Iruka walked around the cabin few times hoping to settle his mind. When that didn’t work retrieved his traps from the back porch. It was easy to locate footprints in the freshly fallen snow and he looked for animals whose tracks were singular knowing this was not the season for them to have small offspring at home. He felt the approaching ninja before Ryuu dropped down next to him. He looked over his shoulder at her and decided to take a gamble. He quietly asked, “Can you teach me how to walk without disturbing the snow?”
Her voice was sad as she replied, “I am sorry little one, but such a thing cannot be done. Each step we takes disturbs the snow in some manner. If we think of the snow like family your way is much kinder. It crushes it all down so each little flake remains next to those it is close to. My way disperses the top layer thinly across a wide area so no matter how much each little flake loves the one it is next to they will have to melt and evaporate before they can see each other again.”Iruka closed his eyes; his father had once told him that about walking through mud puddles. They were on vacation in Grass Country during the rainy season. His mother had introduced him to someone special there – a person she said his heart would always remember and know.“Who are you?” he whispered almost afraid to hear the answer. He kept his eyes shut knowing that when he opened them she would be gone. When he turned around there were a set of deep footsteps connected to his in the snow. Without saying a word she had confirmed what he already knew while raising even more questions.
Iruka went back in the house and warmed himself by the fire before climbing back into bed with Kakashi. The jounin’s eyelids fluttered and he groaned sleepily without truly waking up. Iruka focused on Kakashi’s left eye; he had taken great pains to hide the scar horizontal scar but he knew it was there. Just like Ryuu-sama Hatake Kakashi’s face bore a vertical scar.
It made him remember what his mother had whispered each night before he went to bed: There is a strange religion overseas Iruka. It focuses on a man killed on a cross who rose from the dead. The cross they hold dear is horizontal and vertical. Just as that cross is special and formed when a horizontal line meets a vertical one so is yours my little boy. You will know the counterpart to your line and she will know you. At that time what is now deemed lost forever will once again become known to you.”Enough had gone on for Iruka to suspect his mother was speaking of Ryuu but the same could be applied to Kakashi too. Shisui bore a horizontal scar on his chest right above his heart. He was practicing the body flicker jutsu by playing catch with himself and mistimed throwing the shuriken. They formed a cross when he laid his head on Shisui’s chest. The love Shisui had for him was perfect and he loved him absolutely, unconditionally in return. He didn’t love Kakashi, probably never would; but within the space of that probably never would there was a small chance that if he had met this Kakashi…. This Kakashi who was vulnerable, funny, respected him and accepted Naruto back in the village there was a tiny chance he could.Iruka closed his eyes imaging what home would be like if he and this Kakashi were to return to Konoha. He fell into a dreamless sleep after reminding himself that he was not a genin. He taught them. Only children made the mistake of falling in love on missions. As a teacher he went through great lengths to ensure his students knew how to perform the reality checks to ensure it wouldn’t happen. Even while knowing Kakashi wasn’t Shishi and they truly weren’t lovers the events of the previous night remained with him. Rui had often tangled tongues with Shishi but last night had been different. They orgasmed while in character but each knew the other was holding themselves back and not truly getting caught up in the moment.Last night had been unrestricted. It had been him, Iruka kissing Kakashi and what he felt in those kisses was enough to frighten him.
The next morning Iruka dressed and made breakfast by rote. He woke Kakashi and went outside to gather wood and fresh snow while the other man ate. He wasn’t ready to face him
Kakashi was equally grateful for the distance. Kissing Iruka the previous night had brought up feelings he couldn’t remember since …never. Kakashi took another bite of gruel and amended his thought. He had felt that way once before. It was an unknown phantom from one of the best and worst nights of his life.Kakashi closed his eyes and forced himself to concentrate on breathing slowly and deeply. He was still trying to center himself when Iruka walked in.Iruka recognized the exercise. It was one that he always asked Anko to teach to his genin. He was capable of doing so and there were other jounin he could have asked but squirmy seven year olds seemed absorb lessons on how be still and to use breathing techniques to remain calm from a person who absolutely terrified them.Iruka was grateful for the wood in his arms as he went about his chores. He attempted to hide behind the bundles as he placed the wood he’d chopped that morning on the screened in porch and moved the oldest cord into the tack room at the back of the house to dry then transferred that from the back of the house to the small pile next to the fireplace. Once that was complete he moved the melted snow and snow he’d just gathered in the same manner. It was still the dead of winter and he didn’t want to risk the pipes freezing. Kakashi knew there wasn’t much he could do and Iruka tip-toeing around him really didn’t help matters so he decided to do what he could. They most likely would be fishing today since it was their primary source of income so he set about checking the poles Iruka had carved and strings they used as fishing wire for signs of damage. He replaced two of the strings on the longer poles then cut away the frayed sections. He measured the shorter but intact fragments then wrapped them around twigs Iruka had designated for that length. Kakashi once again found himself admiring the chuunin’s resourcefulness. Once they reached the lake Iruka would find branches long enough to anchor into the ground so the longer pieces could be used for fishing while the shorter strands were often used to string together their catch.Iruka retrieved the sled and performed a final inspection before heading towards the lake. The trip was made without their usual banter and even their game of “I Spy” remained purely functional instead of devolving into ridiculous speculations at several points. Shibata-san’s generous donation of clothing allowed them to fish longer but Kakashi was still without a winter coat. He was able to pick up several small pieces of wood while monitoring the lines closest to him but couldn’t stray very far from the fire. They tried to put up a united front while they were in town but several of the more perceptive villagers made enough comments about the difficulties of love and making up being the best part that they knew it was failure. They returned the cabin in silence, had their evening meal and played a game of shougi to compare what they’d seen then went to bed.
After three days of relative silence Iruka needed company and human interaction. For the first time since Kakashi had joined him Iruka packed all but two sets of towels needed to bathe and took them and one of the larger pots with him. Once they reached the lake he placed one set of towels in the cast iron pot and set it close to the fire.
After an hour passed he handed it to Kakashi, “Here wrap up and stay warm.”“Thanks,” the jounin replied dryly but the Iruka had already placed another set in the pot where the one he was wearing came from.Another hour passed and the chuunin swapped the towels. Kakashi realized they would be at the lake longer than normal when Iruka placed a third set in the pot to warm and began scaling one of the fish he’d caught. Normally they ate riceballs for lunch.Kakashi understood why Iruka had begun heating a fourth set of towels when the midday breeze picked up. Even with the most recently warmed placed next to him, the chill was becoming unbearable. For once he allowed his common sense to overrule his pride and he called out to his companion, “Rui!”Iruka had caught several large fish but not the one whose shadow mocked him when he heard his pseudonym being summoned. He had become so engrossed in fishing he had forgotten about Kakashi. Almost two hours had passed since he’d changed the towels out for warm ones and cooked lunch. Even Kakashi had better sense than to get any closer to the fire while garbed in such non-traditional attire. He pulled his lines vowing to catch the behemoth next time as he trod back across the frozen lake. Kakashi was shivering uncontrollably when Iruka made it back to him. He suppressed the urge to yell and instead quietly asked him, “Why didn’t you call for me sooner if you were getting too cold?”“I knew you were busy and didn’t want to rush you,” Kakashi replied quietly. Questioning Iruka’s timeliness was too close to the argument they’d had which sent him running to Giha.“Don’t be so silly next time,” Iruka said quietly. “I don’t want you to get sick again.”The chuunin changed out the towels and began packing up his catch. He set the warm pot close to Kakashi but made sure it was tied so properly so it wouldn’t lurch as he began the journey to Kaibara.Iruka went to the general store first. The Shibata family still had not returned so Emiko purchased a small fish for herself. He then went to the richer part of town and let the grand ladies begin another self-induced bidding war. From there he went to the poor section and traded fish for other goods. Once that was done took the extra he’d caught to the restaurant.“Rui! My little fox demon you’ve returned! I was starting to think you given up on fleecing us poor humble merchants,” Mama-san said walking over to give him a hug. “I’m sorry Mama-san,” Iruka replied genuinely. “It wasn’t intentional. It just the rich ladies pay better and I know what’s it’s like to be hungry so I-”Mama-san swatted him affectionately on his hand, “There’s no need to explain.”The shop owner absently fingered her necklace, “I understand that sometimes economics gets in the way of feelings. Enough sad memories, tell me, who is this gorgeous thing?”Iruka blushed and slipped his hand into Kakashi’s. Rui smiled proudly, “This handsome fellow is my boyfriend Shishi. Shishi I would like you to meet Mama-san. She is the owner of this establishment and the local postmaster.”“Your boyfriend?” Mama-san exclaimed her beady eyes widening. “No wonder you had to leave town.”To Iruka’s surprise she reached out and pulled both of them into a strong embrace and said something he recognized as a prayer for protection over them before squealing, “I’m so happy for the two of you. It isn’t often that love prevails.” “Come along, have a seat where I can look at the two of you. Oh, to see young lovers together again!” She ushered them to the bar and screamed to the waitress, “Bring two large bowls and a pot of tea! Seeing the two of you has made me so happy! It gives me hope that one day I too will have happy ending.”
Kakashi had often passed by the bar, but this was his first time coming in. He was surprised by the affectionate greeting the owner gave Iruka and the free meal they both received - the true love reconciliation special. The place held a mixture of locals and ninja but the patrons were mostly ninjas.
He tried to ignore the eyes on him by focusing on the warm press of Iruka’s thigh against his and the frequent bumping of elbows and brushes of hands. The chuunin was an infiltration genius; when in the company of others he mainly used his left hand so each movement placed them in contact with each other. He had just put a spoonful of the delicious donburi in his mouth when she asked him, “So Shishi, just how did you tame the Kyuubi no Youko?”The spoon Kakashi was lowering froze in mid-air and his mouth stopped working. The woman had just called Iruka the Nine-Tailed fox. He was surrounded by enemy shinobi and the woman had just brought up the Nine-Tail fox in reference to Iruka. Instead of Naruto or his sensei’s death Kakashi’s mind filled with images of Kushina. She’d often put him in a headlock and give him a noogie or hop in his lap and blow raspberries against his cheek. When he was ill she’d tie him up or pin him in some ridiculous wrestling hold to force medicine down his throat. She’d also sit at his bedside and wipe his brow when had fevers and comfort him after his nightmares by following him to the rooftop and sitting silently at his side. If he did something stupid she’d make sure he knew exactly what he did wrong in an extremely high volume then give him a solid whack on the head or bottom. If someone did something to wrong him she made sure they deeply regretted it. She was loud, loving, annoying, and protective. She told him at least twice a day when he grew up he was going to fall in love with someone just like her. She was partially correct. In many ways, Iruka was Kushina raised to the third power.Kakashi began making rodent like whimpers then chunky bits of beef and vegetables spewed from his nose. Tears ran down his face, he slapped the counter top and started trembling. He could feel the Snow and Cloud ninja moving closer but he was powerless to stop his reaction.“Shishi? Shishi are you okay?” his ever present guardian asked.Kakashi could feel Iruka vigorously patting and rubbing his back. Kakashi took a deep breath then burst into a series of animalistic barks and grunts. Iruka grabbed his shoulders and swiveled the stool he was sitting on. Kakashi took one look at the concern on Iruka’s face and managed to utter a small amount of human speech, “Oh gods…dead….we’d all be dead...that temper….destroy everything.”At that moment Iruka’s concern turned to anger. Hatake Kakashi, the bastard, was laughing. Iruka knocked away the hand slapping his shoulder.Kakashi had descended into mad giggles and was now kicking the counter, “Ru…you’d kill us all. No priest or Kage could save us….then…then you’d cry because we were all gone.”“I hate you asshole,” Iruka growled pushing Kakashi off of him and letting him flop onto the bar stool as he slid two seats over. This encouraged Kakashi further, “See…that’s what I’m talking about,” Kakashi guffawed pointing at Iruka while clutching his partially healed ribs. “You were …worried…now you…want to kill me.”Most of the room’s occupants were now laughing at the hysterical man and his blushing lover. Rui who had always seemed calm and even tempered had gone from calm to concerned to angry in a matter of seconds. They relaxed and returned to their positions; this man was clearly not Hatake Kakashi. During his time in their care, the Copy Nin had shown them many reactions to Kyuubi and the attack in which he lost his mentor. Not a single one of them was laughter. The trip to Mama-san’s turned out to be just what was needed to ease the tensions between the Konoha shinobi. Kakashi giggled intermittently as they finished their meal and Iruka alternated between glaring and pouting, “It’s not that funny.”
Each vehement declaration sent Kakashi into another round of giggles. His mirth was so genuine that the entire restaurant soon began to laugh with him. “You’re incorrigible, you know that,” Iruka said shaking his head in disappointment and walking out of the restaurant.“Rui, wait!” Kakashi yelled getting his feet tangled in the barstools when he attempted to chase after him. He was halfway to the front door when Iruka barged back in and howled. He’d tied nine of the medium length fishing rods to his waist to mimic tails. They clattered and clanged as he pounced on Kakashi. The entire restaurant cheered when he hoisted him over his shoulder and announced he was taking his mate back to his lair.Kakashi grabbed the fishing knife Iruka had strapped to his leg and screamed, “I’m killing anyone that attempts to rescue me!”“Don’t worry hapless victim. We’ve subdued your potential rescuer,” one of the kunoichi whom they often heard overhead complaining about her thoughtless boyfriend yelled as she tied Manzo to the chair he was sitting in.“Yeah and a little fox magic just to be sure you get away uninterrupted,” another said while she and two of their friendlier comrades placed a hand on the two of them and began making seals.Kakashi and Iruka both screamed as they were teleported back to their cabin. Their sled arrived seconds later. They waved as their magicians called out “Night guys!” and “Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do, on second thought you don’t have to worry about pregnancy, go for it!”They were still in a good mood as they unpacked the sled but the awkwardness returned when Iruka’s eyes feel on the enema kit. Kakashi had tossed it on the bed when he began gathering items to go look for Iruka.“Doesn’t do much good in here does it?” Kakashi joked weakly before picking it up carrying it to the bathroom. He caught a glimpse of himself as he placed it beneath the sink. The eyelid surrounding the Sharingan was still swollen but had healed enough for him to see and feel Obito glaring at him. He turned away quickly then walked to the tack room and took a deep breath of the unheated room’s cold air before going to the front to face Iruka.“Did you want to take the first bath?” Iruka asked quietly.“No, go ahead,” Kakashi replied.Iruka nodded and picked up his things; the bathroom door clicked quietly behind him.MisatosPenPen: Thank you. I’m glad you liked the dream and how Iruka’s sleep sexing affected Kakashi.
KC: I don’t take it as criticism. I know what it’s like to get hooked on a story and want to know what happens next. Don’t give up on your inner muse. I started out reading, then writing, then I got the nerve to post something. The rest is history. Iruka and Shisui are my head canon. There will be a happy ending, but I’m struggling on how to get it there.
Silistina: Thank you! I’m always floored when people say they’re hooked on my fics. I’m happy my writing brings you such joy.
Chris: Thank you so much. I’m always glad to hear from new readers. I hope you continue to enjoy it.
Wickedsinn: Will this work?
