Chapter 38
"Say hello to Deidara-kun and my two grandsons from me," Father said as they reached their cars.
Being parked so closely to the restaurant, their cars were bathing in the soft white light pooling through the large windows of the building. Shadows danced across the hoods of the cars as people inside the restaurant moved around.
"I will," Itachi smiled, unlocking his car. "Tell mother I'll see her soon."
"She'll be more delighted if you bring Akihito-kun and Shion-kun with you," the older man chuckled and nodded at his oldest son before stepping into his car and driving off.
Itachi sat down behind the wheel of his own car, but didn't start the motor immediately. Instead he fished out his phone and dialled Deidara's number, rapping his fingers on the steering wheel as he waited for his mate to pick up.
"You left the restaurant, un?" Deidara asked in lieu of a greeting. There was no other sound bar his breathing and the muted noise of the television in the background, so both Akihito and Shion must be sleeping.
"Yes, father just left."
There was a pause in which it was obvious that Deidara was trying to come up with the right way to ask his question. "And Sasuke-kun?"
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Itachi answered annoyed, "He didn't even show up."
Normally he wouldn't be too bothered by his brother's absence during a family dinner. Ever since his falling out with father about his preferred choice of study and job, Sasuke and Fugaku acted rather carefully around each other and as a result, Sasuke tended to avoid too many meetings with the family. Well that, and his younger brother had never been that socially inclined, so him skipping a family dinner wasn't that odd.
But this family dinner was one he knew he was not allowed to miss. It was the one dinner in the year when the two sons joined their father for dinner and set aside any differences to just talk with each other. It sounded ridiculous, but mother had been the one to come up with it as a way to keep the family together when the tension between father and Sasuke had been running dangerously high.
Despite their issues and Sasuke's scepticism about the whole idea, the younger Alpha had never missed their dinner since mother had proposed the idea.
Until tonight that was.
"Did he at least call to let you know why he wasn't coming?"
"No, no phone call, no e-mail, no text, nothing," Itachi replied irritated, glaring at the orange tabby cat sneaking past the bushes. It looked up and met his eyes when it walked past his car. The cat bared its little fangs before jumping into the bushes and disappearing from sight.
"Well, he could have forgotten the dinner was tonight, un," Deidara cautiously suggested.
"How on earth would he forget this dinner? He knows it's one he's not allowed to miss," Itachi retorted, rubbing over his forehead.
Father hadn't mentioned Sasuke's absence even once throughout the entire dinner, but Itachi had recognised the displeased glint in his eyes. Fugaku might not see eye to eye on everything with his youngest son, but he still cared enough to attend this special dinner each year. That Sasuke hadn't been present at all tonight nor had warned them he wouldn't he be attending hadn't made father happy.
Hell, Itachi hadn't been happy either.
Deidara clucked his tongue. "True, but the previous times he didn't have someone who could distract him," he pointed out amused.
It took a couple of seconds before Itachi got the allusion and he furrowed his eyebrows. "The heat's been over for more than a week now," he reminded the Omega. "I know he and Naruto-kun were – too busy for a while," he said delicately, wrinkling his nose, because no matter how old they would get, he didn't want to think of his little brother having sex, "but they should have been finished by now."
"Should have, yes," Deidara agreed easily. "But sex isn't the only way they could have become distracted. They're getting to know each other and if what Sasuke-kun says is true, then it wouldn't surprise me if they got too caught up in each other for your brother to remember he had to attend a dinner with you and your father, un."
"Perhaps you're right," Itachi muttered and pursed his lips. "I'm going to have a talk with him about it, though. Mother isn't going to be pleased once she finds out Sasuke wasn't here tonight."
"I'm pretty sure she'll be way too happy about the fact that Sasuke-kun's finally found someone again to be angry about him not showing up, un," Deidara chuckled. "Anyway, it's late, so your scolding will have to wait for another day. Get your arse back here, mister."
"Someone's in a demanding mood," Itachi spoke amused, but he turned the key to start the car.
"I got both Akihito and Shion asleep and I want to make use of it before Shion wakes up, so get here now," Deidara demanded and hung up before the Alpha could say something.
He stared at his phone for a moment, watching the screen darken, before he shook his head and slipped his phone back into his pocket.
A smirk unfurled across his lips as he drove backwards for a bit before turning his car into the direction of the exit.
How could he say no to a demand like that from his mate?
He woke up the next morning with his nose pressed into long, golden blond hair and he pulled back a bit to avoid having his nose tickled by the strands. Deidara was still fast asleep, curled up with his back towards the dark haired man. They were naked and rather sticky, but pleasantly warm and Itachi slipped his arm around the younger man's waist, drawing him closer until he was pressed with his back against the Alpha's chest. He entwined their legs and Deidara shifted slightly, muttering something incomprehensible, but didn't wake up.
There was some sunlight creeping through the small gap in the curtains, casting a thin beam across the floor and up to the opposite wall. Itachi stared at it for a moment and then wondered just how late it exactly was.
He turned his head and managed to get a glimpse of the clock on his nightstand. He could only stare at it bemused as both hands of the clock showed that it was half past six in the morning. That on its own wasn't so unusual; it was Friday and a work day on top of that, so he always woke up around this hour.
What was remarkable, however, and had astonishment replacing bemusement, was the fact that Shion had slept through the night for the first time.
Despite their activities of last night, which had had them falling asleep exhausted but satisfied, one of them would have woken up if Shion had started crying. Their instincts wouldn't have allowed them to ignore their youngest son.
That they hadn't woken up even once could only mean that Shion hadn't woken up either.
He was pulled back from his thoughts when Deidara stirred slightly, wriggling even closer against Itachi's chest than before – a feat the Alpha honestly hadn't thought was possible. Not that he was complaining. He tightened his grip around Deidara's waist and waited for the Omega to wake up properly.
"Time is it?" Deidara mumbled, barely audible because half his face was still mushed into his pillow.
"Around half past six."
"Hm." It was quiet for a moment as Deidara wrapped his arm around Itachi's, keeping it trapped against his stomach. His index finger traced meaningless shapes across the back of Itachi's hand when the blond man stilled.
Itachi smiled.
"Wait, half past six?" Deidara repeated belatedly, astonished and his eyes were wide when he whipped his head around to stare at Itachi, smacking the older man with his hair. "Did Shion wake you up then? Because I can't remember waking up last night, un."
Pushing the long strands away from his face, Itachi answered calmly, hiding his amusement, "No, he didn't wake me up."
"Did he cry at all, un?" Deidara demanded, sitting up abruptly.
Silently mourning the loss of his mate's body in his arms, Itachi sat up too and smirked. "If he'd cried, we would have heard him, don't you think so?"
"That's true, but wait …" A calculating look crossed Deidara's face as he visibly put two and two together. "He slept through the night, un?!" he gasped amazed, smacking Itachi's arm in excitement.
"He did, yes," Itachi confirmed and smiled at the way sky blue eyes glittered with excitement.
"This is amazing! I can't believe he's already sleeping through the night!"
"This was just the first time," Itachi warned him, not wanting Deidara to get overly excited. One night of uninterrupted sleep didn't mean Shion would continue to sleep through every night from now on. It would be great and definitely appreciated if he did, but Itachi didn't dare to hope for that yet.
"I know." Deidara waved away his concern, before sinking back down in the bed. "But still, this is a great start, un!"
"It is," Itachi agreed and figuring he still had a bit of time left before he had to get up, he lay down again, turning on his side and caressing Deidara's stomach softly. "We might be able to sleep more hours from now on," he murmured, pressing soft kisses in Deidara's neck.
"That does sound amazing," Deidara hummed, tilting his head slightly so Itachi could reach his neck easier.
The corners of his mouth tugging up in a smirk was all the warning Itachi got before he was suddenly pushed down flat on his back and Deidara settled on top of him, straddling his hips. His hands slipped upwards over Itachi's arms, caressing them lightly, going up, up, until he ran them over the Alpha's shoulders and settled them on the mattress.
"Seeing as we still have some time left," Deidara whispered, leaning forwards until his lips hovered right above Itachi's and his hips rolled enticingly against Itachi's, "why don't we have a little bit of - "
He was cut off abruptly by the loud, sharp wailing rebounding through the corridor and coming out distorted through the baby monitor. Both men froze for a moment, staring at each other with wide eyes, before Deidara closed his and groaned loudly, letting himself drop down on the bed again.
"Guess a full night of sleep is all he's willing to give us, un," he muttered, rubbing his hands over his face; clearly frustrated at the interruption.
Itachi couldn't really blame him. He took a couple of deep breaths to force himself to calm down and sat up, swinging his legs off the bed. Shion's wailing was reaching that particular pitch that warned him the crying fest was about to become a whole lot uglier if his papa didn't show up this instant!
"Rain check?" Itachi suggested wryly, standing up and stuffing his feet into his slippers.
"I'll hold you to that, un," Deidara mumbled, dropping his hands down on the bed with a loud 'thump'.
"I'll go get him. You prepare his bottle, I'll change his diaper," Itachi said and grimaced, despite having assigned the task to himself. He loved both his sons dearly, but changing diapers would never become his favourite activity when it came to taking care of his children.
"You're the best, un! I love you!"
The way blue eyes lit up was enough to make up for the upcoming smelly task, though.
"I might be a bit later at the office today," Itachi said, navigating his car through the heavy flow of traffic. It was a bit past eight and rush hour was still going strong. He only had a couple of more streets left before he could leave the rush behind and enter the quiet neighbourhood that was his destination for now.
"All right, you need me to reschedule your appointment of nine o'clock?" Rin inquired and in the background he could hear her typing something on her computer.
He gave it some thought and glanced at the digital clock. "Yes, reschedule it to an hour later if that's possible," he replied. "I don't think I'll be at the office before nine o'clock."
"No problem, sir. I'll reschedule your appointment. Anything else?"
"No, that's all. Thank you, Rin. I'll see you over an hour."
A couple of minutes later, he found a good place to park his car and he stepped out, narrowing his eyes slightly when he spotted Naruto's car in the driveway. So he was still here then, hm?
The blinds were still lowered, but his brother should be up by now. If he wasn't, well … Being woken up by the doorbell would serve him right for ditching his brother and father during the one night he wasn't allowed to be absent without a very good reason. He better had a good reason; if Itachi had had to give up his evening with his husband for this dinner, Sasuke could have gone one evening with Naruto.
He was happy that his brother had finally found someone again after all these years, truly he was, but that didn't mean he could skip meetings without even a heads up.
He pressed down on the doorbell, but furrowed his eyebrows when he didn't hear any sound inside. He pressed down again, but there was still no familiar ringing of the doorbell echoing inside. Sasuke must have disabled it for some reason.
Releasing an aggravated sigh, he fished out his keys from his pocket and selected the one of Sasuke's house. As he went to stick the key in the lock, he hesitated for a moment; his mind flashing back to the last time he had used his personal key to get inside. That had been back when Naruto had still been together with Gaara and Itachi had been worried about how fixated Sasuke had become on the Omega.
He had been right to worry, because when he and Deidara had come to pick up Sasuke, they had caught him and Naruto together, groping and kissing each other like their lives had depended on it. It wasn't an image he would forget any time soon; a pity that, because he didn't exactly want to remember how his little brother looked like when he was messing around with someone.
Pursing his lips, he shook his head and unlocked the door. Their heat was over, so the chances of him catching his brother with Naruto were slim. He just hoped Sasuke could tear his attention away from the blond long enough to actually listen to what Itachi had to say.
God, had he been that bad when he first started to sleep with Deidara? He liked to think he hadn't.
When he stepped inside the hallway, he wrinkled his nose and covered it when he was instantly assaulted by the heady scent of sex and pheromones – both Alpha and Omega twisted together so much, it was difficult to separate the two from each other– that clung to the air. How bad had their heats been for the air to still carry such a heavy scent?
Trying to ignore the smell as much as he could – he didn't need to know this much about his brother -, he started searching the ground floor for the younger Alpha. The living room was dark, showing that nobody was inside, but light was pooling out of the open kitchen door. He stuck his head inside, but aside from the faint scent of bacon and eggs and evidence of their breakfast still left on the table, the room showed no sign of either Sasuke or Naruto.
Retreating back into the hallway, he stared at the staircase. "Sasuke?" he called out, but only silence greeted him.
He frowned; Sasuke's bag, shoes and jacket were still present, so he hadn't left for his work yet. He had to be somewhere in the house, but where? Well, he wasn't downstairs, so Itachi would have to look upstairs then.
Slowly he ascended the staircase and pricked his ears when he caught a faint 'thump' noise. It came from somewhere on the first floor; hopefully it wasn't the bedroom.
"Sasuke?" Still no reply. What the hell was his brother doing that he couldn't even hear him calling out for him?
The smell of them together was even headier up here; no wonder, considering this floor held Sasuke's bedroom. The door to it stood ajar and Itachi couldn't help but let out a small sigh of relief when he only encountered an unmade bed. Sure, he wanted to find his brother soon, but he'd rather not do so in the man's bedroom.
The bathroom was empty too; the guest room didn't even look like someone had stepped foot inside for a while now. That only left Sasuke's home office on this floor and he couldn't help but feel a bit apprehensive when he approached the door to that room. He hadn't seen any sight of Naruto yet nor heard him – and the blond was hard to ignore – so did that mean he was in Sasuke's study as well? What could they possibly be doing there that they didn't hear him calling out?
The door wasn't closed completely and he pushed against it, despite a voice in the back of his head telling him that doing so might not be such a good idea. It couldn't be any worse than what he saw a couple of weeks ago.
He stood corrected. It was actually much worse.
He could only stand there frozen like a statue as his eyes took in what was happening in the room. It instantly became obvious why neither man had heard him call out for Sasuke; they were both too wrapped up in each other to pay any mind to what was happening around them.
Literally too wrapped up as Sasuke sat in his chair with Naruto straddling him; his arms clasped around his neck. The Omega was only wearing a white shirt, one which was dangling off his shoulders, revealing a plethora of dark bruises dotting his neck. The shirt was just long enough to cover his back, but the way Sasuke held him around his waist caused the cloth to bunch up, showing the way the muscles in his arse tensed and clenched as he rocked back and forth urgently. Pale hands slid down, digging slender fingers in the supple flesh and the blond man moaned; the sound so filthy and guttural it made Itachi redden.
"Al-almost there," Naruto whimpered and fuck, that was not a sound Itachi had ever wanted to hear from the Omega.
He needed to leave right the fuck now.
Before he could turn around, though, Sasuke looked up and his eyes flashed. Itachi stiffened, watching the reddish hue overtaking glinting black as his brother leant forwards slightly. Despite the Omega in his lap, the vulnerable position he currently was in, he still managed to look threatening as he revealed his teeth; his eyes piercing into Itachi's. One of his hands reached up and he pressed down on a particular spot between Naruto's neck and shoulder, eliciting a shuddering moan from the blond.
"Mine," Sasuke hissed; his voice so dark, his eyes glittering so maniacally, that there was no doubt in Itachi's mind that Sasuke would attack him if he dared to even step one foot closer to the pair.
Despite the heat being over, Sasuke was clearly still heavily influenced by his Alpha side and his Alpha side considered Itachi to be only one thing now: a threat. A threat to the frantically moving Omega in his lap, one who was oblivious to the tension between the two Alpha as he kissed Sasuke's neck, begging the dark haired man for harder, more, deeper, please!
Itachi turned around and fled, hightailing it out of the house so quickly as if he wanted to escape from a demon. Sasuke might be his brother, but that moment he had considered Itachi as nothing more than an enemy, someone who might take away his mate.
There was no reasoning with an Alpha who thought he needed to protect his mate from a rival.
Itachi would come back later, much later, he decided as he slipped behind the wheel and slammed the door shut. Perhaps it would even be better if he just called Sasuke later today.
It might also be a splendid idea to just never use his personal key ever again.
And he needed a drink. Badly. It didn't matter that it wasn't even nine o'clock yet. He needed something to scrub his brain of what he had just witnessed.
The conversation about Sasuke skipping the dinner could wait for a little while longer.
AN2: It is possible Itachi refuses to ever use his key again after this LOL
