“Of course.
Who would want a possessed boar for a child.”
“A boar?!”
“Oh my!”
Hinata touched her lips. “Sorry, it has the ability to speak the truth when I
don't want it to!”
“You rude
wench!”
“You're the rude one. Insulting the Hyuuga.”
“I-I-I d-d-did no-”
“You dare compare the Hyuuga eyes
with that animal nose?” Hinata rose and looked down at the woman gritting her
teeth. “Ugh! Let's go Hanabi before I say something rude.”
“I think you already have.”
Hanabi rose and left with her sister.
*_*^_^>_<
“You're either getting desperate
or just trying my patience.” Hyuuga Hinata stared across the long black
lacquered table at her father. She had just arrived home that morning and he
had avoided seeing her until after dinner.
“Hinata.”
He said as if saying her name would explain his every thought. “You are the one
trying patience here.” His face was stern as ever as he looked at her across
the table. “Since you are next in line as head of the household again you have
been cold, harsh with your sister, the staff and above all else you have rejected
every potential suitor.”
“So now I'm cold and harsh?” She
looked at him. Hiashi made a face, he knew what was
coming next. “So in other words no matter what, to you, I'm
still trash on the street?”
“I didn't say that, Hinata.”
“But you think it. Before I was weak in all senses of the word and of no use to the
Hyuuga family. Now...” Hinata shook her head looking at him. “Now that
I've grown stronger I'm “harsh” and “cold. Now that I am what you were.”
“You call this cruelty strength?
You still don't know the meaning of the word.!” Hyuuga
Hiashi gritted his teeth.
“Neither do you!” Hinata leaned
back smirking smugly. “What kind of man can't even stand up to his sickly
wife?”
“Hinata, do not speak of what you
know nothing of.”
“Oh I know enough.” The smirk gone and her hard gaze looking into his eyes. “I
know more than enough.” They stared at one another a little longer before
Hiashi looked away first. Hinata then turned her gaze away with a soft 'tch'. “Hanabi has no pull on my heart strings. No one in
this forsaken village does.” She rose and Hiashi looked at her once more. “I
would respect you much more if you would come to me yourself and discuss family
business.” With that she dismissed herself. Nosy maids at the door scattered
when they heard her footsteps. She looked at them all and went on her way down
the hall towards the front door.
“Are you going somewhere,
Hinata-Sama?” The oldest maid of the household caught her as she was slipping
her feet into her zori sandals.
“I need to get out of this place,
Saiyuri.” Hinata spoke softly, and her hands shook. Saiyuri looked at her
gently and ushered other servants of the household along quickly. Hinata was
crumbling again and faster than normal.
“Would you like company? It is
quite stuffy in here today.” Saiyuri said nonchalantly. Hinata froze. “You know
my hip is acting up again, if something were to happen I think this time it
would be the end of me.” Saiyuri rubbed
her hip for emphasis. Hinata looked up at the old woman, her nose and cheeks
were red and her eyes welled up with tears, but a soft smile was on her lips.
“You're stronger than the most
stubborn of weeds, Saiyuri.” Hinata murmured. “But I guess even weeds have an
expiration date and this household can't run without you.” Hinata held out her
hand to help the old woman take the short step down from the platform to the
house and out onto the streets of Konohagakure.
“That's the rudest thing I've
heard said directly to me.” Saiyuri scowled but sighed serenely when a warm
breeze blew through Konoha.
“I've heard worst.” Hinata
lowered her head.
“Hanabi told me what you said to
her. She was all distraught.”
“I've said many things to Hanabi.
Her least favorite is when I criticize father.”
“Your father...” Saiyuri looked
at the young mistress whose welled tears finally spilled over. “... Is
imperfect as you are.”
“Can you make it to the Hokage
monument, Saiyuri?” Hinata whispered her lips trembling.
“I think my hip is well enough to
make it.”
“Of course it is.” Hinata murmured.
Then her stomach growled.
“I assume we will be eating as
well?” Saiyuri chuckled and Hinata flushed.
*~*~*~
“Ahhh! I'm full!” Naruto set down his nth bowl of
ramen. The owner more than a little glad to see him after all the time he'd
been away. “I'm glad the recipe hasn't changed at all.”
“Now business can be booming once
more like it used to be.” Ayame said to her father. Naruto looked up.
“Things are finally looking up!”
The two hugged one another.
“Ossan...”
Naruto looked at the pair his face so serious then the two began to laugh.
“No, really business has been
fine! We just missed seeing you several times a week that’s all.” The owner,
Teuchi, smiled and put his arm around Ayame. “But I will miss Ayame-Chan more.”
“Father!”
She girl looked at him blushing.
“Are you going somewhere?” Naruto
looked at the young woman who just flushed more happily.
“I'm not! Dad's just
overreacting!”
“My daughter is getting married!
She's leaving me all alone to fend for myself.”
“Hmm...” Naruto pondered this
then smiled. “Congratulations! Who's the lucky guy?”
“Not telling yet. We haven't even
made a formal announcement.” Ayame sighed happily.
“Hmm?
But the food won't taste different if you leave, will it?”
“Oh! You! Only
worried about your stomach!” She huffed.
“Excuse me.” An older woman
lifted the material hanging in front of the ramen shop, both Teuchi and Ayame
quieted and the air got serious. Alerted by the sudden change in behavior
Naruto turned to look at the newcomer.
“Saiyuri-San.”
Teuchi nodded to the woman who merely smiled. She was short and slightly plump.
Her skin was pale and she had long black shiny hair with a single streak of
gray. The old woman looked at him took in his appearance with
large pale eyes, then looked back to the owner disregarding him as if he were
no one. “What can I get you today?”
“Two of the
usual.” She smiled and sat down. She wore tailored trousers of deep
blue, a loose fitted shirt and on top of that a happi
coat with a familiar familial crest on her back. Teuchi nodded to his daughter
and went to prepare the meals.
“You are...?” Saiyuri was now
looking at Naruto.
“Ah.. oh... Uzumaki Naruto.”
“I thought I recognized you.” She
smiled at him then noticed the bowls. “You eat quite healthily I see.”
“Ehehe,
I guess.” The conversation was growing more awkward by the minute. Teuchi now
aware of the stacks of bowls hurried to clear them and wipe down the counter
while he waited for the meat to cook a little more.
“That's always best I think; A
young man who eats healthily, especially for a Shinobi such as yourself.” She
was eying his forehead protector.
“Yeah!”
Naruto smiled.
“Now I remember you.” Saiyuri
smiled. “You were that loud-mouthy scamp that defeated Neji-Sama when he first
tried for the Chuunin exams.”
“Neji....Sama?”
“Order is ready, Saiyuri-San.”
Ayame-Chan set the bowls in a take-out container for her. Saiyuri rose.
“Saiyuri.”
A soft voice called and the flap opened again. “I will carry them this time.”
It
was then it became clear to Naruto why the tense atmosphere. Standing just
outside of the shop was, Hyuuga Hinata. She had been waiting for Saiyuri, but
decided to enter when the order was finished. She was now frozen as she looked
at Naruto. Her trademark gasp the one that Naruto recognized anywhere escaped
her lips.
Saiyuri,
Teuchi and Ayame all froze watching the two interact face to face, or rather
just kind of stare at one another. The air had gotten quite heavy as they eyed
each other. Hinata was pretty in her pink furisode,
her lengthy hair hung straight down and her face slightly flushed as it always
was in the presence of Naruto. Naruto on the other hand was a little more
nervous. He had wondered if Hinata had seen him at the monument that day. He
wondered if she would cry since that awkward confession. He wondered if he
would be on the receiving end of the temper she had found in his absence.
Neither
realizing their thoughts were displayed on their faces
as clear as day, well to anyone but each other. The three watchers glanced at
one another, to confirm if the thoughts they had about the two were shared.
Something was awkward and it had caught the both of them off guard.... but the
silence now was growing unbearably uncomfortable. Someone,
say something.
“Y-Yo....
Hinata.” He lifted a nervous hand to wave. Hinata
stood straighter and regained control of her features and the hand dropped.
“An honorific,
Naruto!” Ayame whispered to the blonde fox. Many others had received
quite the tongue lashing for forgetting it, even her once friends.
“Naruto.”
Hinata nodded then stepped forward and grabbed the take out box. “We will
return it when we head back.” She looked at the owner and his daughter.
“T-Take your
time!” Teuchi smiled nervously.
“What's up Hinata?” Naruto asked
taking that brush off as a bad sign. Ayame whispered to him again about the
honorific. “Uh, Hinata-Chan.” Ayame groaned.
“Too familiar
Naruto.” She mumbled.
“As well as can
be. Now if you'll excuse me.” She turned and exited the shop. “Come
along Saiyuri.”
“Don't take it personal, boy.”
Saiyuri hopped off the stool. She looked at him again and smiled thoughtfully
then left. Naruto blew out.
“Naruto...?” Ayame came around
the counter to look at him. He had frozen and was looking at a spot on the
floor. Then suddenly he jumped to being animated once more. He reached into his
pocket and pulled out his little frog and slammed money on the counter.
“Thanks for dinner!” And he was
gone. Teuchi picked up the money and shook his head with an incredulous
chuckle.
“That kid.”
“Is that not enough?” Ayame
furrowed her brows. “That Naruto!” Her cheeks puffed.
“I had hoped he would grow out of this as time passed. Honestly he is too old
for-”
“Quite the
contrary.” He chuckled again fanning out the bills to his daughter and
she gasped.
“He gave too much!” She poked her
head out to find a flash of orange from Naruto's jacket. “Already gone...”
“Didn't he seem distracted there
for a moment?” Teuchi continued to chuckle and set aside the change in the
event that Naruto would ever realize his error. “That boy is here so much he's
usually trying to spend his days to pay less.
Now this is interesting.”
“It is.” She smiled softly.
<3 <3 <3 <3 <3
“That boy was awfully familiar.”
Saiyuri commented as she and her young companion reached the trail that would
lead to the monument.
“Was he?” Hinata slid her eyes to
the woman but kept walking, taking care not to spill their supper. “I didn't
notice. Perhaps next time I will put him in his place.”
“Who was he?” The old woman
smiled
“A leftover
from my Shinobi days.” She raised noodles to her lips and slurped
careful to keep her dress spotless.
“Do you miss it?”
“No.” A tree rustled and Hinata
made a face seeing Naruto land.
“Hey!” He looked at her. “We need
to talk.”
“Nothing to
talk about.” Saiyuri looked between the young people again before
smiling a small smile.
“I think we do.” He jumped down
scarcely capable of hiding a look full of
“Oh. That.” Hinata looked at her
feet. “I think the time for that conversation has expired.”
“Hinata-Chan-”
“Sama.”
Saiyuri interjected
“What?” Hinata looked away from
Naruto and Naruto gave Saiyuri a questioning look.
“Hinata-Sama.”
Saiyuri supplied.
“Hinata-Cha-”
“Saiyuri has already corrected
you on your social blunder.” Hinata couldn't muster her usual arrogant air. “Do
be sure to correct when corrected. After all a Hokage should
know better. Are you still chasing after that dream? I mean you have a
habit of running off when things get difficult so I can't be sure anymore.”
“Hinata-sama.” Saiyuri looked at the young mistress and
Hinata bowed her head her hair curtaining her face. Saiyuri looked at Naruto
and rose from her seated position and approached him. “Please excuse the young
mistress, but she is going through stressful times in days of late and
shouldn't be distressed further.” Both Naruto and Saiyuri looked at the girl
who had her hands folded in her lap, playing with her fingers.
“Oh.” Naruto looked at her. That
was the old habit of the old Hinata. “Goodnight then.” He murmured.
“Uzumaki Naruto, right?” Saiyuri's voice dipped into a lower volume. Naruto's gaze
went back to Hinata. She was now standing and walking back to the spot where
Naruto had seen her before, on the head of one of the Hokage of the past. Once
in position the winds made her hair and dress flutter.
“Uh, right.”
He nodded with a soft polite smile, attention momentarily on Saiyuri before it
slid back to Hinata.
“I will remember it.”
“Um.
Okay?” He looked back at Saiyuri who was now turning her back to him. He took
that as the polite way of saying get lost; so he left
after another glance.
“Hinata-Sama, meanness doesn't
become you.” Hinata just let the wind blow through her.
