Okay, I’m going to make this very clear. This chapter is about Neji and Hinata. I am pairing them. If you’ve seen my profile on here, you know how I feel about them. If you don’t like it, please skip this chapter and move on. Thank you.

I’m strong on the surface, not all the way through
I’ve never been perfect, but neither have you.
-Linkin Park (Leave Out All the Rest)
Neji was convinced he was either dreaming or had gone insane and was living in some sort of made-up reality. Because it was simply not possible that the real world had turned this bizarre.
Hinata walked beside him as they climbed the small hill to the entrance of the Hyuuga compound. Her steps seemed sure, her mind made up. So why was he trying to figure out how to convince her not to do this?
He’d spent the last two years watching her blossom from the girl he thought he hated into a very beautiful woman who’d managed to confuse him at every turn. He knew he’d never really hated her. It had simply been what she stood for - the clan and their traditions.
Somewhere in those two years, he’d stopped wanting to be away from her, away from his duty, just away. He’d gone from hating her, or so he’d thought, to looking forward to the times he could be around her.
If he let himself think about it, he’d realize, too, that she’d stayed around the compound more. He always had tea waiting for him after training. And he somehow knew it’d been her. They had dinner together most nights, talking about their days, their training, laughing over their teammates. When did it happen?
He shook his head, turning his thoughts back to the problem at hand. The problem was, he didn’t want to talk her out of it. He wanted this. But what if she thought it was a mistake? He didn’t want to think about what would change. And things would, there was no confusion there.
They paused at the gates. Hinata turned and looked up at him. Now or never, Neji. “Hinata-sama” he began, not sure how to say it.
“Don’t you think it’s time we dropped the honorifics? Especially now…” Despite her bravado, there was color on her cheeks.
He considered her a moment. He really did want this. He wanted her. But was this a mistake? He had to know. “Hinata-s—” he stopped himself, “are you sure about this? About…” He glanced away briefly, then back, meeting her eyes, “me?” He finished in a whisper.
She heard it. Her Neji, unsure? Surely not. Neji was strong, confident. The night was surreal enough without this. She tilted her head and stared at him a moment. “There’s no one I would trust more with this. With me.” She was quiet while he absorbed that.
Unbidden, a picture of a loud-mouthed, outspoken blonde ninja flashed into her mind. Somewhere along the way, she figured out that it would never have worked out with him. He was a childhood crush. She’d never stop admiring him, but love…? No, not quite love. And he was too lost on Sakura, too unsuitable, in the end, for The Hyuuga. Her father was much more accepting these days, but she had a feeling Naruto would never be quite good enough.
Her eyes traced Neji’s face instead. His quiet stoicism, the strength he showed in his stance, his self-confidence - these would be traits that Hiashi would approve of. It helped that she loved him, though she’d never quite mustered the courage to say so. She nodded. “Yes, I am very sure.”
Another brief moment and he took her hand and led her through the gates of the compound. Neji’s room was next to hers, which he’d moved into a short time after the Chunnin Exams, and it was here that he led her. He slid the shoji door open silently and stepped aside for her to go first.
Now she was nervous. She had no idea if Neji had any experience. She’d never seen him date, but then again, she didn’t monitor him every hour of every day. But she, very decidedly, did not have any. She had no idea what to do. “Neji-” she began, then took a deep breath. “I… don’t know what to do. I’ve never done…”
He hushed her, placing his fingers over her mouth. “I know.” He smiled wryly. “That’s why we’re here, remember? I haven’t, either, but I think we can figure it out.” He smiled again, then wrapped his arms around her. “Hinata…” he whispered and the breath teased along her neck, making her shiver. Neji’s lips brushed her ear, her neck, and her eyes closed. His hands slid up her arms sending shivers up them. “Look at me.” She opened her eyes and stared into the light purple pools of his. “I have wished for this for a very long time. You should know something.” He paused to brush his lips along hers and their kiss exploded. Tongues clashed, lips devoured and it took a supreme effort on Neji’s part to pull back.
They both panted, trying to catch their breath. “Hinata,” Neji started again, “This will change us. You know that, right?” That wasn’t what he needed to say. Wasn’t what he’d started to say. But despite her response to him, he there was still a niggling doubt.
“We’ll change? I know it’s an important step for me to do this, but how will it change me?” Hinata’s brows squashed together and she looked so damned cute, he had to fight the urge to kiss them smooth again.
“Us” He corrected, then waited a beat for it to sink in. He saw the second when she made the connection. Her face cleared.
“Oh.” She breathed. She huffed a little and went over to sit on his bed. She looked up at him, where he’d stayed. If she changed her mind, it would kill him, but he’d honor her wishes. He’d just need a week of cold showers. “Oh.” She said again.
He watched her stare at the floor and wished fervently he could read minds in that moment. She nodded, as if coming to a decision. “Neji…” she took a deep breath, “do you think it would be for the better?”
That’s not quite what he expected, so he moved over to the bed and sat next to her. He took her hand in his and tilted her face up to him. “That depends on how you… feel about me. I—” he started and choked on his words.
She traced his face, once again, with her eyes. Now was the time to tell him. She cleared her throat nervously. “Neji… I love you.”
He stared back at her, not sure if he heard her correctly. “I don’t mean like a brother.”
She raised an eyebrow. “I haven’t thought of you like that in what seems like forever.” She shook her head. “No, I love you.” She stressed the word paused, unsure of how to put it so he’d understand. She watched Neji take in the news and held her breath. What if he didn’t feel the same? Was his duty still between them?
Neji. Stoic Neji, cracked a real smile. Hinata blinked a few times, trying to decipher it. “Hinata, I love you. I’m… in love with you.” He looked away briefly.
Her smile spread slowly, from one side of her face to the other, then she practically tackled him, laughing. “Then yes, definitely for the better.” Then her lips met his again and this time, there was no hesitation. Their tongues battled once more and their hands touched everywhere they could reach. He didn’t miss an inch of exposed skin, touching and kissing. She spent time, too, exploring his body, enjoying the process of removing his clothes, revealing him to her fully for the first time.
He paused when her dress came off. She was wearing something lacy and complicated, and he had to remind himself how to breathe. The things it did for her breasts. He stared another few seconds, trying to figure it out. “I’ll show you another time,” she said and reached behind herself for the hook.
Seconds later, the bra landed somewhere in the vicinity of the bathroom door and Neji wasted no time worshipping her breasts. He kissed all her curves and more than once, she made a little sound of frustration in the back of her throat. But he would not rush this, if it killed him. And it just might.
He kissed his way down her body, over her stomach to her legs. On the way back up he paused briefly and considered the lace nothings she wore to match the bra. She was already moving, her head thrown back, and he thought she’d never looked more beautiful in that moment. He slipped his fingers under the lace and watched her reaction as he began to pleasure her.
Her eyes flew open and watched him through the haze of arousal. “Neji!” He smiled slightly.
“Shhh, Hina, love, we don’t want to alert the whole house.” He gave a quiet chuckle as her eyes widened and she stuffed her fist in her mouth. He parted her lips and his finger found the small nub he was looking for.
Her eyes closed and she writhed on the bed. He watched her face and knew when she got close to the edge. He managed to slip her panties off and placed his mouth where his fingers had very recently been working. He wanted to taste her, know every inch of her.
Her eyes flew open again and she watched as he used his lips and tongue on her. A moment later, she screamed into her fist as she fell apart. He wasted no time and moved up to lie between her legs. But Hinata had other ideas. She hooked her leg around him and, using the surprise to her advantage, rolled them over. “My turn,” she whispered. Then she, too, explored every bit of him. Touching, kissing, and when she found herself facing the one part she’d never seen on him, she paused.
She touched it, so lightly, marveling at the velvety softness of the skin. She didn’t notice Neji grabbing the sheets in clenched fists. She leaned down and kissed it, barely a hint of one and smiled to herself when he grunted quietly. Slowly, still not sure how to do it, she took it into her mouth.
Neji gasped and started reciting the Ninja rules in his head. He would not go off in her mouth. He would not. But, dear Kami it felt so good. He was struggling, the feel of her lips and tongue on him too much, until he couldn’t stand it anymore.
He sat up and pulled her to him and to his surprise, she straddled his lap and started kissing him. They could taste each other on their lips and it made it that much more erotic. He pulled back, so he could look at her. “Hinata…” he whispered. When she opened her eyes and smiled up at him, he said, once more, “are you—” but he had no chance to finish what he was going to say
She put her hand over his mouth and whispered, “Yes, now please!” He would have chuckled at the politeness, given the situation, but wisely kept his mouth closed. She moved just enough and lowered herself onto him. Slowly, it was pure torture. She was so tight, he thought he was going to explode. She lowered herself just a little more, but it was obviously painful.
He considered her a moment, then laid her back. He leaned down to kiss her and while she was distracted pushed himself all the way home. He had to stop, had to try to breathe. It was all he could do to hold on to his control. After a few deep breaths, he looked at her again.
The expression he saw told him everything he needed to know. This. This closeness, this connection. After everything they’d been through together, after all they’d been to each other… This was where they were headed, though neither of them would have admitted it before now.
They savored the connection, light kisses, soft brushes, the hint of a breath. “I love you,” Hinata whispered.
“And I love you, Hinata.” He began moving and he thought of everything he possibly could to help him hold on to his control. Thankfully, it didn’t take her long to get back there, it started building almost immediately and before long, she had her hand stuffed in her mouth again. But somehow she couldn’t hold it in.
“Neji!” she shouted and it was his undoing. His shout of triumph at finally making this beautiful creature his was only barely muffled by the pillow he’d buried his face in as he followed her over the edge.

Neither of them heard the soft footsteps as they approached Neji’s door. Neither of them realized they’d paused there a moment. And so caught up were they in each other, that neither heard the soft chuckle or the quiet “finally” that Hiashi muttered before he continued on his way.
