Chapter 3. Last Friday Night
She raised her hand to wipe the sleep from her eyes, aware of the warm weight resting across her abdomen, and the soft skin beneath her head. Her eyes became focused as she took in the sight before her, it was not often that she woke before the man next to her and she loved it when she did. He looked so peaceful in sleep, relaxed, she reached out to caress his cheek, he shifted slightly unconsciously seeking out her touch. She carefully extracted herself from his arms intent on getting breakfast started and a pot of coffee brewing, she would let him sleep.
Down stairs she discovered she was the only one awake in the house, one look at the clock told her why, it was barely seven. She started the coffee and got to work on making omelets, pulling a brick of cheese out of the fridge and some pork out of the freezer. She had barely finished the first one when Itachi and Neji entered the room together. She gave red eyed man a questioning look, wondering where Kira was.
"She's already back at work, she left a couple of hours ago," he answered her unasked question.
"You weren't kidding when you said she allows herself to be consumed by her work, I guess we won't be seeing much of her for the next little while."
"What time did she get back last night?" Neji inquired of him.
"She wandered in around midnight," Itachi replied. He reached for the pot of coffee. "To be honest, I was surprised she didn't just crash there." He added a bit of cream and a modest amount of sugar before taking his first sip. Judging by the level in the pot Hikari was already on her second cup of the day, he doubted he would ever understand the draw of the bitter black liquid she and his brother seemed enjoy.
They heard the front door open and close, all assuming it was Kira they didn't pay much attention, until Sasuke came storming into the room, a scowl deeply imbedded on his face. He didn't spare anyone a look and made a beeline for the coffee maker grumbling to himself. Hikari gave him a sympathetic looked and placed an empty mug in front of him without a word.
Neji opened his mouth to question the younger man as to why he was in their house but Hikari slapped a hand over his mouth and shot him a glare, effectively silencing him. He was always amazed by how well she understood the youngest Uchiha, and would have been jealous of their friendship had he not known how much the former avenger and Konoha's number one loudmouth cared for each other.
Itachi sat back to watch the interaction with mild interest, as Hikari continued cooking as if nothing unusual had occurred, she waited patiently, until his brother finished his first cup of coffee and was pouring himself a second cup before placing a plate of food in front of him. Sasuke picked up a slice of toast and nibbled on it.
"What did he do now?" She asked, no one in the room had to ask for clarification to this statement, there was only one person capable of upsetting the dark haired man so early in the morning.
Sasuke sneered, "he tried to make coffee this morning, it didn't work, I'll need to purchase a new coffee maker."
Neji was unable to stop the snicker from leaving his mouth, and was surprised when not only Sasuke but Hikari shot him twin glares.
"I don't see why you find this humorous, if you ever did something like that... Well let's just say I wouldn't be responsible for my actions," Hikari's eyes slid over to Sasuke, "not that I would blame you, but Naruto isn't dead is he? Because if he was it might reflect badly on us for harbouring a wanted man."
Sasuke allowed himself to snicker at that, "no he's not dead, but he might wish he was once I think up a suitable punishment."
"Oh I could think of a few," Itachi said offhandedly, drawing his brother's attention to him.
Sasuke quirked an eyebrow at him, "do tell."
"You could always set a snare trap that would leave him dangling by one foot, I got Kira with that once when she was younger."
"He would just use a shadow clone to let himself free," Neji pointed out, "why not take him to the lake or the onsen and his clothes could mysteriously go missing."
"Something tells me that wouldn't bother him too much but I think you're on the right track," Hikari said with an evil glint in her eyes.
Sasuke eyed her up, he knew there was a reason he considered her his friend. "What's on your mind Hikari?"
She whispered her plan to the trio of men in her kitchen, "that is pure evil," Neji said with a smirk.
"It's perfect I love it," Sasuke allowed his grin to grow.
"But first you have to lull him into a false sense of security, so he doesn't expect it."
There was a knock on the front door and all conversation stopped, it was most likely Naruto. Neji who was the first to regain his composure went to answer it.
When they came back into the room Naruto's eyes were downcast, "I'm sorry Sasuke, I'll replace your coffee maker."
"Hn." He let the blonde panic for a few minutes making him believe he was still upset about it, he was but he felt a lot better after his little talk with Hikari. "You had better dobe, and today too, I don't want to have to come here every morning to raid Hikari's," he smirked at his boyfriend.
Naruto looked hopeful at that statement, "I'll go get one now."
"I'll come with you, make sure you get a good one." He got up from his chair, "thanks Hikari, I'll see you later."
Two weeks later found Hikari once again sitting in the office of Dr. Kokoro. He sat back in his chair once again waiting for her to speak first, but her body language told him she wasn't anywhere near as tense as she had previously been.
"How long will it be until I will be reinstated for Chuunin missions?" She asked him.
He was a bit taken aback by the question, unlike most patients he dealt with, Hikari had proven herself not to be the type to demand reinstatement. She knew why she was here and knew she needed help, even if she was reluctant to accept it. "Once I am satisfied that you are recovered from your trauma, I could put in the request for reinstatement. To do that you must first get past your issues with intimacy, discuss your thoughts on not being able to have children with Neji, and show some improvement where your nightmares are concerned."
She put her head in her hands, feeling defeated, "I guess I'll be stuck doing genin level missions forever then."
"Why do you say that?"
She looked at him with cold eyes, her stress level had skyrocketed after what he had said, "because the nightmares will never stop, I have had them for years now, long before what happened."
"Elaborate, before what happened, if you can't talk openly about it you're not getting past it."
She growled in frustration, "ugh fine, I have had these nightmares long before he attacked me in the forest and violated me with a fucking dagger, they've been going on since I was a child, since the first time he raped me. They will never leave me, but I have learned to live with them. So even if I do everything else you want it will never be enough."
"Calm down Hikari," his voice was soothing. "If that is truly the case we can discuss it further. For now let's talk about you and Neji. Last week you got very upset and ran out of here, what happened after that?"
"I went home, worked out my frustration, and then Neji and I talked about things."
"What kind of things, be specific."
Hikari blushed brightly, "well to be honest, there really wasn't much to say, I asked him if you had explained my situation to him and he confirmed that you did and then, well we..." she trailed off suddenly finding the carpet very interesting.
"You engaged in physical contact?" she nodded, "how far did you go?"
Her blush deepened, she really hated talking to people about what she and Neji did in private, but she knew she couldn't avoid it with the doctor so she pushed herself to say it. "We kissed, and then I was on his lap, and he..." she paused again, building up her courage, "he was getting aroused and I panicked so we stopped until I got myself back under control. Then he gave me a back rub and the next thing I knew I was waking up next to him on the floor in the den."
"That's good, you're making progress."
"That's not all, the next night, after a sparring match, it was amazing, and well," she tried to find the right words, not to sound vulgar or too technical, "we made love," she finished quietly.
Dr. Kokoro studied her body language, looking for any sign that she might be lying, she had her head down to hide her blush and was looking very embarrassed but not untruthful, "how did you feel afterwards?"
"I don't know, good, happy, safe, I just felt a whole lot better, like I had put the pain and fear behind me. It was like a weight had been lifted." The redness was finally starting to fade as she spoke of how she had felt.
"Was it just the one time?" he watched as the blush flared again.
She shook her head slightly, if he hadn't been so observant he would have missed it, "no there have been a few times now," she whispered.
"Hikari, I'm proud of you that you have finally managed to make such a leap in progress. Now the next step will be to speak with Neji about your fears of being infertile, and what that may mean for your relationship in the future. I will not push you to address this yet, but when you are comfortable it is a conversation that will have to take place. Just remember that I am here for you, and if you think it would be better to talk here we can make an appointment for the two of you to come in together, you understand?"
"Yes sir, thank you. Will there be anything else today?"
"No, I think you are coming along nicely, just remember to make an appointment with Tanoshi on your way out."
"I will sir, have a good afternoon," she exited the room to where Neji waited for her.
"How'd it go?" he asked.
Hikari shrugged, "I'll tell you about it when we get home." She made an appointment with the girl and they headed out together.
When they returned home Hikari suggested a game of shogi in the library, they could talk there. He followed behind her but when she entered the room they found the shogi board had already been claimed by Itachi and Shikamaru.
"Hey Shikamaru, what brings you here?"
He didn't even take his eyes off the board as he spoke, "I need to have a word with Sasuke, but he isn't home, just figured I'd chill here until he is."
"Too troublesome to go all the way home and come back?" Neji asked with a raised eyebrow.
"You got it," he turned his eyes to Hikari as he waited for Itachi to make his next move, "how'd your appointment go?"
She wasn't even going to ask how he knew about it, she had no problem speaking of these matters with the three men in front of her. Neji for obvious reasons, Itachi had become her confidant, when Neji wasn't around, she owed the man her sanity after all. Shikamaru already knew more than most and likely more than he let on. She led Neji over to the bay window and waited for him to sit down before settling herself between his legs, resting against his chest. Her shoulders slumped in defeat.
"That bad huh?"
"No, it went alright, just not how I had expected. He said he's happy with the progress I've made, now if only these fucking nightmares would just go away."
"I thought you said they didn't affect you?" she could feel the rumble in his chest as he spoke, it relaxed her.
"It doesn't, but my opinion doesn't matter apparently," she said bitterly.
"Why not find someone who can attest to the fact that you are able to function properly even with the nightmares occurring," Itachi suggested.
"Who would I get to do that, he won't take your word for it, we're both patients of his and we're friends living under the same roof, he would probably think it's a ploy, that I convinced you to say it. Neji can't do it because I don't have them when he's around."
"While I have never been witness to your nightmares, I can attest to the fact that they don't affect your mental capabilities, if your shogi gameplay is anything to go by," Shikamaru offered, "it would be troublesome but I'll do it."
She was touched, "thank you Shikamaru, but you're just one person, even if Aunt Tsunade does value your opinion. They would want someone impartial."
"Why not Orochimaru-sama then? He's known you since before the nightmares started and he had a strong influence on your training, he would know best," Neji pointed out.
Hikari thought that over, it seemed like a good idea, "Itachi, do you think Kira would let me use Fukushin so I could write to him?"
"You could ask her, but I don't think she would mind."
"Great, is she still over at the house?"
"Yeah, just walk right in, she probably wouldn't hear it if you knocked."
"I'll be back in a bit," she gave Neji a quick peck on the cheek and took off to find the girl.
Kira lay on the floor of the master bedroom, surveying her work, she had just finished the last room, she couldn't wait to show Itachi the finished product. She heard someone enter the room and looked over to see Hikari standing there. "Hi Hikari, what's up?"
Hikari looked at the room in awe, it was beautiful, the walls were simple, painted a deep blue as was the ceiling, however it was adorned with small stars surrounded by the phases of the moon, giving the impression that you were viewing the night sky, "Kira this is, incredible."
Kira smiled at her, "thank you, I really like the way it turned out, it was probably the easiest room in the house, but my neck hurts from staring up so much. You should see it at night, I used luminescent paint for the stars so they really pop. Did you get to see the rest of the house?"
"Briefly, I couldn't stop to admire them though I was looking for you."
"Come on then, I'll show you, we can talk while you check it all out," the girl gave her a big smile, she was excited to show off all of her hard work.
"Sounds good," she followed the girl, "I was just wondering if I could borrow Fukushin? I need to send a letter."
"That's not a problem, I'm glad to help."
They toured the house slowly so that Hikari could take it all in. The hallways were done to give the sense of walking through a town at dusk, painted with shades of pink, orange, and red, buildings scattered at random intervals, street lamps blended in so they were one with the actual lights.
The guest room was done in a blue so dark it almost looked black, instead of stars like in the master bedroom, splashes of color accented the walls like bursts of fireworks.
The den was done in rich browns and greens, depicting a forest landscape in the peak of summer. "I want to get some hanging ivy in here to make it look more realistic," Kira explained.
In the kitchen she had given it the look of a beautiful garden with a lake and tall pagoda in the distance, one bathroom was done to look like a beach, the master bathroom though was absolutely stunning though, Hikari thought it might be her favourite. The floor had small tiles individually laid to make it look like a stream lined with rocks leading away from the massive shower. She must have used water resistant paint to make the breathtaking water fall, faux rocks outlined it, when she turned it on Hikari saw that the shower heads were located behind the fake stones to make it look that much more genuine.
"Wow, it's just wow, I can't believe you did all of this in such a short time."
Kira blushed at the compliment, "I just couldn't tear myself away. The only room I didn't do was the study, Itachi wanted it similar to yours so with the wall to wall bookshelves there wasn't much room to paint."
"Who cares, it's breathtaking. You could hire yourself out if you wanted to, I bet people would be lined up around the block to have their homes look like this."
"You really think so?"
"There's no question about it, hell I'd hire you in a second, it's all so realistic and peaceful, a great escape from the world we live in."
"I would love to paint something for you, after all you've done for us."
Hikari flashed her a bright smile, "I would like that, and I'm sure Neji would too, but let's wait awhile, you don't want to work yourself to exhaustion. Come on let's drag the guys over to see what you've accomplished.
"Oh before I forget, I'm having a birthday party at my house this friday for Shikamaru and Ino, would you like to come, it would be a great opportunity for you to meet the rest of the group, most of them will be there."
"I don't know, I wouldn't want to impose on you and your friends."
"Nonsense, it was actually Ino's idea, but I haven't really had a chance to talk to you with all the work you've been doing."
"Sounds good then, what time does the party start?"
"It starts at eight, we'll be having it in the the back yard," Hikari groaned, "I'm going to have so much decorating to do that day, but it will be worth it."
"I could give you a hand if you want."
"Awesome, we can tag team the guys in to helping too."
The day of the party had everyone in Hikari's house buzzing around to get everything ready in time, they had been successful in convincing both Itachi and Neji to help out, and Hikari recruited Naruto as well. The girls were in the kitchen preparing food and snacks while the guys were outside setting up the yard. Neji and Itachi were hanging paper lanterns from the trees and along the sides of the small bridge while Naruto and one of his clones were adding paper streamers around the deck. The shoji style doors were spread open wide to provide a view of the yard.
"You're sure you don't want any of these lights around the deck?" Itachi asked her when she came outside to bring them lunch.
"Nope I have a special plan for that, we're going to use natural light only for the tables inside."
After their light meal Itachi was dragged home by Kira so she could get ready for the night, and Naruto headed next door to Sasuke's to do the same, he stayed at the Uchiha's house most nights now and there had been no further incidents after the great coffee fiasco. Naruto had purchased a new coffeemaker with a timer so now Sasuke no longer needed to worry about Naruto trying to work the machine in the morning.
Hikari and Neji still had a few things left to do, they spread thin blankets around the yard for their friends to sit on if they wanted to and Hikari had to wait for the sun to set before she could put out the center pieces on the tables.
She was just finishing up when they heard yelling coming from next door, "Oi teme what the hell did you do?!?" Naruto screamed.
Hikari couldn't stop herself from bursting out laughing, even Neji let loose a small chuckle, "you think he did it?"
"That sounds like phase one complete to me," she grinned at the man she loved.
He pulled her in for a soft kiss, "remind me to never mess with your coffee."
"You're smarter than that. Come on, Ino and Shikamaru should be here soon, along with everyone else, I can't wait to see what Naruto will be wearing."
Shortly after eight their friends began arriving in small groups, Ino and Shikamaru first along with their teammate Choji, followed quickly by the others. Everyone was in awe of the job they had done on the back yard, the center pieces on the tables laden with food gave off an unearthly glow, jars filled with fireflies.
"Hikari it's so beautiful," Ino gushed, her eyes brimming with tears of happiness.
"I'm glad you like it, I was thinking at the end of the night we could set them all free at once."
Ino nodded her agreement, "but where are Naruto and Sasuke, are they not here yet?"
Hikari snickered, "I think Naruto is having trouble finding something to wear," Ino raised an eyebrow in confusion, but Hikari caught Itachi, who was a few feet away smirk at her comment. "Oh wait here a moment, I have something for each of you," she was back moments later holding two small packages, "happy birthday."
Shikamaru opened his to find a book; The Art of War, "I asked Ino first to make sure you didn't have it yet, figured it was right up your alley."
Ino opened hers and gasped at the butterfly bracelet inside. "Thank you Hikari, it'll go perfect with the hair clips you got me for Christmas." She pulled Hikari into a tight hug
"I thought you'd like it," she said with a smile, she saw the look Neji was giving her and shot him a glare, daring him to say something about it, he wisely kept his thoughts to himself.
Sasuke and Naruto chose that moment to make their appearance, Sasuke was literally dragging Naruto behind him, a smug look on his face. Naruto looked uncomfortable, wearing a pair of dark grey slacks and a black shirt emblazoned with the Uchiha fan on the back, he played with the hem of the shirt. To Sasuke it was his way of claiming the blonde as his own for anyone who might have had doubts.
"Naruto, looking good, but what happened to your usual attire?" Hikari asked feigning ignorance.
Naruto grumbled unhappily, "Sasuke-teme shrunk my clothes while doing laundry."
"It's not like I meant to do it," Sasuke defended himself, pretending to be hurt by the blondes words. "Some of my clothes were shrunk too remember." Naruto just glared at him and walked off to talk to Kiba.
Music played, drinks flowed, everyone enjoyed the food, it was a good night. Once Naruto imbibed a large amount of alcohol he forgot about what he was wearing and enjoyed himself as well, dragging Sasuke from group to group making sure he got to spend some time with each of his friends.
At the end of the night they released the fireflies and everyone started to stumble home, Neji ended up have to carry Hikari up to bed she was so out of it. He knew she would have a terrible hangover in the morning but with how much everyone had enjoyed themselves he figured it was worth it, even if she wouldn't remember much of it the next day.
