--------------------------------- It was the dead of the night and the air was tinged in the smell of blood and destruction. He had to protect his son and wife from danger and yet his responsibility to the village itself was driving him to jump into the middle of the fray. Tears of joy that was uncharacteristic in the situation spilled from his eyes; he was a father. Yet the joy was short lived as his heart urged him to protect those who were close to him. It was a long hard battle with himself as he approached the Kyuubi no Kitsune, knowing what he had to do. Even with the menacing form of Gamabunta beneath his feat it paled in comparison to the hatred and volatile chakra of the nine tailed beast in front of him. Time stalled as he sealed his sadness into the back of his heart and proceeded with that he knew he needed to do. Even though he was the Yondaime Hokage of Konoha and an expert in seals his emotions were battling with his decision. His heart breaking when he knowingly sacrificed himself in order to protect his son and yet his single most happy memory now the last he will experience. Never to know his son and never to know the joys of being a father... A gentle touch on soft cheeks, already marked with the tainted chakra of the Kyuubi no Kitsune. Tears flowing freely as he whispered his last words. 'I love you Naruto, make me proud.' His tears staining the cheeks of his son in his sadness as his last wish would never be fulfilled... ---------------------------------- Minato started awake; heart beating wildly in his chest as his dream burned a memory onto his soul. Shaking his head to clear it he tentatively got up and looked at the clock it was still too early to get up and yet he knew he would not be able to fall back asleep. Sighing Minato pulled on a loose fitting shirt over his sleep pants and headed out into the traditional garden. Blue eyes observing the koi pond as the fish lazily swam in circles and under the red bridge. He sighed, the air was cool and crisp and had a definite chill to it. The colder seasons were going to be upon them soon. His mind kept drifting back to his dream and it left him feeling emotions that he did not enjoy showing at all. It wasn't the fist time he had this specific dream and not first time that he wondered what it meant. But for the first time ever he felt such a strong connection to it that it was almost as if it was he himself that lived through that experience. "Nii-san, breakfast is almost ready." Minato was startled from his thoughts as Kakashi hugged him from behind and dragged him into the house. Minato chuckled as he broke free to get ready before heading to breakfast. His first day at the University and he was already shacking with anticipation at seeing the sensei that captured his heart and caused him concern too. Dressed in black jeans and a turtle neck shirt of the same colour he headed downstairs and seated himself at the breakfast table. "My oh my Mina-kun who are you trying to impress." His mother cooed as she saw her oldest son come into the kitchen, a smile on her face as she wiped at the tears in her eyes. Her boy was growing up fast. Minato on the other hand stuttered and flushed under his mother's scrutiny and his father's amusement. "N-n-no o-o-ne!" He yelled and she only let out a chuckle. Before putting the freshly made breakfast on the table and seated herself next to her husband as she gave a kiss on the foreheads of both her sons. "Well whoever he or she is, be nice to them Minato. I want to meet them too eventually." She smiled brightly and watched as her son blushed and hid his beautiful eyes behind long blond bangs. Breakfast was always a lively affair in the Namikaze household and this morning was no exception. "Bye Kashi, I'll see you later!" He yelled as he got ready to head to the train station. It was only a ten minute train ride to the university and he didn't want to be late. So he left an entire hour early; hopefully he could find Naruto-sensei in class early as well and talk to him. Hugging his coat close to him and frowned at it. It was one he designed himself; almost a trench coat because of its length but odd as it was white with red flames at the bottom. It was made of a lighter material so it was easily affected by the wind and often billowed around him in a splay of white and red. 'Damn, why are University campuses always so complicated!' He thought to himself as he tried to find lecture theatre six. After ten minutes of being utterly lost he finally found it on the second floor of the largest building. Sneaking tentatively through the doors. It was a large room that was clearly a art classroom; it smelled of paint and turpentine that brought out a smell of comfort for the younger Namikaze. He saw many uncovered and covered canvases alike and each one was in front of a stool. But that was not what drew his attention, in the very front and next to the podium and teacher's desk was another canvas but this one was occupied by who he had been hoping to see. Naruto was painting with such an intensity that Minato was afraid to make a sound so he just watched and waited for the professor to notice him first. ~ Naruto hummed as he worked. Usually he was never in class this early but a nagging feeling had made him get up early and head towards his lecture theatre to work on an unfinished piece that he felt needed to be finished today. It was Jiraiya's death day today and Naruto had started a memorial painting of his old sensei; long white hair splayed about a peaceful face and as closed eyes observed nothing yet Jiraiya was laying in a bed of red and white rose petals and a few whole roses of black. In his pale hands was a bouquet of fiery orange roses and a few black petals tucked in-between the colours. Ero-Sennin never had a proper burial and no one found his body so Naruto decided to work on an image of the perfect last moment that his sensei deserved. His paintbrush was lovingly painting over the features and doing the last of the touch ups, a bit of red here and a bit of black there and not to forget Jiraiya's distinctive red tear marks. His last stroke was interrupted as Naruto for the first time noticed a presence in the room and immediately felt his old instincts kick in. Without a second thought the sharp end of the brush was launched as a well placed kunai; blue eyes flashing towards the source of the disturbance. The sound of a canvas ripping and a startled yelp immediately made Naruto's eyes flash towards the sound. Blue eyes widening as he stared at Namikaze Minato; the paint brush buried in un unused canvas mere millimetres from Minato's face. Naruto sucked in a breath and flew from his stool and rushed towards his student. "I'm sorry, are you alright?" He asked frantically as he searched for any wounds he may have caused. Minato merely gave a nervous chuckle and laid trembling hand on Naruto's smaller shoulders. "I-I-'m alright. Just remind me to never startle you again." Minato said jokingly and Naruto felt guilty for what he did. The young Namikaze was in shock and Naruto noticed it and so with careful hands he led Minato towards his desk and sat him down before rummaging through the drawers until he found what he was looking for. "Here, sugar helps to calm you down." Naruto said as he held out a bar of chocolate, watching tentatively as Minato sighed and began nibbling on the sweet. Naruto observed his father for a long while before moving a few feet away to clean up his work station; ears finely tuned for any other sound that could pose a threat. "Naruto-sensei; I'm sorry I startled you." Minato's voice sounded guilty and Naruto turned blue eyes towards his student. "No need to apologize; I'm sorry. I really should get out of my old habit of thinking every one is out to kill me." Naruto confessed before grabbing a chocolate himself. Really, he was in shock himself after all he had almost killed his father with the wrong end of a brush. He wanted so much to scowl at Kyuubi who laughing his head off at the situation. "Did something happen to make you like this?" A gentle voice asked and Naruto turned blue eyes on blue and gave a small sad nod. "You could say that." He whispered before looking at the clock on the wall. It was almost time to start and with that he scribbled a few notes in his notebook and looked toward Minato. The young Namikaze was merely observing the situation with warm blue eyes and a gentle smile. "Take a seat Minato-kun class is starting soon." Naruto said gently before pointing to the seat closest to his own easel. Just as Minato took his seat the bell rang and the other six students of his class spilled into the classroom and took up their seats. Naruto waited until the door closed behind the last student before stepping up onto the podium. "Alright, welcome to the second semester. As you all know only the most talented end up in this class and I will be your teacher. It is two weeks into the semester but there are a few new faces so I'll explain how this class works. Art is often taught in two different phases; theory and practical. I'll tell you now, I don't bother with theory at all. This is a class where you have freedom of expression and I teach each student individually as I feel like it. I work on your strengths and with that your weaknesses will fade. "There is no restrictions in my class. You may do whatever medium you wish; you may walk around and observe other students and even I will sometimes work on my own pieces. But I warn you now; you will work in this class and if you wish not to then I will simply assign you to another professor with a much more boring outlook on university life. "With that said welcome to the specialized art class; enjoy yourselves and get to work." With that Naruto turned and began making his rounds; stopping at Minato's easel and looking the younger man in the eyes. "You doing ok?" He asked and Minato gave bashful nod of his head. A slight red blush across his cheeks. Naruto gave a chuckle before heading towards the back of the classroom and placing a collection of charcoal and pencils in front of Minato as he handed him a A2 sketch book. "Don't worry about anything. Just enjoy yourself. Remember what I told you last night, just let it flow. I don't judge any work and I do not criticize." Naruto said before leaving again to walk through the class and eventually returned to his own easel to sign his name and set it aside to start on a quick sketch. -------------------------------------------------- Minato was stuck on trying to find a good subject to sketch when a flash from his dream caught his interest. Yes, he knew what he was going to sketch and his mind took him away once again to that time where the nine tailed demon fox decided to attack an innocent village. His sketches were usually sloppy and undefined but as his mind drifted to his dream the more clear his drawing became the more lifelike it appeared. He barely even heard the bell as it signalled the end of the class but immediately looked up as a soft touch brushed against his shoulders. "That's outstanding Minato-kun. I noticed you were so caught up that you didn't realize the time. Well it's time for your next lecture but if you really wish to finish this master piece I'll be here until late in the afternoon." Minato blushed and began packing up his things as he headed out the door; head bowed as he whispered a thank you and practically ran towards his next class. He was definitely going to finish that sketch today even if it took him the entire night as well. After the few encouraging words from Naruto-sensei he really needed to finish it. Not only that, the look in Naruto's eyes were not only encouraging but the nostalgia in them was fascinating to him as if Naruto knew his sketch and wanted to see it finished. ~ Naruto observed Minato's sketch and felt his heart skip a beat. Did he remember that night? Naruto thought to himself. The image that of Kyuubi attacking the village and Gamabunta not far away with the back of the Yondaime Hokage visible. "For his sake I hope he doesn't remember. It could hurt him." Naruto said to himself only to be berated by Kyuubi. "You don't know that. This means that he might know who you are to him Naruto. Isn't that what you always wanted?" Naruto sighed and sat down at his easel. Eyes trained on Jiraiya's peaceful face. He really needed to do something for his now long dead sensei. Completely ignoring Kyuubi he traced the gentle features as he talked to himself. "I should present this to Gamabunta tonight, they would appreciate it." The question Kyuubi asked left him hollow; would he really wish Minato the heart ache just so that the man would know what he meant to Naruto? Honestly the Kyuubi container was not sure he wanted that. He would rather spare Minato the pain and burden of knowing and yet for once Naruto felt his heart break all over again. He wanted someone to be with and share love with; he wanted to be with his father. Was it wrong? Was it so wrong that he wanted to be with his father? Even if he had noticed the instant attraction between them. ----------------------------------------- Later that day Naruto started from his work as a knock sounded on his door. He yelled a enthusiastic 'enter' and waited for the person to enter. Naruto smiled as he watched Minato walk into the classroom, looking apprehensive and excited at the same time. Naruto gave a chuckle as he watched the Namikaze's reactions. "Calm down Minato-kun, you're not in trouble. Please take a seat and finish your art work; I'd be delighted if I saw it finished." Naruto pointed to Minato's easel where everything was as he left it in the morning. He nodded and set to work, welcoming the companionable silence that drifted through the room. It was as if time stopped just for the two of them and nothing could get in the way of their contentment. Minato felt himself tiring as his eyes began to droop and immediately his eyes went towards Naruto, who was at his desk clearly asleep on all the papers scattered haphazardly on his desk. "Naruto-sensei? Wake up." Minato pleaded as he gently shook the professor by his shoulders. Chuckling when he heard a quiet. "5 more minutes, please Ero-sennin. I don't want to see Gamabunta today." Minato felt a jolt of nostalgia travel through him but was stopped from his reverie when Naruto lifted his head and blue eyes stared into his. "Minato-kun, what's going on?" Naruto asked sleepily; head cocking to side adorably as he inquired. "It's almost eight o'clock Naru-chan. I think it's time we left." Naruto seemed to blanche at the time and nodded; getting his things together as he grabbed his car keys; the painting tucked underneath his arm. Turning to Minato he said; "Considering I fell asleep and you've worked so hard today. I'll treat you Ramen and then take you home." Minato was stunned for a second, blushing when the angel in front of him offered to take him out for his favourite food and drive him home? Was he dreaming as well? "Come, Minato-kun. I promise I don't bite; well unless you want me to." Naruto chuckled as he grabbed the taller man by the wrist and dragged him towards the staff parking lot. --------------------------------------------- --------------------------------- Thanks for the read and drop a review, I love all those who do and you get milk and cookies.
