Author's note: This chapter has a lot of plot details. There is smut coming soon, I promise.
@Lord Sinnoh, thank you for the review. It's nice to know someone is paying attention to the details. There is a method to the madness as you will soon see.

.....
Twelve-year-old Sakura ran laps around the training ground with Sasuke and Naruto as Kakashi-sensei leaned against a tree, ostensibly supervising the genin as he read his precious pornographic book. They laughed as they ran, drawing the sensei’s eye. Kakashi’s masked face and lone eye stared into her eyes. “Sakura, wake up… wake up…” …
“Wake up! Wake up, you whore!” A loud, deep voice snarled.
Sakura felt bright lights through her closed eye-lids as a masculine hand patted her face too hard to be a friend. She held her eyes closed a moment longer, activating her chakra to take in her surroundings. Or rather, she tried to use chakra. It wasn’t working. She blinked, bright light silhouetting the imposing face in front of her. “Hello, Chief Inspector Saizo.”
She took in her surroundings quickly. She laid in an interrogation room of some kind. Chakra cuffs bound her hands and feet to the four corners of the table. Staring her in the face was the man she should have killed.
“Hello, Yoko. Though I doubt that is your true name. Welcome to my office.” He motioned to the bare concrete walls and the harsh overhead lights.
“Saizo, now I see why you are so cranky. Your work environment lacks feng shui.” Sakura quipped.
Saizo scowled, “You should be hanged. You assaulted me! An officer of the Yamagakure Militia.”
Sakura smiled, “You’re just mad that a little girl knocked you out.”
Saizo sneered back, “And you’re just sad that my men caught you, you little, spying whore.”
Sakura sighed, “Well, you haven’t killed me. You haven’t beaten me or tortured me. So, I must assume this is the part where you try to get what you want by being friendly.”
Saizo leaned back. As maddening as the kunoichi whore was, she was correct. He wanted her to talk and it was always best to begin gently. He wanted information from her, and he needed to reestablish his superiority after his men carried his unconscious body from that bar. Bested by a little girl! How could he have been so easily deceived? He refocused on the green eyed girl. “What makes you say that, my little kunoichi?”
Sakura sighed, “That’s just interrogation 101. Everyone knows you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. So, you begin by being nice, pretending you’re my friend, and so on. Then if that doesn’t produce the results you want, you go on to beating and torture. That’s what your ‘office’ tells me, in any case.” Keeping him talking was in her interest. He could let something slip that would help her escape.
Saizo’s eyes narrowed as he considered the woman on his torture table. It was difficult to take her seriously; she was so small and cute. She looked to be about 15, but what he knew of Konoha meant they’d never send an underage girl on a mission where sex would be involved. Naturally, he knew deception was a kunoichi’s bread and butter. She’d gotten him to underestimate her twice. Twice was a pattern the interrogator didn’t like. “Alright then, my little kunoichi, since we are being friendly, today all I want for you to tell me is your true name, age, and village of origin.”
Sakura raised an eyebrow. It was an odd look for a woman on her back. “But, that’s just information I’m obligated to give you anyway under the treaty of nations.”
Saizo smiled. This was progress. “So, are you going to tell me?”
Sakura rolled her eyes, “Haruno Sakura, Leaf shinobi, age eighteen.”
Saizo practically beamed, “Thank you for your cooperation, Sakura.” He stepped into the hallway briefly, returning with another shinobi, “Yoshi will escort you to your cell.” The groundwork was laid; he looked forward to more time with this subject.
As Sakura was shackled in a small prison cell, she realized she’d underestimated Saizo twice already. Twice! That was a pattern she needed to stop immediately.
Saizo turned to his aide once the prisoner was down the hall, “Hisao I want a file on my desk first thing in the morning with everything we can find out about Haruno Sakura of the Leaf.”
…
Hatake Kakashi leaned back in his chair, feet propped on his desk, with a small orange book in his left hand. He wasn’t actually reading, but the familiar position freed his mind to wander through the intelligence reports in an oddly productive way. The puzzle pieces formed a rather disturbing picture. Unsatisfied, he flipped the images in his head from place to place. He sat up and buzzed his assistant, “Tenzo, summon Nara Shikamaru and Yamanaka Ino please.” He needed feedback. The situation called for a certain level of escalation.
Before the copy ninja could return to his favorite recreational reading, an orange blur shot through the office door.
“Kakashi-sensei! You have to do something!” Naruto blurted out. The knuckleheaded ninja stood panting in front of the hokage’s desk.
Tenzo followed in behind the village hero, “I’m sorry hokage-sama. He wouldn’t wait.”
Kakashi nodded to his faithful assistant, “I’m sure. Just get those two I asked for here as soon as possible.” He sighed in mild frustration as he took in his former student. “What seems to be the trouble, Naruto?”
“Kurama says that Isobo has gone off the grid. None of the other tailed beasts knows where he is or can link with him. You’ve no idea, Kakashi-sensei! It’s like it’s the end of the world all over again. First Shukaku, and now Isobu. We have to do something! Something’s wrong. They were supposed to be free. I mean… I made them a promise, you know?” Naruto leaned on the hokage’s desk, his eyes pleading with his former sensei.
Kakashi rubbed his forehead as he leaned against his hand. In some ways Naruto was a man and in others he was still the twelve-year-old he’d tied to a post. “Naruto, take a seat. Ino and Shikamaru will be here shortly. I have a bad feeling they will need to hear your report as well.”
Naruto forced his fidgeting body into a chair across from his former sensei, “What do you mean, Kakashi-sensei? What else is going on?”
“Naruto, please. I haven’t been your sensei for several years. Call me Kakashi, or hokage-sama if we’re around other people. You’re making me feel old.”
Naruto waved him off. “Whatever. Kakashi. What else is going on?”
Tenzo popped his head in the door, “Excuse me, sir. I have Ino and Shikamaru.”
Kakashi smiled beneath his mask, “Excellent work, Tenzo. Send them in.”
The two young clan heads walked into the office, Ino in her usual attractive attire, Shikamaru slouching and looking disinterested with life.
Ino spoke first, “You summoned us, hokage-sama?”
Kakashi nodded, taking a moment to remove the large hat from his head. “Yes. I’ve been meaning to discuss some current events and recent intelligence reports with you. It happens that Naruto has some new and disturbing news to add to the pile. Fill them in, Naruto.”
Naruto nodded. “Well, at the end of the war, all the tailed beasts were freed, you know. Kurama stayed with me, Gyuki went back to Bee, and the rest kind of just went various places. Anyway, they have a telepathic link and they stay in touch with each other, just like any other family. So, a couple months ago, Kurama was kinda down and he told me that Shukaku had muttered something strange about visitors and then just totally dropped off the grid. Nobody has heard from him for like eight weeks now. And then now, well, Kurama waited ‘til today to say anything ‘cause he wanted to be sure. Isobu has disappeared too. Just poof. They aren’t dead, but none of the others can sense them.”
Shikamaru raised an eyebrow. “Someone is collecting tailed beasts then?”
Kakashi nodded, “I’m afraid so. This is the latest intelligence from Yamagakure.” He handed a scroll to the young strategist.
Shikamaru glanced through the scroll, Ino and Naruto reading over his shoulder.
Naruto spouted off, “Hey, this is Sakura’s handwriting. Do you mean to tell me Sakura is in Yamagakure? That you sent her there?”
Kakashi sighed. “Actually, Naruto, I wasn’t going to tell you that. She’s undercover and it’s top secret. For her safety, I suggest you keep your big mouth shut about that.”
Naruto was hurt. The idea that he would do anything to endanger his favorite pink haired teammate pained him deeply. “Kakashi-sensei, you know I would never do anything like that. It’s just… I mean… She’s a medic and you sent her in as a spy?”
Kakashi’s dark eyes narrowed as he glowered at his former student, “She’s a kunoichi of the leaf and she follows orders. I expect you to do the same, Naruto.”
Naruto swallowed hard, “Of course, hokage-sama. Please forgive me, I meant no disrespect. It’s just… She’s Sakura, you know?”
Ino piped in, “I think we all care about Sakura, Naruto. Hokage-sama, if I may, considering her report and what Naruto just told us, why is Sakura still there?”
Kakashi rubbed his forehead again. It was an excellent question. “Sakura believes there is more important intelligence to be gained by her current placement and I’m trusting her judgement on this. In the meantime, Shikamaru, we need to prepare for every contingency.”
Shikamaru nodded, “Of course, sir. I’ll outline a series of plans today.”
Kakashi replied, “Keep me apprised. Ino, please consult whatever sources you can and find out any leads on Shukaku and Isobu. Also, anything at all from Yamagakure.”
Ino affirmed, “Yes, sir. I’m on it.”
Naruto huffed, “So that’s it? What about Sakura? We gotta get her out of there, Kakashi-sensei. And we’ve got to search for the missing tailed beasts. We just have to! Please!”
Kakashi sighed, “Naruto, I’m adding you to the contact team going to retrieve Sakura’s intel at the next drop. You’ll be leaving with them in three weeks.”
Naruto’s eyes widened, “Three weeks! But – “
Kakashi raised his voice slightly, “Naruto, three weeks from now. I will not jeopardize her cover by having you storm in there half-cocked. Understand?”
Naruto bowed slightly, “Yes, hokage-sama.”
Kakashi went on, “In the meantime, please let Kurama know we share his concern for his brothers and we are working diligently to find them.”
Naruto nodded, “Yes, hokage-sama.”
Kakashi looked over the shinobi before him. They’d certainly grown up well. “Now all of you, get out of my office. I have important work to do.”
The three ninjas bowed and left.
Kakashi put his feet back on the desk and pulled out a well-worn, orange jacketed book.
…
A surprised and nervous Sakura sat opposite her interrogator in what could only be described as a very pleasant office. Crisp white walls were simply adorned with landscape paintings. One wall held a chalkboard and maps. Another wall had what appeared to be two closet doors, a built-in bookcase, and a warm gas fireplace. A plain black desk, a few simple chairs, and a potted plant in the windowsill, completed the room with an elegant and welcoming feel. She fidgeted with the chakra control bracelet. She wasn’t sure what day it was, having been kept in the dark cell and fed at odd intervals, but the stubble on her leg hairs suggested two to three days had passed. The sunlight peeking through the clouds outside suggested late afternoon, but without knowing the building orientation, it could easily be morning.
Saizo smiled, “So, my little kunoichi, do you like the feng shui of this office better?” The tall man sat straight at his desk, his hands folded lightly over some papers. It was a startling turn these events were taking, but then, his job was to follow orders and find information. Sometimes it was better not to overthink things.
Sakura struggled to reconcile her current surroundings with her status. Why was she suddenly in a nice office rather than the interrogation chamber? Saizo was obviously unhappy, but why? He was putting on a brave face, but her keenly honed observation skills noted the small twitch of his eyelid and the way his hands folded over. She opted to stall as her agile mind worked with the clues at hand. “You have a lovely office, sir.” She replied.
Saizo stayed quiet, relishing her furrowed brow as the kunoichi squirmed in front of him. She was obviously forcing a calm façade, but the lines on her face gave her away. Bile churned in his stomach as he continued with his duty. “Darlin’, I’ll get right to the point. Hideo wants to marry you and keep you as his wife. Therefore, I’m offering you this deal. I strongly suggest you accept the terms.” He turned the paper on his desk around and put it forward for Sakura to read.
A fly could have landed on her tongue unnoticed. Surely this was some kind of mind game. Sakura forced composure back to her face, steeling her features as she read the bizarre contract before her. The document itself was simple. She’d renounce her citizenship with the leaf, pledge her allegiance to the Yamakage, marry Hideo, and produce children for Yamagakure. The cognitive dissonance washed over her mind in tall waves. “What game are you playing with me, Saizo?” The glare of her green eyes cut into his steel gray orbs. Try as she might, he had no tell.
Saizo remained intentionally cool, “It is no game, darlin’. That is a legitimate marriage contract. You should accept it immediately.”
Sensing a tiny piece of leverage, Sakura pressed in, “If you want me to accept these terms, I have questions. I’d appreciate honest answers.”
Saizo smiled wickedly. Perhaps the girl would serve his purposes after all. “I tell you what, my little kunoichi. I’ll make you a deal. I will promise to always answer your questions honestly if you will do me the same courtesy.”
Sakura contemplated her options. It wasn’t much, but she was not exactly in a strong bargaining position. “Very well, you have my word as a ninja that anything I tell you is true to the best of my knowledge so long as you are honest with me. I’m a medic; I’ll know if you lie.”
Saizo grinned. This might end up well after all. “Naturally. Darlin’, this may go without saying, but in my line of work, I’ll know if you’re fibbing to me. What is it you want to know?”
Sakura pointed to the paper in front of her, “How is this even possible? Surely Hideo is in prison or dead as a traitor.”
Saizo winced, unable to restrain his reaction. “My little kunoichi, Hideo is not only the Yamakage’s personal assistant, he is his nephew.”
Sakura stroked her chin thoughtfully, “I see… That explains how an idiot like him got a job like that, and possibly why he hasn’t been hanged. However, that does not explain how it is that he’s free and capable of putting something like this together. Please explain.”
Saizo drummed his fingers on his desk. Her keen mind was not to be underestimated. “Before I answer that question, I have one for you, Sakura. What is your opinion of our battle plan?”
Sakura raised an eyebrow, “What does that have to do with this? And why do you want my opinion anyway? I’m a medic, not a tactical analyst.”
Saizo replied coolly, “Trust me; it’s pertinent. Answer the question.”
Sakura bit her lower lip idly as she considered her words, “I don’t trust you, but since I can’t see how answering your question would harm Konoha in any way, I will answer you.” She shifted in her chair, reading his reactions carefully as she went on. “I expect you could have some success initially. Your forces are well trained and strong. However, there are only 3 bridges across the river between here and the Land of Fire. Once those are down, resupply problems will stop your advance. Your plan to use the tailed beasts as weapons of mass destruction is also doomed. The other beasts won’t tolerate the sealings and once they find your jinchuriki, those men are as good as dead. Ultimately, you might gain a bit of territory on the other side of a natural geographic boundary for a while, but the cost will be high in terms of lives and materials. In a year, you’ll be weaker than you were ten years ago.”
Saizo smiled. “I knew you were clever for a girl… Now, darlin’, let me see you put the pieces together.”
Sakura cringed at the backhanded compliment. This village was so backwards – the way they treated women, the way everyone smoked cigarettes, the way they adored their kage practically to the point of worship. A wry smile came to her lips as the puzzle began to take shape. “It might help if you gave me a cigarette.”
Saizo raised an eyebrow, “The medic who likes our tobacco. Sakura you are just full of surprises, aren’t you?”
He tapped out two cigarettes from the pack on his desk. Handing one to the young woman, he lit his own. Then, rather than lighting hers with the lighter, he leaned across the desk, touching the ends of the cigarettes together, their faces mere inches apart. The fragrance of her unwashed essence mingled with the scent of tobacco in an exotic, arousing way.
Sakura inhaled deeply. She’d been craving tobacco ever since they’d left the bar. The intimacy of the light was not lost on her as she couldn’t help noticing his manly scent mingled with the faint odor of soap and aftershave. It must be morning after all. She leaned back in the chair, relishing the feel of nicotine coursing through her veins. “It’s a guilty pleasure.” She explained. “Let me see if I’ve got this straight. Your Yamakage thinks he can win a war with Konoha using this strategy. He also indulges his family members to the extent that his idiot nephew is to be rewarded for his folly by getting a bride instead of a prison sentence. Though some might argue marriage is a prison sentence of another kind, we all know Hideo is head over heels in love with me, so he would not see it as a burden. Quite the contrary.” The ninja took another long drag as she continued her thinking. “I take it no one ever disagrees with the Yamakage? What about your feudal lord?”
Saizo replied, “The Yamakage assassinated the feudal lord ten years ago and took his title. He is both the feudal lord and the kage. Let’s just say that disagreeing with him can be hazardous to one’s health.”
Sakura nodded as she quickly processed the unfortunate information. “I see… Thank you for the offer, but I decline.”
Saizo stiffened at her remark, “My little kunoichi, that is not in your best interest. You should know that while the Yamakage considered Hideo’s request for you, he also read the file on you. He plans to put your medical skills and experience to use here too.”
Sakura took another long drag, the delightful tobacco nearly gone now. “Why do you want me to accept so badly, Saizo?”
Saizo looked down a moment, then held her deep green eyes with his steel gaze, “Contrary to my image, I do not enjoy hurting young women. You should take the offer.”
Sakura extracted the last of the nicotine and put the remains of her treat in the ashtray. “I appreciate your concern, chief inspector. My answer is still no. I’ll take the honest torture over a lifetime with a fool.”
Saizo persisted in staring her down. “I can see you need some time to think about this.” He buzzed his intercom, “Yoshi. Escort the prisoner back to her cell.”
