Chapter 3. Two Years Later
A/N: This chapter starts shortly after Itachi and Kisame's run-in with Jiraiya when he used the Toad Mouth Bind on them, the second part of the chapter will take place during and after the whole Gaara abduction.
Over two years had passed since Kira had settled in her little cottage. She was enjoying the quiet life she led there, but she missed Itachi, she just couldn't seem to form bonds with anyone in the area. With Itachi she could be herself, he knew all of her secrets, even if she didn't know all of his. With the villagers here she was just playing a part. She was surprised last year when Itachi had showed up on his seventeenth birthday and then a month and a half later when she turned twelve, the same was true this year. She had assumed that he would brush off the pact she had suggested in her state of delirium, pretend it never happened, but he didn't. She wasn't quite sure what had changed but something had, and she was glad for it.
Until last week, rumors were spreading like wildfire, of a dangerous group of s-class criminals calling themselves the Akatsuki, with their black cloaks emblazoned with red clouds. She needed to see him, needed some answers but she was too afraid to send Fukushin to find him, a small part of her wanted to keep seeing him in the same light as before. But she knew whenever he came again she would ask those hard questions.
He and Kisame went their separate way after the battle with the Sannin. His head was reeling, he had seen Sasuke, and he had changed, a lot. He was starting to question the choices he had made when it came to his brother, worried that he might choose the wrong path. Then there was the Akatsuki, he had finally uncovered theirs plans for the jinchuriki. He and Kisame had been sent after the nine-tails within Naruto, he couldn't let it happen, he was grateful the boy had been with Jiraiya so their failure wouldn't look too suspicious.
Now he was headed into the mountains, to her, he hadn't been able to check up on her lately and he needed to assure himself she was still safe.
Kira was working outside cutting firewood when she heard someone behind her, she turned to see Itachi standing there.
"Kira," he took a step towards her, but she stepped back, he stopped.
"Word travels fast," no further explanation was needed, she knew he would know what she was talking about.
Itachi nodded sadly, she could see the sorrow in his eyes before he could hide it, "I'll just go, sorry to bother you."
She felt her chest contract as he turned away from her, "Itachi, wait," he paused but didn't turn, "I still trust you, I will trust you always, but right now I need you to trust me with the truth." She watched his shoulders slump in resignation, he turned to face her.
"What do you want to know?" His voice was cold, his eyes hard.
"Come inside we'll talk there." He followed her into her home, she directed him to sit at the table while she made tea. He was silent as she worked, waiting for her to speak that first dreaded question. She placed a cup in front of him but he didn't touch it.
Kira took a deep breath, bracing herself for what she was about to hear. "Is it true, that you were the one responsible for the deaths of your whole family?"
"Yes."
While she had hoped for more than that, he had never been one to waste words, if she wanted more she would have to push for it, "why? And please look at me."
He raised his eyes to meet her, despite her reaction when she first saw him today, she still looked at him without fear now. "It was the only thing that could be done, everyone, the whole clan, they planned to overthrow the village."
"It was an order?" He nodded, "but your little brother, you left him alive, he was innocent in all of it, right?"
"Yes, I couldn't let him die, if I hadn't done it they would have sent someone else to slaughter them all."
She studied him, he kept his voice calm, his eyes empty, at least on the surface. Beneath she could see them swirling with emotions; sadness, anger, regret, even fear. Was he worried she would reject him? Her eyes filled with tears for him, but she wouldn't let them fall, not until she had heard everything.
"Tell me about the Akatsuki, what do they want with me and all the others?"
"They wish to capture all of the jinchuriki."
"That much I already know, but why? What do they have planned if they get us?"
"They want the bijuu, they will take you and extract them, the process will kill you. When they have assembled all of the nine tailed beasts they will have the power to use the ten-tails."
"Where do you stand in all of this, why keep me safe all this time?"
"I do not want to see them succeed, as long as they don't get all nine of you..." He trailed off.
"There's just one more thing I need to know, the rumours say you travel in pairs, that man, the one who killed my parents, he was your partner. Did you know? Were you there?"
"No, no I wasn't there Kira, I swear to you, if I had been, I would have tried to stop him. We had been sent to gather intel, we found nothing, he left me to find an outlet for his frustration, he didn't find out until much later who they were." It was too much, she cracked, dissolved into tears. Itachi didn't know what to do, all he wanted was to comfort her but chances were his touch would be the last thing she wanted. "I should go."
She dove across the table, landing in his lap, she grasped him like a lifeline, he was all she had left in this world. "Don't leave me, please."
He held her, thankful that she still trusted him as much as did after all he had told her. She stayed there until she fell asleep, exhausted from all the tears she had shed. He tried to put her to bed, but she still wouldn't relinquish her hold on him, as if afraid he would vanish as she slept. Not that he could blame her, he had made a habit of doing just that in the past.
He couldn't help but feel he was failing her and himself. He swore he would keep her at a distance, that she couldn't get attached, but here they were. She needed him, and if he was honest with himself he needed her too, needed her to assure him that he was doing the right thing, that he still had worth. But he knew when the time came he would leave her to face Sasuke, he would need to prepare her for that, but now was not the time to do it. She had been burdened with enough for the time being.
When Kira awoke the next morning she found herself alone, she wasn't surprised, but it did hurt. After yesterday she had hoped he would stay with her at least for a day or two. She rolled over not wanting to leave her warm bed yet to face the day.
"Have you been slacking off? What are you doing still in bed, get up." Kira shot up like a rocket at the sound of his voice, before she could say anything he continued talking, "come outside, let's see what you've learned," he smirked at her.
He had her demonstrate everything she had studied while he was gone, as well as all he had taught her to make sure she hadn't forgotten. By the end she collapsed on the ground in exhaustion, she just lay there staring up at the clouds floating by.
He sat down beside her, "you're doing well, but you still have a long way to go, I only wish I could take you to the cloud village."
She looked over at him to see him deep in thought, "why the cloud village?"
"I have heard they have a secret location jinchuriki go to train to gain full control over the bijuu within them. It would increase your power exponentially. But without a country of your own they would more than likely want to take you for themselves."
"Oh," was all she could think to say.
"Let's go back inside, you've exerted yourself enough for one day, I have something else to show you."
She prepared lunch before joining him at the table. "Are you going to teach me something new?"
"In a sense, may I see your charcoal set?" He asked as he pulled a piece of parchment towards him, she handed it over. "I'm going to teach you about a couple different types of kekkei genkai, focusing mainly on dojutsu today, including," he quickly drew a sketch of his own eye as well as several similar designs, “The Sharingan.”
She listened intently as he described the abilities of the Sharingan and what it was capable of, before moving on to other types. She found it all very fascinating. When he was done she bit her lip, trying to build up her courage, finally she decided to just come out and ask the question, “Can you show me?”
“Sorry, what?”
“The Tsukuyomi, could you show it to me?”
“After everything I told you yesterday and today, you would willingly let me use the Tsukuyomi on you?” he was flabbergasted
“I trust you completely. From what you've told me you have complete control while using it, I know you would never use it to hurt me,” she told him honestly.
Itachi shook his head, “no, even if it's not being used to torture a persons psyche it messes with your perception of time, it would take a lot out of you, even if only used for a few seconds. Don't ask me to do this.”
“Sorry,” she could see the pain in his eyes.
“Don't be sorry,” he draped his arm over her shoulders comfortingly. She leaned against him, still tired from earlier.
“Itachi?”
“Hmm.”
“How long can you stay this time?”
“Just a few days, I will need to get back soon.”
~Time jump to when Shippuden begins~
Kira had made a trip to the village to gather information, Itachi had sent her a warning stating that Akatsuki teams were on the move and to keep and eye and ear out for them in her area. She decided to take it upon herself to change locations, she shut up her house hoping that no one would destroy all she had worked for here, even if she may never see it again. She scribbled a quick note to Itachi telling him that she was heading towards Suna. She knew there was a jinchuriki there as well so she would still have a heads up if it got too dangerous there. She set out.
Itachi had to do everything in his power to keep his emotions under control. They had all been summoned when Deidara and Sasori successfully captured Gaara, the jinchuriki from Suna. This happened just hours after Fukushin had shown up with a note from Kira, she was headed straight for danger without realizing it, and there would be no way to warn her before she reached the area if she wasn't there already. He could only hope no one would notice her. All these years he had done everything in his power to keep her identity hidden from everyone. A picture had surfaced of her with her parents, shortly after Kisame had killed them, when her village had noticed she was missing. Lucky for her, she looked nothing like she used to, many people, the Akatsuki included, mistook her for a boy and Itachi never intended to correct that perception of her.
So with his mind somewhere else he went with Kisame to join the others, for the next three days she would be safe while they were occupied. Afterwards he just hoped he could find her before anyone else did.
The massive explosion followed by the huge cloud of sand was seen from miles away, Kira witnessed it herself. She froze in her tracks when she saw it, she had just crossed the boarder too. She wanted nothing more than to retreat, she was sure this couldn't be a sign of anything good, but until Fukushin returned she would have to find a place to stay, if Itachi heard what had happened in the area he would come looking for her, she was sure of it. She needed to find a place inside the boarder but as far away from the action as possible.
When all was said and done Itachi wanted nothing more than to leave and find Kira, but it took him another full day to shake Kisame. He knew she would have heard about what had happened to the Kazekage, even if she had not seen it herself, she was smart and would have kept her distance while still staying within Wind country so that he could find her. He kept his eyes on the skies as he traveled, hoping to see her familiar bird.
It had been days since she had arrived and she still hadn't heard anything from Itachi. Fukushin had returned to her the day before with no reply. She didn't dare send him out again, just in case Itachi was with the Akatsuki, it would draw too much attention. She had set up camp in the forest that bordered the country. She hoped nothing had happened to him.
Now she sat high off the ground, perched in a tree, hidden from above and below by a sea of green leaves. She gazed upwards between the small breaks that let the light filter down to the forest floor. Every once in awhile she would see Fukushin's shadow soar overhead and black out a portion of the light. She sighed; Where was he? Did something happen? If so how long should she wait before moving on, and then where would she go? All these questions and more flooded her mind.
Itachi was meticulously checking the area for any sign of her, the longer it took the darker his thoughts grew, all he knew for sure was that she had not been found by the Akatsuki, if that had happened he would have been summoned again. There were so many other things that could have happened too. He heard the cry of a bird high above the canopy of trees, desperate for any sign of the girl he had grown to care for, he ascended for a better look. When his head breached the surface he looked up. There was a golden eagle circling a copse of trees a short distance away. He whistled a bird call to draw the animal to him, it was Fukushin. He let himself fall back to the grassy earth and the loyal bird followed him, stopping to perch on his shoulder.
"Take me to her," he whispered and watched him take flight, Itachi hot on his tail. The bird stopped at the base of a tree, Itachi looked up, and with the help of his sharingan he spotted her. "Kira!" He called up to her.
"Itachi!" She called back as she let her self drop from the tree, he caught her before she could land and didn't let her go, she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled his head to rest against hers. "I was so worried, when I saw that explosion...." He shocked her into silence by slamming his lips against hers.
When he pulled back she was panting slightly, "you stupid stupid girl, don't ever put yourself that close to danger again." He punctuated each word with another kiss.
Kira's mind was filled with fog as she struggled to listen to what he was saying. She had harboured feelings for him for awhile now, but she was convinced he saw her as nothing more than a friend or possibly a sibling, they had known each other for so long, but now this. He was still yelling at her in between kisses when the words finally registered in her mind, but he left her no time to retort, instead she responded to his kiss. He didn't stop until they were both out of breath.
He still refused to let her go, "what on earth were you thinking?" He panted.
"After your last letter, I was worried I had been there too long, I'm sorry 'Tachi. Do you want me to go back?"
"No we're going to find you a place near Suna." His eyes roamed her body, looking to see if she was injured at all.
"But that explosion, Itachi what happened?"
She didn't know, "you haven't heard, they got the one tail."
He saw the fear grow in her eye, "they got the Kazekage?"
"Yes, listen Kira, because of that they won't be in this area for awhile, it's the safest place for you. Did you leave anything behind?"
She shook her head, "no, nothing that could help track me. As for the villagers, they never even knew my real name."
"I'm going to check on you more often, promise me you'll never do that again. Trust that I will always keep you safe."
"What if something happens to you?"
"I want you to write to me once a week and I will do the same, if I ever miss a letter, travel to the closest country, but avoid the Konoha and the sound villages, I can't follow you there."
"I understand Konoha, but why not the Sound?"
Itachi sighed, "an ex-member of the Akatsuki has control of that village, there's no telling what would happen if he found you there, come on we need to get moving," he released her and picked up her pack.
Before they left the shelter of the trees he shed his cloak and replaced it with a baggy hoodie to hide his face. He was able to find a small apartment furnished apartment for her to rent a short distance to the city gates of Suna.
The first thing Kira did was start stashing weapons around the house so that there was always one with in arms reach, Itachi watched with interest as she did so. He allowed himself to relax, just a bit, and get lost in thought. Thinking back to the forest and his first reaction when he saw her. He couldn't deny she had turned into an attractive young woman. Gone was the awkward girl, who could easily be mistaken for a boy, in her baggy clothes and short hair.
Now her hair cascaded in gentle curls ending just above the perfect curve of her ass. He could make out the contours of her breasts beneath the skin tight black shirt she was wearing, he could imagine them bare, heaving as she panted beneath him. She was looking at him now, with those brilliant celedon eyes that saw past all of his defenses and into his soul.
"Itachi," she was right in front of him now, he had a glazed over look to his eyes as if he were somewhere else. "Are you okay?" She asked him, cautiously reaching out to place a hand on his cheek.
He closed his eyes at her touch, unconsciously leaning into it. When he opened them again they were clear once more, "you should get some rest, it's been a long day." He covered her hand with his own as he spoke, how had she managed to get so close, when had she started to mean so much to him. "I should go," his voice barely above a whisper.
"What if I want you to stay?" He matched her gaze for only a moment before pulling her roughly into his lap and devouring her mouth, she responded to him without hesitation. When he pulled back her eyes opened to half mast, clouded with desire, “Please stay the night.”
He knew he should leave, but he couldn't bring himself to do so, he nodded. She stood and tugged on his sleeve, a silent request that he follow her. Once in the bedroom she changed into a long t-shirt that came down to mid-thigh and a small pair of shorts, while Itachi kept his back turned to her. She had lived in a one room cottage for so long, it was second nature to them. Itachi himself, removed his shirt and didn't bother to remove his pants before they climbed into opposite sides of the bed. Kira lay on her side, a pillow wrapped in her arms, Itachi sat propped up by pillows, keeping a silent vigil until sleep claimed him as well. Some time during the night he had thrown an arm around her waist and pulled her back flush against his chest, they were still in that position when he woke up the next morning.
When Kira opened her eyes she was surprised to find a foreign weight stretched across her abdomen, she had expected him to have disappeared into the night. Even after all this time he still kept her at arms length, until yesterday, the memory of his lips on hers made the butterflies in the pit of her stomach stir. She turned to face him, he was already awake. “Thank you for staying.”
He placed a gentle kiss on her forehead, “We need to talk.”
Kira sighed she knew what he wanted to say, “I know, you don't have to say it. I know you can't stay, I understand.”
He closed his eyes and rested his forehead on hers, even now she knew, she accepted that one day he would be gone and not return. That's why he had to tell her, “There more to it than that. When the day comes for me to return to Konoha, that will be the day I die.”
She felt her heart clench at these words, she had expected as much every time he reminded her that he would leave her one day, but she never thought he would actually speak those words. “I know, but I don't care what is going to happen down the road, today you're here, that's what I care about. When that day comes I will let you go, but not before then. But I need you to do something for me too.” She didn't know where this courage was coming from, she was usually willing to follow his lead, do as she was told. But now that he had finally said those words, she knew what she had to say. “Itachi I will always trust you, there's no one else I can ask to do this for me, I know you won't want to do it. But this is what I want and because of that I know you will do it.
“If the day ever comes when they have all of the tailed beasts with the exception of the one in Konoha and myself, I want you to kill me.” She felt his sharp inhale and knew he was about to argue with her, “No Itachi, it has to be done, it's what I want. Don't you see without me they can't succeed, Matatabi dies with me, there is no telling how long it will be until he comes back but it gives you, gives the world more time. I should have died with my parents that night, I know that now, and that's why I need you to do this for me.
“I'm not a fighter Itachi, if it came down to me against them I would fall. Look at what the Kazekage was capable of and they still got him, I'm no where even close to his level, I never will be. Please Itachi, you're the only one I can trust to do it.”
“You don't know what you're asking of me.”
“Yes I do, and that's why I know you can do it, you've done it before you can do it again.”
She was right, he had done it before, he had destroyed his clan for the sake of the village, and now she wanted him to destroy her for the sake of the world. The last time had nearly destroyed him, “Kira I don't know if I can do it again.”
“Yes you can, I know you can. I trust you always to do the right thing, even if it's not easy, and this is the right thing to do. Look at me Itachi,” hesitantly he locked eyes with her, she could see the pain he carried with him, “Promise me please.”
“I promise,” he kissed her deeply, dipping his tongue between her lips letting his actions convey the words he could never bring himself to say. He pulled her closer to him, his hands roamed over her, running his blunt nails down her back, and grabbing her ass roughly. Kira moaned and arched into him, he felt her reach between them, her hands eager to explore his bare chest. “Don’t move,” he growled at her.
She stilled her hands as she felt the rumble in his chest, bit her lip worried she had done something wrong. But he didn't stop his roaming hands and she felt his lips move to her neck nipping along her jaw line before giving her earlobe a gentle tug with his teeth. Moving to her collar bone he bit down, sucking her flesh into his mouth to mark her clear skin. A gasp escaped her and she had to struggle to stay still as he felt his hand slip beneath her shirt, his fingers sending shock waves down her spine as they trailed up towards her breast, stopping just short of the mark. She whimpered, wanting more.
"Look at me Kira," she opened her eyes to stare at him, "do you want me to stop?"
"No, I trust you."
That was all he needed to hear, he rolled her onto her back and straddled her hips. Leaning forward, he pinned her hands above her head while the other returned to its place under her shirt. Kneading her supple mounds he descended upon her mouth once again.
Her whole body wanted to respond to the way his hands caressed her, she felt him grind against her and she had to stop her own hips from bucking up to meet him. "'Tachi," she moaned, she could feel the vibrations when he emitted a low dark chuckle.
"Move with me," he commanded but did not release her hands. Instead she bucked her hips, arched her back, hungry for more contact. His hand abandoned her breasts, trailing down, slipping under her ass to give it a squeeze before tracing her outer thigh, moving at a treacherously slow pace to rest between her legs.
Kira was gasping for breath now as he left a scorching path in his wake as kissed down her jaw bone to her neck and back up again. Her muscles strained to bring his fingers against her heat. He could feel the wetness through her tiny, skin tight, black shorts. He circled that tiny nub of nerves through the fabric.
Applying pressure in such a way as to bring her to the brink, he could feel her hands twisting, wanting to break his hold on them but she didn't dare in fear he would stop. "Oh Kami, 'Tachi," she screamed his name as she went over the edge.
Itachi lay down beside her, bringing her to rest her head on his chest, drawing lazy circles on her back until she was claimed by sleep once more.
