Epilogue
A/N: FINALLY! After three months, 153 Word pages, and 54,363 words, it IS DONE! AHAHAHAHAH! I have never imagined that I was actually capable of being interested enough in a plot to write it for so long, but I apparently am capable! WEE!
Also, I want to thank all who reviewed this story! I loved reading your reviews and they spurred me to write more! So thank you!
EPILOGUE:
Despite the pain his leg, and Nagato’s soreness, they were moving with a surprising speed through the forest, putting more and more distance between themselves and Konoha. The fact that Gaara had found the key to Nagato’s chakra-suppressing collar helped a lot.
The night was dark, thick clouds obscuring the still full moon and he had to navigate by instinct and rusted skills to get them out.
When they had left the village, his only thought was to go as far away from it as possible, to forget that he had ever became part of all the events for the past ten years. He had no plan, no ideas about where he and Nagato would go, once the immediate danger had passed. Now that Konoha was further and further away, his keen mind began to work feverishly.
They would need to avoid the hunter nins that Naruto would surely dispatch after them, then move from place to place to hide and lay low for a while. Afterwards, he would contact Sasuke and ask him for sanctuary. Beg him for sanctuary if he had to. He hoped against all hope that his other surviving student would be willing to accept them in his home and provide protection to the both of them. He would do whatever Sasuke wanted in return, convinced that it would never be worse than what they had escaped from.
The forest was lit up momentarily by the bright flash of a lightning, the thrunder booming all around them only a few seconds later. Then there was another, and another, and then the sky opened and the downpour began, soaking them and everything around them to the bone. It would make moving more difficult, but at the same time, it would erase whatever trail they had left after them.
Even as drenched as they were, Nagato’s hand in his was warm, holding firmly onto his, the red-head having complete trust in him not to let him fall or splatter against a tree trunk as Kakashi led him forward. He followed him blindly, both in the figurative and literal meaning of the word, not caring where they went, as long as they stayed together.
********************************************
The storm had already passed and it was a bright, golden dawn outside when Naruto finally began to wake up on the blood-soaked floor, consciousness slowly returning to him. He felt as weak as a newborn, unable to move at all, the soreness in his throat not allowing him to speak.
There was a gentle, careful hand petting his blonde hair and he had to blink several times and squint until the blurry shape above him came into focus. It was Gaara.
“Shhh, don’t try to talk now.” The red-head said softly. “And don’t move. I will help you, Naruto. Just like you helped me once. I will show you the right path. It will be okay.”
