021. Searching
Hinata woke up when she realized that the warm body that had been lying next to her was gone. With a light moan, she blinked and sat up, being conscious enough to keep her sheet covering her bare body. She turned towards the balcony to see Sakura standing there, wrapped in a robe and silently staring out at the ocean.
“Did I wake you?”
“Only a little,” Hinata said with a tentative smile. “Sorry, it's just...I've gotten so used to sleeping with...” You. ”I've gotten so used to not sleeping by myself,” she decided to say, even as her cheeks warmed.
“Don't apologize. I should be the one doing that.” Sakura still didn't turn around, even as she trailed off, “For many reasons...”
Blinking at the tone, Hinata reached for her long t-shirt and pulled it on. Then she got up from the bed and went to stand beside Sakura, folding her arms on the railing.
With soft eyes, she asked, “Is there something wrong?”
“Just thinking.”
“...About what?”
“...Whether or not this is all our lives will ever be, a series of fleeting moments, in a dead end village.” Sakura clenched her hands around the railing. “If maybe...maybe Sasuke was right all along.”
That made Hinata's heart jump. Sasuke hadn't been seen around the village since the end of the War, since he'd fought with Naruto for the last time. It had been presumed that he'd try to redeem himself, but the idea of him still left Hinata shaken. After all, he was the one to proclaim that the time of the Leaf Village was coming to an end, that he would burn it to ash and revive it into something greater—even if he had to kill Naruto to do it.
Not exactly a pleasant image.
“S-Sakura...what do you mean?”
“I mean just...is there even a point in fighting for this village?” Sakura said, her eyes storming like the sea. “If there will always be someone who wants to destroy it?”
022. Hands of Fate
Nami recognized her the minute she saw Hinata crouching in a spot across the room, her white eyes blazing and her body tensing to prepare for a fight against a Marine, and she nearly screamed. Damn it, I spoke too soon!
“U-Usopp,” she whispered as she tapped his shoulder. “I-I don't want you to panic, but—”
“HOLY SHIT, is that—!” Nami slapped her hands to Usopp's mouth and near tackled him to the floor, out of Hinata's sight.
“Shut up, you idiot, you want her to see us?!”
“Sorry, sorry,” Usopp whispered back, peeking out from behind the upturned table again. He blinked at Hinata and hummed. “Though, she's a lot smaller than the Wanted posters said...”
“Who cares?” Nami hissed. “I don't want to risk her seeing us—”
“It's a little late for that,” a soft voice spoke from behind them.
Nami and Usopp screamed and whipped around to see a bemused Hinata—who was polite enough to greet them with a wave.
“B-but I just saw—” Usopp looked back at where he saw Hinata, only to see a puff of smoke and a log left behind.
“H-how did you...?” Nami swallowed.
Hinata stared at them as they stammered in their questions, her right eyebrow rising as her expression went flat.
“No offense, but you Straw Hats are as subtle as a brick to the face,” she answered. “But, if you want to get out of here safely like I do, I can help you. You just have to follow my lead.”
Nami and Usopp stared down at Hinata for a moment, a little bemused that she was...not the murderous monster the World Government said she was? I mean, okay, that's not a complete shock, but...
“What do you think?”
“Well, she doesn't seem so bad,” Usopp whispered under his breath. “And it will only be one time...”
“Yeah, but should we take the chance...?”
Meanwhile, in Hinata's head:
Motherfucker, why do I keep running into this motherfucking crew of motherfucking pirates? I can't go to an island without hearing about them, or running into one of them, or, or, or...UGH. Hinata thought as she felt an eyebrow twitch, feeling absolutely done with this shit show of a day. Seriously, what is even my life anymore? And why are they in it?!
023. Irresistible
“It must be so hard for you two.”
Sakura and Hinata looked up from their conversation to see a beautiful young woman they recognized as being Naruto's latest hookup. Her lips were pursed into a pout and her eyes were soft with sympathy.
“W-what...” Hinata started.
“Are you talking about?” Sakura finished with a frown and quirked eyebrow.
“Well...you two are his mains right? He told me last night when we,” she flushed for a moment, trailing off. Then she looked back at them, looking suddenly guilty. “I'm really sorry! I realize how hard it must be to love him and know...well. That he's so irresistible.”
Hinata couldn't help the giggle-snort that bubbled from her, but luckily she hid it behind a hand and turned around before the poor girl noticed. Meanwhile, Sakura narrowed her green eyes, her right eyebrow twitching.
“Are you fucking kidding me—? Is that seriously what you think?!”
“Well,” the girl said, blinking with confusion. “Why else are you two always hanging around each other?”
Hinata blushed brightly, her gaze gravitating to Sakura, who merely blinked before smirking. She shifted her cool green eyes to Hinata and reached out to curl a finger in her long, dark hair.
“Why indeed,” she couldn't help but purr in a way that made Hinata burn.
024. Easy
The Gentle Fist was never meant to be used in such a horrible way. At worst, it was meant to cause organ failure, even paralysis. It was never meant to pierce a chest cavity and lead to one crushing organs. The very idea was monstrous, barbaric. Everything the poised, graceful Hyuga clan would be against.
Even so, when facing a man who had made life for dozens of slaves absolute hell and was going to do the same for her, Hinata didn't let herself think twice before summoning up her chakra into her fingers and moving forward—
025. Breathing
Nico Robin blinked down at Hinata, studying her with blue eyes that felt too piercing.
“How do you do it?”
“W-what?” Hinata replied intelligently.
“What you did on the water, that...dance?” Robin clarified, sounding unsure despite her even tone. “How are you able to do that? Are all ninjas capable of it?”
Well, damn. How was she supposed to explain that? Hinata frowned and chewed on her lip. How do you explain the basics of chakra use, of jutsu, to someone who likely can't use it? (At least not through traditional means...there is still Haki, after all.) You might as well explain the concept of breathing.
Still, might as well give it a shot. Can't be any different than teaching her Genin back home, right?
“Okay, so the first thing I do is this...”
026. Stumble
When Hinata pushed her boat offshore for the first time, since escaping from the Marines and Celestial Dragons, she couldn't stop her legs from toppling onto each other, from falling.
After staring dully for a moment or so, the sand pillowing her cheek as she lay on her side, Hinata glared ahead and pushed herself up to stand. Then she directed her glare back at her boat and approached it once more, eager to leave that damned island.
She wasn't built for fighting like this, for being a criminal on the run from different sides of the globe. She wasn't built to sail these terrible seas. She wasn't built to battle pirates or Devil Fruit Users; she barely stood on her own against enemy ninjas. But damn it, she was going to try.
027. Fighting
The second time Hinata got into a brawl with Zoro, months after first running into him, it was her who went up to him first. Not because she was bitter over him beating her last time—on the contrary, really—but because she just wanted to feel something. Even if it ended up killing her.
“...I think you've had enough,” Zoro said, his voice softer than she'd ever thought possible. His dark gaze flashed with something as he looked down at her—not pity, but it was enough for him to put his swords away.
Hinata glared up at him, even as she was crouching and trying to get her breath back. She spat out the excess blood from her mouth, coughed, and shakily stood up to get into her stance.
“Don't tell me when I've had enough,” she snarled. “You have no right to that.”
Zoro stared at her, and then sighed as he plopped down onto the ground, crossing his arms over his chest and staring ahead, away from her.
“If you want to try hitting me, fine. If you want to attempt to kill yourself by challenging the biggest bruiser in town, that's fine too. Just know that it won't get rid of whatever pain is inside you.”
Hinata nearly laughed. “Oh, oh, really? Then tell me, Swordsman-san, what will?!”
He shrugged. “Talking? Preferably over sake? I've got a bottle right here, actually,” he casually added as he pulled a medium bottle out from his pants pocket.
Hinata stared at him with narrow eyes, her Byakugan activated and her fighting stance intact. She watched him as he opened the bottle and took a sip, and she felt herself falter.
“W-why?” She tried to understand. “Aren't we technically enemies—Swordsman and Shinobi?”
“...Eh.” Zoro shrugged. “I trust Shinobi as far as I can throw them, but that's more on principle than on any personal biases. But no, I don't consider you an enemy.”
Hinata stared at him, her lips trembling just a little. This bastard.
“Th-then, why...?”
Zoro finally looked at her. He took in her rather gaunt face, her mussed up hair, and the emotions that stormed in her white eyes. He took all that in and only blinked twice.
“Does it matter?” He lifted the bottle with a scowl that had no bite. “Just sit down and drink, you idiot.”
028. Kindness
“Robin-san?”
Robin glanced from the book she was reading, to lock eyes with Hinata, who had laced her fingers on the table they were sitting at. “Yes?”
“Can you explain why your crew...why the Straw Hats...?”
“Yes...?” She coaxed with a hidden smile.
“Why are you all so nice?” Hinata finally spat out, her cheeks flushed and her eyes wide.
“Oh. You think we're nice?” The older woman smiled wider, her blue eyes holding laughter. “Such a kind thing to say.”
Hinata pouted. “Robin-san, you know what I mean.”
But Robin just kept smiling, even as she sipped her coffee.
029. Involved
Hinata wanted to give into her instinct to run, to hide away from this fight. There was no point in her getting involved with the Straw Hats. They were nothing to her.
But once again, they had run into each other on an island, and once again, she found herself entangled in their conflicts. And while it would have been easy to walk away months ago, they weren't just strangers that she coincidentally ran into anymore. By now, Hinata knew a good portion of them.
And so, when she saw Franky and Usopp start working on a contraption that would no doubt run those Marines through the ringer, Hinata steeled herself and ran over to him.
“Franky-san, Usopp, is there anything I can do to help?”
030. Destiny
“Do you believe in destiny?” Hinata asked Brook, after he stopped playing one of his favorite pieces on the piano. Once again, he'd run patrons out from a club, no doubt because of his appearance. Even so, his music had been as mesmerizing as when Hinata had first heard it at Thriller Bark.
Brook grinned, as best as a skeleton could, and he nodded. “Of course! You think I ran into the Straw Hats, who had met up with Laboon—an old comrade of mine, mind you—due to chance?”
She shrugged, her mouth pursed into a bemused pout.
Brook gave her a look, his gaze intent, even without eyeballs. “Hinata-san, do you think that you keep running into us only because of chance?”
Hinata stared up at him.
