She is walking through a ruined village. All around her, there is rubble and an eerie sense of disquiet. She turns the corner and steps into a vibrant, thriving market. There is something she needs to find.
A blond shopkeeper offers her a flower but she turns it down. It’s not what she’s looking for – no, who. She is looking for a person. The crowd jostles her and she winces, struggling to move forward. She feels the eyes of the shopkeeper on her back. A shop suddenly looms in front of her and her fingers brush the doorknob. The door opens, soundlessly and she is suddenly inside. Sasuke sits at a table, his black hair sticking up in the back and his eyes dark. The white of his shirt and the blue of his pants stand out starkly in the light. She suddenly feels small and the world looms above her, a forest of chairs and tables. She is little bigger than a dormouse now. He stares at her, eye to eye, and holds out a hand the same size as her own. He has shrunk, too, or the world has grown around them. “I need you.” She happily takes his hand and he leaps through the window with her, onto a sunny road which winds and twists and wobbles through the country. There is nowhere else she’d rather be than right here, she thinks. A sudden chill creeps through her and she notices the sun is setting. It is getting darker very fast and they quicken their pace. Ahead, she sees a bridge and, suddenly, she doesn’t want to be here anymore. She wants to stop. There’s something bad about to happen. “Just a little further,” he insists, “We can rest on the other side.” The sky ripples with lightning and thunder drums through every bone in her body. “No,” she says, shaking her head. “We need to go back.” He pulls her close, roughly, and kisses her, keeps kissing her as he breathes, “Just a little more. I need you.” Again, lightning splits the pitch-dark sky and the clouds burst with cold rain. It drenches them, chilling them to the core, and she can see her breath even as his kisses trail hungrily down her neck. His lips are like ice against her skin. She shouldn’t let him do this. She wants him to stop and turn back. Behind them, the meadow is sunny and bright, and the shopkeeper with the flower is standing there, still holding out a flower. “I need you,” Sasuke repeats, one hand behind her back as he kisses her passionately. The other hand works its way into her hair and then she is tipping backwards, the violent sky encompassing her vision. His teeth graze her right collarbone, teasingly, and he kisses her there. She moans. It feels like she’s flying, but she’s only being pulled towards the bridge, trapped in his arms and she is suddenly so scared, so very scared. Stop it! Stop it! Stop! STOP! He bites down hard and blood gushes from the wound. She screams and hits him, but he does not let go of her. He merely smiles cruelly, the Sharingan burning through her like acid. “I have no further use for you,” he says, licking her blood off his lips. “Forget me.” She hits the ground hard, the blood still seeping from her in waves, and she weeps as he melts into the shadows. Someone approaches then. It’s the shopkeeper. He holds out the flower to her. It’s a Forget-Me-Not. Karin wakes. There is a vase of flowers in the window. They are small and blue – Forget-Me-Not, she thinks. “Huh, that’s funny.” The pink-haired nurse looks at her curiously. “What’s funny?” “I dreamed about a flower like that,” she replies. There’s a dull ache in her skull when she thinks about it. “And there it is. How funny is that?” “Do you remember anything else about your dream?” the nurse asks. Karin winces as the scar in her chest throbs painfully. “I’m not sure. It all seems blurred now.” “Was it the bridge again?” the nurse asks gently. There was a bridge, she thinks and she winces again, gingerly pressing a hand to her temple. “I think so. There was a storm and blood... I... I don’t remember.” “There, there,” the nurse says, smiling kindly. “It was just a nightmare.” Karin frowns, her other hand twisting the sheets. “Not all of it. Some of it was real.” She pauses and adds, “He really did leave me to die, didn’t he?” The nurse doesn’t say anything. “Will I... you know, will I ever forget this?” Karin asks. She wants to, she really does. His betrayal hurts. But then again, she thinks bitterly, he really never did care for her, did he? The nurse leans forward and clasps her hands in her own. She stares directly into her eyes and says, “Karin, you must remember what really happened. You need to remember.” A sharp, stabbing pain bursts through her head and she cries out, clutching her head. The nurse’s hands touch her and she shrieks as the pain worsens, shying away. She can see the ghostly afterimage of the Mangekyou Sharingan burned on the back of her eyelids, pulsing in time with each lance of pain, and it is all she can do to curl in on herself and cry until sleep claims her again.Inoichi’s expression is tersely drawn when he returns.
“How bad is it?” Ibiki asks, crossing his arms. He suspects he will not like the answer. “Bad,” Inoichi replies. “It’ll take some time. It’s not like before. It’s much more complex and layered. The good news is that she’s a fighter and is still hanging in there.” Ibiki grunts. “Do you think she actually has anything useful?” “She knows something,” Inoichi hesitates and adds, “It has to be something important. Why waste the energy to try and destroy it?” “Maybe it’s to keep us busy barking up the wrong tree,” Ibiki says, dryly. “It’s not my call,” Inoichi replies, “But whatever it is she knows, it’s something she thinks is worth fighting for.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
