Chapter Three: Fireflies A/N Lyrics from Fireflies by Owl City
Hikari quickly settled into a routine throughout the next few days. She spent the mornings with her team at the training grounds completing whatever task Kakashi had set for them. Most days she would join Naruto for lunch before heading home, though she had taken to convincing Hinata to come join them as well, which usually meant Neji would show up too, not that she was going to complain. The afternoons were spent playing Shogi with Neji at her place and in the evening she would meditate for an hour or two before bed, she had even manged to get Neji to meditate with her as well. Before she knew it it was the day of Chouji's party, a few days prior Ino had showed up, after a training session, with Sakura is tow to let them know that the party was BYOB but they had to keep it hidden until someone was able to get Lee out of the house. Hikari didn't know who Lee was but apparently he was not to be trusted around alcohol. Neji was sitting in the Hikari's living room waiting for her to get ready before they would go up to the main house to collect Hinata. She checked herself once more in the mirror before heading out to the living room, she looked at him waiting patiently, wearing a pair of form fitting black pants, a simple white button down shirt with the top three buttons left open to reveal a black shirt underneath. “Ready to go?” she asked. Neji glanced over at her she wore a pair of black leggings with a short black skirt and a tight zip up sweater, her hair in a simple pony tail with a couple strands left loose to frame her face. She looked great, but he still wasn't looking forward to this. “As ready, as I'll ever be,” he sighed and stood. “You really don't like these kind of things do you?” she asked him as she retrieved her purse, where she had stashed a bottle of vodka and a bottle of rum. “Not really no, in case you hadn't noticed I don't really have a lot of people skills.” “Sure you do, you just need to relax. Come on let's go, or we'll be late,” she said and grabbed his hand to pull him out the door. She didn't let go until they got in sight of the main house and he didn't pull away either. Hinata was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, in a lilac colored sun dress, they headed off together for Chouji's house. They could hear the music before even opening the door, pretty much everyone had already arrived. When Naruto spotted Hikari he came over, “Great that you guys could all make it, come on Hikari I'll introduce you to everyone,” he said grabbing her hand. Hold on Naruto, at least let me take my sweater off first,” she removed it to reveal a black lace shirt and blood read tube top, with three inch wide gold bracelets on each wrist. She hung it up and allowed Naruto to lead her through the crowd introducing her to everyone they came across, the rest of Neji's team and the rookie nine. Sai, whose first question as was to ask why she was so flat chested at her age, much to Naruto's horror. Naruto then went on to explain that Sai was raised in such a way that he was severely lacking in the social skills department. They then moved on to Kankurou, the brother of the Kazekage, who was in town to help oversee the entrants from Suna. By the time Naruto finished she was feeling slightly overwhelmed, it was just two many new faces at once. She politely excused herself to step out to the to back yard to get some air. She rested her arms on the railing and looked out at the fireflies dancing in the darkness. She began to sing to herself, not picking up on the sound of someone joining her on the patio. You would not believe your eyes If ten million fireflies Lit up the world as I fell asleep 'Cause they'd fill the open air And leave tear drops everywhere You'd think me rude But I would just stand and stare I'd like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems 'Cause I'd get a thousand hugs From ten thousand lightning bugs As they tried to teach me how to dance A foxtrot above my head A sock hop beneath my bed The disco ball is just hanging by a thread I'd like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems Leave my door open just a crack 'Cause I feel like such an insomniac Why do I tire of counting sheep? When I'm far too tired to fall asleep To ten million fireflies I'm weird 'cause I hate goodbyes I got misty eyes as they said farewell But I'll know where several are If my dreams get real bizarre 'Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar I'd like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems I'd like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep 'Cause everything is never as it seems I'd like to make myself believe That planet Earth turns slowly It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep Because my dreams are bursting at the seams. “Fitting,” Neji said coming up beside her, making her jump. Hikari was thankful of the darkness to hide her blush, she had no idea he was there, “You scared me,” she tried to laugh it off. “You're not really one for crowds either are you?” he asked softly. “You caught me, my mother always liked to throw big parties as our house, a constant stream of strangers, it got old pretty fast. I would rather spend the time getting to know others in small groups than to be thrown in with them all at once,” she explained. “It's much nicer out here,” he said. “The company is better too,” she joked, “but I suppose we shouldn't stay out here too long, some of them may start to miss us.” “Let them,” he said stepping closer. “Who knows what they'll say when they realize we're both missing.” His voice dropped low, “They can say whatever they want,” he reached for her hand. Kiba came busting outside, “Now the fun can really start, Sakura just left with Lee,” he said excitedly, hurry up.” “Shall we then?” Hikari asked glad for the interruption, Neji nodded and followed Kiba in. Everyone was gathered around the kitchen table pooling together all the liquor they had brought. Hikari added her two bottles to the growing supply. Naruto looked at her “How did you get your hands on that, did you get Neji to buy them for you?” He blurted out drawing everyone's attention to them. Neji sputtered indignantly, denying that he had anything to do with it, but no one looked like they believed him. Hikari decided to help him out, “I got them myself,” she admitted. “How the fuck did you manage that, there's no way in hell you could pass for over eight-teen,” Kiba demanded, “I”m not buying it.” She looked around at them dumbfounded, could none of them not have thought of this before, one glance told her Shikamaru knew for sure and a couple others had an inkling but most were clueless. She preformed a quick series of hand signs and transformed to look like her aunt, “How have you never thought to do this yourselves?” she asked them before releasing the jutsu. “Shit, the next party is going to be so much better,” Kiba declared. Everyone started grabbing their preferred liquor and began mixing drinks. Neji noticed it didn't take long for most of them, including both Hikari and Hinata, to get a healthy buzz going. They were all making up for lost time now that Lee had left. Naruto, who had somehow managed to drag Sasuke to the party, had challenged Sasuke to a drinking contest. It seemed Naruto could really hold his liquor and he was able to drink Sasuke into submission. It didn't help his disposition however he was still acting like a bastard. Imbibed by the drinks she had consumed, Hinata was no longer acting like her timid self and wandered confidently from group to group socializing. Neji was just trying to pace himself, the last thing he needed was for something to happen to either of the girls at this party, his uncle would have his head. He scanned the room for Hikari and noticed her across the room, she too seemed to have relaxed after a few drinks, and was currently participating in an arm wrestling competition with Kiba. Neji smirked at the look on her face, she was clearly just playing with him, no matter how hard Kiba tried he couldn't get her to budge. Being the niece of the obviously had it's advantages. Finally she took pity on him and ended it, she jumped up and took a celebratory shot. “Fuck no, Rematch,” Kiba demanded, which Hikari was more than happy to oblige. Neji watched her in mild amusement for awhile while Hinata would bring him the occasional drink, which he noticed seemed to be getting stronger the drunker she got. When Hikari tired of beating just about everyone, other than Naruto and Sakura, at arm wrestling she made her way over to the couch that Neji was sitting on. “Are you just going to sit here all night?” she asked as she joined him. “Hmm,” Neji hummed in response, “I don't really feel inclined to move any time soon.” Chouji chose that time to come and join them on the couch, forcing Hikari to move closer to Neji, to the point where she was almost on his lap, Neji had to move his arm to the back of the couch to avoid having it crushed. “Are you guys enjoying the party?” he asked them. Chouji was one of the less inebriated ones thanks to his extra weight. “We're having a great time Chouji,” Hikari answered happily while Neji just nodded, “Thank you again for inviting us.” Chouji stayed and chatted with them for awhile before being dragged off by Ino to see someone on the other side of the room. “I'm going to get another drink, do you want one?” She asked Neji. “I think I'm good, maybe you should slow down though,” he suggested. “Oh I'm fine,” she told him as she stood up, only to have the whole room sway and fall back onto the couch. “Okay, maybe not,” she giggled. Hikari looked up at Neji to find him looking right back at her, torn between amusement and concern. “You have beautiful eyes,” she said softly. “Thank you,” he said awkwardly, cursing the alcohol as the reason he was unable to fight the blush rising to his cheeks. “Time for spin the bottle!” Ino announced, “everyone gather 'round.” once everyone was gathered in a very obscure circle she refreshed everyone on the rules of the game. “Okay everyone, simple and to the point, you can either kiss the person the bottle lands on or you can decline and take a shot instead. Let's do this!” By this time everyone was drunk enough that they didn't really care who they had to kiss, as long as it was a person of the opposite sex, and even then some didn't care. Neji had nearly been molested by Ino before Hikari had pulled her off him, Sasuke and Naruto ended up in a very heated kiss with each other, ever the rivals, neither willing to submit to the other. The party came screeching to a halt when Iruka and Kakashi showed up, sent by the Hokage to make sure things weren't getting out of hand. They sent everyone home making it very clear that come morning there would be hell to pay. On the way home Neji noticed that Hinata actually seemed to be handling the alcohol better than he thought, Hikari on the other hand was weaving all over the road, “Come here,” he told her and grabbed her hand, pulling her to his side and wrapping an arm around her waist to keep her there. Hinata took some gum out of her pocket and handed them each a piece, to cover the smell of booze on their breath for when they reached home. Hiashi was standing out on the porch waiting for them when they returned, the look of anger on his face was more than enough to sober Hinata up. “Make sure she drinks lots of water before she goes to sleep, it will help come morning, you too,” she said softly enough so her Father wouldn't hear. Neji nodded his thanks continued on his way to the guest house with Hikari. Before they could get into the house Hikari vomited into a planter outside next to the door, “Are you okay?” he asked, concerned. She began to nod her head but even that was too much for her and she threw up again. “No,” She said pitifully. Not sure what to do Neji awkwardly rubbed her back until she seemed to be done, “Come on let's get you inside, give me your keys.” She handed them over and braced herself on the wall while he opened the door. He settled her on the couch and went to get her a glass of water as Hinata had suggested. Too buzzed himself to wonder how Hinata would know what to do in the first place. He was able to coax her into drinking a couple of glasses before her eyes began to droop. “No more,” she slurred, “too tired,” she held onto him for support. “Okay let's get you into bed then,” he told her as he led her to the bedroom, he watched her get under the covers and groan. “Get some sleep,” he said gently. “Thank you,” she whispered before passing out cold. Neji was unsure of whether it was a good idea to leave her or not, what if something happened in the middle of the night, of course his uncle would find it inappropriate, but if something happened it would forever weigh on his mind. In the end Neji figure his best bet would be to just sleep on the couch and leave bedroom door open so he could hear her if she needed him. The dawn came too early for the young shinobi of Konoha, nearly all of them were nursing hangovers when they found themselves standing in front of their Hokage. Many of them wore sunglasses, Kiba had ear plugs in, Hikari was leaning unabashedly on Neji's shoulder just to stay upright. This worried Neji more than anyone else, the Hokage had entrusted him with Hikari and look at what happened. “Never in my life have I heard of such behavior. You are the future of this village and this is how you present yourselves, underage drinking and no sense of decency!” She yelled at them, “The Chuunin exams are taking place in under a week, we have guests from all over coming right now, and this type of behavior will only serve to disgrace this village.” “Hokage-sama, if I may,” Tenten spoke up, “Not all of us were under age.” “Oh really I had no idea,” Tsunade said sarcastically, “And please tell me what you were doing other than just standing by and watching minors drink, and perhaps you could clarify for me, how did these minors manage to procure the alcohol in the first place?” she demanded, effectively shutting Tenten up. “Now I have already taken the liberty of speaking with all of your guardians and they have assured me that they will be doling out appropriate punishments, for all of you. Now get out of my office, except you three, Naruto, Sasuke, and Hikari.” Tsunade saw Hikari try an stand of her own accord but it wasn't going well, Tsunade sighed, “You might as well stay Hyuuga, before she falls on her face.” Neji quickly returned to Hikari's side and placed a hand on her shoulder to steady her. She gave him a grateful smile. “Naruto you will report to Iruka for your punishment and Sasuke you will see Kakashi, get going.” That left just Hikari and Neji alone with her, “Explain yourself Hikari.” “It wasn't Neji's fault I swear,” she blurted out in a hurry, and she saw her aunt raise her eyebrows in surprise. “I procured the alcohol by myself, he didn't even know I had it until after we got to the party, and if anything he tried to get me to stop, but I wouldn't listen.” Tsunade stared at them sternly for a minute, “Why am I not surprised? So who did you impersonate this time?” she looked at Hikari expectantly, “Yes I already spoke to your mother and she's told me about your ways of getting alcohol.” “Just some random villager I saw on the way to the store,” she mumbled in response. Tsunade looked at Neji, his nerves were frazzled and it was obvious, she decided to try and soothe some of his worries. “I don't blame you Hyuuga, I know just how pig headed she can be, there was no way she would have listened, I also heard from Hiashi, that you were able to keep your cousin sober as well, from what I hear one of the few people who didn't participate. However that does not excuse you completely, you were still in a house full of drinking minors and as such I believe Hiashi has something for you to do as well. Now Hikari for the next two weeks you will be cleaning the Branch house by yourself, Hiashi will tell you what needs to be done, go home, sleep it off so you can start working tomorrow.” “Yes Aunt Tsunade, it won't happen again,” Hikari promised. “I don't imagine it will, and to make sure of it, in addition to your cleaning duties your training has been canceled for the next two weeks, consider yourself under house arrest you will only leave to attend your cleaning duties and no visitors either.” “Yes, Ma'am,” she hung her head and made her way out of the office with Neji. Everyone else was still waiting outside for them to come out, Hikari explained her punishment, and everyone looked sympathetic. “Hey where's Hinata?” Kiba asked them. Hikari couldn't help but laugh at that, “It seems she is quite the actress, she was able to convince her father that she was stone cold sober, so I guess she's off the hook.” They parted ways, none looking forward to what was in store for them when they got home. “I'm sorry I got you in trouble,” Hikari told Neji. “Don't worry about it,” he told her but she didn't look convinced. “Really I mean it, if not for what you said back there things would be a lot worse right now.” “But if not for me you wouldn't have been in the situation at all.” “If you hadn't been there I would still be where I am now, because Hiashi-sama would have been pissed that I didn't make Hinata-sama leave last night,” he explained to her. Hikari was still convinced it was her fault, but said no more, they had reached her house now anyway. “I guess I'll see you in two weeks,” he told her and turned to walk away. “Neji,” she called out to him and he looked back, “Thank you, for staying with me last night.” he nodded and continued on his way to the main house to report to his uncle. The time passed unbearably slow for Hikari, she quickly learned that the Branch house was no where as nice as the main house. All the women shared one bathroom and all the men shared another, and the men's bathroom was disgusting, of course she has heard that was nothing unusual when it came to men. Still it would take forever to get the smell out of her hair. The bedrooms were small and sparse, just enough to hold a bed, desk and dresser. She had cleaned the main rooms first, Kitchen and Dining hall followed by the bathrooms, that took her almost a week to finish. It was the last day of the first week of her punishment and the seclusion was starting to get to her. It was less about the lack of human interaction and more about just being cooped up for so long. She could deal with being alone but she couldn't deal with being unable to leave her own house, there was only so much she could meditate, and after all the trouble she had already caused, she was unwilling to do any training in the house. The only people she had seen in the last week had been members of the branch house, and even that was seldom, when he was cleaning the common rooms it was always done while they weren't in use, now that she had started on cleaning individual rooms she would occasionally see someone but more likely than not they said nothing to her. She opened another to find the room's occupant in the middle of changing their shirt. “Oh I'm so sorry I'll come back later,” she stuttered out. Though she couldn't help but notice whoever it was had a very nicely built chest. She began to close the door. “Hikari? Is that you?” Neji stopped her. Hikari fought to keep the blush from reaching her face and failed miserably, “Sorry,” she said again, “I didn't mean to disturb you.” “It's okay, you can come in,” he told her, “I just got back from doing my own cleaning,” he told her. He looked her over, she looked terrible, pale with dark circles under her eyes, he could tell she hadn't been sleeping. If she kept up at the rate she was going she would make herself sick before long. “How long does it usually take you to clean a room?” he asked her. “This would have been my last of the day,” she answered keeping her eyes on the floor, she knew how bad she looked and didn't want him to realize just how bad off she was. It was too late for that however, “You look like shit,” Neji said bluntly. “Come in,” he insisted. Once she was inside he closed the door behind her. “Not sleeping well?” he asked and she nodded. Neji directed her to the bed and he began cleaning his room. “Just rest, you look like you need it.” Hikari was just too tired to argue and before she knew it she had fallen asleep. Neji let her sleep for an hour before gently shaking her awake. She looked around dazed for a moment before she remembered where she was, “I'm sorry,” she said yet again. Neji sat beside her on the bed and put a hand over hers, “It's okay, seriously, you looked like you needed the rest. Promise me you will try to get some sleep tonight.” “Yeah,” was her whispered reply, “I should go, I'm supposed to be back at the house for six, sometimes Aunt Tsunade sends someone to make sure I'm there,” she explained. “Okay, look on the bright side you're half way done he told her.” “Don't remind me,” she sighed and was gone. She pushed herself through the second week as best she could, she still had trouble sleeping, and had fallen back into old habits. Her arms itched from the scabs, some days old others only hours. She had just way too much time alone to deal with, and nothing to distract her past. By the end of the second week she had grown lethargic, with no reason for her to leave the house anymore she didn't. Hinata had come by a couple times since her house arrest had ended and she couldn't even bring herself to answer the door. Four days after she was technically free, she was woken in the early evening by a loud insistent knocking at the door. She turned over in bed hoping he would just give up and go away, she could tell just by the sound that it was Neji. He was not to be dissuaded though, “Come on Hikari, open the door. I know you're in there, no one has seen you for days.” After a few more minutes she dragged herself out of bed and to the door, she opened it a crack and peered out at him, “I'm just not feeling well,” she lied, “I'll be fine in a couple of days I promise.” “Let me in?” he said with a pleading look in his eyes that she had never seen before and she just couldn't bring herself to deny him. She took a step back from blocking the door. Neji stepped in a took a good long look at her, if she had looked bad the last time he had seen her it was nothing compared to now, she looked dead on her feet. “What happened to you?” “It's nothing I'm just a little sick,” she insisted and went to take a another step back, she didn't make it, the room spun and she found herself falling, blackness licking at the corners of her vision, she passed out. Neji lunged forward and was able to catch her before she smacked her head on the floor. He picked her up bridal style and carried her to her bed room and put her in bed. He touched a hand to her forehead and found no fever, no cold sweat, nothing that obvious that pointed at her being sick other than the lack of color to her skin. He went to fetch a bottle of water from the kitchen thinking she could use it when she woke up. He pulled up a chair and stationed himself next to the bed. Internally he was weighing the pros and cons of contacting Tsunade-sama about her situation. In the end he decided against it, for now at least. If Hikari wanted her to know she would have sought her out before now, whatever was wrong her would find out first and make an informed decision from there. He raised a hand to run it through his hair and that was when he noticed the blood on his sleeve. His eyes widened in concern, he knew he didn't have any current injuries at the moment, so it had to have come from Hikari. Why wouldn't she have said something if she was hurt, a quick once over and he could not see any obvious wounds, he had to take a closer look, he raised one of her arms, intent on finding the source of the blood. He found her armband to be damp, bringing his hand away he found it covered in blood, he had found the source. Neji hurried to the bathroom and grabbed a first aid kit before returning to the room. He removed the arm band and surveyed the damage. The wounds were self inflicted he could tell that much, that answered the question as to why she hadn't called Tsunade-sama for help, more than likely she didn't want anyone to know. He fought down the urge to call for help once more, he would wait until she woke up to talk to her first. He gently cleaned the blood away, discovering in the process that none of the wounds were too deep, it was just the shear number of them that had caused the large amount of blood loss, over a number of days no doubt. With the blood wiped away he sanitized the gashes, causing her to groan in her sleep. He took notice of older scars, possibly years old. He wrapped her arm in gauze before checking her other arm, only to find the same thing, he repeated the process a second time before checking for any other wounds, finding none he settled back into the chair to wait for her to regain consciousness. Why Hikari? Everything was dark, she could her the voice of Aki, her mother's boyfriend, soft and dangerous, footsteps approaching, the smell of beer. She shot up in bed the scream dying on her lips as she realized she wasn't back home with her mother, but in her room in the Hyuuga guest house. Not in the country far from the closest neighbor, but in Konoha. “You're awake,” Neji said from his chair next to her causing her to jump. “Neji, what are you doing here?” she asked as she tried to remember what had happened. “You don't remember?” he asked sounding concerned, “I came to check on you, you passed out, I didn't want to leave alone.” Hikari avoided looking at him, choosing instead to stare down at her hands. As her eyes adjusted to the darkness she noticed that her arms had been wrapped up. She choked on a sob, “Please don't tell anyone,” she begged him. “I swear I won't do it again, I promise.” He moved to sit next to her on the bed and took one of her hands in both of his. “If I do this for you, I need you to talk to me, I need to be able to help you.” He did his best to keep his voice calm and comforting, when all he wanted to do was scream and yell demand answers. He didn't want to scare her and make her withdraw from him the way she had withdrawn from the world. “Why did you do this to yourself?” She didn't want to tell him, she didn't want to tell anyone, she was ashamed. Yet she knew that she had to give him something if she wanted him to keep his silence. He hadn't immediately gone to her aunt, he had waited to see what she had to say first, so that was something at least. She took a deep breath, “I just couldn't take it anymore, not being able to leave this place, no one to talk to, it was overwhelming,” she tried to explain without giving too much away. “There has to be more to it than that,” he gently prodded. “You have old scars, this isn't your first time.” She still refused to look at him, Neji sighed and placed a hand under her chin, gently raising her head, “Please look at me.” When she finally did he saw the tears in her eyes and his heart ached for her. He decided to try another tactic, one that could possibly get her to trust him with whatever secret she carried with her that would drive her to this, but the cost would be high, if she agreed he would be telling her things he had never told anyone before. “I'll tell you what, if you be honest with me, I will be honest with you, you can ask me anything you want and I will answer it okay?” Hikari was silent while she considered his offer. There were only two other people who knew everything she had been through, if only she had a way to reach them she would have, as it was now she was utterly alone, she knew that she needed at least one person that she could open up to, if she didn't things would only get worse. Maybe Neji really could be that person. Slowly she nodded, taking a deep breath she began to tell him of her childhood. Her mother had left Konoha shortly after getting married to childhood sweetheart. They found a small house in the country with a lake on the property, a perfect place to raise a family. Less than a year later she was pregnant with Hikari, it was a hard pregnancy and an even harder labor, the doctor told them it would be unlikely for them to have anymore children, but they were fine with that, they had a beautiful, healthy, baby girl. The first four years of her live were full of happiness, her father taught her to swim, her Aunt and surrogate Uncles would visit often, spoiling her with gifts. Just months after her fourth birthday their perfect little family would suffer their first blow. He was on his way back from the near by town one night when he was attacked by bandits, he never made it home. It was hard but they still had the support of their extended family and they managed. After a few years her mother met someone new, a man named Aki, he seemed perfect doting on Hikari, taking them on trips on around the country, never passing up the chance to spoil them, but it didn't last. She was nine the first time he came into her room at night. They had been having a party downstairs, her mother had been shit faced drunk, she didn't even notice that he had left the room and failed to return for over an hour. Hikari dissolved into tears, she couldn't continue. Neji sat there with her just holding her hand, after everything she had just told him, he wasn't sure she would appreciate any more than that. Slowly her tears abated, “It went on for years, before my Uncle threatened him and he left.” “Jiraiya?” Neji asked for clarification. Hikari shook her head, “No my other Uncle,” she looked apprehensive for a moment, “I can't say anymore than that, it's not just my secret to tell,” she explained. Neji nodded, he would give her that much, she had already told him more than he figured she had told anyone else in a long time, now it would be his turn to share, “Alright, what do you want to know about me?” he asked in an effort to get her mind off things. Hikari wiped away her tears and took a deep breath, “Explain the distinction to me,” she asked, “between the Branch house and the Main house.” And so he told her what she wanted to know, how it was the duty of the Branch house to protect the Main family. He told her about his Father, being Hiashi's twin brother, how just a few minutes would make all the difference in the lives of the two brothers. He told her of Hinata's kidnapping and his father's sacrifice. He explained that he felt no animosity toward Hinata, for she truly was a gentle soul, but her father had always gone out of his way to make his life a living hell. By the end of it Hikari was in tears again, but he wasn't quite sure why, “What's wrong?” he asked her and was taken aback when she threw herself into him arms. “It's just not fair,” she cried, “why must people be so cruel, and to their own flesh and blood too?” Neji rubbed her back trying to calm her, he had never thought she would take it so hard, it wasn't like it affected her after all, the only other person to ever react so strongly before was Naruto, years ago. But that had been the moment that had changed his life for the better. It didn't change the way his uncle treated him but it had changed the dynamic of his relationship with his cousin, and it had changed his outlook on life. Before he knew what had happened Hikari had stilled in his arms, she had fallen asleep again. He tried to get her to lay back down but she had her hands fisted in his shirt and she wasn't letting go without a fight. Decided that it wasn't worth waking her up, he laid down with her in his arms, her head resting on his chest, and before long he was asleep too.
