Author's note: Many, many apologies for taking so long with this chapter. Real life and other projects have been kicking my butt, but I worked until late last night - or early morning, whatever - to finally finish this chapter. It was a bit odd to jump back into this universe, so I hope it isn't too off!
Warnings: Sasuke's pov; present is set during the time Naruto expects Keiko while the flashback is set during his first pregnancy. Vague reference to the miscarriage, but mostly some fluff
I hope you'll like it!
Chapter 39
"You know I wouldn't pester you with this, especially not now, but would you consider attending the charity event this year?" Tsunade asked. There were people talking in the background who were abruptly cut off; she'd probably entered a room.
"No offense, but I'm not really in the mood to chatter with a bunch of rich people," Sasuke replied, trying his best not to sound too rude or curt. He'd never been interested in those charity events; he didn't have anything against charity, of course. He donated regularly, but he loathed the events organised by the hospital. Most of the rich people attending them and giving money only did so in the hopes of being mentioned in the press and they could only talk about themselves.
He had better things to do than listening to some guy blabbing on and on about how his investments were going. Especially now he couldn't be bothered with them.
"I know," she murmured. "How is he doing?"
He breathed out slowly, tapping his pen on his desk. "He's … doing better. Taking it day by day."
"And you?"
"I'm doing well. That doesn't mean I want to leave him alone for an evening, though," he said sharply. "And I don't think he's in the mood to mingle with people either."
"I understand, Sasuke, trust me, I do," she said and sighed. "Orochimaru has been asking after you, wants to discuss some of his new research."
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Sasuke said exasperatedly, "And let me guess: he's the one wanting me to attend the event?"
She hummed. "Guessed correctly. I'll tell him he'll have to find another moment to discuss his research with you."
"Thanks," he said relieved. He didn't mind discussing Orochimaru's research with the older man, but he just couldn't muster up any interest for it now.
"Sasuke?"
Looking up, he blinked when he saw his mate hovering in the doorway. "Naruto?"
"I'll leave you to it; I still have some files to look through," Tsunade told him. "Tell the brat I said hi."
"Tsunade says hi," Sasuke said obligingly when the call ended and he placed his phone on his desk. "You okay?" he asked, worry creeping up when Naruto just kept standing there. Rising up quickly, he crossed his study. "Are you in pain?" His heart thudded painfully and his eyes quickly crossed over Naruto's body, checking whether he could spot anything amiss.
"Oh no, nothing's wrong!" Naruto hastily reassured him, grabbing Sasuke's hand and pressing it tightly against his rounded stomach. "It's just – I was wondering … Can you feel the baby kick?"
"What?" he asked sharper than he intended to, but before he could say anything else, there was something faintly pressing against the middle of his palm.
The touch was barely there, not much heavier than the flutter of a butterfly's wings – but to Sasuke it was everything.
Everything he had thought he would never get to experience again. Everything he had thought he'd lost but was now given back to him.
Fingertips brushed underneath his eyes, catching some stray tears. "Can you feel it?" Naruto whispered; his eyes glowing for the first time in months.
Suddenly Sasuke was catapulted straight into one of his earliest moments with Naruto; the memory triggered by the Omega's words.
"I just don't know whether I'll be able to do it on my own, you know?" Honda said subdued, fiddling with her bracelet. "I thought I'd have Hiroki with me, but now I'm alone and - and I'm scared."
"Being scared is not strange; a lot of new parents – and even parents who already have children – are afraid," Sasuke said gently, closing her file. "You're stronger than you think you are, Honda-san, and this baby is very lucky to have you as his mother. I'm sure your parents are willing to help out as well."
She smiled softly and her hands came to rest on her rounded belly. "Yeah, my mother has offered to help me out; I can stay with my parents until I've found a place on my own."
"See, you're not alone," he said encouragingly. "Don't let your ex-partner get you down, okay? Just focus on your baby and on yourself; it's important you take care of yourself now."
"I will, thank you, Uchiha-sensei," she smiled, looking a bit more at ease now, and she rose up from the chair. "Thank you for your time today."
He inclined his head. "Take care and have a nice day."
"You too. Bye, Uchiha-sensei!"
The door clicked shut behind her and he uttered a soft sigh, stretching his arms. It didn't happen often that he had patients who became single parents. Usually it was because their partners died in an accident or due to illness, but sometimes – rarely actually, but it happened – they became a single parent because their mate broke off the relationship and left them on their own to deal with the pregnancy and the raising of the child afterwards.
Sasuke, so far, hadn't been able to comprehend how someone could just leave his mate and child behind as if they were nothing. A break up because the relationship was not going so well anymore, that could happen, yes, but how could one just simply abandon their own daughter or son?
He couldn't imagine turning his back on his own child. Never mind that Naruto would most definitely rip off his balls if he ever dared to contemplate that, he just couldn't understand how someone could simply decide to ignore their baby. It seemed inconceivable to him, but Honda – amongst a few others – was living proof that there were people out there who had apparently no trouble abandoning both their mate and child.
Shaking his head, he flipped open his planner to check when his next patient would arrive. The patient of three o'clock had cancelled, he remembered Karin announcing this morning, so that left him with a gap of half an hour, give or take a few minutes, with no patients to treat.
He guessed he could use this little bit of free time to call Itachi and discuss their dinner plans on Friday. He could wait until tonight to do that, of course, as his brother was still at work too, but why give up the chance of bothering him at his job? Itachi clearly had no qualms about bothering him when he was working, so he would just be returning the favour.
Who said Uchiha couldn't be petty?
Slipping his phone out of his pocket, he scrolled through his contact list and selected his brother's number. Right when he wanted to press on 'Call', a knock on the door resounded and he turned his head towards it with a frown.
"Yes?" Had his next patient unexpectedly shown up earlier after all?
Karin popped her head inside, looking mildly annoyed. "I'm sorry, Uchiha-sensei, but your -fiancé is here and he insists on seeing you now," she said, a tad sourly. She still wasn't completely over the fact that Sasuke was now off the market forever. He'd never even shown an inkling of interest in her, but apparently she still had harboured a smidgen of hope he'd return her crush one day.
"Naruto?" he murmured confused. Why would Naruto show up now? "All right, let him in."
"Fine," she said disgruntled, obviously having expected to hear a dismissal. She turned away from him, closing the door again, but he heard her say something through the wood – presumably telling Naruto he could enter the room.
Curiosity piqued, he stood up and walked around his desk, shoving his phone back into his pocket. His brother could wait until he'd heard why Naruto had shown up now.
The Omega was grinning mischievously when he slipped into the room, shutting the door right in Karin's face. "Hello, Sasuke."
That mischievous grin caused the dark haired man to feel somewhat wary and he leant against his desk, crossing his arms. "What are you up to now?" he asked suspiciously.
Placing a hand on his chest, Naruto pouted, "Why so suspicious? You don't trust your own mate?"
Having just entered his sixth month of the pregnancy, his belly was clearly outlined through the thin sweater he was wearing and black eyes were automatically drawn to it, hands itching to touch it even if it he hadn't been able to feel the baby kick yet. Naruto already had, naturally, and the first time the blond had felt their baby kick, it had been enough to make him cry.
The Alpha couldn't help but feel a bit jealous that Naruto could already feel their baby moving around while he still had to wait. Alas that was the fate of the one not carrying the child, of course.
"Not when you're grinning like that," Sasuke told him honestly, eyeing him carefully. "Spill. What brought you here?"
Then the seductive scent of low key arousal swept over him and he bit back a groan, digging his fingers into the edge of the desk. Fuck, of course. With September, the stronger heat season had started again and he could smack himself for nearly forgetting about that. Especially considering how he and Naruto had spent the earlier heavy heat session …
With the blond pregnant now, however, his scent was a bit muted; their heats not affecting them that badly. That wasn't to say that neither of them were affected right now, though …
Pupils expanding almost imperceptibly, Naruto crossed the distance between them quickly, looping his arms around Sasuke's neck and pressing their bodies close.
"Naruto, we can't. Not here," he said through gritted teeth, but his hands landed on slim hips, gripping them firmly. In spite of his refusal, his mind was already working out whether they would be able to get off quickly before his next patient would arrive. Maybe if they used Naruto's car …
"Well, we still have a bit of time, no?" Naruto asked, a bit breathless, and licked his lips. Then he shook his head sharply. "But no, wait, that's not why I'm here."
"Oh?" Sasuke raised an eyebrow, forcing himself to ignore his mate's enticing scent. "Why are you here then?"
His hands were promptly grabbed and pushed underneath Naruto's sweater until they were cupping his bare belly. "I wonder – can you feel our baby kick?"
"Can I what?" he asked distracted, but then he felt something moving for a few seconds against his left hand and he froze, staring down at Naruto's stomach.
He held still, very still, Naruto doing the same, as they waited for their baby to make himself known for the second time. Just when Sasuke was starting to think he had imagined the kick, he felt another one, firmer this time, against his right pinkie.
Awe filling him, he sank down on his knees and stared in amazement at Naruto's stomach, in which their baby was currently fussing around, kicking and pushing whenever Sasuke moved his hands around.
Pressing his ear against the rounded stomach, he murmured thickly, "I can feel him moving. I can feel our baby moving." He couldn't help but repeat it, needing to say it again just to let it sink in.
He could finally feel their baby move underneath his hands. Could feel him fussing and landing soft kicks. His punches and kicks weren't that strong yet, obviously, but – Sasuke could feel him moving around. There were simply no words to describe how that felt.
Their baby boy, moving underneath his papa's hands …
Fingers raked through his hair and a smile was audible in Naruto's voice when he said softly, "Yeah, you can. Amazing, isn't it?"
"Yeah, it really is," he said, turning his head to kiss Naruto's belly button through his shirt.
'Amazing' wasn't enough to do this experience justice. But it came close enough to describe it.
"I can feel our baby move," Sasuke choked out, more tears spilling down his cheeks.
Their baby was moving underneath his hand, pushing against his fingers, letting him and Naruto know he or she was fine, doing well, growing more and more every day …
After weeks of being afraid, of fearing he would wake up to blood in the sheets again, to Naruto screaming in pain, he felt hope blooming up in his chest. Hope that this time things would be better.
That this time their baby would fight until the end.
That maybe, just maybe, everything would be fine after all and they would soon hold their little baby boy or girl in their arms.
When he looked up, he met blue eyes, shimmering with tears. But the smile adorning that perfect face was as bright and blinding as the first time he'd witnessed it. "Yeah, you can," Naruto murmured, placing his own hand over Sasuke's, the other slipping around the Alpha's neck.
Then they were kissing, their hands pressed against Naruto's stomach, feeling their baby move and fuss and tumble.
When Sasuke tasted tears, they tasted of happiness and love and the careful hope that this time around they would have a happy ending after all.
