Ch3: Crossing of Paths
Naruto’s phone blared to life against his ear startling him awake and sending him flying from his bed face first into the floor. He struggled trying to free himself from the suffocating cocoon of blankets that had engulfed him in his fall, trying his hardest to reach the offending cell that continued to blare the hamster dance. When he finally got a hand free he snatched the phone from his pillow and snapped it open. “What the hell?!” He had meant to yell at the person on the other end of the line but his voice came out as more of a groan of pain than anything remotely intimidating. Immediately after he yelled into the phone a sing song voice rang through to him in a fast paced rant of excitement that Naruto could barely follow. All he got from the other person was that someone was amazing and that he was so lucky for some odd reason. “Who the hell is this?” He asked in a confused and subdued tone. “It’s me, Sakura. And you know, you curse a lot in the morning.” Naruto held the phone out as if it had just sprouted arms and legs, and glared at the peculiar object. After his eyes adjusted to the blinding light of the cell he was able to read the time against the darkness of his room. “Sakura-chan… 3am doesn’t count as the morning unless you’re nocturnal.” “Technically A.M stands for ante meridian meaning “before mid day” so…” “Alright, alright I get it. I’m up any ways so why the unwarranted wakeup call?” “I met the roommate.” She was on the edge of her seat anticipating her friend’s reaction but all she got in response was confused silence and then an equally confused question. “Is that some kind of code?” “Oh. Come. On!” She annunciated each word in exasperation as she dragged her hand against her face. “Remember Sai’s roommate?” she asked him in a way that made him wonder if he somehow reverted back into a third grader. “Yes…” He replied letting the word roll of his tongue dripping with annoyance. “I met him.” She continued, ignoring the biting tone in his voice. “Oh…” Naruto sat there in the darkness of his room a moment when all of a sudden a light went off. “Oh! You saw the abusive housewife? What was he like?” “Gorgeous! He was tall, dark haired, and handsome! And his voice… ugh, it was like honey.” Her voice was like a moan of delight as she rattled off each detail of the raven haired man. And after she listed off all the things that made the other man ‘gorgeous’, Naruto came to a conclusion. “You didn’t pay any attention to his personality, did you?” he laughed at his friends swooning and wondered what it was about looks that made a woman deaf. And people say men ignore what comes out of people’s mouths. “Yes actually I did. He is a wee bit aggressive, but that’s all.” “Why is it I don’t believe you? You sound like a girlfriend making up excuses for her abusive lover.” “Wait… is he abusive?” worry found its way into his voice as he thought of the likely possibility. “Psssh no. He only locked Sai in a closet, but I mean we’ve done that before too.” Naruto laughed. “It was either that or death by your hands. No man lives through calling you an ugly small chested hag and billboard brow in one day.” “Yeah he really knows how to compliment a lady huh? But you’re forgetting his numerous dickless comments that landed you in one of my headlocks.” “Now that was when we first met! How else was I suppose to react to that? I didn’t even know that that’s how he is, unlike someone.” “Oh please you still look like you want to kill him when he brings up your manhood even now, and it’s been what, five years?” “Six. I have been struggling to keep faith in my skills as a man for six years now.” He said wincing at the memory of all of Sai’s various comments. “Oh come on Naruto. We all know you are all that is man; why else would you be our favorite model? Besides I think Sai is the one who is lacking because he was very determined to try and showcase your ‘nonexistent’ manhood in that painting. Despite the aesthetic of that view I am glad you won in the say of what pose you used.” She joked remembering the clearly taunting pose that Naruto had gone with, probably just to smite Sai for another one of his comments. “You saw it?” He groaned. “I forgot he had that damn thing on the wall…. When I get over there I’m taking it down.” “No! You can’t.” Sakura panicked. Just the thought of the painting being taken down and stored away in Sai’s room, where she would never again be able to see it, set her on edge. But there was no way to convince Naruto not to do it, once he set his mind on something it was near impossible to stop him unless you were a demon from hell. ‘Wait a second.’ she thought. ‘A demon from hell…’ “Even if you tried he won’t let you.” She said but this time her voice was confident, she had an ace up her sleeve. There was still one person who could protect that painting, one person who wouldn’t let anyone touch it, well that is unless they wanted to end up bound and gagged in a closet. “What are you talking about? Sai has already had his fun; he will take it down if I talk to him about it.” Naruto was sure he had found a way around everything and to get rid of that embarrassing piece of paper. But he wasn’t aware of what Sakura knew, and she wasn’t about to let it slip and give him any chance to trump her card. “Well we’ll see what he will do.” Her words hinted to her scheme but Naruto remained ignorant as she quickly hung up leaving him staring in confusion as the words ‘call ended’ shone brightly in his face. “This is one fight you won’t win Naruto.” She said completely confident that that beautiful demon wouldn’t let anyone near his painting. Not even the one in it. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Naruto flipped his phone closed and lay back on his bed closing his eyes to sleep, but as the time flew by on that tiny illuminate screen he grew more and more restless. It was when that screen read 5:30 that he let a stream of frustrated curses pass through his lips. “I hope that pretty bastard is having as shitty of a morning as I am.” He growled as he gave up and marched toward his kitchen for a desperately needed bowl of ramen. While he ate his ramen he continued to curse the stranger who had ruined his morning. Even though he knew Sakura was really to blame, Naruto never wanted to wish a bad day on her. If she had a bad day than he would be the punching bag for all her frustrations, so instead he decided to blame the one who led to her calling, the angry housewife. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sasuke tossed and turned on his bed trying to get comfortable as his clock lights continued to flaunt the time in his face. It was 5:30 when he had first woken up from his nightmare, a horrid dream where a demon strangled him with what appeared to be ramen noodles. The idea of such a nightmare was ridiculous, but somehow it was scary enough for Sasuke to fall out of his bed. He had hit the floor with a loud thud knocking the wind out of him from where his back collided with the wooden surface. But he recovered quickly, dusting himself off, and remounted the bed in determination to kill the man in his dreams as soon as he fell back asleep. But sleep never came. It was now 6 o’clock yet he was nowhere near being able to sleep, it was like something was keeping him awake to ruin his morning and consequently his day. Sasuke cursed as he collected the sheets he had kicked off his bed in his earlier struggle for comfort, and laid them on his bed deciding he would take care of them later. He whispered complaints to himself all the way down the hall until he saw that familiar face staring off in the distance. He calmed instantly. And as he passed the boy on his way to the kitchen to start a kettle of tea and fix an egg or two, he grinned ever so slightly. He walked back to the living room and turned on the news, sneaking another peek at the man relaxing at his side, and returned to the kitchen to monitor his eggs. When they were all done and nestled between two croissant halves he poured a cup of tea and sat watching the news, ever aware of the blond in the corner of his eye. Sasuke ate his food in peace thinking that maybe his day wasn’t so bad after all. It was when he was all finished and had cleaned up that he noticed how many times he looked at that painting. Sasuke was starting to get concerned. When did he begin to look forward to seeing that face in the morning? It was a painting for Peat’s sakes! It wasn’t a real person and even if it was, he still wouldn’t see a reason for being so attached to a complete stranger. And one of Sai’s friends at that. Sasuke groaned at how pathetic he must seem and glared at the art work that had caused him to act in such a way. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Naruto ran out of his apartment cursing the fact that he had somehow lost track of time and would be late for work despite being up earlier than usual. He shot passed everyone on the street dodging them with quick twists and turns as he looked back and forth between his watch and the people in front of him. He was sooo going to be late for work again, and he just wished that Baa-chan wasn’t in her office yet or else she’d mount his head on her wall for not listening to her warnings. He had come in late two times last week on accident because he had overslept when working on a project for their latest contract. When she caught wind between her bottles of sake that he had been late twice, she called him in and threatened his life. Saying that if he was ever late again they would never find his body. And now ironically enough he was going to be late for waking up too early. Naruto bounded up the stairs of the modern building throwing a slightly panicked grin at the guard standing by the door. The guard rolled his eyes knowingly but waved his hand at him in greeting and farewell. Naruto cringed at the double meaning knowing that it meant Baa-chan was waiting for him. Once inside the elevator he paced its length contemplating what his next move would be. There was no way the ex doctor would believe he was sick or was in an accident, so what else did that leave him? He was beginning to fully panic when the elevator doors slid open. He was stunned seeing his friend Shikamaru waiting for him with a tray of coffee in his hands that he ‘quickly’ placed in Naruto’s. Shikamaru was the kind of guy who didn’t like doing anything he considered troublesome. So though he was still acting pretty calm, Naruto could clearly see that he was rushing and slightly worried for his knuckleheaded friend. “Just say you were getting coffee. She is waiting for you.” Naruto was at first shocked by the idea of his friend actually going through effort for him but when the man’s eyes narrowed at him he patted his coworkers shoulder in thanks. “I owe you one man.” He said as he calmed himself and strode into Tsunade’s office with coffee and alibi in hand. “Just remember that when we all go for lunch. Chouji’s coming with today.” Naruto shuttered at the last part as he entered the room. He could just barely make out the dark half hearted chuckle of his friend as the door closed behind him. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> “Where the hell have you been?!” the blond woman yelled from behind her desk slamming her bottle down as she glared daggers at the man in front of her. “And don’t even give me any crap that you were out getting coffee. I know for a fact that Shikamaru had that planned.” Naruto shifted under her gaze trying to keep up his grin of innocence. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. I went out of my way to get this for you and everyone else, and you accuse me of such an awful thing? And not only me but my friend and coworker too. That’s too cruel Baa-chan.” “I thought I already told you not to call me that you twerp. And don’t get all melodramatic on me, I know you didn’t get everyone coffee despite your good nature. So give it up. Besides I have a proposition for you to make up for you being tardy yet again.” Her eyes softened saying she had forgiven him, but not a moment later they curved up with a demonic grin making Naruto nervous. “Whu-what is it? This proposition?” He asked unsure if he wanted to know; that smile was a wee bit eerie. “Well we have a big project coming up with another company. They are branching out and need us to help plan the design for their new building representing their step towards going green. It is a high stakes project.” “And so what does that have to do with me?” He wasn’t quite sure what role he played in this ‘high stakes deal’ and was really confused as to why she was even telling him all of this. What did it have to do with him being late, and she still hadn’t told him her idea to save his hide. “Well since you have this unbelievable ability to always pull through and make amazing things happen, we have decided to make you the project leader.” “Eh? But I’ve only been…” “I am well aware of how long you have been here but you are the best we have and despite the fact you are capable of single handedly giving me an ulcer, I have faith in you. It’s about time you got promoted Naruto.” Naruto looked at her in shock. Her hands folded together under her chin supporting the expectant grin on her face as she watched emotions fly over the expressive blond. He put the coffee down on her table, his face switching to a clam one after all the other emotions faded away, and bowed to her before leaving the room. She was shocked by how calm he was until she heard him scream from behind her door. “Yes! This is the best day ever!” He emphasized the last words with all the energy in his body and the whole building froze to listen. She grinned as she imagined the blond pulling his comatose friend into a chokehold, and bouncing around the office grinning away completely unaware of his friend’s suffering. He had worked so hard for this. She knew he was late all those days because of the many all nighters he had to have pulled to seal the deal with their last project, and deliver the fully detailed blue print within two days. Not many could do it, in fact Tsunade was close to canceling the project, but Naruto insisted saying it would give the company a bad record. She agreed and allowed him to take it on and sure enough he performed yet another miracle. He had only been working for the company for ten months now but he was already pulling the place to the top and performing miracles left and right like the second coming of Christ. God she loved that boy. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sasuke left his apartment earlier than usual after receiving a call from his brother to report to the office immediately. Honestly it didn’t sound good to him but he refused to let his panic show as he passed by the many gawking pedestrians oh his way to the office. Uchiha Corp.’s cut through the sky looming over him as if his brother willed it to consume him but he ignored his urge to run once more as he entered through the glass doors. The women at the front desk greeted him with nods before quickly refocusing on their work, avoiding direct eye contact. Sasuke smirked at their tense shoulders. It hadn’t always been like that, they used to gawk at him and follow him drooling every morning but one day his brother paid them a visit after seeing a drop in performance. It was hard not to notice a year’s worth of slacking that coincidentally started when your baby brother transferred over. And Itachi had decided to take things into his own hands and pay the girls at the front desk a little visit. The next day after Itachi’s visit the girls didn’t even dare to look at Sasuke. He even leaned over one girl’s desk to see if she would look up at him, but she kept her eyes glued to her computer screen as she typed. Sasuke chuckled darkly remembering the fear in her eyes when he asked how his brother was doing. His face darkened however when in the elevator, all humor leaving him when he thought of what his brother had in stored for him. The lights labeling the floors lit up one by one until the elevator came to a halt as floor 66 lit up. The steel doors slid open slowly revealing the long hallway designed so the only way out was either to cower back into the elevator, or to walk down the glass hallway to the dark wooden doors at the other end. Sasuke, not being one to cower, walked fluidly with confidence to his brother’s office. Even though no one could see him despite the all glass hall Sasuke kept up his calm façade, it made him feel surer of himself even if he was going up against one of two men who could still make him feel insignificant. He pushed open the heavy doors with little difficulty before walking into the room and sliding into the leather chair in front of Itachi’s desk. “You rang?” Itachi turned his chair away from the large framed window of his office that acted as an ever changing landscape for Itachi’s ever hungry eyes. The older raven ignored his brother’s cynicism and plopped a manila folder onto his desk, sliding it halfway to Sasuke so he still had to reach to grab it. “Your next assignment.” He said as Sasuke glared at his brother’s childish tease. Sasuke flipped through the manila folder looking through the paper work and images that seemed to be taken from somewhere in Europe. “What is this?” He asked not quite sure what it was his brother had in mind. There were no instructions; simply a few photos, notes from an ambassador of the company, and a basic idea for becoming more eco friendly. Sasuke shifted through it again to be sure he hadn’t missed something but there was nothing to connect the dots. “That would be an outline little brother. People use those to come up with ideas.” Itachi smiled sweetly at his little brother as Sasuke glared at his unwanted wit. “I am well aware of what an outline is aniki. I meant why are you giving this to me?” Sasuke watched in irritation as Itachi got up and strutted over to his bar and poured himself a drink. He had offered Sasuke one but Sasuke held up his hand to decline to which Itachi shrugged his shoulders at before pouring him a drink anyways. What was the point in asking if he was going to decide for him anyways? Sasuke thought bitterly as he took the offered drink from his elder brother with a ‘hn’, waiting for him to explain. “I spoke to father and talked him into allowing you to head the new eco project in Amsterdam. I said it would be a great opportunity for you to develop some social skills and of course to learn the ropes.” Itachi chuckled darkly at his brother’s angered and slightly disgruntled expression. It was no secret that he didn’t socialize well and whenever he did he left his coworkers doubting their worth in society or rocking back and forth in a corner drooling. Sure Itachi was no angel himself but at least he had perfected a somewhat assuring smile that left his workers still functioning after he spoke with them. Sasuke decided to ignore his brother’s taunts and continued in a business-like manner. “So I am to plan out the building as well as oversee its start?” Sasuke asked as he read through the culture that seemed to coincide with any plans he might be able to come up with, the only issue he saw was picking the perfect location. “Yes and of course you will be collaborating with another company of which we are trying to form relations with. They are a steadily rising architecture and interior design company and will be helping us develop an image as well as incorporate all of the new Green technology. They have already selected who they will be sending and once I receive their report I will debrief you.” “Hn” “Well I am glad you understand. That is all.” He dismissed Sasuke and took a sip from his drink as he watched him reach to open the office doors. “Oh and Sasuke, good luck.” Sasuke turned to look at his brother who was looking up at him with concern. He sighed and smiled at his brother slightly. “I will; thank you.” It was always awkward for him to show how he felt but he couldn’t hide it from his brother even if he tried, so just around him he let his walls come down ever so slightly. They had been close since he was a child seeing as Itachi practically raised him and it was hard for him not to love his brother. And Itachi knew that and often used it to his advantage. “If you fail you will regret it.” Itachi warned as Sasuke left his office. Ah there it was; Sasuke had been waiting for the negatives that always seemed to follow any deal he made with his beloved yet satanic brother. Once Sasuke had left the room Itachi let out a deep sigh and returned to staring out at the early morning city. He was putting his life on the line against their father but it was worth it. If Sasuke pulled this off their father would have to admit his worth and give him a better position than office flunky. He would at least earn his rightful place as vice president and there was nothing their father could say about it after this, no matter how little faith he had in the youngest Uchiha. Itachi knew his brother was sharp and it was about time the rest of the world learned this as well. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sasuke looked out the window by his desk as the other few workers on his floor buzzed around copying papers and shouting at each other. He could see the dark clouds closing in on the city wrapping around the steel towers and chocking the light of the sun. He could see the slanted wall of rain a mile behind the first set of clouds closing in fast and he shifted to look at the time on his monitor. Only a few more minutes left; by the time he got to the front desk his shift would be over and he could leave before he was caught in the rain. He loaded his brief case bracing his laptop in its binding and placing the manila folder behind it for safe keeping. He already had a few ideas planned out inside and he would continue his work once he got home. Hopefully he would beat the rain there. Once Sasuke stepped outside he felt the first sprinkles of rain closing in on the city. He tried to hail a cab but it seemed more likely that the rains would drown him before a cab would stop. He huffed in anger pulling his jacket closer to himself as he walked swiftly down the street. He glared up at the sky wishing he could somehow will away the cloudy grand finally of this horrible day. As Sasuke glared at the falling droplets he was completely unaware of the blond blur that ran past him grinning wildly at the rain. This had been the best day ever for the other man and he was eager to celebrate with a bowlful of ramen before heading over to Sai’s. He ran right past the raven haired man in front of him dodging him along with every other person who seemed to be blaming the sky for their problems. Today was going to be the beginning of his big break and nothing was going to bring him down. Even the rain seemed like a friend rushing to congratulate him and he was loving its standing ovation. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> An: Hello everyone! Sorry it was so late please spare me! I had major writers block and I’m still afraid this chapter isn’t up to par. I also dread what I will do for the next part. Well real quick I have to apologize to one of my friend’s who I have tortured with unedited drafts all week. She loves reading the finals and I have been inhumane to my sweet honey. Sorry girly I promise to try and not do it again. But I probably will… in which case slap me and quickly run away. Well anyways back to the story. Enjoy and review.
