Over the next few weeks, the story of Sakura Hinata and Kabuto spread like wild fire. The pending trail of the hero and traitor was dissolved entirely and suspicions of Gaara's intentions were extinguished due to a detailed report given by Anbu members, Sai and Neji. Privately, the Hokage gave a formal apology to the last of the Uzumaki and Uchiha, offering back their headbands as a way of saying that they were once again part of the Hidden Leaf. With a sincere bow, both Naruto and Sasuke gently declined. They had built their home from the ground up in the under the desert sun and moon, and planned to remain there to raise their family.
Both Neji and Sai were quietly honored by their investigation, being able to uncover the plot which most did not believe. They were put in charge of any further moves against Kabuto and Sakura . In the next few months, Hinata and Shikimaru had their first child. A healthy girl with her mother's eyes and fluffy black hair. She was a bubbly, social creature with the light tan of her father's completion. Much to Neji's surprise, he was rather fond of his newborn cousin. On his off-days, he and Sai often babysat together when Hinata needed alone time to plan the wedding. The baby girl was named Botan, after the large peony flower.
Shiro managed to survive the poison that he was injected with in order to shield Gaara. Thanks to Sasuke's help, his protective tattoo guardian grew drastically. Once the size of a pet, was now a python which wrapped it's way around Shiro's tall body. Gaara found it extremely sexy. No longer needing to cover his face and hair, Shiro continued to remain at the Kazekage's side. It was such a sight to see Gaara always being followed by a tall, beautiful man with long white hair and placid smile. Shiro always stayed at least 3 steps behind, as any good pet should, unless summoned to be closer. Officially, he was given the title as Gaara's personal guard and concubine. There were stamped documents to prove it.
Back on the ranch, Naruto and Sasuke returned to their quiet life and halcyon days as if nothing had changed. Well, that's not exactly true. There were two new additions to their family now. Gaara pushed the formal adoption papers, as for no one to question the rightful place of Shino and Kana. All that was left was a matter of their last names. It was a quiet day when Naruto stood at the mailbox in front of his house. Sasuke and the kids were inside, finishing up a lunch of soup and sandwiches on the warm weekend afternoon. A large sealed envelope had arrived by post, and Naruto needed to stamp for it. Coming back into the house wearing just a pair of tan shorts and white flip flop sandals, the blond headed to the kitchen.
"Hey, Sasuke. The adoption papers are in. What do you want me to do with them?" Sasuke was busy cleaning off the table as the kids went to go play outside on their newly built swing and slide set. Standing in a loose white t-shirt and oversized black shorts that belonged to Naruto, he continued to clean. Taking the dishes to the sink, he dropped them in and turned the faucet on. "Well, open them first. Make sure they are right." Shrugging, Naruto pulled up a chair at the table. Tearing off the seal, the parchment papers were pulled out as to read off the names. "Let's see...Kana Uzumaki, Shino Uzumaki,...and Sasuke Uzumaki?" Smiling, Sasuke cut off the water and moved to snatch the papers.
"Hm. Sounds right to me." He gave them a quick look over before handing them back. "Put them in the filing cabinet in my office." Looking over, Naruto gave a bit of a stare.
"Sasuke Uzumaki?"
Turning, the new Uzumaki only smiled. "Yes?" The papers went to sit on the table as Naruto stood up. Leaning in, the striped face closed in on the smiling one.
"Since when?" Laughing, Sasuke covered his mouth coyly. He had been keeping this quiet for quite some time. The large shirt hung a bit over a shoulder, exposing the cursed seal.
"Since I went to file the paper work last week. It makes it less complicated than it already is on Parent-Teacher day. Oh, but there is something I want you to sign first..." Turning, Sasuke headed to his office. Following, the blond scratched the top of his head, sort of waiting to see what else Sasuke did when he wasn't looking.
Digging into a bottom drawer, Sasuke pulled out another parchment paper. "I need you to sign this." Handing it over, Naruto looked it over.
"License for...Marriage?" His face lit up like a firework. "I...um..." Sasuke went back to his desk, grabbing a pen.
"What?" Coughing a bit, Naruto stammered.
"Wait...Wait here..." Blinking, Sasuke waited, though did feel sort of dejected. Naruto had run to the bedroom, scrambling around before coming back into the office. Panting as if he had run a marathon, in a tightly gripped hand was a clone of the marriage license. However, this one was older and much more winkled. Taking a step closer, Sasuke read Naruto's already signed name and the date.
"That was...when we just got back a few months ago...you had this ever since?" Nodding, Naruto smiled.
"Yeah. But I didn't want to give it to you until..." The blond was stopped as Sasuke quickly snatched the paper from his hand. After quickly signing it on his desk, it was held up to be given back at arm's length. The long black bangs from the hanging face were covering most of the hot blush on the pale face. Laughing, Naruto took it from the extended hand and slipped a Hanayama puzzle ring made of silver and black steel. The ring was made of several unique parts that combined into an intertwining braid when put together. Feeling the coldness of the metal, Sasuke looked to see what was chilling the ring finger.
"I was waiting to find the right way to ask...and looking for rings. I think this one suits us better...a way to say, it's complicated." Looking to his own hand, Naruto was about to slip the matching band to his own hand when Sasuke spoke up. "Wait...I want to do that." Blond eyebrows raised as Sasuke stepped forward. Taking the ring , he slipped it onto the ring finger of his lover. It was opposite shades of his own, the silver and black braiding in reverse. Continuing to hold the hand, Sasuke looked to Naruto with a satisfied smile. Smiling back, the blond leaned in for the stealing of a soft kiss. Slowly between the caressing of each other's lips, a free hand came up to gently pet Sasuke's cheek. It carefully wiped away the single leaked tear.
"What are you crying for?" Sniffling, Sasuke looked away.
"It's just that...your family name is really weird to write out." Letting out a laugh, Naruto rubbed his nose tip against Sasuke's face.
"You'll have a lot of practice. Don't worry about it, ya know?" Smirking, Sasuke put his arms around Naruto's neck, sharing another kiss as a formally unionized couple. While they had no real way of knowing what was in store for them in the future, they planned on living their lives in the here and now. The past was behind them and their future was a infinite, but at least they had each other and promises that needed to be kept.
*Author Notes: This ends the second story of the Desert Series. The third installment is already being written out and will likely be posted in the AU part of Naruto's Fanfiction, due to the span of time and introduction of Original Characters. Lots of things to look forward too involving Sakura and Kabuto's plans, kids getting older, more in depth with Sasuke and Naruto sharing the burden of Kyuubi, and the blossoming of the other pairings. Other things are in store, but I'm not going to spoil it for you :) Thank you for the support and patience. I hope you've enjoyed everything so far.
