Chapter 35: Delusions of Grandeur
They all turned in unison. Nar regarded the pretty black haired man with curiosity, as the other man returned the look in kind. Nara sighed. He hadn't anticipated this, but would have if he'd spent more time at the shop. "Hello Haku." He tried not to sound too unfriendly or too friendly either.
The little raven laughed at him and they both knew he'd caught the point. Then he completely disregarded it. "Aren't you going to introduce me to your friends Nara-kun?"
Neji raised a disapproving eyebrow at the impertinent man. Haku just smiled back at him. It was a dazzling smile, a smile that had destroyed lesser men. Nar cocked his head to the side and looked at Nara inquisitively. "Everybody, this is Haku. He's the new piercest at the shop." He waved at the little group with him. "This is everybody." If his intentionally rude vagueness didn't get through to the little psycho, nothing would.
Haku smiled brightly. "Well, it's nice to meet 'everybody'. I have a table over there. 'Everybody' should join me." It wasn't a request. It was a challenge. A string of curse words stampeded through Nara's head.
Nar caught the look on his lover's face and struggled not to laugh. If Nara could have choked this newcomer, he would have. "I'm Nar." The blond piped into the growing silence since Haku's 'offer'.
Haku regarded him closely. "Nar, has anyone ever told you that your eyes are a deep and blue as the ocean at dusk?" Haku asked in an almost worshipful tone.
"Um, No...." Nar rubbed the back of his neck, embarrassed by the man's straightforward compliment. Neji and Nara bristled just the way jealous lovers should. 'Wasn't what I intended, but amusing just the same.' Haku thought to himself with a smile as he took this adorable boy, Nar's hand and led him and by that the others to the table reserved for him to the side of the stage at the edge of what could be called a dance floor.
The band was finishing up their first set. They thanked the crowd before taking a break. The lead singer was a slim pale bare chested man with long almost white blond hair, with piercings in his nipples, belly button, and one eyebrow.
He approached the table with what was supposed to be an imposing glare. Haku ignored him completely. "So, what brings the less than goth to the 'we wish we were goth' hangout?" He asked while scooting his chair closer to Nar's. The temperature in the room dropped noticeably. The icy glares Neji and Nara shot his way were also ignored.
"We just wanted to dress up and hang out. That's okay isn't it?" Nar gave him one of his most winning smiles and Haku actually squealed in delight.
"You are just a complete doll aren't you?!" He glomped on to Nar and hugged him tightly.
If glares were daggers, Haku would have looked like a piece of swiss cheese. Kiba was only half watching the show. He kept the band's vocalist in the corner of his eye as the man's expression darkened.
"Haku-sama," he greeted the pretty young man sweetly. "I'm very pleased you came tonight." The pale blond ignored the fact that his precious Haku was currently hanging all over a very cute and smiling Nar.
Haku frowned a little, but his back was to the singer, so the man didn't see the exasperated look. 'You begged me to come like a pathetic sycophant...' Haku pushed hair as fine as ebony spider-silk from his face and forced something of a smile before turning to see the almost pleading look in Kimmi's pale green eyes. It made his stomach turn. "My friends have arrived now. How long until your next set?"
"Friends?" Kimmi tried to hide his displeasure, but only a bit.
"Yes, this is Nara. He manages the shop I'm working at right now. This is Nar," Haku pinched the blond's cheek making him blush cutely. "Isn't he adorable?" Haku didn't know the names the other two went by, but covered nicely. "Nar and I are going for drinks, be right back." He grabbed the cute blond by the arm and drug him to the bar.
Kimmi glared at first Neji then Kiba. The latter grinned, cockily showing his fang like teeth. "What's your name?"
"I am Kimmimaro. Who are you?"
Neji's eyebrow arched at the other man's rude behavior. Nara was ignoring the man as he tried to keep Haku and Nar in sight. Kiba leaned forward bracing his arms on the table. "What do you care?" If this guy wanted a fight, Kiba had no problem granting his request.
Nara may have been ignoring the upstart, but he always kept an eye on his friends, including the hot-headed one. He put his hand on Kiba's thigh, asking him to ease up. Kiba got the message and disregarded it. He leaned back in his chair and threw his arm over the back nonchalantly and turned to Neji. "Wonder what's taken' the cuties so long, eh?"
Kiba swore the man's hair was going to catch on fire he was so pissed off. "Your names." He hissed. It wasn't a question, it was a demand.
Nara pinched Kiba's leg hard. He flinched slightly as he removed his friends newly formed talon from his flesh. He was surprised at the absence of blood. Neji rose to the challenge as his lovers were distracted. "My name is Neji."
"Kiba is the one spoiling for a fight and let me tell you, you really don't want to go there, blood sports are his family’s favorite past time." Nara grumbled as he tried to extricate his hand from Kiba's. There was no way Kiba was letting the weapon loose to injure him again.
"Who are you to Haku?"
"What're you? His father?" Kiba barked out a laugh. He leered at the goth. "You gonna ask my intentions next?" He winked a dark brown eye suggestively.
Nara's head landed in his palm. "Asshole." he mumbled under his breath.
Neji didn't react at all. Of course Kiba would respond this way. This Kimmimaro was like a chihuahua taunting a wolf. He would intervene only if necessary. The man's rude behavior had Neji's back up almost as much as Kiba.
Nar came bouncing back with drinks in both hands. Haku followed with a dumbfounded look on his face. He moved around Kimmi who held his chair for him. He didn't notice an action that normally would have made him angry and defensive. He just sat down and stared at the other three men. "Is he for real?" he breathed out in awe.
Nar was reaching around Nara's shoulder as he set a drink down in front him. Nara reached one tattooed arm up to pull the blond into his lap. "Ah what the... Jeez Nara!" Nar giggled, but didn't resist. He wrapped his arms around Nara's shoulders and snuggled his head into his lover's shoulder. Nara's hair tickled his cheek.
Neji didn't even realize he was smiling. It was a gentle and loving smile, disarming in a way neither Haku nor Kimmi could put into words. Somehow, without knowing how, they just knew it was a precious and rare sight.
Haku had been shocked by how sweet and bubbly Nar was. He had met a lot of people in his travels, but never before had he met someone who just captured his heart in a few moments like the blond had. Now he was just captivated. The gentle way Nara's art covered arms cradled the cute blond showed a tenderness he wouldn't have guessed the grumpy young man possessed. The warm fuzzy feeling wafting from the three of them was almost laughable. Haku giggled at how ridiculous three men in love could be.
Kiba kicked him under the table. The cute little dark headed man scowled at him and rubbed his shin. "Voyeur." was whispered across the table.
Haku stuck his tongue out at the man. 'How very Nar of you... I'm thinking if you two get to be friends, we might never keep you out of trouble...' All Kiba did was smile back at the brat. He knew how to handle brats like this.
Kimmimaro wasn't sure what to think of these people. He just didn't want them near Haku. He didn't want anyone near Haku.
Haku could see the barely contained mischief in the wild haired brunette's dark eyes. Haku gave him a playful wink and a sweet smile. Kiba smirked. 'I know your kind, don't even think about it.' He wasn't attracted to Nar and so far this little mini troublemaker wasn't pulling any strings either.
Kimmi completely misunderstood the situation. He stood there, shaking with impotent rage, seething in silence. Kiba caught the tension in the air and glanced up just in time to see two men stalking up to the table. There was a wicked air around the two of them. They were obviously twins.
Both had died his hair silver, the bangs covered the right eye of one and the left of the other, but was otherwise styled exactly the same. Their skin had a pallor to it that made them look half dead. Kiba was sure it was intentional. They were wearing turquoise lipstick and dark brown eyeliner. They were dressed exactly alike, save for a string of beads around the neck of the one on Kimmi's right.
Kiba watched them move like a pair or panthers stalking up upon their prey. They moved as one to strike at the pale man. He dodged in one movement and they barely avoided colliding in a heap on the floor. Kiba was impressed, but no matter how smoothly a man might move in play. A real fight was something else altogether.
"Almost had you that time." The one with the necklace smiled.
"Next time for sure." The other chimed in creepily.
"That will never happen." The supposed Goth King stated flatly as he regarded his 'followers'. Haku shook his head. Kimmi was fast, that was true, but he was far too full of himself without enough cause. Haku could break the man down in an instant and the man really had no idea.
"It's time for the next set." The one with the necklace said flatly.
"I'm coming." Kimmi turned his back on them, bowed slightly to Haku. "I hope you enjoy the show Haku-sama." He shot a dark look at Haku's 'friends' before turning on his heel and heading for the stage.
"Creepy." Kiba remarked as he watched the three men go.
Haku nodded understanding Kiba's meaning. "The one with the beads is Sakun. The other is Ukon."
Kiba just grunted. He already had names for them, Creepy Dee and Creepy Dum.
"What's up that Kimmi guy's ass?" Nara asked and he stroked Nar's hair. The blond looked like he was purring. He would have if he could have.
"Delusions of grandeur." Haku let out a long suffering sigh. "Don't mind him."
A slow eerie melody started to wind out through the air, swirling around the large room. Nara's head came up. "Their a cover band."
"Not always."
If they screwed up his favorite Voltaire song, Nara would be annoyed. Feathery Wings was a song he fell in love with the moment he heard it. Nara would never consider himself a morbid person, but he was prone to dark thoughts and mood swings of a sort. His friends were always there to pull/drag him out of whatever funk he might slip into from time to time. No one could remain dark and dreary with Nar around and if that wasn't enough, Kiba was capable of extreme schemes that could and had nearly killed him, just to take Nara's mind off whatever was bothering him.
Nar picked up on the vibe without consciously realizing it. They just knew each other so well that one could react to the others mood instantaneously. Nar nuzzled Nara's soft brown hair. "Hmm, you should wear it down more often." The blond whispered against his lover's ear.
Nara wasn't aware of the blush that graced his fine cheekbones. "Troublesome," he grumbled falsely as a warmth spread from where Nar's breath had touched him and throughout his whole body.
Haku was enjoying the show at the table and ignoring the one on the stage. Kiba found that amusing, since the singer's eyes kept returning over and over again to where the little raven was sitting. He glanced at Neji, who was clearly as captivated as Haku, but for different reasons. Kiba could only take so much sweetness before he got a toothache. There was really only one available distraction. "So, Haku?" Kiba smiled amiably. The little goth smirked at him knowingly and waited.
Nara looked up at the exchange and realized something. 'He's got your number Kiba... and he likes to play just about as much as you do...' He stifled a groan. 'This will not end well...'
"You his lover or something?"
Haku's face twitched noticeably, but the smirk came back full force as he leaned forward suggestively and whispered loudly. "Why? You interested?"
Kiba guffawed. He didn't know if he liked this guy, but he liked this guy. "Jus' curious."
Haku leaned back and took a sip from his drink. "I'm sure he'd like it to be that way, but no. I'm... picky." He finished looking at the table as he set the drink down. Nar felt a twinge at the same moment Kiba did. They'd touched on something unpleasant.
"Picky, huh? Well, I suppose a beauty like you can be." Kiba offered the words the same way he would clamp a comforting hand on the man's shoulder.
Haku gave him an appraising look before answering. Their eyes locked and a moment of understanding seemed to pass from one to the other. "People who only look at the outside are as much a reason to be picky as anything else." He answered far more honestly than he'd meant to.
There was pain in the air. A sharp electric pain and Kiba responded instinctively as was his nature.Kiba reached out and grabbed his chair, pulled him around so that he was sitting next to the brute facing the stage, a strong arm fell across his shoulders, and in response to Haku's astounded expression was a sharp toothy grin.
Haku hesitated too long in shock, by the time he figured out he should pull away, it was too late. It was as if there was a barrier keeping him from moving from that spot. Then, just as he had worked up the resolve to break free, Nar began chatting with him from his perch on Nara's lap and it was all over but the crying, he was glued to Kiba's side for the rest of the evening. It wasn't altogether unpleasant. The man was like a large dog, comforting and protective in a way that was neither overwhelming or demeaning. If it weren't for the deathly aura radiating from the stage, he might have even felt at ease.
Neji had been shocked for a moment at Kiba's response to Haku's comment. To Neji what Haku had said just made sense, but he was able to see that Kiba had reacted to something he himself had not seen or heard. He did not realize that in that moment Haku had reminded Kiba of himself and Shino; three people used to insulating themselves from others for their own protection and of course managed to hurt themselves in the process. Somehow Kiba was sure it was simply a matter of not having had what he had always had; a loving supportive, if crazy family and friends who would walk through hell for him. It irritated him and drove an irrational need to protect and comfort these sad, lonely people.
The night passed without incident, mainly because Haku had insisted they leave before the band finished up, claiming to be hungry. He offered to buy them all a bite to eat. Neji and Nara were just about to refuse when not only Nar, but Kiba as well agreed without a moments pause. Nara could have throttled them both. Haku had been rather sedate throughout the evening, the chances of that trend continuing were slim to none.
