”My red headed angel, your darkness is to deep for my light to reach yet you continue to stand. How can I reach into such a soul if there is nothing there to touch?” Silence greeted him as an answer. There was never an answer. Fifteen questions and only silence was returned to him. The small girl before him was just that, broken. Her red wings were bent at odd angels as she tried to miserably flap to save her feeble form from the line of questioning. Bright green eyes called for help but no voice escaped the small creature who looked at him. Hajime* could do nothing. In all his adventures, all his hard ships, he could never understand the pain at which this little creature was facing. To be damned by those who ‘cared’ for her and to be condemned by those who created her. All our young hero could do, was out stretch his hand, his palm face up like a welcoming call and smile. “Come with me Ai.* Let me show you that this is world, is not all darkness and shadows.”
Gaara’s pov
Things like this didn’t normally get to him. But the way Inari wrote the words, he felt some inner connection, as if it were he in the story. However he knew this was a work of fiction and that Ai was not real. Add that to the fact that he was no angel and he got just another blast of loneliness. But still, he felt wanted. The book was lifted to his chest and he closed his eyes. The first bell had rung, he was a speed reader you see, and had easily finished the two hundred page book. Give that to the fact that he had arrived at the school a good hour early, and you get ample reading time.Students began to file in, but none of them really noticed him. Sure there was a hello here and there but if you really looked, they say through him. Perhaps that was what made the blond so special. Naruto looked at him, not at the background, not around him and most of all, not through him. He was insecure about what the blond had seen on his arms but what was done was done and there was not high that would change that little fact of life. He would simply have to be. But be what exactly? Just like Ai in the novel he’d read, he was lost. He didn’t have a hope of finding the light in this horrible creation of a world. Every time he did he was kicked back down to the bottom, only to look back up and idolize what could have been.
His thoughts were so deep that he did not notice a rather loud, obnoxious blond find his way in front of the redhead. Blue eyes focused on the red mess before approaching and loudly slapping his hand on the desk to gain the attention of the red head. “ohi Gaara, if you keep that face up, you’ll get stuck with it” he stated with his usual carefree laugh. Gaara looked up at Naruto with slight confusion. He didn’t think he was making a face but then again Naruto’s humor was always a little farfetched to say the least. His eyes cast down at the book and he held it a little tighter. Did Naruto want it back? It was a possibility as the blond had bought it so it was officially his. As if seeing this tension the blond chuckled. “didja finish it yet?” he questioned and the red head slowly nodded. What was it to Naruto? Sure they both seemed to like the same author but they didn’t really talk about it all that often. “and what didja think?”
This took the red head back a few paces. Naruto was asking his opinion on a book. First off Gaara was fairly sure that Naruto didn’t read all to much. Many intelligent conversations with Neji or the others often ended in an idiotic statement from this blond. But he supposed that was just Naruto’s personality. He could clear the tension in he room simply by arriving. Was it strange that at that moment Gaara did something rather uncharacteristic of him? A small smile took over his lips but just as soon as it arrived, it vanished without a trace. “It was interesting…. And deep, almost like trying to reach out to it’s audiences, unlike the first that was more inward based, trying to hit home. This second one was written at a different pace. If I didn’t know better I’d say Inari was trying to reach a specific person.”
Naruto’s pov
That look that had taken a place on the red heads face was absolutely adorable. Of course to anyone who didn’t know him the expression hadn’t changed but in this particular instance there was a slight upturn of the boy’s lips as he thought. A slight furrow of the nonexistent brow and Naruto couldn’t help but interrupt this train of thought with a “ohi Gaara” After which he went into a spell about how his face would stick that way. He didn’t expect the male to know what he was talking about but it was fun none the less. He tried not to stare to hard but a glance down told him all he needed to know about the book he’d let go to the other boy. It had done what it was intended to do. The explanation he received upon asking was quite interesting as well considering he hadn’t really expected Gaara to answer in such a way. If the young writer stopped to think about it he could understand. The first book was more or less about himself and the struggles he’d faces, more like a way for himself to get out into the world instead of waiting for someone to come and get him. But this other one was reaching out to Gaara. While others would feel that hand , it was only intended for Gaara.Naruto was rewarded with a small smile. Not many would have noticed this either because they didn’t look for it. Just as soon as he had glimpsed it, it was gone. “that’s good. I think so too.” A rather plain answer that didn’t give much away considering he was the one who wrote it. But he was jealous of his counter part Inari. Sure it was only a pen name but she got all the fame and all the credit while he got nothing. It was the smarter decision in the long run because he was sure no one would read anything if it was under his name. Inari was a mysterious name that led to many other questions as to why someone would name their child that. But what hit him the most was that Gaara would see Inari but not him and that hurt a little.
“A few of us are going to skip the next two classes. Want to come with?” OF course a few of us normally meant Shikamaru, Kiba and Choji because The girls were to stuck up and well Neji was just like them. It was a perfect way to loosen Gaara up and maybe then he could ask there’d head about those scars. They didn’t look to fresh, which was refreshing. But he also wanted to see if Gaara would let him touch him again. Just that brief touch, the warmth and the cold, he could get use to it. Sure he knew there would be a lot more to do if he ever wanted to get into a relationship with this male but he was willing to do the work, surprised? He didn’t quite understand it himself because well that was how he was. But he felt like he had a connection to this specific red head. It was almost like how he felt for Sasuke, that was a one sided battle that he soon gave up on because that male was just well untouchable was a good word for it.
thinking about Sasuke made his blood boil a little and he shook the feeling off. It was something eh would have to face sooner or later but he didn’t want to deal with it at the moment. Sasuke was a prick, anyone could see that, but Naruto had went through a phase where he was attracted to that sort of thing. In fact he was fairly sure that he needed that kind of anchor at that time in his life. But now he was setting sail on a new ship and hoping to catch a new wind, particularly Gaara’s.
The bell rang, which didn’t really signify anything as the teacher was always a couple of minutes late. “Think on it Kay?” He reached out his hand, a bit hesitant but that wasn’t stopping him. His fingers gently grazed the hand of the much paler boy and he gave one of his trademark smiles before turning and going off to his seat. A few minutes later the teacher entered and started class. But Naruto was in another world. He doodled on his paper. He couldn’t’ write in class because if he did them people would know who he was should they get a hold of that note book. Not to mention he might actually be expected to do something if they knew he had an exceptional talent for writing. But he liked being a slacker, so slacker he would remain.
Neji’s pov
Could it be considered pathetic that he was jealous of such little interaction. From his seat he could see hat little expression change and of course the touch that both Gaara and Naruto had shared. While the blond had smiled, the redhead had looked a little confused? The teen protégée could see what was happening between the two. Naruto’s personality was infectious. He could make anyone love him with enough attention. He’d learned his lesson in much a similar way. He use to mentally abuse his cousin Hinita all the time and he was cold to the rest of the family and well the world but with a few lectures and that warm goofy smile he was a little better. He hung out with the group now and he was defiantly a more sociable person because of the blond. But the feelings that were left behind were enough to kill any person. While Naruto had only meant to be nice to him and to drag him out of the self pity hole, he left behind these feelings that not even he could understand. Sure he liked Naturo, that was a given, but he wasn’t sure what kind of like it was because he didn’t generally feel like this towards people. Characters in a book, television actors sure but an actual person? Never . He rubbed the bridge of his nose and began class with a turn towards the window. He was a genius there was no need for him to pay attention r take notes. He was purely here for attendance. When tests and homework came up he did them without even cracking the book so he was set for life. But with this he could think better. He was closer to breaking Naruto’s secret. He had something that he was hiding from the world and while Neji couldn’t pinpoint it exactly, he knew it was there and he wanted to find it.
Gaara’s pov
what was he suppose to say to that? It wasn’t like he could open his mouth and just yell across the class room. That was the ideal speech but he didn’t want to break the mood. He liked what Naruto was, his out going personality, the fact that he had no problem through in his opinion no matter what the occasion. If anything he wanted to be like Naruto. He wished he had the ability to reach out to others instead of clam up inside his own little shell and hide from the world. But he didn’t know how to face the world or how to interact with others. With a crazy father and a murderous child molester for an uncle he was just doomed to be a bit messed up in the head. The class was out of his head for now, it went on simply because he never bothered to participate in the past so why do so now? He didn’t let go of the book. Even with his hand still tingling from where the blond boy had touched him, he didn’t release the book. It was his life line to real life. He wished he could just dive on in to the book and become Ai, become love and maybe then he could fine his own Hajime. Sure he’d have to be a girl but he could deal with that if it meant he would be loved. Sure he had his siblings but that just wasn’t the same thing. They couldn’t provide him with the kind of love he needed and perhaps that was what was killing him inside.
The rest of the world was forgotten and the red head closed his eyes. He felt as if he hadn’t slept in months, and chanced were he hadn’t. Dark circles made themselves known around his features so everyone knew he didn’t sleep all that to well. But with the book in his arms, he felt safe. Funny how something so simple could change everything. He slowly lowered his head till it made contact with the desk. His arms tightened around the book and within mere moments he was sleeping. A light sound of his breath as it escaped his mouth was the only sound he made, but then of course you’d have to have the ears of Naruto Uzumaki to hear that, which he did.
