"That went well." Kakashi commented as they turned back to the living room.
"I think so. " Yamato agreed as they headed for the bedroom. "Okay, we need to shop and do more laundry. We went through both sets of sheets."
"Maybe we should buy another set." Kakashi snickered at Yamato's eye roll. "Alright, I know you're doing laundry." Kakashi said. "By the way, were his clothes really still wet?"
"No. I figured it would at least guarantee he came back to give me mine back." Yamato grinned.
Kakashi laughed. "You can be sneaky. I'm so impressed. Okay. I've got an errand to run, so I'll pick up our groceries while I'm out."
"I have a few things to do before tonight, too." He paused. "Hey, um… did you ever have plans for our back yard?" Yamato asked, staring out the window.
Kakashi raised an eyebrow. "Um, no. Why?"
"I have an idea." Yamato said, thoughtfully.
"Well, yours are usually good." He glanced at the alarm clock. "We have a little over five hours. Let's get moving."
"Right." Yamato said, turning away from the window. He hoped he had enough time. The last time he made renovations to the house, he'd ended up having to recreate a bunch of furniture to accommodate their new bed. He hoped it wouldn't end up being quite that complicated this time.
He watched from the roof across the way as Iruka changed into fresh clothes and gathered his laundry. He made two different piles and Kakashi puzzled over it. He still didn't get why they bothered. Just stick it all in at once. Then he remembered Yamato's white underwear coming out with the gray and blue stripes. He still didn't know how he managed it. Which was why he simply didn't do the laundry.
After starting the first load, the teacher headed to the kitchen. He wrote out a fairly long list, going back to his cabinets and refrigerator, which was not bare, Kakashi noted, several times. Finally, he pulled his shoes back on, grabbed his vest and left his apartment.
Kakashi waited until he saw the other man turn the corner at the end of the block before leaping across to the other roof and slipping into the window. He had a few questions to be answered.
Iruka grumbled on the way back to his apartment. He'd had to go to three separate stores to find some of the things he wanted, but at least he was done. It had taken far longer than he'd hoped, but he thought he'd still have time to finish the things he wanted to do before going back to Kakashi and Yamato's for dinner.
He checked the clock in the kitchen as he put things away. He could still do this, if he worked quickly. He pulled out the pots and ingredients he needed and set to work, pausing only long enough to switch the loads of laundry.
His stomach rumbled when the smells started to float up to him. He grabbed a bag of chips to snack on so he wouldn't embarrass himself when they sat down to eat. After seasoning the broth and stirring it, he lowered the heat for it to simmer. The water was ready to boil for his noodles and the pork was just finishing up.
He hurried into his bedroom to change. He skipped the uniform and pulled out his one decent sweater. It was blue and he pulled on his dress pants to match. He grabbed his hairbrush and ran it through his hair quickly, tying it back up again. He grabbed Yamato's clothes and folded them, shoving them into a bag and he was mostly ready.
Carrying it all was not fun, so he was grateful that his apartment wasn't too far from their house. He did have a problem, though, when he got there. He didn't have enough hands to knock. He was forced to set the clothing bag down and balance the broth bowl precariously. Just as he raised his hand to knock, the door opened. He blinked in surprise.
Kakashi grinned at him. "He came back," he called over his shoulder.
"Oh good." Yamato said, approaching the door.
"Did you think I wouldn't?" Iruka asked, raising his eyebrow.
"There was that chance." Kakashi said, then stared down at the bowls in Iruka's hands. "What's this?" He asked, taking the bowl from Iruka so he could come in. "Did you cook?"
Iruka blushed. "Yeah. It's… my own recipe."
"I get his cooking again? How did I get so lucky?" Yamato asked from behind Kakashi.
The copy nin threw a mock glare over his shoulder, then grinned at Iruka. "See? Replacing me already."
Iruka shook his head and picked up the clothing bag, handing it to Yamato on the way in. "All clean." He turned to the kitchen to set the rest of his stuff down. "I need to put this stuff together. Are you ready to eat?"
"If you were going to cook, you could have done that here." Kakashi said, shaking his head.
"I know my own kitchen," he said simply and Kakashi couldn't argue with that too much.
After he set everything down, though, they both pounced on him. "You've made us wait more than five hours," Kakashi complained, then nipped at his neck. They had him pinned against the wall in the kitchen, each of them holding a hand against the wall, their lips roaming any exposed skin they can find.
Iruka fought hard to keep his head, though it was not easy. He moaned as they found his weak spots. "Ramen's… going to get cold," he managed.
Yamato backed up first. "Can't have that," he said with a grin.
"I'd rather have him." Kakashi said and captured Iruka's lips. The younger man's eyes closed and he got thoroughly lost in the kiss. He pushed his fingers through the crop of silver hair, knocking the headband off of his head. It was only the clearing throat that brought them back.
Iruka blushed profusely. "Sorry." He said, pulling away from Kakashi.
"Not your fault. When he wants something, it's very hard to say no." Yamato said, glaring at him.
"Don't I know it." Iruka muttered.
Yamato turned to Kakashi. "Don't waste all his hard work with the ramen. I can already tell he went to a lot of trouble to make this for us."
Kakashi looked abashed. "Sorry."
"It's okay. This should only take me a few minutes to put together. Are you guys ready to eat?" He asked, his face flaming.
"Yes, we are," Yamato said and dragged Kakashi out to the living room. Iruka heard him say, "stay out here where you can't cause him any more trouble."
Iruka laughed. "It's okay, really," he called.
"Well, I wanted one, too." Yamato said at his ear. "And if I didn't get him out of here, I'd never get a turn." Iruka blinked at him as Yamato's lips captured his. He pulled away in only a minute, though and the younger man was glad of it. He swore he could spend hours just kissing those two, then he'd never get dinner done.
He cleared his throat. "Do I have to kick you out, too?" Iruka asked, raising an eyebrow.
Yamato grinned, completely unrepentant. "Nope. Can I help?"
"I suppose, since we're not turning on the stove. Bowls," he said and pointed toward the cabinet they were stored in. He set out his containers and took one of the bowls that Yamato handed to him. "Could you also set the table?" He asked, portioning out the noodles. "Oh, crap, I didn't bring drinks."
"We've got that covered. I've had sake warming near the fireplace and Kakashi already made tea." Yamato turned to the living room and laid out the mats and chopsticks on the coffee table. "We thought we could just eat out there, if that's okay."
"Not my house," he shrugged, "that's up to you two." Iruka smiled.
"But it's your dinner." Yamato corrected him.
Iruka sighed. "It's fine, really. I…" he started, but shook his head. "Thanks," he said instead and let it go.
He finished putting everything together and was glad he'd thought to use thermal containers. The bowls were still steaming when they sat down together to eat. They paused a moment to send up their prayer of thanks, then both of the older men dug in.
Iruka sat back and watched them eat for a few minutes. It was a real pleasure to watch them digging into his food. He never got to cook for someone else. The Bastard had preferred to eat out the few times they had meals together.
He realized, as he thought about it, that it didn't bother him anymore. Only a couple of days and he was over it. The more he thought about the whole situation with Izumo, he knew that he'd never loved him in the first place. His pride had been hurt more than anything.
He turned his attention back to the other two. "Wow." Yamato said after swallowing a mouthful of noodles. "Where did you learn to make this?"
Iruka grinned. "Actually, Ichiraku taught me some of it. I spent so much time at his place that he told me once I ought to make my own. Then he said that if I could beat him on broth, he'd teach me the rest. Took me nearly a month of attempts, but I did it. I was so sick of ramen by the end of that month, though, I couldn't use what I'd learned for another three." He chuckled.
They laughed with him. "It paid off." Yamato said, and upended his bowl. "I could eat about four of those."
Iruka blushed. "There's enough for another one, but it's probably not really hot anymore."
"I don't care." Yamato said and stood up.
"Hey! I want some of that," Kakashi called and, glancing at Iruka, took off to the kitchen after his lover.
Iruka laughed. "I can make more," he called.
They came back with his containers and set them on the table. When they started to fight over it, Iruka picked up the pork and broth and held them out of reach. "Boys!" He yelled, surprising himself a little.
They both stopped and stared at him. And to Iruka's complete shock, both had blushes on their faces. They dropped their eyes to the table. "Sorry." They mumbled at the same time.
"Split it. I'll make some more." He shook his head at them, amazed.
Kakashi sighed. "Not tonight, but maybe another day soon?" He looked up hopefully.
Iruka laughed. "Deal." He set the containers down and watched as they split the rest of the food up. He shook his head at them again. "You two are something together."
"Something is right." Yamato said and chuckled, then leaned over and kissed Kakashi on the cheek. "I wouldn't trade him, though."
Kakashi grinned. "Nope."
Iruka felt that little stab of jealousy again and did his best to shove it aside. What was he doing there? They'd definitely become his friends, but it was hard to watch them together. He wanted what they had together, more than he ever realized. He really wanted it with them, but that wasn't possible. In the mean time, he felt very much like the odd man out. He suppressed a sigh and went back to his own bowl, but it didn't taste as good as it had a moment ago.
Kakashi saw the shift in him and kicked himself. The last thing he wanted to do was make him uncomfortable. He wished he could just tell him how they felt about him. But he couldn't, because he knew Iruka wouldn't believe it yet. They needed to make sure he saw it and felt it, before he heard it.
He reached under the table with his free hand and squeezed Yamato's knee, then sent a pointed look at Iruka. Yamato nodded and set his chopsticks down. He leaned over and tilted Iruka's head up to him. He cupped the back of the younger man's head in his hand and laid his lips over the other's.
Kakashi watched the expressions cross Iruka's face. Confusion, longing, want. Iruka's hand came up and laid against the side of Yamato's face as they lost themselves in the kiss. Kakashi had to shift in his seat as he watched it. He knew well how both of those sets of lips felt.
When they broke apart, Yamato grinned at him. "Sorry," he said, not looking the least bit sorry. "I just couldn't seem to resist.
Iruka shook his head. "You're are not sorry."
Yamato's grin widened. "No, not really."
Iruka grinned, then, too. "Well, I won't turn them down." When he went back to his bowl, he looked a lot less miserable.
When dinner was finally over, neither of the men would let Iruka clean up, so he spent the time inspecting the different statues and pieces of art around the room. There were a lot of small ones of different animals. There was the one he'd looked at the night before and another on a matching bookshelf on the other side of the fireplace. This was of the two of them intertwined, kissing.
On a small table near the window was an unfinished work. He blinked at it a few times, but try as he might, he could not mistake what it was going to be. Three people. There were no details to it yet, so he reminded himself it could be any three people, including their team. That thought firmly in his mind, he turned back to examine the clock.
"That took a lot longer than I thought it would at first." Yamato said from behind him.
"How did you manage it? It's gorgeous." Iruka was tilting his head to see if he could see behind it, but the clock was seamless.
"I grew the wood around it. The problem wasn't getting it there, it was cleaning it up after the fact. I couldn't do the rest of the face until I whittled and sanded the outside. I did the whole thing while having to sit on a tree stump I grew into the floor." He chuckled. "Just because I can summon and manipulate it, doesn't mean I can make it comfortable."
Iruka laughed. "Well, I'd say it was worth it. It's wonderful." His lips twitched. "And for the record, your ass doesn't seem any the worse for wear for it."
Yamato blushed a little. "Thanks."
"Okay, so, Hachi Hachi?" Kakashi said, as he came back out. "And Yamato is that sake done?"
"Yeah. Let me get it poured."
Iruka turned back to the table as Kakashi settled down on one side. "You guys want to make it more interesting?" Kakashi asked, a gleam in his eye.
Yamato and Iruka glanced at each other. "Um, how?"
"Strip Hachi Hachi," Kakashi said with a grin.
"Um, strip Hachi Hachi? How does that work?" Iruka asked.
"Oh, that's easy," Yamato said as he set the sake bottles on the table and put the big one back by the fire. "Lowest person - or two - at the end of a round loses a piece of clothing."
Iruka looked down at himself. He could lose five rounds before he was completely naked. If they let him count his socks separately. "Let me put my vest on first."
"Nope." Kakashi said and grinned, then pulled his mask up.
"Not. Fair." Yamato said and yanked at it.
"And your headband doesn't count, either," Iruka added.
"Speaking of headbands, your hair should be down," Yamato said, turning to Iruka.
"What?" The youngest blinked at him.
"Your hair should be down," Kakashi said. "We really like it that way."
Iruka blushed, but reached up and pulled the hair tie out. Yamato paused on his way to his seat to stop and bury his face in it. When he stopped to tease the spot behind Iruka's ear that was so sensitive, a shiver ran down his back. "I could spend hours right here," Yamato whispered to him and Iruka's eyes closed.
A throat cleared and the older man pulled back. "Sorry. Where were we?" He asked as he took his seat.
Iruka took another few seconds to calm his screaming nerves. That had been… he had no word for it. But it was a moment he knew he'd go back to again and again when he was home alone in his bed. Something that was just his and Yamato's. He shook himself mentally and sat down.
"We were discussing the rules. Fine, my mask and headband don't count. That puts us on even footing, I think." He shuffled the cards and put one card down for each of them. Iruka picked the middle, Yamato took the one on the opposite end from him and Kakashi the remaining card who ended up with January, anyway and started the reshuffle.
"So," Kakashi began as he passed the deck to Iruka for cutting, "we don't have to report to Tsunade until Monday."
Iruka took the deck and split it in half, then put it back together and handed it over to Yamato. "That's all? Haven't you guys been out for something like three months straight?"
Yamato nodded as he shuffled the deck. "Yah. I was hoping we could stay around here for a while. I'm tired of travelling. And the holiday's only a month away." He sighed and handed the deck to Kakashi.
Kakashi dealt the seven cards to each of them, then laid out the field in the middle of the table. "Small field. Dealt hands?" He asked, considering his own.
"Not for me," Yamato said, sipping his sake.
"I have one," Iruka said, turning his cards to show the other two. "You know, I could talk to them. There's still a lot of work to do in the commercial district here and they're always talking about needing people for it."
Kakashi glanced up. "Don't compromise yourself for us." He marked their scores and sipped at his own bottle. He selected one card and placed a February onto the table, capturing the hand. "Sage," he said, indicating his turn was done.
"I'm not talking about fixing the mission roster, but none of the other teams have been out that much or for that long." He said, considering his move. He placed a March card in the field and captured a hand. "I'm thinking, too, of the other three. You all need breaks from those kinds of missions." He sipped at his bottle. "Sage."
Yamato sighed. "I am so losing this round." He placed a card next to the field. "Sage." He picked up his bottle. "Well, I myself wouldn't turn down some time home."
Kakashi made his move, then looked over at Iruka. "Don't get in trouble for us. But if we can stay home, I'm sure we'd all like to."
Iruka nodded. "I'll see what I can. I know, I know, I won't do anything illegal." He chuckled at the look on Kakashi's face as he laid his card down, capturing his hand.
They fell silent for a while, concentrating on the hand. Iruka stared in shock at the last card when it came back around to him. "Wow. I think I won the round." He made his last play.
Kakashi worked through the scoring. "Yup, this one goes to Iruka."
Yamato groaned. "He'll be the last one naked, I'm telling you."
Kakashi chuckled. "That's okay, we'll just have to tackle him and strip him ourselves. In the mean time, we have to give up a piece of clothing."
Iruka laughed. "Do I get to pick?"
"Hell no." Yamato said, pulling his sweater off.
Iruka stared in surprise. "Why did you take your sweater off first?"
"I'm hoping to distract you a little," he said with a grin.
"Good idea," Kakashi said and took his off, too.
"Not. Fair." Iruka moaned, staring at their chests.
"Is, too, fair." Yamato countered. "You simply being here is a distraction."
"Ha. You're funny." Iruka said, picking up the deck of cards and shuffling. He handed it to Kakashi to cut, then to Yamato to shuffle.
He took the cards and started to shuffle. "I don't think he believes us, Kakashi."
The older man shook his head. "I think you're right." He turned to Iruka and their mouths crashed together. Iruka felt his tongue along his lower lip and parted them, taking him into his mouth. His arms went around Kakashi and their kiss deepened. He moaned low in his throat over it, which only got louder when the copy nin's arms went around him.
"We're still playing here, right?" Yamato said, tapping his fingers on the table. "Cards, that is?"
Kakashi pulled back and grinned. "Yes, we're still playing cards."
Iruka sat back, huffing. "Not fair. You know that scatters my brain."
"Yeah… Does it?" Yamato asked and the teacher blushed.
"As if you can't tell?" He said, picking up the cards. He dealt the player cards out as he tried to get a hold of himself, but he couldn't avoid reaching down to readjust which only succeeded in making him blush further.
"Maybe we just wanted to hear it?" Kakashi asked, as Iruka dealt out the rest. He looked over his cards.
Iruka had no idea what to say. He stared at the cards instead. "Large field. Dealt hands?" He asked of the card game.
When no one said anything, he looked up to see them both looking at him intently. "Yes, it does," he said quietly and punctuated it by draining his sake bottle.
"That wasn't so hard, was it?" Kakashi asked and looked back at his cards.
Iruka considered playing it off with a bad joke, but decided against it. "Actually, it was kind of hard." He glanced up at them. "Dealt hands?" He asked again and the other two looked back at their cards.
"Not me," Yamato said.
"Nope." Kakashi answered, "you?"
Iruka shook his head. He considered his move. "Why?"
"Why what?" Yamato asked.
He played a card and looked up at the other man. "Why do you need to hear it?" He paused. "Sage."
Kakashi considered his cards. "Do you remember what I told you at lunch?" He asked, then picked a card to play.
"Of course," Iruka said, sitting back. He went for his bottle again before remembering it was empty.
"Let me fill that." Yamato picked it up and reached for the big one. After filling it, he handed it back.
"We both regret a lot of lost time with each other," Kakashi said, making a capture. "Sage."
Yamato took his turn, considering his move carefully. "A lot of time." He chuckled. "Anyway, it took us a few months, but we finally figured out how to stop beating around the bush." He played a card and looked up. "Sage."
" What do you mean?" Iruka asked as he looked over his own cards again. He made his play and looked up to see both of them staring at him.
"Talking about things. Remember I mentioned that?" Kakashi asked as he made his own play. "Sage."
"Yes." Iruka sighed. "What does this have to do with me? And getting scatterbrained when you kiss me?"
"Just that we may be able to figure it out, but that's no guarantee. Sometimes it's better if you tell us some things." Kakashi's eyes met Iruka's and he had a feeling they knew all about his damned emotions.
He sighed and tried to concentrate on the game for a few moments. Kakashi let it go as they went through their turns. "I think this one is mine," the copy nin said, and sure enough, when the scores were figured, he was.
Iruka took his sweater off and added it to the pile and Yamato gave up his pants. Kakashi steered the conversation back on to easier topics as they worked through the sake bottle and the game. Three rounds later, Iruka had nothing but his underwear and a single sock left, Yamato had his socks and nothing else on and Kakashi still had his pants.
Yamato glanced over at Kakashi, then back at Iruka. "Something doesn't seem right about this."
"I agree," the younger man said. "But his luck can't hold out forever. Deal," he said, looking at the copy nin.
"Yes, sensei." He said with a grin. He dealt the player cards, set up the field and took his turn.
Iruka laughed. "Oh, what I'd do to you if I could have you in my class for just five minutes."
The color drained from Kakashi's face. "Oh my." He cleared his throat and shifted in his seat.
The teacher raised an eyebrow at Yamato. "He…um… likes role play," Yamato said.
"Oh really?" Iruka asked, staring at the oldest of them. "I've… never had the chance. The Bastard was not adventurous. Even Raido was rather limited in what he'd try." Iruka considered his cards as he spoke.
Yamato shook his head. "Now, that's a shame."
"It really is. Izumo wouldn't even let me… well, let's just say that it wasn't much of a surprise in the end that he went back to women." Iruka said, shaking his head. He played one, capturing a hand, then motioned to Yamato.
"Really?" Kakashi looked up at that.
"Nope. Not once, though I did ask." Iruka realized that the sake must be getting to him. He was a lot more open than he would have been otherwise. He held up his bottle. "Is there any more?"
Yamato nodded and took it from him. "Well, his loss, like we said. And, I think, our gain." Kakashi glanced over at the teacher at this.
They watched Yamato make his choice. "Definitely our gain. So, Iruka, you'll be staying tonight with us, right?" He asked rather casually, as he finished his move.
Iruka blinked at them. He should have guessed they'd want him to stay. It still confused him, but he wasn't going to pass up time with them. "Yeah, I'll stay."
Kakashi grinned. "Good." He played his card. "We were hoping you would. Sage."
Iruka kept his eyes on his cards. He wondered if he'd ever figure these two out. He played a card and made a capture, then looked up. "Sage. And my round."
Yamato groaned. "I have one sock left."
"Hey, I'm down to my underwear." Kakashi frowned down at his blue boxers.
"Oh, sexy." Iruka said with a laugh. They had little shuriken on them.
Kakashi blushed. "I hadn't expected you'd be paying attention to them when I got to this point tonight. I rather thought you'd be thoroughly distracted."
The younger man chuckled. "They're not that bad." He shuffled the deck and handed it to Kakashi. "Well, looks like we've got one, maybe two rounds left."
"I'm thinking the next round decides it, hmm?" Yamato asked, taking the deck to shuffle.
"You're only saying that because you're convinced you'll lose and you've only got one sock left." Kakashi pointed out.
"Um, duh?" Yamato said, raising his eyebrows.
Iruka laughed and took the deck from him. He dealt the cards out, and looked everything over. "Ohh. Grand field. Dealt hands?"
"Nope," Kakashi said and sighed.
"Holy crap, I do." Yamato said and looked up at them. "Four three."
"Bullshit. No one gets that dealt," Iruka said, but Yamato turned the cards. "Well, damn."
"Maybe I won't lose this hand after all." Yamato said with a grin. "I'll get to keep my sock."
"Don't count your cards yet." Kakashi said, staring at his own.
The three of them concentrated on the play for a bit, conversation falling to a stop as they considered their moves. They took their turns, sipping their sake, otherwise engrossed in the game. None of them wanted to come in dead last.
Finally Yamato looked up. "HA! I did it!" He played his last card. "This one is mine. I get to keep my sock!"
Kakashi frowned and finished the scoring. "Damn," he said, looking up at Iruka, "he won." Then he stood and shucked his boxers and both of the other men lost their thoughts of celebration. It was damned hard to think at all when the object of their desire stood there in nothing at all.
They glanced at each other. "I think I'm done playing." Yamato said. "Cards, at least."
"I agree," Iruka looked back at Kakashi and was fairly certain there was honest to goodness drool on his chin.
"I think I shouldn't be the only one naked." He said, sending a pointed look toward Iruka's briefs.
"For the record," Yamato said, working to recover his brain, "I was right. Iruka had the most clothes left on."
"You were," Kakashi grinned. "So we get to tackle him and remove the rest," he said, and they turned toward the youngest. It took them literally seconds to have his sock and underwear off.
