Sasuke wanted to leave for Konoha immediately, but he waited impatiently for Kakashi. The little village was too small for a hotel, and instead they had taken a room over the Inn at the crossroads. It was barely an inn. It was more of a house with a beer barrel in an added on room with benches and a table, and an overexcited "innkeeper". He had been disappointed that they hadn't wanted any beer, but he rented the room to them.
The rented room's walls began to feel like they were closing in on him. Someone had made a very poor attempt to make it look like a proper hotel. They had hung a painting that looked as if it had been bought at a thrift store, filled with large, faded blue flowers and with a crack in the glass. It must have been a relic from some grandmother's attic, and the shabbiness of it repulsed Sasuke. There was something wrong with the attempt, as if the person trying wanted to capture something beyond her level of culture. She probably thought she'd done a great thing for the "inn".
The place smelled vaguely of something foul that he couldn't place, possibly a dead rat. As he sat on the bed Sasuke tried not to think about how many people had slept there before him, how many men had come on those blankets, and how long ago they had been washed. He could hear everything in the next room, and as he listened to the "maid" - probably the fat wife he'd seen outside - vacuuming he had to get out.
He used a henge of an old man with white hair, slightly balding, a little paunchy. He matched the henge's clothes to those of the locals, wearing brown pants and a slightly darker shirt.
How do people live in places like this? he wondered. He couldn't help but wonder why anyone would stay here. It had a few houses, low quality wood and stone buildings with pink flowers in front in a vain effort to dress them up. Sasuke kicked at a stone on the dirt main street and tried to imagine such a boring life. The few shops there were small and had handmade signs on the windows proclaiming the quality of their goods.
The village wasn't along a major trade route, and though traffic did go through it, the small hamlet seemed to depend on farming and livestock for its trade. He bought a bowl of badly made, watery soup at one of the few dining places in the town, a small roadside stand with an owner who was a little too excited to get a customer.
He wondered what it would be like to live in Konoha again. Would it feel like a larger version of this place, more glitzy but dull after all he had lived through? He didn't know, and he didn't care. For the first time in over a decade he had someone who cared for him, and he knew Kakashi would help him.
He had to wait far too long for Kakashi, and when he came into the room he found Sasuke more than ready to leave.
"I don't know how these peasants stand it," he said. "I can't wait to get out of here."
Kakashi kicked off his shoes and lay on the bed, fully dressed, vest and all. "I'm not going anywhere for awhile. Sakura did what she could for my back, but I need to lie down until the pain goes away."
"I can get you a pain pill," Sasuke said.
Kakashi studied Sasuke for a few strained moments. "I don't think so," he said. "I don't know why, but it seems like a bad idea." He frowned. "Like a half-memory that I can't quite grasp."
Sasuke expressed his frustration, but Kakashi didn't care. "I just traveled a lot more than I should have in my condition. You'll just have to wait."
The next day Kakashi winced when he woke, putting a hand on his back when he sat up, but he let Sasuke talk him into leaving for Konoha.
The ride back was quiet and strained, and Sasuke wondered which of the many things that could cause tension between him and Kakashi was bothering his Sensei this time. There were so many reasons he could think of. Whenever he tried to make conversation Kakashi answered him tiredly, almost mostly in monosyllables, and Sasuke thought he'd never seen him so morose.
He's probably still in pain, he thought. I'd better look after him, or we'll never get home.
As they neared the border of Fire Country the land became more hilly, and they could see the mountains on the horizon. "It's good to see this place peacefully," Sasuke said.
Sasuke cast the henge as they reached the border. He appeared to be 16, with long black hair tied back in a pony tail, blue eyes, and a much broader chin than was natural for him. The cheekbones were higher, and the general effect was that of a handsome country boy with northern features.
"You look like you're from Rain Country," Kakashi said, "but why so young? You're limiting yourself."
"I wanted to look young enough to be your student. I'm sure Sakura-sama will want you to keep an eye on me, and besides, I want to spar with you. We've never sparred, only fought. I want to get to know you again."
"If I'm supposed to teach you we'll be spending a lot of time together," Kakashi said. "Don't get the wrong idea. I'm doing this for Konoha."
Sasuke looked at the changing landscape with interest. "It looks so different than when I was a kid."
"When you aren't on a mission or in a way the countryside can be seen for more than strategic reasons," Kakashi said.
The houses became nicer, and the road became wider and paved with better stone as they approached Konoha. The road was cluttered with traffic, and the third time that the wagon stopped because of some unknown obstacle ahead, Kakashi climbed into the back of the wagon among the supplies. He shoved them out of the way and lay on the bare wooden floor.
"You drive for awhile. I'm going to rest my back."
Sasuke took the reins of the two pie-bald mares that pulled the open wagon and watched everything around him.
These people and their relatives killed my clan by forcing them into the position they were in, he thought. They would probably be glad to see me die.
He gawked as he drove through town, and he went to a stable he remembered. It was still there. He stopped and woke Kakashi. "Lazy Sensei," he said. "Can you walk, or do we need to get some help somehow?"
"It's better now," Kakashi said. "Sakura-sama said it might hurt for a day or so, but that when I got back she could heal it permanently."
They walked to the Hokage Tower, and Kakashi kept looking at Sasuke, seeking in vain for emotion on his face. Sasuke was intently looking at everything around him, but his face was calm.
Kakashi stopped outside the Tower. "Sakura-sama was angry about this, but that's to be expected," he said. "Whatever you do show her respect or you'll die."
Sasuke had barely paid attention to Kakashi after they grew closer to his home town, opting to instead look at all the surrounding area and trying to compare it with distant memories.
"I hope you know what you want to say to her," Kakashi said. "This is more important than you realize."
"I know how to talk to women” Sasuke said. "Don't worry about me."
Kakashi winced. "That's a bad attitude to take in with you. It could cost you your life. You might as well know that you'll be closely monitored."
"I thought as much. I expect to be back on top within a year. I'm too valuable to keep chained to the village."
"Don't overestimate your importance. It's your genetics she wants, not you."
"I'll prove to be valuable," Sasuke said. "I'll even let you train my children someday. I don't believe you when you say you won't make them pleasure you, but I'm sure you'll be gentle with them."
"That's sick. I liked you better when you were more humble," Kakashi said. "What happened to that?"
"I know my place," Sasuke said, "and I'm content to wait until I've proven myself, but you and I both know it's going to happen."
"I don't know that," Kakashi said. "If you want to be a Konoha ninja it will be a long time until you "rise" at all, if that ever happens."
"We'll see," Sasuke said.
He didn't notice the long, measuring look Kakashi gave him. He was too busy admiring the building. It looked much the same as it had on the few occasions he'd visited as a child to get missions with Team 7, with the polished mahogany furniture and grand, high lobby. It was richly furnished with red tapestries and cushions.
"I guess we can't put this off any longer," Kakashi said.
Sakura had changed the Hokage's office, giving it a subtler, more feminine look without being overpowering. She had removed some of Tsunade's trophies, keeping the ones that had meaning to her, and she had covered the walls with symbols and trophies from her own victories, which were numerous. A chakra infused spear was her latest acquisition, and Shizune was hanging it on the wall opposite Sakura's desk when Kakashi and Sasuke arrived. It went well with the cracked Lion Mask, which she had removed from its owner after smashing his face. It had earned her the name Lion Fist, one that Kakashi thought fit her. She had also hung up a few inspirational quotes, and a "hang in there" poster with a kitten. Kakashi hated that poster.
He missed Sandaime's office, with the rich smell of pipe smoke and the masculine feel of the dark wood and odd simple machinery that he liked to toy with when he was bored, but he accepted Sakura's dominance of the space as he did most things he didn't particularly care for - with adaptability and regret.
When they entered the Hokage's presence she stood behind her desk, the same oak desk that had been there since the first Hokage, admiring Shizune's work with a critical eye. She dismissed Shizune when they arrived, and her eyes were cold and harsh. Kakashi had seen that look before, and he didn't think it boded well for Sasuke.
"You look so different!" Sasuke blurted. She wore a high-quality, formal, light grey suit, and she had died her hair platinum blonde. She hadn't chosen a youth jutsu like Tsunade, but it was obvious that she'd had cosmetic surgery on her cheeks, nose, and somehow even her forehead, turning her into a true beauty. In truth, even though her beauty was renowned in Konoha, Kakashi thought the effect somewhat generic, and he missed the awkward little girl with the big forehead.
"Is that how you generally greet your superiors, Sasuke?" Sakura asked.
Kakashi poked Sasuke hard in the back. "Idiot!" he hissed. "What did I tell you not five minutes ago?"
"What did you tell him?" she asked.
"To show some respect."
Sasuke bowed - barely. "I forgot my manners, Sakura-sama. It's good to see you again. I was shocked at how much you've changed."
"You will address me as Hokage-sama, if I wish to be addressed at all. It is not good to see you, and familiarity will not be tolerated."
He opened his mouth to speak, but Sakura waved a hand to stop him. The gesture was arrogant, and Kakashi suspected, practiced.
"I will tell you when you can address me. I'm not happy with Kakashi for bringing you here."
She looked toward Kakashi, and despite her harsh words a small smile played on her lips. "Always thinking of the good of the village, aren't you?"
Her fierce expression returned. "But you've put me in a place where for the good of Konoha I need to accept this trash into our home."
"Forgive me, Hokage-sama," Kakashi said. "As you said, I was only thinking of the village's needs."
"Kakashi, please call me Sakura-sama," she said. "So much formality from you is odd."
"I see you chose a young body for your henge," she said to Sasuke. "That's good, because I want you to live with Kakashi as his student."
Sasuke smiled broadly at that, but Kakashi's shoulders slumped. "Is that necessary?"
"It's the only way I will accept this idea. And if you really want to start over again, Sasuke, I suggest you listen to his teachings this time. I need ninjas who can work together flawlessly, not lone wolves. Do you understand?"
Kakashi thought Sasuke waited a bit too long to answer than was wise, and that he shouldn't have locked eyes with her. "Yes, Hokage-sama."
"Good. Now wait outside while Kakashi and I discuss your future, and close the door on your way out."
She scowled at his retreating back until he closed the door. "First things first," she said. "I can tell you're in pain. I can treat your back here so you don't have to escape through hospital windows."
"Stand straight," she said. He knew her chakra, and he felt a sharp jolt of pain, and then a soothing sensation. "That should take care of it," she said. "I can even clear you for strenuous duty in a day or two. Your wild medic did a good job. You might still have some problems though. Talk to me if you do."
"Now about Sasuke, you really put me in a bind," Sakura said.
"That was never my intention, Sakura-sama."
"We're alone. You can drop the "sama". I miss the days when we were less formal."
"I miss a lot of things," Kakashi said. "That among them."
"He brings back too many ugly memories," Sakura said. "I don't want to deal with him unless absolutely necessary. And for gods' sake keep him away from Naruto!"
"Naruto does tend to be observant at the most inconvenient times."
Sakura came around her desk and sat on it, revealing trim, well muscled legs and the same high heels that her own master had preferred. The exact same heels, actually. Tsunade had willed them to her as a sort of symbol.
"Do you think you can carry out this assignment?" Sakura asked. "If it's beyond you I can find another way."
"I am the only one that he trusts in the village. I can judge him best. I'll determine if we can trust him."
"And if not?"
"I will do what is necessary." Kakashi said.
"I hope you will. You'd better go look after your pet project. If you teach him well enough he might even make a good teacher someday."
"No!" Kakashi said. "Forgive the outburst, but he should never be a teacher."
"I didn't expect to hear that," Sakura said.
"I found out that Orochimaru abused him severely, and until I told him otherwise he thought that was a natural student/teacher relationship. He assumed that I abused you and Naruto. I wouldn't want any children to study under him."
"When you say abused, what do you mean?"
"Molested, raped. Possibly tortured."
"And he thinks that's the natural order of things? Did you bring me a pedophile?"
"He hasn't said anything like that. It isn't his fault that he was molested."
"No," Sakura said, "but it's our fault if he molests children now that we know. How can you think he can be a ninja here?"
"I don't know that he can," Kakashi said. "If he can give us children with the Sharingan that's enough."
"How stable do you think he is?" she asked.
Kakashi remembered Sasuke using his body against his will and shuddered. "Not very. I feel bad for him, but if it wasn't in the village's best interests I wouldn't have even considered it. He has some severe boundary issues."
"How severe?"
"Very," he said. Somehow when he was focused on his self-appointed mission the rape had taken backseat to his duty, but not that his duty was fulfilled it wasn't something he wanted to think about. He pushed it far into the back of his mind with all the other clutter from bad missions, his suicidal father, and all the other wreckage of his life.
"Do what you need to," Sakura said, "but I would like it if you came here for social reasons occasionally. I don't have many people that I dare relax around."
When he left she buzzed Shizune, who had stayed on as her secretary. It was a step down from her relationship with Tsunade, but she had accepted the position gracefully.
"Summon Morino Ibiki. I have some work that requires the Chief Investigator."
