I am loving the feedback :D I also love how everyone seems to know what's going on... it's so cliche :S and so predictable, but I absolutely wanted this story to be that way. Jen, I liked the story ;) I wish I'd lived near Vegas as a kid, but I've only ever been there to visit family which never seems to be as much fun as it should be. I really never thought about driving for a long time as a bad thing, but you made me think "what if it was my kid?" and I'm feeling a little guilty... I lived in a small town south of Houston as a kid and I can remember driving to other states before realizing I might need to turn around and go back, of course gas was a dollar back then and in my powder blue Toyota Corolla (teenage nightmare but first choice of stay at home moms of the 90's) I could go what seemed like forever on $10. When I was 17 I actually had to buy a map in Oklahoma because I couldn't figure out my way back :S Things were probably a little different for me though than most because when I was 14 my sister died (I miss her but the grief is gone so don't worry) and my parents kind of turned into zombies that didn't pay much attention to what I did or where I went. I remember feeling very grown up because in many senses I was, but I think back sometimes on how many mistakes I made and how dangerous the things were that I did because I had absentee parents and get a little angry at them, but not too much... I had a lot of conflicting feelings about freedom at such a young age so I think maybe I try to write that into my stories. I like my characters to vacillate a lot because when you're young you do that. It's a rollercoaster ride and when I write from a teen point of view I try to hold onto that. My knowledge of SF and California in general is only that of a tourist. My brother lived there for most of my life, and I went to visit him for three weeks every summer until I graduated HS. I add in snipiits and small details because they are what I remember about the city, but I admit I probably made mistakes so I hope anyone reading can forgive me. I just loved it so much when I was there that when the story came into my head I had to write it. I hope you like it, it's progressing just how most of you thought it would ;) Chapter 3 The view from the bedroom windows was just as spectacular as the living room, and even more beautiful in the day light, but Naruto only gave himself half the chance to enjoy it. The fact that he’d woken up alone was consuming his thoughts. He lay back on the bed fingers laced behind his head as he thought about last night. He still didn’t know anything about Sasuke. His bedroom had no pictures or anything that could be considered revealing about him at all. It was like a hotel room. A really nice hotel room, but that wasn’t the point. He was obviously very traditionally Japanese. Everything he could see had a very minimalist feel to it, as Shikamaru had explained it, beauty in simplicity. His clothes were still scattered across the floor and they seemed to mar the serene perfection of the room. It was so strange to think that last night had been so amazing only to feel so out of place once morning came. He was thinking of getting up when he heard the door open to the apartment and then close again. He waited for Sasuke to come into the bedroom, but was shocked when a woman with shocking red hair came in instead. “Who the fuck are you!” She yelled when she noticed Naruto laid out on the bed. Naruto didn’t know how to feel about this woman, but he did know that he instantly wanted away from her. The glare she had focused on him wasn’t making it any better either. He didn’t feel like he had to justify anything to her though so he just rose, feigning confidence, completely naked, and slowly picked up his clothes and put them back on. He felt the daggers of her eyes stabbing into his back, and was glad he hadn’t had to look too hard for anything. He made his way around her and out the door when she yelled at him again. “Hey! I asked you a question. Who. Are. You. And what the hell are you doing in Sasuke’s bed?” Naruto glanced over his shoulder at her as he pulled out his phone. He started to dial as he made his way to the door and she followed him out into the hall to the elevator. He pushed the button just as Shikamaru picked up. “Hey, I’m stranded; can you come pick me up?” Shikamaru grumbled about early mornings and idiot blondes. Naruto smiled at the phone and said thanks before hanging up. “Are you going to answer me?” The woman gritted out between clinched teeth. He just looked at her one more time as the elevator slid open and he stepped inside. He turned around to face her and as the doors closed he smiled brightly and waved. He could hear her scream half way down the building. He didn’t want to loiter around the entrance, even though it was beautiful and seemed very comfortable so he set off in the direction he hoped would take him home. Shikamaru called him fifteen minutes later asking where he was, and then picked him up. It didn’t take long for Naruto to work up the nerve to ask about last night. “Nothing, I just don’t like the idea of you going out with him. He’s an asshole.” Naruto wanted to be angry, but after waking up alone, and then being screamed at by a hag he couldn’t find anything to disagree with. Shikamaru was smart, genius smart, so Naruto knew if he didn’t want to talk about something there was no amount of nagging that was going to get him too so they spent the rest of the drive in quiet contemplation. They parked and got out of the car before Shikamaru asked about the date. “It was fine, we went to some English place and had steak. Then we went back to his place, the view is amazing from up there, that apartment must be worth millions.” “I’m sure it is… did you sleep with him?” Shikamaru’s tone told Naruto that he didn’t know if he really wanted the answer or not, but he couldn’t help asking. Naruto just wanted his friend to not be upset with him, but he didn’t want to lie either. He hated that last night felt like a mistake, and he hated it even more because Shikamaru seemed to already know. “Yeah, I’m not a virgin anymore.” He said quietly. He didn’t know if he felt ashamed or relieved. It’s not like he could change it now anyway. “Why didn’t he bring you home this morning?” Shikamaru asked as they made their way into the apartment. Naruto flopped down on the couch and then regretted it when pain shot up his spine. “He wasn’t there when I woke up, and then this crazy banshee bitch came in and started screaming at me about who I was and what I was doing there. I just got dressed and left, didn’t know what else to do.” The conversation waned from there. Neither wanted to discuss more or go into more detail. They watched TV for a while before Naruto got dressed for work. He didn’t want to hope that Sasuke would come in today, but he did. He parked in the back and went up to Kakashi’s office for his pay check. He’d forgotten to pick it up last night before he left, for obvious reasons, and smiled at the man sitting behind his desk reading his little orange book which Naruto knew was porn, but Kakashi claimed was the greatest romance novel ever written. “Here for your check?” Kakashi said without looking up. “Yep.” Naruto reached over and picked it up and slipped it into his pocket. “Not like you to forget?” Kakashi finally looked up at him, eyebrow quirked in question. “I was a little distracted last night.” Naruto said, hoping for nonchalant. “Could it have had anything to do with the dark haired fellow that hangs around all the time when you’re here?” Naruto blushed crimson and just mumbled under his breath about nosy porn reading bastards as he turned for the door. “I put a little something extra in there, off the books. I never said thanks for fixing the cappuccino machine.” “Thanks, Kashi.” Naruto said as he walked out the door, and looked back once more before it closed behind him to see a small smile curve through the mask that covered most of the man’s face. Kakashi was an interesting guy and a great boss. Naruto put on his apron and went to work, ignoring Sakura completely. The day passed slowly, and Naruto felt a headache coming on just before his break so he slipped away to the drug store down the street to buy something for it. He sat down on the bench outside to take it and decided to look at his paycheck. He pulled it out and opened the envelope. He closed it quickly and looked around to see if anyone was looking before he opened it again slowly. Three crisp one hundred dollar bills sat there in front of his pay check. He never would have taken that much if he’d known, and now he didn’t know what to do about it. He carefully closed the envelope up and slid it into his pocket before heading back. He had four more hours before closing and then home and bed. Sleep seemed like the perfect cure for how he was feeling. He shuffled back into the shop and set about bussing tables and tidying up, something that Sakura was too lazy most of the time to do, and headed back to get the broom when he noticed Sakura in the corner table. She was leaning over most likely trying to enhance her nonexistent chest in the face of some unsuspecting male that had just come in for some caffeine. He grabbed the broom and swept around the front. It was dinner time so they still had one more rush to go before closing. He put the broom back and went back to the counter when he noticed that Sakura was sitting down at the table now, and the person she was flirting with so outrageously was none other than Sasuke. The same Sasuke that Naruto had given his virginity to the night before. The same man that had left him alone this morning to pick up the pieces of his shattered pride. His chest hurt as he looked into that handsome face that was paying such close attention to whatever Sakura was babbling about. He had to look away before he caused a scene. He would not give that bastard the satisfaction of knowing he was hurt. He’d learned a long time ago that people like that enjoyed knowing they’d gotten to him so he ignored the burning in his lungs and the sting behind his eyes, and went about keeping himself busy. A couple came in and ordered so he set about pouring their cups and taking their money, but never really saw or heard them over the roaring in his ears. He did hear the high pitched laugh from the corner. He refused to look though. He checked his watch several times and assumed that time had slowed down because it wasn’t possible that it had only been ten minutes. More customers started to come in, and Naruto needed help, but he’d cut off his right arm before he’d ask Sakura. He barely noticed when she joined him in taking orders and filling cups. He was blank at that point. He went through the motions but he wasn’t really there. He thought for a moment how strange it was to slip so easily back into the mask he’d worn his whole life before coming to this city. He’d been stupid for trusting, and even more stupid for giving so much, but Naruto was smart. Maybe not book smart, but he was street smart. He’d learned his lesson. Time seemed to speed back up to normal, and soon the rush was over. They were back to cleaning and went to the back to see if Kakashi was still there. He was on the phone when Naruto knocked. He waved him in and covered the phone before he asked what Naruto needed. “Would it be alright if I went home early tonight? It’s been a long day.” “Yeah, sure Naruto. Are you alright?” Naruto put on his best fake smile, which he admitted wasn’t that great and lied through his teeth. Kakashi didn’t look convinced, but he let him go. Naruto said goodnight, and was in his car before anyone could call him back. His bed was welcoming. Shikamaru hadn’t said a word about why he was home so early, he’d just laid down next to Naruto, on top of the covers and held him. There were no tears, but the pain was back. Sleep finally took him as Shikamaru whispered that everything would be alright, and Naruto’s last thought was that Shikamaru was always right, and he hoped that this time wasn’t different. ooOOoo Naruto woke up hours later to loud angry voices echoing off the walls of their apartment. He crawled out of bed and stretched. He felt better, and decided that he’d go find out what was going on and maybe find something to eat. He changed into a pair of pajama pants and shuffled into the living room rubbing the sleep from his eyes. The yelling had stopped, and when he looked up he noticed why. Sasuke was standing defensively in front of both Kiba and Shikamaru. Sasuke was looking at him blankly and Shikamaru and Kiba both walked toward him. “If you want him gone just say the word, and he’s gone.” Kiba growled. Naruto was just confused. He shook his head both to clear his thoughts and to say no to Kiba’s question. “Why are you here?” He asked Sasuke. He was glad that his voice came out confident if not a little sleepy. “I came home this morning to find you gone, no note, nothing. I left a note, and I left food out for you. I go to see you at work and you ignore me, then you disappear. I show up here thinking you at least owe me an explanation only to find you under guard from a rabid dog and an asshole. What was I supposed to think?” Naruto just stood there, not knowing what to say. No one spoke as he took in all that Sasuke had said. The silence stretched and everyone shifted awkwardly. “I didn’t see a note. I woke up and I was alone. A woman with bright red hair and glasses came in and started yelling at me asking what I was doing there. I just got dressed and left. I figured if you’d wanted me to stay then you wouldn’t have sent her over to chase me off. Then you came in to the shop and started flirting with Sakura the slut… how was I supposed to feel? I came home early to get away from you.” Sasuke looked shocked, but it turned to anger quickly. “Karin was in my apartment?” His voice was rough and furious. “If that’s the redhead then yeah. She walked right in like she owned the place.” “She does not own it or even belong there. I don’t even know how she got in, but I can promise you it will be corrected immediately. She works for me. I’ve made it abundantly clear to her that there will never be anything more than a professional relationship between us, but she is a little hard headed. I won’t be so dismissive about it next time I see her. The note I left for you asked you to stay and wait for me. I had to go in and finish up some legal work on my next release. I didn’t want you to leave… I was going to take you to work.” There were too many people in the room now and it was becoming an uncomfortable conversation to have with an audience. Naruto looked at Shikamaru pleadingly. He rolled his eyes, but the small smile he gave him was enough to tell Naruto that he’d do as he asked. “Come on Kiba. Lets go get a burger or something.” Kiba sputtered. “But I want to…” “Let’s go Kiba.” Shikamaru said more firmly. Naruto mouthed ‘thank you’ to Shikamaru before they both turned and left, Kiba with his shoulders hunched in defeat. When the door closed, Sasuke was on him. The kiss seemed desperate, but he returned it just as desperately. “Why were you flirting with Sakura?” Sasuke shook his head and buried his nose in Naruto’s hair. “I wasn’t. I was asking her about you and she used it as an excuse to expose herself. I figured if I was nice to her she’d tell me about you, but she kept telling me about herself. Eventually I told her to shut up and go away.” Naruto laughed. “I bet she didn’t like that much.” “No, she didn’t.” Just then Naruto’s stomach growled. Sasuke leaned back and looked at him over. “Get dressed, we’re going to dinner.” Naruto just smiled and headed back to the bedroom. He was digging around in his closet when he heard the door close. Strong hands turned him around and pulled him close. The look in his eyes was clear and Naruto shivered. He felt his back hit the wall and then Sasuke was on his knees pulling down his pants and sliding his mouth down Naruto’s cock. It only took a minute and Naruto was coming. He was beyond embarrassed. When Sasuke stood up he tried to hide his face behind his hands, but Sasuke pulled him close. “That’s what I wanted to do this morning.” “I’m sorry I…” “Don’t” Sasuke growled, but his tone softened quickly. “Get dressed. I’ll wait down stairs.” He was gone before Naruto could say anything. ooOOoo Dinner was at Round Table Pizza. Naruto was happy not to have to worry about the menu, and he loved this place. It was cheesy and fun. It reminded him of the hokier parts of Vegas. He did have a few nice memories of his home town. Sasuke looked a little out of place, but he didn’t seem to notice or care. Naruto talked about anything that came to mind and they ended up sitting there for over an hour. He hadn’t had the chance to do this before, he’d always been too nervous when he was around the other man to babble like he usually did. He hoped that it didn’t annoy Sasuke so much that he changed his mind about wanting him. It was late when they left, almost eleven. They walked the streets a little, Naruto pointing out all the strange things he saw and Sasuke nodding when necessary, but stayed quiet. It was nearly midnight when Sasuke seemed to tense and said they needed to head back. Naruto assumed he was just being cautious. They started making their way back toward where his car was parked. They were about half way back when a dark Audi A8 pulled up next to them and a man in a very nice black suit stepped out and leaned against the side. “Sasuke.” He said casually, and pulled a silver case from his pocket. He popped the case open, took out a cigarette, and slid it into his mouth. When he snapped the case closed Naruto jumped. The tension in the air was so thick you could slice it with a knife, and when Naruto looked at Sasuke he unconsciously took a step back. He’d never seen his face so cold. “Itachi.” The sound was dark and full of something Naruto couldn’t identify. It was obvious that Sasuke didn’t like this man, and this Itachi didn’t seem to care. The crisp strike of a match brought Naruto’s attention back to the stranger. He lit the cigarette without taking his dark eyes off of Sasuke for even a moment. Naruto also thought it was strange that in those eyes he could definitely see affection and amusement directed at Sasuke. He flicked the match into the street and inhaled deep. When he exhaled the smoke was thick, curling and swirling as it was lifted and blown away. Naruto was so mesmerized by it that he didn’t notice those dark eyes scrutinizing him before they snapped back to Sasuke. He kept quiet, hoping that the awkwardness of the moment would end soon, and they could go. “I’ve been wondering what could have captured your attention so completely, but now that I see him up close, I understand. He looks like a very nice distraction.” Naruto couldn’t take his eyes away from this man. Even as he spoke about him as if he weren’t there, he was mesmerizing. This was the kind of man that could never be normal or ordinary. He was stunning and there was something about him that would make people beg to be insulted by him if only to be noticed. His face was smooth and perfect like Sasuke’s and it hit him that they were related. They had to be. “What do you want?” Sasuke growled low and menacing, shocking Naruto out of his revelry. It occurred to him that he shouldn’t be there, he didn’t belong. These two men were all grace and beauty while he was clumsy and unattractive. He felt very small in the presence of such power. “Am I not allowed to check up on my little brother? No one has seen you in months accept at work. You disappear every day without telling anyone. I just wanted to make sure you weren’t getting yourself into trouble.” Sasuke stepped forward, and Naruto stepped back. “I do not, nor will I ever need you to look after me. What I do is none of your business anymore.” “Don’t be ridiculous little brother. I haven’t seen you in ages. I just wanted to make sure you were taking care of yourself.” Itachi looked calm and relaxed as he took another drag off his cigarette, and the cooler he looked the tenser Sasuke seemed to get. “I’m sure you’re friends have kept you well informed. I would prefer it if you kept your distance. I have a legitimate business to run and a reputation for integrity, and I will not risk it by associating with known criminals.” Itachi’s eyes narrowed at the insult, but didn’t change his otherwise pleasant demeanor. The tension was still thick though, and Naruto just wanted to leave. They were brothers and Sasuke obviously had a problem with Itachi that was more than a simple family disagreement. Naruto felt like an intruder on this very private conversation so he decided he’d try to slip away unnoticed. It didn’t work. Sasuke reached out and gripped his wrist tight and firm. “This is none of my business Sasuke.” Naruto whispered as he tried to pull away. It was futile though. Sasuke’s grip was immovable. “What do you know about him little brother?” Naruto gasped and made more of an effort to get away. “More than you do, that I can guarantee.” Naruto stopped struggling to look at Sasuke, but his attention was still fully on his brother. They were like two predators fighting for territory and Naruto again felt a bit like the stalked prey. He could feel Itachi’s eyes on him, and the thought of his earlier crude approval sent a cold shock through his body. “I wouldn’t be so sure about that. I did a little research for you, and I came up with quite a lot. Poor little orphan from Las Vegas wandering through the big city only to capture the attention of one of the most successful young men in that city. It seems too convenient if you ask me.” Itachi drew Naruto’s attention again by taking one last drag and flicking the cigarette into the street. “Are you a con artist little Naruto?” Naruto was stunned and insulted, but mostly hurt by the question. He’d left Vegas behind so he could find happiness, something he’d never really known, and when he finally finds it he’s accused of being a shark. He jerked his arm out of Sasuke’s hand and started to walk away. He only got a few feet before Sasuke was on him again, this time wrapped around him tight. “Don’t listen to him.” He whispered softly, keeping his grip on Naruto firm but comforting. “Did I strike a nerve?” Itachi asked in a saccharin sweet voice that did nothing to hide the darkness in the question or his aura. Naruto hated being judged, especially by people that thought they were better than him. He turned toward Sasuke’s brother and glared. “I came here because there was nothing left for me in Vegas. I made friends, found a place to live, and got a job. I’ve worked hard for the few things that I have. “I don’t know much about Sasuke, I don’t even know his last name, and if I did it probably wouldn’t matter because I don’t pay attention to names. He dresses nice and he has expensive things, but it wouldn’t have mattered if he hadn’t. I didn’t pursue him, and I haven’t asked for anything from him. I did not target him, nor am I trying to con him. I just liked him.” Naruto turned to Sasuke and gave him a watery smile. “I’m sorry. I can’t do this. I promised myself when I came here that I wouldn’t let anyone hurt me again.” Naruto pulled away roughly and started walking away. He pulled out his cell phone and started dialing Shikamaru when he heard the men behind him start to argue in low gruff voices. It was in Japanese and it was spoken so fast that Naruto couldn’t tell how they understood each other at all. The sound of their voices faded as he moved away, and Shikamaru answered on the first ring. “Hey, I need you to pick me up again. I’m on Van Ness at Bay.” Naruto could hear the ‘I told you so’ in his voice as he said “I’ll be there in a minute.” Naruto heard the phone click and crossed the street. He was grateful to have Shikamaru, but he was worried that one day he’d ask for to much, and he wouldn’t be there. It was a very new thing for Naruto to be able to count on someone, and he didn’t want to abuse it. He’d have to find a way to make it up to him.
