Chapter 3: All The Numbers
Sasuke instinctively took a step back. Naruto once again stood before him, blue eyes biting into his own. Dark circles under his eyes matched the unbrushed blonde hair and wrinkled, rust colored t-shirt that hugged his muscular frame. He wore knee length joggers of a Heather gray that hung low on his hips, and high tops, that he hadn’t bothered to tie, that matched his shirt. He bore the same tired look Sasuke had seen on the faces of many coworkers stumbling into an early shift after a Holiday, like he’d been woken up too early after a night of heavy drinking. He stared back at Sasuke with little to no expression, as if he hadn’t just spoken. Sasuke glared at his greeting and attempted to go around him only to nearly walk into a second person.
“What’s wrong? Why did you- whoa!” The young red haired man that Sasuke had almost walked into put up a hand reflexively to protect himself. He was heavily tattooed, including his face, neck and hands. He had the same tired look about him that Naruto did, but the circles under his eyes we much more pronounced against his pale skin. His physique was slighter and more agile than Naruto’s and he was slightly shorter, wearing all black t-shirt, gym shorts, and shoes. A tan grocery bag hung loosely in the hand that hadn’t blocked Sasuke. The man looked back and forth between Naruto and Sasuke with a confused expression. He opened his both to say something, but Naruto cut him off.
“I’ll catch up with you later,” he said dismissively, still staring blankly at Sasuke.
The red haired man looked again at Sasuke, before mumbling a, “whatever,” and continuing on his way.
Sasuke stood momentarily frozen with uncertainty, as other customers sidled around their road block, throwing irritated glances in their direction.
“Can we talk?” Naruto asked him, as he tried to pass. There was still little to no expression in his voice.
“No.” Sasuke replied, regaining himself and successfully side stepping the blonde.
He heard a heavy sigh behind him before Naruto called out, “I’ll buy your groceries if you hear me out.”
Sasuke turned back. Naruto was looking over his shoulder at him, the afternoon light framing him in the doorway.
“You don’t even know what I’m getting,” he pointed out, but was very hesitant to decline the offer. He had a short shopping list, but with how busy his last semester had been, Sasuke hadn’t been able to pick up even a part time job, and funds were low.
“I’m not flinching.” Naruto stared him down with a deadpanned, almost bored expression that gave Sasuke the chills.
“Fine.” Sasuke agreed after careful thought. Free food was beat out whatever this idiot had to say to him. Naruto turned and silently walked over to him, gesturing with one hand for Sasuke to lead the way.
They walked in silence as Sasuke shopped. Naruto barely looked up from his phone, and Sasuke got the message that whatever conversation they were to have, this wasn’t the place for it. At some point Sasuke noticed the blonde had put headphones in so he couldn’t talk to him even if he had wanted to. Even as they went through check out, Naruto barely paid the cashier any attention, though she didn’t seem to be able to keep her eyes off him. Sasuke grabbed his groceries and they headed out. He couldn’t decide if he was getting nervous or irritated at his companions aloofness. He attempted a thank you, but it went unheard. Naruto let Sasuke lead he and steered them into a small nearby park. The area was heavily wooded with a jogging path and small playground. Sasuke often frequented this park to study, as it was usually deserted and quiet. He set his bags down and took up a seat on one of the swings of the vacant playground.
“So…,” he started as Naruto approached. Naruto disconnected his headphones, and for a moment and announcer and cheering crowd were audible, indicating he’d been listening to a game of some sort. He stuffed is phone and headphones back into his pocket and leaned against the a-frame of the metal swing set with his arms over his head. The stance caused his shirt to ride up and reveal the top inch or so of his underwear and several inches of his abs. It definitely didn’t go unnoticed by Sasuke. Naruto sighed and looked thoughtful as though he wasn’t sure how to begin the conversation.
“Well, we…” he began but trailed off quickly.
“You’re not gonna ask me out are you?” Sasuke tried to be helpful as he was getting hungry and wanted to leave.
“No. God no.” Naruto answered quickly with a grimace, and Sasuke was just as relieved as he was offended. “Well not exactly…”
“What do you mean, ‘not exactly,’” Sasuke asked suspiciously eying the blonde.
“What I mean is,” he stepped through the frame and tapped his fist against his forehead a couple times in frustration, before saying very quickly, “We’ve always hated each other, right, but when we used to get into fights, ya know, it sucked don’t get me wrong, but it was a good distraction, from… well, everything else.”
“You want to start a fight club?” Sasuke thought he understood now where Naruto was heading with his proposal, but watching the man struggle was priceless, and he couldn’t help but smile.
“No, I don’t want to start a fight club.” He glared at the the smirk firmly plastered on Sasuke’s face and folded his arms. “I am suggesting sex in place of punching each other in the face.” He finished monotonously.
“You’re straight, remember?” Sasuke needlessly pointed out pushing the swing to rock gently back and forth. He was still mulling over the thought and didn’t have an answer, though he startled himself that an immediate ‘No’ hadn’t surfaced. Wasn’t it just this morning he was trying to forget their last encounter? But then there had always been something about Naruto that drew him in. Or maybe it was that watching him be awkward was thoroughly amusing.
“Mostly,” Naruto tilted his head to the side as he answered. That did startle Sasuke. His eyes widened slightly and he stopped swinging.
“You wanna be fuck buddies?” He confirmed.
“If that’s what you want to call it.” He shrugged and took up the swing next to Sasuke.
“Why?” He was genuinely curious. Naruto was right, they had never liked each other, so was that why he thought it was a good idea? No strings attached? Or did that mean he had an ulterior motive?
Naruto sighed, slowly rocking his own swing. The side of his tanned face pressed against its heavy chain. He wasn’t looking at Sasuke, but off into the trees before them. “We’ve run into each other four times in the last week- ”
“Four?” Sasuke interrupted in surprise.
“I’ve seen you twice around town,” he said dismissively waving a hand. “I wasn’t sure it was you at first but then I saw you again, and then the bar, and then today.” He counted off each instance on his fingers.
Sasuke scoffed, “And you think it’s a sign we should have sex.”
Naruto shook his head, “It sounds stupid when you say it out loud.”
Sasuke let out a laugh. “It sounds stupid when you say it in your head too.”
“This was a bad idea,” Naruto groaned rubbing his temples.
“What makes you think I would even want that kind thing.” Sasuke asked him warily.
He shrugged. “You mentioned on the way back from the bar that you hadn’t been laid in six months.”
Sasuke paled, though the information wasn’t incorrect, “I don’t remember saying that.”
“Yeah, tequila does that.” The blonde nodded thoughtfully.
“So you find me attractive?” Sasuke teased, rocking the swing again.
Naruto pursed his lips and wrinkled his nose before answering. “More so with the make up, but yeah, I guess. I’m not blind. Every girl we went to school with didn’t fawn over you for no reason.”
Sasuke nodded, remembering their high school years. They were quiet for a moment, each battling their own thoughts.
“I haven’t said no.” Sasuke broke the silence as he looked over the other man. If he was honest with himself, he was still very much on fence, but beginning to lean more so to one side.
“I noticed.” He stretched out a had to Sasuke. “Hand me your phone.”
Sasuke handed it over without much thought, and Naruto turned the screen back at him to unlock it with the photo ID. He fiddled with the device for a few moments and then stood up from the swing. Tapping the phone softly to the top of Sasuke’s head, he said, “Text me when you decide.” And with that he walked away in the direction they’d come from.
Sasuke watched him go all the while thinking that Sakura had been right. He was quite different than the Naruto he remembered. Far from the loud, obnoxious, boisterous, almost wild boy Sasuke had once known, there was now a calm seriousness about him. While Sasuke was sure it must stem from sort of trauma, part of him he didn’t really want to acknowledge found it a little sexy.
Sasuke sat on the swing a bit longer, Mulling over his thoughts and enjoying the bright fresh air, before remembering he had a bag full of food that he needed to go in the fridge. He picked up his things and headed towards home. He was almost back to his apartment, when he heard his name being called.
“Sasuke.” The unfamiliar voice cam from behind him.
He turned to find Sai again in their hallway. “Yeah?” He asked cautiously. The two of them had never spoken that Sasuke could remember, and he hadn’t been aware that Sai knew his name.
“We had some classes together,” he stated.
“Yeah?” Sasuke said again. He was cute but this conversation was almost as frustrating as the one he’d just had in the park.
“So, I heard you were taking the summer off.” Another statement. What did he want?
Sasuke resisted saying ‘yeah’ again and attempted to be polite. “That’s right. I needed a break.”
Sai nodded. “If you want to keep your skills up,” he held out what looked like a business card to Sasuke, “we are hiring.”
Sasuke took the offered card. Konoha Emergency Veterinary Hospital. It stated in shiny, bold, red letters. “Thanks.” He replied, a little stunned, but Sai just waved over his shoulder has he’d already begun to walk away. Sasuke turned back to his door. It had been a strange day indeed.
Upon entering his apartment, he found Karin sitting at the kitchen counter, still in her scrubs, hunched over the pile of papers and books before her. Sasuke walked over to her, but she didn’t look up until he set the groceries down.
“Whatcha got?” She asked curiously perking up and eyeing the food. Her voice sounded stressed and tired.
Sasuke didn’t answer her at first, but pulled out his phone. He quickly pulled up Naruto’s number and set that, Sakura’s napkin, and Sai’s card on the counter in front of her. “I have a lot to tell you.” He said with a smile.
Karin beamed and shoved her notes aside. She pushed up her glasses and brought her elbows to rest on the counter, propping her chin up on the backs of her fingers. “Dinner and a show,” she winked, “I’m listening.”
