A sneeze to his left caught Shino's attention. As he looked away from the fire, he took a rather distant notice to the kunoichi lying beside him. Burning the cloth did no good to rid the cold shack of the smell of crimson fluid as small puddles of blood still stained the wooden floor. Hearing Hachi sneeze again, the Aburame man pulled the languid woman into his lap with much more effort than he would normally require.
She roused only to have the insect-user shush her and zip his trench coat up that had been cocooned around her. The red beetle embellishments upon the collar glistening in the light of the orange flames. Resting his chin on top of her head, Shino held her close, not noticing how tight his grip on her arm was until she shrugged and whimpered tiredly. He slouched over her, loosening his anger and barely able to sit up, himself. He disappeared again into his own thoughts.
The team had only one delay on their journey to the rendezvous when they crossed paths with Iwa hunter-nin. The masked allies already knew of Hachi and their third-party engagement, so there was no tension and both parties quickly went on their way. The rendezvous point was a vacant farmhouse forty kilometers outside of the city where Tekkō was last seen and a raven-haired woman greeted their arrival. From what Hachi had elaborated earlier, the older woman was the current bartender for their target's favorite watering hole and an old informant for the Konoha ANBU.
Walking inside, their contact gave Shino a very obvious once-over and seemed to sneer at his appearance. Shino himself noticed a stark change in Hachi's demeanor: Along with wearing some flattering makeup, her normal gait had turned into a saunter with a subtle swing in her hips. Her inquisitive blue eyes had steeled. It was quite clear to the Aburame man that the woman he knew the night before was, for now, a completely different person. It was all business from here on out.
As soon as they four sat down at the dining table, Hachi passed a thick stack of ryō and a carton of top dollar tobacco to the dark-haired women. "How've you been, Miko-chan?" the brunette winked playfully.
"Quite well, indeed. Hōki still looking fine as ever?" she laughed and rolled a paper full of the new tobacco.
Hachi let no sadness betray her face as she answered. "I'm afraid not. KIA." she abbreviated any lengthy explanation.
Miko lit her cigarette in surprise and shook her head. "Aw sweetie, I'm sorry. He was a good kid."
Eiji piped up, "Is Tekkō still in town?"
The older woman nodded and took a drag off her cigarette, fanning the smoke away before starting. "He's staying at a suite in the bath house's resort. Pretty quiet around that area. No routine when he comes by the bar, but when he does want to get shit-faced, it's usually after eleven o' clock." she turned her dark-brown eyes to Hachi. "I've got you down for my shifts; he likes Suntory Yamazaki best. Don't serve him anything less than top shelf and when you seat customers, always save him a spot by the wall. If he likes you, he'll wanna move fast and not work too hard; so be easy and clueless."
Hachi's eyebrows twitched with some attitude as she appeared unimpressed "Tch. Just when I thought this son of bitch might be a challenge."
Miko let out a quick chuckle. Shino watched the kunoichi in action and side glanced to Miko. The smoker had her arms crossed...after a drag she licked at her lipstick and pursed her mouth tight. The colony raised him the red flag that he already saw. 'She's not telling us everything...' he assessed. Hachi apparently summed it up the same and he and Eiji watched their captain slide their refunded ryō across the table. Her hand did not lift from the cash though.
Miko almost loosened her demeanor on cue. Glancing out of the window, the older woman took a deep inhale of smoke and slackened her lips. "You need to watch out for that chakra-stealing thing of his, sometimes he uses it on the girls just enough to get what he wants. I did find out somethin' that'll help you though: it's a one-time move."
Reaching for the tender, Miko's advance was not rewarded as Hachi's hand anchored the ryō still with chakra. Eiji leaned in for the news and the colony held a mutual ill-at-ease feeling with Shino as he listened, but none heard the commotion beneath his skin. Only so briefly, blue and brown irises had a stare-down as Miko's fingers retreated an inch from her pending compensation.
Showing no weakness to the elder woman, Hachi's smile turned rather wicked. "You have our undivided attention." the kunoichi encouraged oh so sweetly.
"He can only use it once a day on one person, because if he steals too much, he can't handle it. He got too plastered to think straight one night and I saw him use that jutsu on a couple of cats at once. Both guys he touched died, but it nearly killed him too. Blood dripping out all his holes and he got all red-faced and bloated. It was a fucking mess, I tell ya. Some drunk nin they just hired told me that's what happens when you pump too much chakra into one body." Miko exhaled smoke and shook her head in with the overwhelming memory.
"He is correct. They are very few capable enough to control enormous levels of chakra." Shino added his liltless conjecture while Hachi finally relinquished the money, satisfied with watch she had heard.
It didn't take Miko long to pocket the cash and deviate toward Shino, who sat with great poise beside her. "Is your...friend, here, gonna make a problem for me?"
"Shino can blend in. Don't you worry your pretty head." Eiji waved off the women's criticism.
Miko quirked an eyebrow, unconvinced. "Is that so?"
The Aburame suddenly leaned back with all the grace of a lazy cat and turned to address the older women beside him, "Don't get so hung-up on my looks, beautiful. I don't bite." he bellowed out in a rather suave tone.
Miko giggled and patted Shino's cheek as Eiji sat with arms crossed, eyebrows raised in disbelief. While Miko teased back at the insect-user, Shino could hear Hachi kick the blonde man underneath the table while her blue eyes smirked at Shino's seamless transition into performance. Eiji's glare shot Hachi's way then composed before Miko noticed him.
The informant smiled, "Get him out of that get-up and he's got my vote." she nudged Shino playfully with her elbow. "I bet you're hiding some handsome underneath all that!"
Shino merely held his index finger to his lips in a shushing motion and the two women began jesting back and forth between more information-sharing.
*
No sooner than Miko's departure was Shino's head planted firmly against the low table in self-reproach. 'I am never using Kiba's pick-up lines again.' he thought to himself. Eiji choked back some laughter while Hachi patted the cringing Aburame on the back and pulled out a fan, trying to air-out the room.
"Hey, champ! You did great, she likes you!" Hachi reassured humorously.
"All that smoke..." Shino said in a rather nauseated tone. He swore if one kikaichū treaded on his stomach right now, he might lurch.
Hachi sighed, "I know, she always stinks like a sweaty ashtray."
Eiji's restraint loosened his snickering into an all out cackling fit.
Hachi gave his back one last pat, "No worries, you won't have to put-on like that while we're working. Just dress like a civilian and do your thing." she smiled.
Shino lifted his head and watched the kunoichi meander through the room in her normal manner.
"Can it, already!" she got feisty and slapped the fan over Eiji's laughing head.
As the evening dragged on, the men of the team went around shutting the curtains and securing the rendezvous point that they designated their safe house for the remainder of the mission. Hachi set about heating-up their rations and as the three sat down to some rather unappealing curry and rice MREs, she began marking camera points on blueprints of the bar and bath house. Eiji wolfed down his meal and hurried to dress in his yukata before heading out to comb the city. Hachi and Shino took advantage of the cold shower in turns.
The Aburame man didn't fail to notice that in his peripheral exit of the bathroom, his captain's eyes were following him. As he stood with hands in his backpack, he hadn't yet zipped his coat all the way up, revealing a slight sculpting of his muscles under a fishnet shirt, with his wet tresses of hair down to his jawline; from the safety behind his glasses, he stared at her briefly parting lips before she curbed her reaction and silently made for the bathroom. Shino kept his ears tuned to the faint noises of the shower inside and the branches scratching the windows outside. He gave way to no satisfaction in his features, but his telepathic link left no mental secrets from his ward...and they expressed their primal relishing in his thoughts.
With no motion to hush them this time as he concluded no more experimentation was needed; Hachi's behavior, especially in these latest months, had given him plenty of sufficient hints...but would it be worth his effort though? Quickly scrubbing his hair dry with a towel and zipping-up his trench coat, he sat down by the fireplace and procured a small metal box from his pack. It opened to reveal tiny cameras, no bigger than a match-head. Delicately grasping one with a pair of tweezers, he glued the device to a corner of his spare sunglasses, much like his fathers. Fixated on his work and decisions, Shino almost missed the soft footsteps headed his way.
"So these are the cameras?" Hachi knelt down beside her teammate, looking rather awed. "They're so tiny..."
Shino nodded. "They're our newest prototype...because they needed to be specially fitted for the kikaichū thorax." he explained as he shifted his sitting position to face the kunoichi. "Your hand, please." he requested flatly.
Giving him a quizzical look, she obeyed, holding out her hand. Gingerly, Shino grasped her palm and lifted it to meet his line of sight, straightening her much smaller fingers into a flat surface with his own as he went.
"Ahhh," Hachi laughed quietly, "am I compensating for the lack of tall furniture?"
"If you don't mind." he replied, passing a flashlight to her free hand.
She simply shook her head in reply and shined the light over the top of her open palm. Hachi watched a pore dilate on the insect master's face as nineteen beetles crawled out from underneath his skin. The insects took short flight to land on her palm; one crawling into the best lit area at its host's silent behest.
"Is it painful...when they're inside you?" she quietly conversed.
Dabbing a needlepoint of glue onto the beetle's thorax, Shino replied while attaching the camera. "Not inside, because they navigate to avoid irritating major sensory ganglia of their host. Entrance and exit merely feels like a senbon puncture."
Watching the next beetle line up, Hachi thought aloud further. "So that's for the host...how would it feel to someone they don't contract?"
Shino paused only briefly, "I imagine the pain can be rather extreme. Unless commanded otherwise by the host, the kikaichū pay no regard to the comfort of other chakra sources they feed on." he explained, equipping another beetle.
She gulped noticeably as she kept her palm steady.
"They won't be able to fly..." she commented, noting how one camera covered the entire abdomen of the insect.
Shino nodded, working deftly. "I'll pretend to drop a pamphlet outside of the bar an release them in passing. They will burrow their way inside." he assured and pulled his face away from her steady hand. "They need a few minutes to dry."
Hachi turned off the flashlight and stared at the beetles before her eyes. Shino watched her eyes, unmoved; the fireplace distorted their blue hue into a shade of green and her damp hair glistened with a red sheen. She tied it back so often that he had never noticed how long it was, with brunette waves reaching to just below her rib cage. He noticed she was looking past the beetles to his slitted-visor, and could tell she was pondering on where his sight lay. Reciprocating the stare for a few seconds, he noticed a kikaichū exploring a scar on her wrist and then crawling up her sleeve.
Following the beetle, Shino's hand quietly lowered Hachi's wrist and worked-up the cuff of her jōnin shirt. A faint line of dotted scars decorated the underside of her forearm as the male kikaichū weaved around them. "Cigarette burns...you been interrogated before?" he observed, running his thumb over one of the raised dots.
Hachi gave a halfhearted laugh and weak nod. "Occupational hazard...their game was pretty weak, though."
Shino made no comment and retrieved a chakra-feeding vile from his pocket, herding the equipped kikaichū inside. Once the insects were stored away, he released Hachi's arm an raised himself from the floor; offering her a hand as he stood. Smiling in earnest, Hachi accepted the help and the Aburame clansmen lifted her by her wrist.
"I'll take first watch." the kunoichi turned to leave, breaking the contact.
Donning her sandals and cloak, the seductress departed to clear the area, leaving her teammate inside. Shino just stood there. He absently rubbed the slight tingle of touching off of his fingers and palm. He wasn't particularly sure if he wanted to proceed any further. Attraction was the Tamechia women's greatest skillset, she could just be toying with him...but she seems rather sincere...and she hid many things from him...then again, what he found her hiding was no real obligation of his to know.
He did still want to know, though. If only courtship between humans were as simple as it was with his insects; his symbionts knew no guile in such straightforward affairs. Sighing to himself, Shino quieted his indecision, retiring to the small bedroom and indulged in a futon mattress for the night.
*
The team had completely split-up by dawn. Gensei never showed so Eiji set-up his alternative cover as a tea merchant scheduled to meet with Shino over the week. The kikaichū host simply watched Hachi transfer her belongings and backpack to a more cumbersome suitcase Miko left upon request. She had traded out her jōnin uniform for a flirtatious skirt, pink tank top, and baggy knit cardigan. Donning a scarf and boots before she left to go rent a room in the city, Shino placed his hand on Hachi's shoulder, planting a wired kikaichū into her untied hair.
In her wake, the insect-user loosed his hair and unmasked his eyes; leisurely eating instant miso and an apple for breakfast to stagger their times of arrival. As the sun settled to noon and he finished his kata indoors, Shino unpacked the civilian clothes he'd purchased for the mission. He fitted his black slacks with a belt and tucked in his gray dress shirt. After straightening his dark-blue tie, he grabbed his sunglasses and black suit jacket. Just for a moment he sighed at the loafers sitting by the doorway; he was going to regret not breaking in the shoes beforehand as he slipped his sock-clad feet into the tight leather.
Securing the safe house, he leaped for the sturdiest branch and made for the nearest train station.
*
The first three days sailed by with no sign of Tekkō at the bar. Shino had been renting the suite beside the missing-nin in the bath house; thus far, the kikaichū successfully infiltrated the bar and the target's room, so Shino was the only one able to keep tabs on him. They bade their time as planned though: Hachi had easily kept pace with the night shift and was making a name for herself by entertaining the yakuza with omakase tastings. Eiji continued sporting his finest yukatas and met Shino at strategic venues he claimed 'created proper ambiance for each tea-tasting.' In the meantime, the kikaichū gathered the proof of Iwagakure's innocence, with Shino remotely controlling the cameras from his laptop and directing the beetles telepathically.
He spent his free time deliberating what to do about the kunoichi in charge of this mission. It was obvious she was showing signs of attraction; he couldn't see much for her to gain from playing him, unless she was trying to get in better with Naruto. The Aburame doubted it though...if she was power-hungry, then she made a poor choice in stepping down the affluent ladder to a teaching career. She wouldn't find much status or money to be had in wiling him either. Then there was Petenshi Eiji...Shino's bile churned at the conflict there.
He deemed it highly improbable that anything with Hachi could be pursued without catching some pissing-contest from the blonde chūnin. What to make of him though...it just didn't add up; if Eiji hated her so much for being a seductress, then why bother with possessiveness over the woman? The colony had plenty of mouth to dish on the subject, but the kikaichū host grew very wary of how this 'double-edged sword' situation could make things escalate if either Hachi or himself took initiative. Sighing loudly, Shino took a break from his laptop and stretched out on the hotel bed, giving great thanks that as much of an ass as Kiba could be, he and Hinata treated Shino very well as a teammate and friend.

Finally, on their fourth night undercover, Shino watched as another shinobi convinced Tekkō to stop by the upscale bar and 'check out the hot barkeep.' The beetle planted on Hachi flitted behind her neck with the signal and retreated into her braided hair. She readied herself and cheered on the gangsters she served as they played drinking games. Shino made his way into town, taking up post in a noodle stand near the high-class bar. Hachi was fully aware that Tekkō silently traipsed into the establishment, but turned with surprise to greet him.
"Oi." The older nin bellowed in greeting as he stood with steely-eyes and unruly peppered-black hair, nary concerned with downplaying his shinobi attire.
Hachi ushered him to his saved seat by the wall and strutted over in her red cheongsam, smiling with cherried lips as she leaned over the bar. "What can I start you off with?" she chirped.
"The guys won't shut-up about your four tastes." His hardened, gray eyes locked her sights. "Omakase, new girl." he slapped a bandaged hand on the bartop as the manager came over to greet him.
"Yes sir." the bartender winked as she went to pull from the top shelf, making sure the Yamazaki single malt was part of the selection.
Shino sent a female kikaichū in to fly status reports back and forth from the wired males inside. He slowly ate his soba bowl and kept tabs on Hachi's progress. Snow began to fall when Eiji took a seat next to his Aburame client and placed an order. The to men discussed their phony families and business dealings while Shino coded Hachi's status as his "sister's recent accomplishments with her new employer." Inwardly, Shino was growing very bristled at the reports he was receiving from inside.
Hachi was quickly catching the shinobi's fixated attention. At one point, the well-muscled man reached over the bar and tugged at the end of the woman's braid playfully. The action merely elicited a giggle from the blue-eyed barkeep as she hurried about the Friday night rush, a slew of clumsy anecdotes and jokes ready for every customer. Discussing the twelfth drink Tekkō was hankering for, Hachi had to keep the pleasantries up as the imposing man reaching again over the bar.
This time he drunkenly swung an arm over her shoulder and whispered in her ear, "Miko got you trained up good. You want me to make you cum all night t'night, don't ya pretty girl?"
Hachi simply gave a giggling blush and waved him off as she made his next drink. His behavior was becoming deplorable to the other customers, but neither they, nor the staff made any move to verse him in etiquette and Hachi lost none of her bartending appeal when she politely egged-on his flirting. The chūnin men outside had eaten and even pushed to order dessert as they waited; they'd worn-out their time in the noodle stand and Eiji cordially beckoned Shino into a hole-in-the-wall bar closer to the upscale one Hachi was tending. The insect-wielder didn't drink, but reluctantly gave in and ordered what he assumed, by its pale color, was a weak beer and sipped it; trying to pace himself with the time before last call.
By the time customers started filing out, Shino had already been obligated to finish-up his third beer, and he wasn't feeling coordinated. 'This is bad...' he thought, slouching back in his barstool. Eiji nudged the signal against Shino's hand. Not thinking, the insect-user started to turn his head to find Tekkō's position...before he could blow his cover though, Eiji patted his shoulder drunkenly congratulating him on his purchases.
The brown-eyed man leaned in and quickly whispered, "Get it together, shithead. Look with your bugs, not your eyes."
Shino nodded and focused himself. He summoned back the female kikaichū and listened as she reported their target's position: he was waiting by the employee exit, loosening the bandages on his hands. Shino immediately shook his head to sober-up as he realized what may soon happen.
"Gonna go find a bathroom." The Aburame man informed his teammate as he staggered off, leaving Eiji in a silent fit.
The female rounded back again, reporting that Hachi was already walking his way with Tekkō alongside. Without balance, Shino dove into an alley and pretended to pee.
"Your eyes remind me of..." Tekkō paused. "The shadow on a storm cloud."
Shino scoffed aloud at the missing-nin's flattery, listening for their approach. Eiji swaggered out of the bar, not getting any visual on the tipsy insect-user. As Hachi admired the poetic compliment, Tekkō stumbled his pace purposely behind her and made three hand seals as the bandages fell away. Just as Hachi passed the ally, Shino stumbled out in between the kunoichi and the missing-nin. Tekkō's hand pushed the Aburame man out of the way and up against the wall. Shino began to seize as he felt a vacuum suck the chakra from his body.
"Stay out of my way, punk!" Tekkō warned angrily as he let Shino fall to the ground unconscious.
"W-what's with that guy, is he okay?" Hachi asked as dumbly as she could, though inside she panicked, knowing full-well that the plan had gone terribly wrong.
"Just a drunk. Let's go." Tekkō barked as he irritably began wrapping up his palms.
Hachi feigned a confused look and giggled as Tekkō got her by the waist and led her through town. Inwardly she prayed that her other teammate would quickly get Shino out of there. She had to expedite everything from here on. Eiji hopped off the roof and tried to rouse the Aburame man. Shino barely woke but didn't respond to his teammate's questions.
The blonde tried not to panic. "You goddamn idiot! I should just leave you here!" he quietly seethed as he paused over Shino's body. Eiji then ruffled his hair in frustration and slung the limp kikaichū master over his shoulder. He hauled his dark-haired teammate quietly back to the safe house.
