, the human porcupine.
Kakashi blinked the blood back from his eyes and ran as fast as he could possibly run toward Gai. He was soon in front of the wave of snow and held his arms diagonal from each other. He could feel the snow crashing on top of him and then wrapping around his body. Soon he couldn’t move.
The snow tightened around him and he could feel the breath leaving his body. It tightened more and he could feel something crack. Then something breaking. Then he could feel a series of breaking. An extremely unpleasant feeling of squeezing was coming from his pants and he clenched his teeth to keep from crying out in pain. Then he could feel no more as blood gushed and poured out of his mouth as he passed out.
---------------------------------------------------------------
This totally sucks!
The cherry blossom was currently cursing in her mind as she sat next to the renowned iceberg of the Uchiha clan. She was blushing madly! After she swore over an exaggerated million times that it was only an impossible crush.
Shit shit shit!!!! Gah!! What is wrong with me!? It’s just a crush!
Not anymore.
Shut up! What do you mean!?
I’m not telling you. You told me to shut up. Find out yourself. Both of you are totally dense. Can’t even understand your own feelings.
Why can’t you tell me!?
Ugh. You keep losing people you care about and you still don’t get about the person you care for most?
What?
Okay. This is going to be a long explanation so sit tight. You know how it feels to lose people you care about. Like your teammates. You don’t want to lose any of them. But you don’t understand that the person you love is there. You just don’t want to admit it. But you used to be so willing to fight for it.
Sasuke-kun…But you said he wasn’t.
I never said that. Listen, I’m your inner you. I’m the true you. I am the substance of your thoughts. I think what you think. Just think of me as a conscience. I’m supposed to advise you. But I can’t do it if your too stupid to get it.
How is possible that I can even talk to you!?
That’s for me to know and you to never find out.
Sakura pondered about that a moment before a sudden voice interrupted her thoughts.
“Sakura.” Said girl jumped in her seat and turned her head to look at Sasuke. “You alright? You kind of spaced out.” Sakura tried to do some quick thinking. What was she supposed to say? ‘“Oh I was just talking to my inner self.”’ Not likely.
“Oh I was just thinking about some things. I tend to space out when I do that.”
Well, good enough.
Oh get some sense into your head!
I have sense!
‘Taku…Hopefully another loss wilt yot your mind going about Sasuke.
What!? What else am I going to lose!?
I’m not sure. Just hope you understand before that loss happens.
“Oh. I was just thinking about…” Sasuke mumbled the rest of the sentence. Sakura’s thoughts were interrupted by incoherent mumbling. “Huh? Repeat that.” Sasuke cleared his throat. “I was just thinking about that night.” Sakura blinked before her mind was suddenly filled with images of that night’s events. “Oh.” Sakura’s inner eyes widened at Sasuke’s so very visible blush.
He likes me.
No way! It’s just…hot in here. That’s all.
No it’s not. It’s actually pretty cool.
He doesn’t like me.
Yeah he does. Stop disillusioning myself and just tell him.
Why do you keep saying ‘me’ and ‘myself’?
Because I am you and vice versa. Just tell him or I’ll blurt it for you.
What!? How-
“Sakura.” Sakura once again snapped her head at Sasuke. “I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear from me after all of this but…”
He’s gonna say it.
No he isn’t.
Stop disillusioning myself and get on with it. Say it.
No! I’ll be so embarrassed.
Fine. I’ll do it anyway.
“I love you.”
Onyx orbs locked on jade green pools.
And soon, a loud booming familiar voice interrupted their little trance.

Oh man. Sappy ending in a way. I curse this ending. Oh well. A lot of romance stuff is sappy. I don’t like sappy endings much so I end up breaking them with the most ridiculous things I can think of.
These self conversations are confusing. I decided to write them in separate short forms so as not to confuse myself.
Well, if you actually read this and you were expecting smut, I’m sorry to disappoint you. I can’t write good smut unless I got a motivation. I actually like to write about things to do with blood… : P
