Chapter 3: The Genin Entrance Exams
Konoha one year later: Less than one month until Genin Entrance Exams
Naruto was walking towards his favourite restaurant Ichiraku Ramen. He was one month away from becoming a Genin. He was one of the best Taijutsu (hand-to-hand) and Kenjutsu (weapons user) fighters in the Academy and he was quite skilled with Ninjutsu and Fuinjutsu (sealing techniques) but he still needed improvement in chakra control and Genjutsu, but without Kurama he would be totally hopeless at it. However he kept his skill levels and abilities secret from everybody and trained in secret to improve his abilities.
Naruto lifted up the one of the curtain barriers and stepped into the shop.
“Hey old man” Naruto greeted the middle aged owner with a grin.
“Oh hello Naruto the usual today?” asked Teuchi turning around to greet the child who was one of his best customers.
“How was the academy today?” asked Ayame. Teuchi and his daughter Ayame were the closest things to friends that Naruto had.
“Yep, nothing better than a roast pork and miso ramen after a boring day at the academy” he replied to both questions. For the past month all that had been going on was review after review of all the essential ninja skills and knowledge for a Genin, and they still had less than a month more of this before the exams began.
Teuchi placed a steaming bowl of ramen in front of him. Naruto grabbed a pair of chopsticks breaking them apart. He thanked Teuchi for the ramen before heartily digging in.
The moon was shining high in the sky as Naruto sat on the couch in the living room of his apartment cleaning the blades of the two katanas he had stolen over a year ago now. One of the blades had been nicked during training that afternoon.
“Hey Kurama? Why can’t I learn any Genjutsu?” Naruto asked his resident “Demon.”
“That’s simple Naruto you are a fighter plain and simple. Your chakra is very powerful and you have such reserves of it. So your body has so much stamina that it is adapted to physical activity like close quarters combat.” Replied Kurama in his head.
“So a genjutsu user has small reserves of chakra?”
“Yes much of it depends on chakra reserves at birth and how much they grow as a person does. The only exception to this is Kekkei Genkai.”
“Kekkei Genkai?” Naruto parroted back.
“Yes that Uchiha in your class, his clan traditionally has high chakra reserves. But their clan’s Kekkei Genkai the Sharingan allows them to use powerful Genjutsu.”
“Uchiha, what that silent self-obsessed, thinks he’s better than everyone else, asshole Sasuke?” Naruto asked not really surprised that Sasuke would come from a powerful family. “Oh well, who cares?” he continued appraising the gleaming blade of the katana he had just finished cleaning and polishing. He rotated the blade and caught the moon’s reflection off of the oiled blade’s surface before picking up the empty scabbard beside him. He sheathed the blade and stared at the eight notches at the base of the hilt and that would be mirrored on the other sword’s hilt as well. The notches were the physical reminders of the lives Naruto had taken during his young life and he was only twelve years old.
“Kurama remember when that idiot Hibachi and his three idiot friends tried to get us killed by going into the back hills when those Hidden Waterfall (Takigakure) ninjas were trying to steal those defence plan’s.”
“Yes that was some epic fun” Kurama chuckled as he and Naruto thought back to those events some ten or so months ago.
Naruto was leaving class at the academy and was walking for the entrance gate when he overheard Hibachi talking about a test of courage to his three cronies.
“Test of courage huh?” Naruto asked one of Hibachi’s cronies who was smacked over the head by their leader. “Shut up, why did you have to tell him?”
“Get lost, Naruto don’t try to follow us you freak” Said hibachi as he turned to Naruto after smacking the loudmouth crony. “Come on you guys we’re leaving.”
As Naruto watched the four leave he frowned as he registered their scents so he could track them anywhere in the village. ‘Fucking idiots, I’ll show you.’ Naruto silently pledged.
He waited fifteen minutes before setting of to track those four. He was walking down a small street thinking what would be best to prank the four boys in their “trial of courage.” He had the perfect plan when he saw an imitation ANBU fox mask on the side of a shop wall halfway down the street. He ran towards the shop and stood in front of the masks gazing up at the fox mask before him.
“Kurama I’ve got the perfect plan for pranking those four fucks” he said to his vulpine resident.
Before Kurama could answer the store owner turned towards Naruto. “Hey you little Demon Brat, get out of here!” he said as he picked him up and threw him out onto the street.
“Hey what the hell I wasn’t doing anything” Naruto said defiance all-over his face. “I was just looking at the masks you had.”
“Here take it you little pest and fucking get lost” said the store owner picking the fox mask off the wall and throwing it as hard as he could at Naruto.
Naruto picked up the mask and looked around him at the hate filled eyes of the villagers. “What are you looking at?” He turned back to the store owner “You better watch yourself old man, when I’m a ninja you better remember who your dealing with, otherwise you might have an explosive end hmm” he chuckled at his own witty innuendo. With mask in hand he ran from the crowd of evil looks towards his apartment, time to set up this prank.
It was the middle of the night the moon had just risen above the horizon. Naruto had tracked the four prank targets to the village cemetery.
‘This is their test of courage, what cowards’ Naruto thought as he stood in one of the trees behind the large flame monument.
He watched Hibachi slowly walk up the steps to the cemetery and make his slow way to the flame monument. Naruto could smell the fear radiating from the boy bellow of him. As hibachi looked down he jumped from the trees to the top of the monument letting out a feral growl he had been practicing with Kurama all afternoon.
Hibachi froze in place looking around for the source of the growl before looking up at the top of the monument to find a shadowy figure with the face of a fox. He turned tail and ran screaming “It’s a monster fox” dropping the lantern he carried which burst into flame when it hit the ground.
Naruto dropped to the floor laughing as loudly as his heaving lungs could take. He was just able to dodge as a flying kunai whizzed just in front of his face. He rolled to his feet drawing a kunai from each of the holsters he had on both thighs. Standing at the entrance of the cemetery was a fat ninja who Naruto recognized was one of the academies instructors.
“Always a pest, Naruto, nothing but a pe…” his shout was choked off as he felt the overwhelming hate and bloodlust radiating off of Naruto like a vice grip around his throat.
“Fuck off, before I kill you!” Naruto growled releasing more and more negative emotions into the surrounding atmosphere. He dodged to the side as another pair of kunai’s whizzed past, landing just behind where he had been standing. If those kunai had hit him at least one would have pierced his heart. He pulled two smokebombs from the right pouch on the back of his waist; he threw one at the fat instructor and threw the second at his feet before turning around and jumping up into the trees and fleeing back to his apartment.
‘Two, two instructors trying to kill me, what shit bad luck’ he thought. “Kurama are they following us?”
“No, they aren’t following”
“Damn I’m never going back to the Academy now, especially with two instructors possibly tryin to kill me, FUCK!” Naruto raged inside his apartment. He sighed and decided to go take a shower before going to bed.
A week later to that day he slept-in as was his norm, now that he wasn’t going to the academy. He awoke late had a late breakfast/brunch before he went off to train in one of the unused training grounds outside the village. It was just after four in the afternoon when he strolled back into the village. He was walking through the village his demeanour downcast and his mind elsewhere as he unconsciously headed towards Ichiraku Ramen.
On the side of the street stood Hibachi and two of his flunky friends, they stepped out into the middle of the street and blocked Naruto’s path.
Naruto stopped in his tracks and looked up at the bigger kid. “Yeah what do you guys want?” Naruto muttered irritably.
“Oh nothing really, we just wanted to tell you that you can join our group… If you can retrieve something from a dead body in the back hills” said a sweetly smiling Hibachi.
“Don’t listen to him Naruto, he’s lying I can smell it” Kurama warned in his head.
“Really?” Naruto asked heavily acting all overexcited.
“Yep sure” said a grinning Hibachi who looked at his to flunkies who were smiling and nodding their heads.
“Cool, I’ll bring something back soon” Naruto cheered and ran off down the street heading towards the Hokage Mountain and the forested back hills. ‘Let’s go see what they got in store for us hey Kurama?’ Naruto said to his resident fox.
He was well out of earshot so he didn’t hear the snide remark from Hibachi. “My father said the enemy ninjas could still be in the back hills” which was answered with a round of laughs.
Nobody saw the two children on the bridge above them, who had heard everything that had been said.
Naruto was walking through the forest that covered the back hills. He wore a black shirt with an orange stripe down the centre with the Uzumaki swirl in the centre of his back. He also had a black pair of knee length shorts on. He hadn’t brought any of his stolen weapons with him.
“Where is that battlefield? Good thing I know this place like the back of my hand. He sniffed the air facing straight ahead, then to his left and then to his right before again sniffing in the direction he had already been facing.
“Kurama is that metallic/tangy smell, blood?” Naruto asked. He still hadn’t registered every scent possible.
“Yes that’s drying/stale blood. I’d guess at no more than twelve hours since that blood was shed” was Kurama’s answer. He was still trying to think what angle the lying brat was playing at.
Naruto followed the scent of drying blood deeper and deeper in to the forested hills. He soon came across the battlefield but he couldn’t tell which weapon belonged to an enemy ninja. Looking around he caught a glimpse of the sun blinking off the reflective edge of a metal object high in a tree about fifty metres away. He raced over to the tree and quickly climbed up the tree and looked at the reflective blade of a kunai. Picking it up Naruto regarded the foreign design of the kunai. ‘I guess this is an enemy kunai’ Naruto thought to himself. However his joy was quickly dashed by the voice of Kurama in his head.
“I guess this was a trap, we have company. Three foreign scents two hundred metres to our right and the one called Iruka.” Kurama informed Naruto who slowly raised his head and sniffed the air. “Yeah I can pick up Iruka’s scent but I can’t smell the other three.” Naruto dropped to the ground and waited for Iruka to arrive.
“Naruto you have to come back to the Academy with me” Iruka said.
“Why the fuck should I go back to the Academy?” Naruto challenged angrily. “How the fuck did you know I was here?” he asked, sure he wouldn’t like the answer.
Before Iruka could answer they were interrupted by three masked ninja with hidden Waterfall headbands. Naruto sniffed the air and raised an eyebrow ‘females, all females.’
“Give us the kunai” said the middle ninja of the three ninja.
‘Shit better keep up this charade.’ Naruto thought quickly analysing the situation around him. “No I found it, it’s mine, so get lost” Naruto called before turning and with Iruka following closely ran for the village with the Waterfall ninja in hot pursuit.
As they ran for the village the Waterfall ninjas began throwing shuriken and kunais while in hot pursuit of the information wrapped around the kunai that Naruto held. As the chase went on Naruto soon lagged behind Iruka. On the third volley of shuriken one of the razor sharp stars cut through Naruto’s hamstring causing Naruto to cry out in pain.
At Naruto’s cry of pain Iruka turned around to see that he had easily out distanced the blonde boy. He turned around drawing a kunai of his own and went to the struggling Naruto’s side. He parried two volleys of shuriken picked up Naruto so he was sitting behind him in a piggy-back position before taking off for the village again, parrying more shuriken volleys.
A minute later Iruka looked back to see that the three Waterfall ninja had started to catch up with him. As he was looking back trying to dodge another volley of shuriken that scratched his shoulder and cheek, he watched in slow motion as a kunai with a paper bomb attached to it whizzed past his face and explode upon contact with a volley of shuriken.
“Kakashi!” called Iruka as he stopped on a branch fifteen metres from the silver haired Jonin.
“Take Naruto and get to the village” ordered Kakashi as the pursuing ninja stopped thirty metres away hidden behind some foliage.
“Idiots are out in the bloody open” said the leader of the Waterfall ninja with a smirk on her face. They were stunned when Iruka took off still carrying Naruto and their Intel.
“Ah they’re getting away and leaving only one person behind to face the three of us” said the Kunoichi on the leaders left.
“We’ll take him down together” said the leader.
Together the three Kunoichi stood up and unison made a few quick hand seals. “Fire Style: Synergy Jutsu - Karura” they said in unison. Three beams of fire exploded from the three Kunoichis’ mouths that twinned around each other getting larger and stronger as it raced raced towards the lone figure in Kakashi.
Kakashi ducked and made a few quick hand-seals and produced a mud brick wall to block the fire attack. There was a massive explosion as the two Jutsus clashed. When the smoke cleared the wall crumbled and Kakashi raced forward his hand sheathed in lightning.
“Lightning Blade!” shouted Kakashi as he smashed through the heart of the central of the three Kunoichi expelling the lightning into a massive discharge that arced to the other two Kunoichi electrocuting them.
It was a few hours later when Naruto woke up in a hospital bed. This time he wasn’t tied to the bed, so he took his time stretching the stiff muscles in his back, wincing when he stretched his damaged hamstring.
The slowly opening door soon grabbed his attention. In stepped Iruka, who smiled when he saw Naruto awake and sitting up in bed.
“Ah, you’re awake that is good, I’ve got some good news for you.” said Iruka with a bit of a chuckle as he saw Naruto scowl at him.
“What sort of good news?” asked Naruto suspicion written all over his face and body.
“You’re clear to leave the hospital and resume class tomorrow. Genin entrance exams are in two weeks and you are still eligible to take these exams.” Said a smiling Iruka, he had just returned from a briefing with the Hokage.
“Yeah right!” said a dejected Naruto. “The other examiners will fail me just because I’m the Demon Brat.”
Iruka walked up to the side of the bed and put his hand on Naruto’s shoulder. “I promise you will pass the exams you already possess the skills required to become a Genin, and you already have more combat experience than anybody else in class.”
“We will see, we will see.” Was all that Naruto said as he got up from the bed, “um where are my clothes?” He asked realising he wasn’t in his clothes from that afternoon.
Two days later Naruto was sitting on his couch in his living room thinking up some very imaginative and painful revenge plans for Hibachi and his two goons. They had been very surprised to see Naruto walk into class behind Iruka. Kurama was very quiet but he was enjoying the plans that Naruto planed out for his entertainment.
“So what’s the best punishment for these cowardly fuckers death? Tortured to Death? Or the old fashioned vanishing without a trace?” Naruto asked his resident fox demon.
“It doesn’t matter to me I’ll get a good show whatever you decide to do.” Kurama answered a gleeful light in his eyes and an almost euphoric purr in his voice.
“Well they tried to get me killed, so death is the appropriate punishment. That’s it they die, but how?”
Naruto would spend the next few hours planning the very painful deaths of the three people who had sent him to die.
The next afternoon Naruto followed his three targets through the streets of Konoha, to one of the many ninja training grounds. Today was his lucky day, he had found out today from the academy that Hibachi had kicked out the fourth member of the gang because he had laughed at Naruto’s prank on Hibachi’s test of courage when he was telling the other students in the academy.
Naruto stood at the entrance to the training ground, dressed all in black and he had his two katanas on his back.
“Well Kurama here we go.” Naruto took a deep breath to steady himself before confidently striding out onto the training ground.
Hibachi was the first to notice an armed Naruto walking over to the group of three. “What do you want Naruto? We don’t want you around here.” Hibachi snapped, Naruto could sense the hatred pouring off the other boy.
“Well you said if I found an enemy weapon in the back hills, you would let me hang out with you.” Naruto stated innocently, standing easy, giving nothing away. “As you can see I found two.” He continued drawing both katanas, holding them easily in a loose grip.
Hibachi was furious, his great plan to get the Demon Brat killed had not only failed but Naruto had accomplished the fake task in retrieving enemy weapons. Of course they didn’t know that these katanas had been forged in Konoha and Naruto had stolen them years ago.
Hibachi’s anger, hate and self-righteous fury got the better of him and before he or his cronies could stop him he blurted out the truth. “It was all a lie; you were supposed to be killed.” Hibachi shouted at the top of his lungs.
“I Know” Naruto whispered looking at the two katanas in his hands. As swift as a striking snake the katana in Naruto’s right hand stabbed through Hibachi’s heart. The left katana was swung in a back hand cut, that slit the throat of the crony on Naruto’s left and just as the second crony turned to run. Naruto yanked the katana from Hibachi’s chest, a piece of his heart still on the blade and turned and with a dual backhand/forehand slash, Naruto removed the other crony’s head and severed his spine. Cleaning the blades on the clothes of his newest victims, Naruto prepped the bodies for his signature evidence removal technique. He wrapped the bodies in paper bombs and moved the bodies further into the training ground. Dumping the bodies he raced away towards the training ground entrance. At the entrance he stopped made a few hand-signs and looking over his shoulder and watched the massive explosion that left a crater in the centre of the training ground.
The next week and a half seemed to fly by for Naruto who had thrown himself into his revision and training. Of course the theoretical revision sucked but it was easily compensated with the physical training that Naruto just thrived on besides Ichiraku ramen.
It was a late Friday night with Naruto training alone in one of the unused training grounds when Naruto discovered something new, something exciting.
Naruto raced along the flat open grass of the training ground. He had a set of three kunai in each hand, all of a sudden a man-shaped target popped up on his right at about 3 o’clock. He jumped and twisted in mid-air and threw the three kunai in his right hand at the target before landing in a sprint for the last target that had sprung up at 10 o’clock. Jumping high he threw the remaining kunai in his left hand at the target, all three piercing the bullseye of the man-shaped target.
Breathing a-bit heavily Naruto walked up to his last target, a wide grin on his face as he saw the three bullseyes. ‘Let’s go check the other ones, see if we improved.’ He thought pulling the kunai from the straw stuffed target.
As he retraced his course from end to start he stopped and examined each target. Back at the first target he was slightly disappointed; targets Two through Five were all perfect with three bullseyes either in the head or in the heart. Target One had one miss, and two bullseyes.
“Don’t be disappointed Naruto you killed all five targets. So what you missed the bullseye yet if this target was a real man you would have pierced his throat and killed him.” Kurama said he knew Naruto wanted to become a master shinobi, wanted to be the strongest, the most powerful ninja of all time.
“Besides that Hyuga girl that has been watching you and is watching you now seems to admire your skills and abilities.” Kurama said with a wicked grin, the amusement all too apparent in his voice. He could sense the feelings that the girl had for the boy that was his prison.
“How long has she been watching me today?” Asked a slightly confused Naruto even though he could sense the positive emotions from Hinata because of Kurama, the problem for Naruto was that he had no clue what these positive emotions were.
“Since you began training about three hours ago, I’d say she followed you from the academy. She seems to admire you greatly Naruto.” Replied Kurama with a chuckle that seemed to rumble throughout and shake the foundations of Naruto’s mindscape.
“What’s so funny?” Naruto asked suspiciously. The only answer was the rumble of Kurama’s chuckling.
‘Oh whatever, have it your own way then. That’s enough training for today, time for some Ichiraku ramen.’ Naruto thought peevishly as he replaced the kunai to the two holsters on his thighs.
Naruto took his time going to the Ichiraku restaurant. He strolled along casually until he was standing in front of the restaurant.
Stepping into the restaurant he smiled at Ayame who looked up from cleaning the counter. “Hey Naruto, have you been training?” She asked putting away the cloth she had been using.
“Yeah the Genin Exams start next week so I thought I’d get some last minute training in.” he replied with his signature lopsided grin.
“The usual Naruto?” Teuchi asked as he entered the restaurant behind Naruto.
“You know it old man,” said a grinning Naruto, who after two years had become quite comfortable around these two people. Naruto stayed for two hours enjoying the company of Teuchi and Ayame, who both wished him luck on his Genin Entrance Exams.
The day of the exams came and Naruto was psyched to take these exams and show everybody who doubted him what he was capable of.
“Naruto I think it wise that you hide the full extent of your powers and abilities.” Kurama warned the excited boy.
“Okay, okay, Kurama I’ll try to hide my abilities until after I pass the exams.” Naruto muttered sullenly.
Naruto was the first person to class; he had left his planned Genin gear back at home; which included his Genin clothes, his two katanas and his hidden blade gauntlets, treasures he had taken a year ago from the gang leaders personal treasure.
Sitting in his usual seat at the back of the class, Naruto waited patiently for the class to begin in another forty minutes. The next person to arrive was Sasuke who took a seat on the far side of the room so he could look out the window. As the class filled over the next thirty minutes, soon there was only one student missing. Just as Naruto realised there was a person missing, that person stood behind him and like their first meeting those two years ago, Hinata again asked if she could take the seat next to him, even though there was a few empty seats thanks to Naruto’s little revenge on Hibachi and his two goons.
“Sure” Naruto said, he wanted to ask her about her following him last week but Kurama had told him to keep the fact that he knew a secret.
As Hinata was taking the seat next to Naruto, three of the academy’s instructors walked into the class, two males one with silvery blue-hair, the other chocolate brown and one red-haired female.
Naruto raised an eyebrow, “Where’s Iruka sensei? Hey she’s new, never seen her before.” Naruto said low enough so that only Hinata could hear him.
“What do you mean?” Hinata asked whispering back.
“The female examiner she isn’t an instructor at the academy.” Naruto replied also in a whisper.
“Today you will start your Genin Entrance Exams. We three instructors shall be your examiners. I am Mizuki; my colleagues are Hiro and Taki” The blue haired Mizuki said pointing to his companions when he introduced them. “This morning you will take your written theoretical exam. Then this afternoon you shall take your practical exams.” Mizuki said as he looked around the room.
Mizuki stepped back and the female instructor Taki stepped forward.
“For your exam this morning I shall be your examiner. This exam is a three hour written exam and anybody caught cheating shall automatically fail the exam.” Taki said as Mizuki and Hiro started passing out the exams.
With the exams passed out and the other two examiners returned to the front of the classroom. Taki stepped forward, “the exam will begin at 9:30 and go for three hours, then you will have a hour long break for lunch. It is now twenty past so you can turn over your exam and spend the next ten minutes reading through the exam.” Taki said looking up at the classroom’s clock.
Naruto followed Hinata’s lead and turned over his exam and began quickly looking though the exam. ‘Some of these questions are easy as but some are almost impossible.’ Naruto thought as he continued to look through the exam.
“Don’t worry Naruto I know some of the answers to those harder questions.” Kurama said to the nervous Naruto. Naruto relaxed as Kurama eased his worries.
“The exam begins now.” Taki said as she took up position at the front of the class, while Mizuki and Hiro paced up and down the aisles between the three columns of four rows of desks.
“Pens down, the exam has finished.” Taki said nodding to the other instructors who began to collect the exams.
It was Mizuki who picked up both Naruto’s and Hinata’s exams. Naruto’s eyes widened slightly.
“Kurama did you feel that?” Naruto asked his vulpine tenant.
“Yes, he is up to something, I wonder what though?” Kurama replied.
With all the exams collected Taki stepped forward. “Congratulations you have all completed the first exam. Now you will have an hour break for lunch before you have to report back here for the practical exams.” Taki said before leading the other two examiners out of the room.
The classroom soon emptied as the other academy students left to go relax and have lunch before the practical exams. All most all of the female students stopped next to Sasuke and asked him if he wanted to have lunch with them, to which he turned down all of them with barely more than one word. Soon there were only five people left in the classroom. Naruto paid little to no attention to Hinata next to him or Sasuke, Choji or Shikamaru, as he grabbed his bag and began rummaging around looking for his cup of instant ramen. Finding it at the bottom he pulled it out, stood up slung his bag over his shoulder and walked out the door into the hallway. He headed for the student’s kitchen so he could boil some water for his cup of ramen.
Walking into the unoccupied kitchen he set the kettle to boil. As he waited Naruto struck up a conversation with Kurama.
“How should I go about these practical exams?” Naruto asked before he continued. “Should I try to do well and score high? Or just do the bare minimum?”
“Well we won’t know how to proceed until the exams start, but if you’re picked first do the bare minimum for harder tasks and for easy tasks just don’t show how good you are.” Kurama replied somewhat evasively, he needed time to plan and to go perfectly Naruto needed to go later in the order, hopefully after Sasuke.
Naruto was brought out of his internal chat when he became aware of the whistling kettle, allowing the water to cool for a few minutes before he poured the hot water into the cup, before re-sealing the lid.
“So basically we’re gonna wing this exam, no plan, no nothing?” Naruto asked quizzically.
“Only if you go first in the exam, otherwise I’ll have time to figure out a plan.” Kurama said with a sigh.
“Okay, okay I get it.” Naruto smirked, leaning against the countertop and digging into his cup of instant ramen.
Finishing the cup of ramen he threw the empty cup into the bin and headed back to the classroom. He opened the door and looked around. The room was the same as he left it fifteen minutes ago with Sasuke brooding and looking out the window, Choji and Shikamaru eating and talking and Hinata sitting eating a packed lunch. He entered the room and took his seat beside Hinata who was startled a little when he dumped his bag on the desk.
Naruto watched as again the class refilled over the next to twenty five minutes.
It was 1:30 on the dot when Mizuki, Hiro and Taki entered the classroom, taking up positions at the front of the class. Mizuki stepped forward and addressed the class.
“Soon we will begin the practical exams but first let me explain how these exams will work. First you will demonstrate your skills in the Transformation Jutsu, the Clone Jutsu, the Substitution Jutsu and a Shuriken Jutsu.” Mizuki explained, “Now we will head out to the practice field outside.”
Mizuki and the other two examiners led the class out to the practice field. The class filed onto the practice ground and formed up in a single line across from the instructors.
Mizuki stepped forward again. “For this exam I shall be your examiner for this exam.” He said before continuing. “For this exam we will go by alphabetical order, once you’re finished your exam you shall be free to go for the rest of the day, but be back in class 9 o’clock tomorrow for the final exam.”
Mizuki looked down at the sheet of paper he held. “The first person up Shino Aburame and then Choji Akimichi,” Mizuki called out.
Shino and Choji stepped forward. As Shino demonstrated each Jutsu, Naruto entered his mindscape to talk with Kurama.
“So I go last, plenty of time to come up with a solution for this exam?” Naruto asked with a comical smirk on his face. He also had a plan brewing in his mind and wanted to check with Kurama.
“Kurama does your plan still rely on Sasuke’s score?” Naruto asked.
“Yes, even though watching the next few people could give me baselines for an average score.” Kurama replied deep in thought.
“Kurama what if I just do one less than Sasuke? That way I’ll be between average and above average.” Naruto said. He smiled at Kurama’s nodded approval.
“Good plan Naruto but let’s wait and see we’re lucky he goes before you do.” Kurama said his plan would work perfectly if he could find an average score and put it up against Sasuke’s score.
Naruto watched as most of his class took their exam. “Next Sakura Haruno then Hinata Hyuga and Kiba Inuzuka” Mizuki called out, Sakura walking up to the testing mark. Naruto watched as Sakura pulled off a perfect transformation, produced two clones and successfully used a substitution to dodge a pair of blunted kunai thrown at her back however she was hit on her leg and rib with the other two volleys of kunai. Her shuriken Jutsu wasn’t so good only hitting six of ten targets the same with thrown kunai.
Next was Hinata who perfectly pulled off a transformation, produced three clones and was able to use a double substitution to dodge two volleys of shuriken thrown at her from the flank and then from behind however she was hit on the shoulder with the third. Her shuriken Jutsu and thrown kunai were both a perfect ten hits out of ten targets.
Next up was the loud mouthed, dog breathed Kiba. He produced a passable transformation, produced three clones and was able to dodge two volleys of kunai with substitutions, getting hit in the back of the head with the third volley. With his kunai and shuriken it was 8/10 for both.
“Next… is… Shikamaru Nara.” Mizuki called looking down at the paper in his left hand.
“This is such a drag” Shikamaru complained as he stepped forward to take his turn. He pulled of an almost perfect transformation; he produced two clones and was able to dodge one of three volleys of blunted kunai. His shuriken and kunai were both a 6/10.
‘That guy is sooooo lazy.’ Naruto thought he could tell that Shikamaru hadn’t tried all that hard to pass.
“Up next will be Sasuke Uchiha then Naruto Uzumaki and lastly Ino Yamanaka.” Mizuki said a little tiredly. The moment he said Sasuke’s name all the girls went stupid Naruto thought as he looked around, he was surprised to see Hinata quiet and watching him and not paying any attention to Sasuke.
Sasuke stepped forward and as easily as possible rolled out perfect score after perfect score like it was nothing. He produced a perfect transformation, produced five perfect clones, dodged all three volleys of kunai and scored 10/10 for both thrown kunai and shuriken. As every projectile hit dead centre the girls of the class screamed and cheered Sasuke.
“Naruto you are up now” Mizuki said his voice slimily sweet, which caused Naruto to raise an eyebrow.
“So got a plan yet? Or do I have to stall?” Naruto smirked as he asked his vulpine tenant.
“Shut up you snippy brat we’ll go with your plan just do one less than Sasuke” Kurama said he couldn’t come up with a better plan than this simple one.
Naruto walked up to the exam mark waiting for his transformation task.
“Naruto transform into the Third Hokage” Mizuki said trying to hide his smirk, he knew Naruto had problems concealing and changing his eyes to match the person he was trying to imitate.
Naruto gathered his chakra and transformed into the Third Hokage, however to Mizuki surprise Naruto’s eyes were the same colour as the Third Hokage’s however the nose was Naruto’s original nose. Naruto knew he could have down a perfect copy of the Third.
“Ok now produce some clones.” Mizuki said as he watched Naruto make a few hand seals before an explosion of smoke, which when it dissipated stood three clones of Naruto. Naruto quickly made a few hand seals, and then his real body exploded into smoke as a pair of sharpened kunai plunged into his back. A kunai studded log fell to the ground, Naruto repeated this again twice he knew he couldn’t allow himself to be hit. Lying on the floor were three impaled logs with a pair of kunai imbedded deep into the logs.
“Alright Naruto hit those targets down range.” Mizuki said handing Naruto 10 kunai and 10 shuriken. He was trying very hard and failing to hide his anger and annoyance, especially since Naruto could sense it radiating of both Mizuki and Hiro. Naruto lined up the shots, he could easily hit all ten targets but after the last minute he decided to miss a couple of targets, he definitely didn’t want to show how good he really was. So taking his spot he threw two sets of 8/10’s.
Naruto turned and headed back towards the main academy building leaving the rest of his class behind, most were still buzzing around Sasuke. Hinata fell in besides Naruto as he walked through the academy towards the entrance.
“N…Nar…Naruto y…you did really well in that exam.” Hinata stuttered as she struggled to say what she wanted to say.
“You did really well too Hinata.” Naruto said in all honesty. “You are probably the best female student here, every girl seems only interested in Sasuke but you, and you seem more interested in being a true Kunoichi.” Naruto continued fishing for an emotional response that he could hopefully sense and understand.
“Th…thanks N…Naruto.” Hinata mumbled embarrassed by his praise, which just confused Naruto who was trying to gain some sense of this confusing girl, who was quiet and shy.
They exited the academy with Naruto saying a half-hearted goodbye before heading their separate ways. Naruto headed for home, he was going to have an early night so that he was ready for the final exam tomorrow.
9am the next morning Naruto was sitting in class, Hinata sitting next to him when Mizuki, Hiro and Taki walked into the classroom again taking positions at the front of the class.
This time Hiro was the examiner to step forward. “Today’s exam shall be a gender specific Taijutsu/Combat Knockout Tournament. The winner of each exam shall receive 100 points, 2nd shall receive 85 points, 3rd 75 points, 4th 60 points and the rest shall receive 50 points. Since there are sixteen males and sixteen females in this year the tournament should go smoothly with four rounds.” Hiro said windily as he grabbed the large box on the front desk. “In this box are sixteen balls with numbers on them, as I call your name come and grab a ball and show Taki your number and she shall put your name on this tournament chart to see which student will face who. The girls will go first.”
“Well only three spots left, Sakura Haruno come and get a number” Hiro called. Sakura got up from her seat next to Sasuke and walked to the front of the classroom. Placing her hand in the box she pulled out a white ball, showing the ball to Taki, who took the ball and placed it in another box. She turned to the tournament sheet and wrote Sakura’s name in the second positon on the tournament tree.
“Hinata Hyuga and Ino Yamanaka come and get your numbers, Hinata first.” Hiro said overly loudly.
The two girls walked down to the desk. Hinata put her hand into the box and pulled out the second last number before handing it to Taki who again placed the number in the second box before writing Hinata’s name in the 5th position? This meant there was only one spot remaining for Ino which Taki wrote her name in the 9th position.
“Okay time for the boys” Hiro said grabbing the second box which was full of numbered balls.
Naruto didn’t pay much attention until he realised that only two people hadn’t had their names called yet, him and Sasuke.
“Sasuke Uchiha come and pick a number” Hiro said failing to hide the glee he felt that Naruto would have no luck in choosing his opponent.
Naruto watched carefully as Sasuke pulled out the numbered ball and handed it to Taki, who would he verse in round one Shikamaru or Choji. Naruto watched as Sasuke’s name was written in spot one against Choji. ‘So I’m versing Shikamaru next easy that lazy bones won’t put up much of a fight.’ Naruto thought to himself with some happiness.
“Alright all the matches have been set let’s go down to the training yard to start these exams.”
The examiners led the students down to the training yard. “Alright the Girls will go first, then the Boys.” Hiro said before continuing. “First match is Ami VS Sakura Haruno.” He called out watching the two girls walk out onto the grassy field.
“The fight ends whenever some yields, is knocked out or we the examiners deem a fight is over and won.” Hiro said seriously as he walked between the two girls. “You may begin on my command.”
He stepped back, “Begin!”
Naruto leaned against the wall and didn’t pay all that much attention to the first round of fights he knew who was gonna win already and wasn’t surprised when those people won.
“Winner of bout one Sakura Haruno.” Hiro proclaimed raising Sakura’s hand in victory.
Naruto didn’t pay attention to the next bout, but he did watch Hinata’s match against Fuki. He knew Hinata was going to cream that girl but he was surprised she did it so quickly. Barely had Hiro said begin before Hinata had the girl knocked out in one shot. Naruto raised an eyebrow when he caught Hinata shyly taking a peak at him.
“What is up with this girl, her emotions are so hard to read, I don’t bloody understand.” Naruto fumed and complained to his permanent resident.
Kurama just laughed at Naruto’s frustration’s he knew exactly what emotions were coming from the Hyuga girl. “You don’t know these emotions because you’ve never felt these emotions.” Kurama replied casually.
Naruto returned just in time for the fifth match Ino Yamanaka VS Kasumi. Again Naruto knew Ino would win. Unlike Kasumi who only was interested in Sasuke, Ino also wanted to be a Kunoichi. So he wasn’t surprised when Ino got Kasumi to yield.
Naruto drifted into himself as he puzzled over Kurama’s words and the emotions he was sensing all around him. He sensed anger, confusion, disgust, excitement, frustration, happiness, nervousness and hate. Some of the other emotions he felt and didn’t know were those of admiration, love and lust that were pouring off of the people around him.
He snapped back to the real world hearing the start of the first semi-final being announced by Hiro. “Next up is the first semi-final Sakura VS Hinata.”
‘Damn I missed the quarters.’ Naruto thought. He again caught Hinata taking a peak at him. “Smile and nod dummy.” Kurama said in his head.
“What! why?” Naruto argued trying to figure what the fox was up to.
“Uhh don’t worry about it. Just give a slight nod of your head… Dummy.” Kurama said with a sigh, even at age twelve the boy was still a dummy, when it came to girls.
Naruto did as Kurama said and slightly nodded his head. His heart almost skipped a beat when he saw the cute little smile on Hinata’s face and his heightened senses were assaulted with the positive emotions that were radiating off of her like heat off of the sun.
“Hmm maybe you’re not such a dummy then.” Kurama sniggered.
“Ohhh shut up, you knew didn’t you? even back then when we started first sensing her following us?” Naruto snapped back, he hated being the butt of Kurama’s private jokes.
“Of course I knew I’ve been alive longer than you… dummy.” Kurama said before roaring with laughter at the angry look on Naruto’s face.
He returned back in time to see Hinata end the fight with a Gentle Fist shot to Sakura’s now disabled right arm. Naruto looked at Sakura’s left arm and saw that it was also disabled and hanging loosely by her side, he watched as she yielded to Hinata.
Naruto smiled as he again caught a blushing Hinata looking at him. This time he braced himself for the assault of emotions.
“Kurama, since you know so much. Why has Hinata’s face got that pinkish tinge to her cheeks?” Naruto asked all seriously.
“She’s blushing, so since she isn’t scowling or hiding her face I’d say she is excited maybe aroused or just happy but from her scent I’d say option one and two and her emotions say option two and three.” Kurama said after giving the matter some thought.
“Kurama that’s just confusing.” Naruto said even though he could follow Kurama’s words concisely.
“Of Course it is all females are confusing.” Kurama chuckled back.
As Naruto had held his private internal conversation Ino had won the second semi-final and was now facing and losing to Hinata in the final. He watched as Hinata pressed her advantage over a stubborn Ino for a couple of minutes before Taki stepped forward and called an end to the match and Hinata the victor.
“This year’s graduating female champion is Hinata Hyuga.” Hiro proclaimed as he passed along the three top female students and passed out a bronze medallion to Sakura, silver for Ino and a gold medallion for Hinata.
“Alright now we will have an hour break before the boy’s tournament will begin.” Hiro said leading the examiners back into the academy building.
The class had returned to the practice field ten minutes before the hour was up. Naruto however hadn’t left and had just readied himself and planned out where he would finish in the tournament.
Waiting for the examiners he recalled his and Kurama’s plan.
“Naruto if the Inuzuka makes it to the semi-final that is where you will throw the fight. If he doesn’t you must throw the final against the Uchiha. Your plans require you to be seen as weak remember.” Kurama warned him for the umpteenth time that day.
“I know I know you don’t have to remind me all day long.” Naruto muttered back angrily.
“Well you almost lost control last time, remember Naruto?” Kurama explained, rolling his eyes as he did.
Naruto snapped back to the real world when he heard his name being called. “The next match will be Shikamaru Nara VS Naruto Uzumaki.” Hiro called out with his boisterous voice.
Naruto stood up and walked to the makeshift combat circle. He smirked hearing Shikamaru grumbling as he walked into the circle. Naruto calmly stood face to face with Shikamaru who was nervously shifting from foot to foot.
“Begin” Hiro called out. Naruto attacked first with a straight left jab to Shikamaru’s jaw, rocking him backwards towards the edge of the circle. Naruto quickly stepped forward grabbed Shikamaru by the collar and threw him onto his back and stamped his right foot down on his chest knocking the breath out of Shikamaru’s chest.
“I yield.” Shikamaru wheezed as he coughed trying to regain his breath.
“The Winner of match eight is Naruto Uzumaki.” Hiro called out, his anger and hate assaulting Naruto’s senses. Naruto turned on his heels and walked away, trying very hard not to strangle the idiot examiner right then and there.
Naruto paid no attention to the other three matches as he focused on his next opponent. He raised his head to see that Kiba had won his match and would face Naruto in the next match.
“The next match is Hitoshi Akori VS Naruto Uzumaki.” Hiro called, he was really getting on Naruto’s nerves.
Hitoshi stepped forward a huge grin plastered all over his face. “I’m so going to crush you Naruto you loner loser.” He boasted, laughing loudly at his own stupidity. Naruto scowled as he walked into the circle to stand face to face with the slightly taller boy. Naruto could feel a new wave of anger, but he was surprised to see it wasn’t aimed at him but at Hitoshi. He looked around to see who was angry with Hitoshi; he was surprised to see it was Hinata. “Sheesh she is weird.” Naruto thought but he still smiled at least he wasn’t the only one pissed off by this idiot.
“Begin” Hiro called out seeing Naruto distracted. Out of the corner of Naruto’s vision he saw Taki scowl sightly before her blank expression returned.
Naruto blocked Hitoshi’s first three blows before Hiroshi left a gap in his attack routine. Naruto took this gap and ran with it. He jabbed with his left, then his right and repeated keeping Hitoshi’s focus on guarding his upper body. He through a slow right punch allowing Hitoshi to grab his hand and he instantly yanked Hitoshi off balance easily side stepping the flailing boy and knocked him out with a roundhouse kick to the back of his head.
“Good show Naruto everybody believes you had to work to win that match even that stupid Inuzuka believes it.” Kurama grinned humorously as Kiba’s overconfidence assaulted the senses of Naruto and Kurama.
Naruto walked back to his earlier spot a small grin on his face as he heard Kurama’s words in his head. “You know I’m not gonna throw this fight easily, I’m gonna make him fucking earn it.” Naruto muttered angrily. “I’m so going to break something, arrogant fuck.” Naruto watched as Sasuke was called up for his semi-final and watched as he quickly and easily knocked out his opponent.
“The next semi-final is Kiba Inuzuka VS Naruto Uzumaki.” Naruto followed Kiba into the combat circle and stood facing him.
“Begin.” Naruto burst forward with a flurry of punches and kicks that had Kiba on the defensive blocking most of Naruto’s strikes. As they neared the bounds of the circle Naruto slowed down the pace before disengaging and jumping backwards to the centre of the circle.
“Come on dog breath you can do better than this, right?” Naruto called to Kiba riling him up. Kiba charged forward recklessly and received Naruto’s foot in his face. He could feel Naruto’s heel breaking his nose.
Naruto could feel his thrust kick smash into Kiba’s face. As he withdrew his foot blood began to flow from Kiba’s injured nose. “Oh that looks painful.” Naruto teased. It was time to throw the fight.
Kiba again charged at Naruto recklessly, like a wild beast Naruto thought. This time Kiba was allowed to tackle Naruto to the floor and soon began raining blows down on his face. Very few of the blows landed on his face as Naruto allowed Kiba to continue raining blow after blow as he waited for one of the examiners to call the match.
It was a couple minutes later and Naruto was beginning to wonder if he would have to yield to throw this fight when Taki stepped forward and called the fight in Kiba’s favour. It was then that Naruto noticed the extreme pleasure Hiro and Mizuki had felt at the sight of him supposedly having the shit beaten out of him. He got up and returned to his spot paying no attention to anything around him as he conversed with Kurama. Nobody noticed Taki slip away into the shadows.
“That was an excellent performance Naruto. Everybody thought you were gonna win that bout when you broke that Inuzuka’s nose.” Kurama said gleefully a large grin spreading across his vulpine face.
The final was as Naruto expected, Sasuke mopped the floor with the injured Kiba who would complain about the broken nose for the next ten or so years. Even as Hiro passed out the gold, silver and bronze medallions to Sasuke, Kiba and Naruto, Kiba was already complaining about his broken nose.
“Return to class in one hour to find out who has graduated.” Mizuki said as he addressed the class. The majority of the class Naruto included went back to the classroom and waited for the examiners to return.
Fifty minutes later Mizuki and Hiro returned with a third and rather fat instructor pushing a trolley with rows of leaf headbands on it.
“When I call your name come up and receive your leaf headband.” Mizuki said flicking the piece of paper in his hand.
‘Something’s up!’ Naruto thought, he couldn’t sense any anger or hatred coming from the two examiners only a sense of expectation and mirth.
“Sasuke Uchiha and lastly Ino Yamanaka.” Mizuki called to a round of high pitched squeals from the girls in the class.
“What the fuck?” Naruto shouted storming to his feet.
“Shut up Naruto. You failed your exams” Hiro shouted rising to his feet, his face red with anger.
“Bullshit! What are you two playing at?” Naruto said angrily.
“Naruto get out.” Hiro shouted spittle flying form his almost foaming lips.
“You will regret this. You will pay for this.” Naruto snarled grabbing his bag and walking out the room slamming the sliding door shut. Naruto walked outside and stopped dead in his tracks. Gathering in the academy courtyard were all the parents of his classmates. They all turned to look at him as he exited the academy building. He was rocked by the sudden flood of anger and hatred that poured from the gathered people like a tidal wave.
‘I’m gonna to kill them all. I’m gonna kill’em all.’ Naruto promised himself over and over again as he skirted around the gathered adults and sat on the swing tied to the only tree in the courtyard.
He watched later as the other members of his class walk out into the courtyard and get swamped by their respective parents. The only person not to get swamped by a parent was Sasuke who Naruto watched skulk away in the shadows.
“It’s a good thing you stuck around Naruto.” Mizuki said from the other side of the tree.
“Why’s that Mizuki sensei?” Naruto asked skeptically.
“Because I may have a way for you to graduate.” Mizuki replied trying to hide the expectation in his voice but failing to hide it emotionally.
“So he was planning something, huh Kurama.” Naruto said in his mindscape while replying to Mizuki. “And what do I have to do to graduate?” He asked of the instructor.
“You have to stealthily retrieve a special scroll called the Scroll of Sealing from the vault in the Hokage Tower and learn one of the Jutsu inscribed inside it.” Mizuki said before continuing. “The vault you’re looking for is in the basement. When you get it meet me in the back hills at this spot.” He said pointing to a spot on the map he had unrolled.
‘So this was your plan’ Naruto thought as he decided what to do next. “Ok if it’s my only option I’ll do it.” Naruto said getting up from the swing and quickly left the courtyard. He never even noticed the arrival of Taki, Iruka and the Third Hokage.
