Chapter 2
As the boy drifted back into unconsciousness Kakashi, for the first time in his life, found he was unsure of what to do.
Should he take the boy to a hospital? Call a local doctor and have him looked at? He forced himself to calm down and think analytically like he'd been doing for years in the business world. Kakashi collapsed into a nearby chair, changing the position of the body now in his care, his usual analytical abilities failing him.
And that was the way Iruka found him the next morning as he walked down the flight of stairs he had wearily walked up just the previous night. The only difference in position was Kakashi was collapsed in a nearby chair, still holding the boy in his arms as opposed to standing.
What on earth?! Iruka himself dazed as he realized that his summoning had worked and the result of that was currently lying in Kakashi's arms, somehow having been brought out of the cloud from last night.
The full enormity of the forces that he'd possible disturbed suddenly hit the brown-haired man all at once. That and the fact that he had summoned a human being into the real world without caring how it might possibly affect him, filled him with such regret and guilt that he felt obliged to make amends right away. He would begin his reparations by waking up that idiot Kakashi.
"What are you doing Hatake!!!" Iruka's voice suddenly burst out of the room that had been so silent only minutes before.
Both Kakashi and the child awoke with a start, the boy fell out of the older male's arms and landed on the ground with a graceless plop!
The golden-haired child made no cry of pain at his abrupt descent onto the floor, in fact he said nothing. He did, however stare at Kakashi with something akin to horror, his creamy complexion quickly paling.
As Kakashi awoke he looked in his arms and found them to be vacant. That panic that had filled him briefly last night did so again and he looked around desperately trying to locate that small figure to ensure the whole thing hadn't been a dream.
When his gaze finally landed on the figure of the boy two things hit him. One he was being stared at in fear, and two the kid was still very much naked, hmmm you think I’d of taken more notice of that fact last night.
Quickly tearing his gaze from the naked form before him, Kakashi tore off his jacket and handed it to the boy without glancing back at him.
Iruka saw the child slowly back away from Kakashi as if terrified of the man. Taking matters into his own hands, he grabbed a nearby blanket and walked over to the young man who couldn't have been any older than fifteen, at least in physical appearance.
At the sound of movement the boy's eyes went from carefully watching the grey-haired man to its direction. His eyes widened as a brown-haired man with a scar across his nose held out a blanket to him, a friendly smile on his face.
But friendly smiles could hold lies; he knew that better than anyone else. He realized his state of undress, though and knew he wouldn't get anything accomplished by traipsing about naked.
He very slowly crawled on all fours over to where the man holding the blanket stood. Never once did he take his eyes off of the man's hands and feet, knowing from experience that these body parts delivered the most pain.
Iruka's heart broke at the blatant look of mistrust that the boy gave him, his gaze like that of a wounded animal as inch by inch he made his way towards Iruka. What could have happened to the boy to make him so mistrustful? This quandary bothered Iruka more than anything had in for a long time.
Finally when the boy had gotten just short of Iruka's hand, he put out that fragile-looking hand and reached hesitantly for the blanket.
Maintaining the smile he'd had the entire time, Iruka ensured that as the boy reached for the blanket, he released it, so that the exchange went smoothly.
Once the boy had the blanket in hand he wrapped it around himself and scampered over to the nearest corner, visibly shaking.
The whole scene had not fallen blindly to Kakashi, who had witnessed it in its entirety when his jacket failed to leave his hands.
This won't do at all, Kakashi mused, I am the one the boy is supposed to trust. Yes, I am the one who has searched for him all these years.
Though it definitely wasn't lost on Kakashi that for some reason the boy mistrusted him on sight, he sighed, this really was quite the predicament.
Iruka stayed where he was, but with a concerned gaze at the boy attempted to converse with him, not even sure the boy spoke any modern languages.
"My name is Iruka." He cajoled softly, trying to keep eye contact with the child, which was proving difficult since he kept averting his eyes. "Do you have a name?"
For a long moment silence filled the room.
Finally a voice that Kakashi had heard briefly before hesitantly spoke out in somewhat husky voice, no doubt due to its misuse.
"I used to have a lot of names." It softly chimed, that lyrical voice filling the two with wonder, it was not often you heard such a beautiful sound. "But I haven't called myself anything for a long, long time."
"Well what name were you most known by?" Iruka smiled not realizing the stupidity of what he'd just asked. Anyone who knew the child of loneliness's story knew what name most called him.
"Monster." Was all that was quietly murmured.
At this obvious blunder Iruka felt his face flush in embarrassment. Next time think Umino, he berated himself.
"Well what name did your parents give you?" he corrected, yes this would be a better answer.
"What are parents?" With head tipped in bemusement, Iruka thought the child was joking until he saw the genuine confusion lit in those blue eyes.
He rubbed his head and turned his head, meeting eyes with Kakashi's.
For once both men were in agreement. Just what kind of life had this boy had?
