Disclaimer: I own nothing of the Naruto franchise and make no money off this in any way, shape, or form. |
Edit:9/26/18 I really hope no one read this in the two days it was up. Im tempted to take it down because I'm sure I missed a lot. Yikes that was bad and sloppy. Part of it was due to the first half being written 6 months ago, and the other half was me rushing to actually write the rest so I didn't put it off again.
AN: Well last time I said I was keeping the chapter short with the reasoning being “so I don't burn out and not update for three months or so like last time.” That didn't happen so sorry. There's been a multitude of reasons for this.
Firstly, this story flies outside of stuff covered by my personal experience so I'm kinda flying blind here. If a fic isn't supposed to be realistic then I don't care, but if I'm writing some scifi story where the ship has a railgun, I'll feel the need to end up four pages into the google search results on electromagnetic fields to make sure I'm being somewhat accurate. Unfortunately I wanted this fic to be somewhat realistic, decided to write about something I have very little knowledge on, and then realized that its dumb hard to actually try and learn anything about this topic (sex and abnormal relationships) as its somewhat taboo to talk about in detail, much less actually set up any sort of scientific study for. Ended up reading all of Nana to Kaoru to try and wrap my head around bondage (great manga, shitty ending tho, also pun intended).
Second, I'm unsure where I want to take this. I've been stuck at the end of chapter two for ages because there were a couple ways I coulda gone with the fic and they all kinda branch off after that point so I had to choose between a couple of ideas that I liked almost equal amounts
Finally I don't write much. Even without the other things it still would have taken about two months so yah. (I know this was a wall of text but I didn't want to take up three pages with AN, so I cut spacing)
With that being said, here's some stuff about the following chapter, The formatting is gonna be a bit different. Gotten a few reviews about the page breaks being too small in ch1 and ch2 and the paragraphs being too long in ch1. I think I fixed the second issue but I'm gonna try to figure something out for page breaks. Gimme feedback and I'll change the fic to uniformly use whichever one gets more support.
Final point, had this at the end but it makes more sense here. I drew a rough outline of the apartment for consistency's sake. Figured I'd just write down the points as if they're on a graph, if you wanted to draw it out to see.
A(0,15)B(9,15)C(18,15)D(0,12)E(9,12)F(9,10)G(18,10)H(6,6)I(9,6)J(0,0)K(6,0)L(9,0)M(15,0)
Here are how the rooms are segmented, Ill just write down the corners of each room, as the way the points connect should be obvious and this Authors note is way too long.
ABDE=Balcony, BCFG=Kitchen, FGLM=Bedroom, HIKL=EntryHall,DEHIJK = Living Room.(its kind of L shaped). That's probably confusing as hell and I doubt anyone cares, but its something I often wished the author would do when they said things like “I drew out a map for the village” or things like that. But I'm pretty sure this site has strict rules against external links so I cant really post a pic.

Chapter 3: No plan survives first contact with the enemy
Hinata smiled into her cup of tea as she and Sakura sat at their center table and watched Naruto working in the kitchen. They'd moved into the living room to avoid getting in Naruto's way while he cooked, but their view of him was limited each time he walked out the doorway's line of sight (which thankfully wasn't often because the stove was right across from the doorway). It was a damn shame he did because she could stare at him all day.
The group had begun to catch up as soon as Naruto walked in the door. Naruto had been shocked at the news that his former teammates had split, and so poorly. Hinata had listened to the struggles of her friends as they both complained to each other about all the paperwork they were getting as their teachers prepared them to take over, Sakura taking Tsunade's place as head of the hospital, and Naruto starting the long journey to take over for Kakashi.
The group had been talking for nearly an hour and while the chatter had been nonstop earlier, the girls had noticed Naruto's responses get delayed and vague at intervals. It wasn't until Hinata noticed his brow crumple up in the most adorable concentrating face that she realized he was focusing on his cooking whenever this happened. The two girls had naturally fallen into his flow of temporarily breaking off conversation when he reached a point that took away his focus. This was one of those brief moments and Hinata had come to enjoy the silent breaks where she could simply sit there and bask in the company of her two companions with bright colored hair.
Naruto finished chopping up some vegetables and threw them into a pot of boiling water, he picked up a wooden spoon and began to turn, and began to re-initiate conversation with his two female hosts.
“Are you guys sure this is fine? I mean not everyone likes the same food I do, and if you tell me to 'cook whatever I'm best at' that just boils down to what I like best because its what I make most.” He grinned at the small snort and light giggle that his little joke won him from the girls.
After making eye contact and rolling her eyes with a smirk, Sakura responded. “Nah, its fine. He's the type of guy who's fine with mostly anything. The type of person who makes the best out of any situation.” Sakura smiled as she and Hinata stared at the T-shirt clad back of the man in question as he stirred a boiling pot of vegetables.
Naruto jerked slightly. That was right. The reason the girls were making a large dinner was because they were having company, male company. The way the two talked about the mystery man, you'd think the sun shone out of his ass. Objectively speaking he knew this guy was probably just some friend. Even if he wasn't Naruto had no business butting in, but he really really wanted to.
That made him sound like some creepy possessive stalker. When they first mentioned a dinner guest he hadn't really registered or cared about the male pronoun. It wasn't until later when Sakura was complaining about being single that Hinata had accidentally thrown his mind into a whirl.
“Well Sakura, that won't be forever.” The girl had said with a knowing wink. Sure they said anything that connected that little interaction to the mysterious male guest, but it set him off and afterwords he couldn't help noticing the fond looks in their eyes when talking about the mystery man.
A small crack opening up in the handle of the wooden spoon alerted Naruto to the fact that his grip had been a bit too tight. The slightly worn “NinjaGearPlus+” label on the handle told him that his grip had actually been far too strong, and that a normal spoon would already be splinters in his hand. He shook his head and worked his way back into the conversation, glad the girls had grown used to him spacing out.
“Ha ha, sounds like a nice guy.” Naruto bit back, glad his back was to the two girls. A timer went off and Naruto propped the now slightly rougher spoon on the edge of the boiling pot, before leaning down and pulling the oven open with his left hand, and grabbing a hot tray with his right.
“Naruto! Just because your hand can take a beating, doesn't mean you need to put it through one every day. It takes a lot of work to make those and if you break one on anything besides a mission, it's coming out of your wallet!”
“Oh, guess you have a point.” and with a hidden smirk, Naruto tossed the hot pan to his other hand. Sakura seemed to freeze in surprise while Hinata knocked over her chair and stood up as if to come help him.
“Relax you two,” Naruto held up his free hand and a blue glow could be seen on his palm “I'm not that big of an idiot. After learning the pain of all shape manipulation that is my only real jutsu, small chakra shells are literally things I can whip up without thinking about it.” While Naruto's number of jutsu was very low, let no one say that his use of them was limited. It took a real special kind of person to use the third basic training step for the rasengan as an oven mitt.
As they watched the blond boy spin back around, the two girls turned to each other. They seemed to communicate with their eyes, although even if an outsider could read the conversation it wouldn't make sense. “You should do it.”, “Me? It was your idea to do it this way!”, “Fuck you”, “I totally will, but you still have to do it.” “Fine.”. There may have also been a good bit of arm waiving and pointing going on, its hard to argue with just eye movements.
“Naruto, I-if we're being honest there was actually another reason we called you over.” Hinata bit the inside of her cheek. Ugh there comes that stutter back again at the worst possible time. She tried to stay calm and act natural, but the tapping sound of Sakura's foot betrayed the pinkette's nerves and in turn did nothing to help the tension rising in Hinata.
Naruto's ear twitched in the other room. His neck turned half towards them and his shoulders tensed up as he responded with a “Yah?”. He tried to keep working on the meal but the girls could both tell he was curious and that his attention was trained on him. Their years of ninja training allowed them to notice these kinds of things with ease. Also the fact that he had stopped actually cutting up the apple, and was now just making a chopping motion between the two halves.
Sakura grabbed Hinata's shaking hand with her own and gave the girl a nod. Their fingers intertwined without looking at each other, both sets of eyes trained on the spiky blond cook.
“Well, umm, do you think. I mean what do you think about, umm have you ever wondered if three, or just more than two people could be in a relationship?”
Naruto could feel the thoughts running through his head. Some part of him trying to fight off a flood of fantasies about himself and the two girls, another part remembering the days of the academy with Saskue, Ino and Sakura, a third part of him picturing the mystery man with an arm around Hinata's shoulder and another around Sakura's waist. And one final part of his brain tried to come up with an actual answer to the question, but found itself struggling to make sense of the topic with almost all the brain's processing power being used for the first three trains of thought.
“Hmm, well isn't that what teams are. Just a small little family of three.” Naruto knew thats not what the girl had been talking about, but he couldn't think of anything to actually say so he diverted the conversation.
With a sense of urgency in her voice Hinata tried to clarify what she said. “N-no, w-well what I meant was. D-do you think It's possible for three people to date each other, l-like two girls and one guy. Each person liking the other two in the trio and going out or something.” The as Hinata kept talking her nerves stopped manifesting as a stutter and just made her talk faster, as if her desire to finish talking overrode her shy tendencies.
Hinata's leg wound around Sakura's as her emotional tension manifested in the physical clenching of her muscles. The girl seemed to curl up into a ball, while her posture didn't change much he back hunched over slightly and her arms pulled in a bit as if preparing to assume a fetal position. Sakura decided to take over.
“Naruto you're one of the most accepting and open minded people in the world you're also our friend so I guess we wanted to see what you thought about it. Because if you couldn't accept it than no one could.” Sakura spoke with precision that almost sounded relaxed. As if she was speaking clearly because her head was clear, and not because she had practiced that exact line.
This was the start of their plan. First the girls would see what Naruto's thoughts were on the Idea overall. Hopefully he would be open to the idea and be supportive of his friends. Then the two girls were trying to 'show off' a bit with the clothes they were wearing. Hoping to get Naruto to notice them as girls. When they were done setting up the girls would spring the surprise on him, banking on the whole “two for one deal” aspect to keep him interested enough to at least hear the out. Over dinner the girls could open up about their feelings. Make Naruto see that the emotions they both had for him were real. If words weren't enough, both girls were fully prepared to try and use actions to get the point across.
The plan was perfect. Or at least it was as close as it could be to perfect. Sakura had to stay strong for now, while the plan did have risks they wouldn't come until later so if she couldn't be calm now, there was no way she could be when the girls took the riskier steps in the plan, like actually confessing to him. Knowing Naruto he might run out when they did, hold on. What on earth was he doing?
Despite their affection for him, the two girls made the same mistake that countless powerful ninja before them made. They underestimated Naruto's natural ability to see patterns and come up with surprisingly accurate answers based off of his intuition.
Before Sakura had even finished her sentence Naruto's mind was a blur. All the various thoughts running through his head shattered like glass, except for one. The dark silhouette of the mystery man with an arm around the two girls who Naruto coveted more than any other. His mental image of the mystery man slipped his hands lower, the one on Hinata's shoulder now cupping her chest, and the one on Sakura's waist now groping her ass. The two girls blushed and hugged themselves against the mystery man as an evil sharp toothed smirk that was too wide for a human mouth light up the figure's face.
Fuck. Fuck. Fuck, fuckity fuck fuck. It was too much, Naruto could feel emotions swirling within him, mostly regret, jealousy, and anguish. Without even really thinking he put a swift plan into action, his gift for getting out of sticky situations manifesting even with his hampered mental state. His hand reached for an open container of something that could have been salt or spices or whatever, and he pulled at it with a jerk. The contents spilled and went flying out the top, into his nose and mouth. It didn't really make him cough as much as he thought it would so he had to force it a bit.
“Ah damn, I-I got something in my face, need some fresh air.” He tried and failed to keep his voice flat. He really did. These two girls meant the world to him and were looking for his approval and support right now. He wanted to be strong, he needed to be. That was who he was, that was who they wanted right now. He should support them no matter what, come rain or shine he should be there ready to back them up if they needed him. But he just couldn't do it.
Sakura and Hinata watched Naruto's poor performance. The could hear his voice crack. They felt the wind rush in as he opened the door and he slipped outside. Hinata's eyes flashed and she saw Naruto. Sakura saw Hinata mouth to her 'He's crying”.
Both girls felt a bolt of confusion and concern hit them right in the chest. The sound of two chairs being pushed back quickly was followed by one clattering to the floor from the excess force, and then the sound quick footfalls fell as two girls rushed to their balcony door.

Sasuke sat up in bed and felt his gaze wander in the direction of the leaf village as his rinnegan flashed purple. The stage had been set. He could feel the fate of the world shift and lock onto its new course.
“This is it, this is most assuredly the proper course of action. Its the way things must be for him to stay strong.” He whispered into the wind, speaking to no one but himself. The last ability he'd unlocked in his rinnegan was the ability to share his vision with anyone else who had the same eye as him, even across time itself. Because of this, Sasuke saw all the futures where he lived and had at least one of the divine eyes, he saw the path things were going and decided to change it. Naruto couldn't become Hokage. He would work too hard, give too much. It would deprive him of the connections that gave him his near infinite strength, and when they needed him again, his 'will of fire' would be too dim to cast out the dark.
Naruto needed to be forced into a situation where the only way he could help others properly was to help himself. He needed to learn to be selfish sometimes so he could remain the idealistic hope of the ninja world, instead of a worn down and tired leader.
A tear slowly fell down Sasuke's face as he thought of what would have been. He grieved for his daughter with Sakura and the family they would have had. He brushed aside those thoughts by reminding himself of all the struggling the little family would have with him out all the time. The woman with no time for anything except her job and trying to raise her child by herself, and the little girl who wouldn't have even seen her father's face in person for the first years of her life. Sakura would be happier now, he had seen it.
He wondered what his old friends would think. They'd probably yell at him for putting on a hair brained self sacrificing scheme where he looked like the bad guy, kind of like his brother had. Then Naruto would probably make some comment about his acting skills being up there with those of the snow country Damiyo, before dragging all three off to Ichiraku. Nothing could keep an Uzumaki from ramen.
With that thought, Sasuke turned back to his bed and saw a red haired medic fast asleep in their shared bed. A small grin crept up on his face as he lied back down and pulled the woman to him. She let out a few murmurs at the movement but settled back down. As he felt himself drift away into sleep he quietly whispered to himself.
“Well, this future isn't that bad either.” and images of children with red hair and spinning red eyes to match, filled his dreams.

Naruto let his head rest against the outside wall of the building and slowly slipped to the ground of the girls' porch. Regrets weren't something he liked. It had taken a long time, but eventually he'd been able to learn to live with most of his regrets. The people who he couldn't save, the mentors who were almost family to him, the faces of all those who'd died just to try and keep him and B safe.
Those were things he'd learned to live with. He could move on, and even if he didn't forget them, he would have days where he didn't think about them. However his regrets in regards to the people who were still alive were things that couldn't go away, couldn't fade to the back of his mind when they were always there in front of him.
Before he could even begin to fall back into the memories of his mistakes, or try and put himself back together, the door he had just exited was wrenched back open as Hinata and Sakura came spilling out. The two girls nearly fell over themselves as their frantic haste was quickly muted by the sight of Naruto hunched over and dim.
He looked up with a shaky smile and sloppily dried cheeks. “H-hey guys, sorry about th-that.” His stuttering was less caused by him having trouble getting the words out, and more because he could feel something rising up in his chest that he was trying to keep in.
Sakura sat down hard beside him, her hand grabbing his upper arm and holding onto it as she saw Hinata sit down cross legged in front of his shins. His old teammate reached out her hand and placed it on his upper arm. “Naruto, whats wrong?”
“I'm fine, lets get back to cooking.” He said with a slightly firmer grin as he tried to stand up. Emphasis on tried because Sakura pulled him back down immediately.
“No Naruto, that can wait. Please.” Sakura pulled on his arm and tried to get him to look at her but he broke eye contact and turned away.
“Forget it,” he said as he began to shift and tense under her grip “It has nothing to do with you guys, don't worry about it.” Naruto was too wound up to even try and hide the subtle signals of the lie from Hinata, who saw them even without her all seeing eyes.
“So what, we're your friends so just tell us already.” Sakura pulled his arm towards her again and he whipped away. Shoving her arm off and snapping back at her.
“It's nothing, its just something old and stupid that doesn't matter.” he said, as he curled away from both girls, hiding his face from them. Sakura went silent and still. She didn't know what to do, she didn't know what was wrong. She couldn't figure out how to fix it and might have stayed there frozen for a good long time if Hinata hadn't broken in right then.
Hinata slowly moved her arms towards Naruto, her hands snaking around his face and pulling it towards her, revealing his tear stained eyes to the girls. She softly drew his head towards her chest until his forehead was pressed against her collar bone and his face was resting in her chest. “It does matter Naruto, otherwise it wouldn't be hurting you so much.” As his physical resistance broke, his emotional resistance went with it and he began to open up to the two girls.
“I- Im sorry.” He said with a shaking tone. Sakura moved her hand on his shoulder and began to rub circles around his upper back. “It's not fair of me, it was ages ago and I should have just forgotten it. It was just this stupid little memory that I kept because I wanted to have had someone say it.” Naruto's head shook as he talked, wanting to shut down there but continuing on “I couldn't just accept how dumb I'd been because I-I just wanted at least one memory of someone telling me they loved me.” Hinata couldn't help grabbing the back of Naruto's head and pulling it close to make sure he was real, too many dreams had ended up that way. Sakura half expected Naruto to break down and lock up, but instead he started talking faster and faster, as if worried that they would leave now that they knew.
“I told you it's stupid. I shouldn't be bothered by it and I don't want you guys to think I'm some creep obsessively stalking you both based off something you said years ago. I get that I messed it all up back then and I would have been fine with it if you were still dating Sasuke, or if you'd started dating Kiba or something,” Naruto didn't bother to explain who was being paired with each of those boys. “I guess its just the fact that you're both going after one guy.” He could feel Hinata almost jump in surprise, but Sakura apparently had figured out that Naruto wouldn't have run if he didn't put two and two together and get something he didn't like. “Even if you were both dating someone I wouldn't really think about it at the same time, ya know? So I guess its like in some small part of me I could pretend that the other one was still in love with me or something.” At this point Naruto had slowed down and leaned back, Hinata letting him go and Sakura moving her arm down to the ground.
He opened his eyes, and looked at them. “I know its dumb, but it was just some small part of me that I guess I didn't even know was there, so having it crushed like that was kinda surprising, I'm sorry guys. I really am. You two are probably the only two who I'm still really friends with, and I don't wanna push you away like that over some guy who's name I don't even know.” Naruto looked at them both and mustered up a shaky grin that was sincere but painful. He looked at the two young ladies who he'd poured his heart out to and saw them exchange a look before staring into his eyes in a way that made him want to melt.
“Naruto you Idiot,” Sakura said with a slowly growing smile. She leaned over and pressed a kiss into his red and salty cheek. Her soft lips impacting him like one of her fully powered punches. Before he even had time to processing what she was talking about, Hinata put her hand on his knee and leaned forward.
“The guy we both like is you.” and with that she kissed his lips quickly before spinning around to site on the side opposite Sakura. The blue haired girl pulled his arm around her shoulder and let it hang limp as she pressed into his side. Naruto sat there, both girls sitting in silence as they waited for a response. Naruto was struggling to work through the emotional roller coaster that had happened that afternoon. It was far too good to be true, he was about to assume it was a lie, just some prank or genjutsu. Then he remembered the depth of his regret just minutes earlier. He wouldn't fuck it up again, even if some part of him thought it was doomed to fail, another part thought he wasn't worth it, and another still thought they would quickly change their minds, Naruto knew that he had to try, that he couldn't give up. The mental image of his younger self standing ontop of the Hokage monument came to mind, and the small blond shouted out to the world, “I'll never give up, and I never go back on my word! Thats my Nindo: my ninja way!”
With that thought in mind Naruto pulled the two girls closer to him as if to reassure himself it was all real, one hand squeezing on Hinata's chest and the other Sakura's rear as a grin light up his face that was so wide, it almost seemed impossible for it to fit on a human face.

AN: Wow why the hell did this take so long? Well I have a really bad habit of abandoning story ideas around 30k words, also the first chapter of this story is one of the better things I've ever written. That sounds cocky and like a good thing but it was kind of annoying because this chapter is one of the more important ones emotionally but I kept comparing it to what I'd written earlier and finding it lacking, I still wanna erase everything I just finished writing and start over. Also first year of college was a bitch on my free time.
In regards to plot shit, the Sasuke bit seems Cliche, but “Dickish and randomly evil Sasuke” is even more of a Naruto Fanfic Trope. This also serves to validate the abnormal relationship a bit more. Its not that everything just happened to work out against all the odds, its that there were tons of other timelines where this didn't happen and the only reason we're reading about this one is because its the world where it did happen.
Naruto sorts through his emotions pretty fast because that's how he is in cannon. This interaction has a similar weight and timing to the time where he first meets his dad, and Naruto quickly sorts through his issues with that.
Finally in regards to character relationships. Im trying to keep up the characters all having different strengths and weaknesses that balance out. Hinata has this weird issue where she has such a small amount of screen time that shes almost an OC in terms of personality which means she often gets Mary Sue-ed. Im trying to keep that minimal. Another weird thing I'm trying to balance that I'd appreciate feedback on is PoV. Im attempting to balance more than one character (which usually ends up failing) so any input on that would be great.
In response to some reviews, won't do this with all of them but these two were really helpful.
Dedicated Reader 842: Thanks for the insider info and kind words. There's not much info I can find on this topic and it almost seems like it only happens in fiction, so you saying “Yah its a real thing, heres some tips on how it works.” Is a huge help.
Scrubavore: Thanks for the tips, do you know how to properly orient a single line instead of the whole chapter on the AFF site itself? I write it in open office but transferring it over messes with a lot of the spacing.
Minor spoiler warning, stop reading here if you care. A lot of people have talked about ideas they had for the conflicts that should/would arise in this situation. Most of the romantic drama that's common in Naruto fanfics with any romance focus, wont be here. The issues common in those make a lot less sense when your characters are adults who have been through a lot and are long past the point where they trust each other with their lives. A lot of the issues that a three person relationship would have will happen, but won't be shown (though some will).
The main focus of this story is to have the conflict be their relationship fighting the issues in their lives. The bond they have won't be the cause of their troubles and will instead be what helps them get over their problems. Maybe that is unrealistic, but I wanted to write a story where these three all need each other and grow stronger because of it. Beyond that just being the type of story I'm writing, I get annoyed by a lot of relationship drama in stories because most of it comes down to poor communication, which becomes really frustrating when the audience can see the issue from both perspectives. In real life it happens a lot and in more visual media it works, but in a story that shows each character's thoughts its just aggravating.
